Looking For Something Different: Overland travels in the 1970s. Europe, Israel, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia, Nepal & India.
This book is a travel memoir from the times 1971-76. It involves six trips, mainly overland, some hitch-hiking, covering Europe, Israel, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
Al these were done on a shoestring budget, so some of the travelling was by hitch-hiking, particularly through Europe. Some of the journeys were made alone and some with my first wife.
On my first night in France in February, I slept in a wood and woke covered in snow! In Greece I temporarily worked as a DJ.
In Pokhara, Nepal where we stayed for two weeks, we had a log boat to row to the shops, under the vista of Annapurna (a Himalayan mountain).
In the book I write of the changes in countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, and Israel from what we hear of life there today.
Not all these experiences were positive. I had two occasions in Europe where I needed to stand my ground and deal in the moment, with scary situations. .
The last of the travels included living in India for fifteen months, seven months of which was in a small cabin in a forest by the Ganges with my wife. We had to deal with a male macaque monkey coming indoors and raging at my wife when she screamed. .
In the book I describe landscapes, people, architecture, cultures, atmospheres, and how I/we felt in so many different situations.. I show some of the records I kept of distances travelled, and how much was spent. I also noted what was going on in the world during the time we were away. Finally after fifteen months of living in India (mainly in the cabin), I write about the shock of returning to and adjusting to life back in the U.K.
