This one gripped me from the prologue, as Robin’s book usually do! The tension continued to build as we go on this journey with Evelyn, recent widowed single mom of 2, new city, and stressed! She slowly finds herself in a car & misuse game with an unknown person, as small peculiar things being to occur & eventually escalate. Her world slowly unravels & she realizes her past her come back to haunt her!
The writing style was great as always, and the story definitely kept me engaged. Domestic thriller fans will certainly enjoy this one, & I would definitely recommend. Third read by this author & I will definitely be reading more! Thank you Joffe Books and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy.
NOT HER DAUGHTER BY ROBIN MAHLE. Release day set for the 18th of November 2025. The prologue alone was sinister. Shocking. I really enjoyed this story and it kept me turning them pages. I just had to find out what happened. This is my 2nd book by Robin and looking forward to reading another one ☺
This is the second book after ‘He’s Lying About Everything’ 3 months after Evelyn’s husband Derek was murdered… 👩🏼🏫 Evelyn took the baby, Nicole, on as her own with her son, Ben, and moved to Asheboro for a fresh start again…. 🏠 Evelyn just recently took on a job at a law firm and her kids go to daycare while she’s at work. 🧑🧒🧒 She met a guy, Tyler, while she popped in a cafe near her work and they hit it off! ☕️ Tyler knows that Evelyn is desperate to find a nanny to hire after the day care kicked the kids out and recommended her Marissa. 👩🏼🍼 Once Marissa is hired as a nanny for both Ben and Nicole. Things started to go wrong - Evelyn’s being stalked, things go missing, a babysitter found dead outside her house at 2am, lost her job at law firm ,then her baby, Nicole, was kidnapped… 🤯
Why was baby Nicole taken?! Could it have something to do with Tyler and Marissa?! 🤔
If you really want to know, then you need to read this book to find out! 🤪
Wow, I’m speechless and I didn’t know where this story was going!! 😮 This has kept me on edge of my seat and I couldn’t put the book down until I know why and what happened! 📖👀 Robin smashed it again!!! 😍
I would like to say thank you to the lovely Zoe (@zooloosbooktours) and Robin (@authorrobinmahle) for letting participate on this tour. ♥️
Bestselling author Robin Mahle, a favorite, returns with her highly anticipated sequel, NOT HER DAUGHTER, the second installment in the captivating Secrets and Suspense series.
Following the gripping narrative of He's Lying About Everything #1, this enthralling psychological thriller draws readers back into a tumultuous journey where a woman's harrowing past collides with her present in a whirlwind of suspense and murder.
In this twisty and intense tale, we rejoin Evelyn as she grapples with the fallout from her desperate choices. The story unfolds with riveting suspense, taking readers on an action-packed ride through the complexities of domestic life, where secrets lurk behind every corner and the stakes have never been higher.
Prepare for an unpredictable cat-and-mouse game that will keep you on edge until the very last page.
About...
Evelyn Moore, a former respected lawyer, wife, and mother, whose life fell apart after her husband's affair led to scandal and her husband's death. To escape her past, Evelyn flees with her young son, Ben (age five), and a baby, Nicky, from her husband (Derek) and mistress (Riley) after she murdered her in self-defense. She assumes a new identity as a single mom and settles in the small Pennsylvania town of Asheboro at a new small law firm. No one knows about their horrific past. (or so she thinks).
POV: The narrative unfolds through the eyes of Evelyn, Marissa, a woman intricately linked to the baby’s family, and Chelsea, a babysitter who works at the daycare.
From past to present, as the story unfolds, readers are drawn into the harrowing events leading up to Riley's death and the subsequent aftermath.
Evelyn’s quest for a fresh start soon spirals into chaos when she discovers a chilling note on her kitchen table: “Did you really think you could keep her?” This unsettling revelation shatters her fragile new existence, compelling her to confront the buried secrets of her past. How can she safeguard her children while grappling with her past and the forces against her?
As the tension escalates, Evie is ensnared in a psychological cat-and-mouse game, where paranoia and anxiety grip her every thought. Her work life and professional world are being destroyed by someone out for revenge. Someone is intent on unraveling her life, and the threat looms large, often hidden in plain sight. The narrative artfully explores her growing fear and suspicion, leaving readers questioning the intentions of those around her.
There are other supporting characters we meet: Chelsea, Tyler, Marissa, Colleen, and Chuck (the hero), whose roles are intertwined.
Evie's primary motivation becomes protecting Ben and Nicky, leading her to consider drastic measures to evade the threats and ensure their survival.
My thoughts..
“Harrowing & heartfelt, a compelling mix of high wire tension, intense twists, and superb writing. At its heart, a remarkable portrayal of motherhood, in all its beautiful glory, despair, and fearless love. An enthralling follow-up sequel to He’s Lying About Everything.”
Mahle astutely examines the lengths a mother will go to protect her children, illuminating the moral complexities that accompany such decisions.
The narrative artfully portrays Evelyn’s struggle to outrun her past, only to confront it with staggering consequences. True to Mahle's signature style, this book is a suspenseful page-turner filled with twists that will keep you enthralled until dawn.
For those seeking a richer experience, I wholeheartedly recommend reading He's Lying About Everything before diving into Not Her Daughter.
This engrossing, multi-layered psychological thriller promises to keep you on the edge of your seat right up to the epilogue, with jaw-dropping twists that will leave you guessing until the very end.
The author brilliantly navigates themes of motherhood, moral dilemmas, and the lengths one will go to safeguard their family. I highly recommend the author and her backlist.

You know that feeling when you finish a book and immediately need to know what happens next? That's exactly where Robin Mahle left us dangling at the end of He's Lying About Everything. Well, grab your cuppa and settle in, because this sequel doesn't disappoint.
Poor Evelyn. As if discovering your husband's affair wasn't enough trauma for one lifetime, she's now raising his love child alongside her own son Ben. When we catch up with her, she's done what any sensible woman would do—packed up the lot and started fresh somewhere new. But Ben's not making it easy, constantly reminding everyone that Nicky isn't really his sister. Kids, eh? They've got a special talent for making difficult situations even harder.
Just when things seem to be looking up—new job at a cosy law firm, a lovely new man in her life, and what appears to be the perfect nanny—Mahle pulls the rug out from under us. Because of course she does. This is a psychological thriller, not a Hallmark movie.
The twist? That wonderful nanny and Evelyn's new lover are working together, and they've got plans that don't include Evelyn keeping her children. The day Evelyn comes home to an empty house is absolutely chilling. But here's where it gets properly complicated: while Ben is legally hers, Nicky's situation is murkier than a Wellington winter's day. The kidnappers claim Nicky was stolen from them by the mistress in the first place. Talk about a moral dilemma.
Robin Mahle's brilliance lies in how she tangles this web. Evelyn can't simply ring the police—the legal grey area around Nicky would only make things worse. Instead, she's forced into a desperate game where the rules keep changing and the truth seems increasingly elusive. Who's lying? Who's telling the truth? And most importantly, how can she possibly get both children back safely?
This sequel builds beautifully on the first book's foundation, ratcheting up the tension while exploring what it truly means to be a mother. It's not just about biology or legality—it's about love, sacrifice, and the lengths we'll go to protect our children, regardless of how they came into our lives.
Robin Mahle has crafted another page-turner that'll have you reading well past bedtime, constantly questioning everyone's motives. Perfect for fans of domestic suspense who appreciate their thrillers with genuine emotional depth. Just don't expect to get much sleep once you start.
First, I want to thank Robin Mahle, Joffe Books and Zooloo Book Tours for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.
WOW!!! I thought He’s Lying About Everything by Robin Mahle was good but DANG, her sequel Not Her Daughter was insanely addictive that pulled on my heart strings!! Straight away Robin hooked me with the first line about Ben and I melted!! I was up till the wee hours of the morning glued to my Kindle to see how this story unfolded!! Yes, it was that addicting and that fast paced that you could not put it down.
If you have not read He’s Lying About Everything by Robin Mahle I highly suggest that you do or you may be a little bit lost. She does recap a little in this book. However, to get a full blown picture of what Ben went through and all the characters' back stories you may want to read that one first. I am glad that I read that one prior. But I swear in that book the daughter’s name was Jenny and this book is Nicky so I was confused.
My heart totally went out to young Ben! I wanted to reach out into the book and give him a huge comforting hug! No little guy should have ever had to witness what he did in the previous book and now is suffering from PTSD and having nightmares!! This poor little kid has been through a lot!!
I loved the friendship that Evelyn and Tyler were forming. After everything Derek did to her in the past she deserved someone nice.
Be careful who you trust to watch your child. They might be watching them for an ulterior motive to find dirt on you…your former life. Lots of deep secrets in this book are waiting to be unleashed again.
Not Her Daughter deserves more than 5 stars. This book and He’s Lying About Everything would be great as a series on NetFlix!
I really enjoyed this book. In it, we find single mom Evelyn in a new house, with a new job, her kids in school and daycare, and her trying to juggle it all. Evelyn lands a job at a lawyers office in town, and from there, things seem to go downhill for her. Someone is messing with her paperwork, she can't seem to get to daycare on time, and she thinks she's being followed. Evelyn soon loses her daycare spot after being late one too many times but is in luck as the handsome accountant across the street has a recommendation for her. In comes Marissa. Things seem to be getting better until she is fired from her job. She collects her son from school and goes home to find Marissa, her daughter, and all her daughters items gone. She goes to Marissa's house and discovers Marissa doesn't seem to live there. So where did Marissa and her daughter go? I'm leaving a lot out on purpose. I don't want to give too much away. This book was twisty and turny and kept my attention well. In the end, I found myself rooting for both Evelyn and Marissa. The only part of this book that I didn't like was the ending that came too soon, a few unanswered questions, and the epilogue, which I really could have done without. I would definitely recommend this book to others
Thank you, Netgalley, Robin Mahle, and Joffee Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Eerie Book Review: Not Her Daughter by Robin Mahle 👶🩸 Some secrets rot quietly in the dark—until someone decides to dig them up. Not Her Daughter by Robin Mahle is a slow-burn nightmare wrapped in domestic perfection, where guilt whispers louder than the wind outside your window. Evelyn Moore has built herself a new life in Asheboro—a quiet town, a tidy home, two children, and a story that doesn’t quite add up. Beneath the surface of motherhood and new beginnings lies something twisted, something buried. When that folded note appears—Did you really think you could keep her?—you can almost hear the world tilt off its axis. Mahle’s writing drips with dread, each chapter thick with unease. The walls seem to breathe, the silence lingers too long, and every shadow feels like it knows the truth. It’s not just a thriller—it’s a confession disguised as a bedtime story gone horribly wrong. By the time the final twist lands, you’ll question everything—who’s innocent, who’s lying, and how far a mother’s love can stretch before it snaps. Final Verdict: 🕯️ Darkly emotional 🔪 Tense and haunting 👶 A mother’s love meets moral decay Rating: 5 out of 5 bloodstained lullabies Hashtags: #NotHerDaughter #RobinMahle #EerieReads #PsychologicalThriller #DarkDomesticFiction #TwistedMothers #SuspenseBooks #CreepyReads #BookstagramThriller #EdgeOfYourSeatReads
Robin Mahle’s Not Her Daughter is a taut, emotionally charged thriller that lingers long after the final page—equal parts psychological suspense and maternal reckoning.
Evelyn Moore was once a respected lawyer, a devoted wife, and mother to one. Now she’s a single mother of two—or so she tells everyone. After a violent confrontation with her husband’s mistress, Evelyn finds herself not only burying a body but cradling a baby that isn’t hers. The move to small-town Asheboro is meant to be a fresh start, but when a chilling note appears—“Did you really think you could keep her?”—the past begins to claw its way back.
Mahle’s prose is brisk and quietly haunting, with a narrative voice that balances vulnerability and steel. Evelyn is a compelling protagonist: flawed, fiercely protective, and navigating a moral maze with no easy exits. The tension builds steadily, with twists that feel both shocking and earned, culminating in a finale that’s as devastating as it is satisfying.
Perfect for fans of Freida McFadden and Alice Feeney, this is a story about secrets, survival, and the blurry line between justice and desperation. A gripping sequel that stands confidently on its own, Not Her Daughter is best read with the lights low and your heart wide open.
With thanks to Robin Mahle, the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
This was my first Robin Mahle book, and won’t be my last. I started it yesterday and finished it this morning—I just couldn’t put it down. The suspense had me hooked because I needed to know what really happened.
I felt the emotions of the characters (and I like this when reading a book - if you can make me feel - you did it right), and I had so many questions right from the beginning. The title is Not Her Daughter, but at first it almost felt like she was. You find out pretty quickly she isn’t, but that just left me needing to know more—how did she get the baby, what happened to her husband, how did the mother die? The book drops hints here and there, but you have to wait for the answers, which kept me turning the pages.
Just when I thought I had it figured out—I didn’t. That suspense kept me on my toes the whole time. This was a great, easy, read, and I can’t wait to read my next Robin M. book.
Thank you to @NetGalley for this ARC and @Joffe Books
Not Her Daughter by Robin Mahle hooked me from the first line. I picked it up expecting a standard psychological thriller, but honestly, it surprised me in the best way. The premise alone - another woman stole my husband, so I took her baby - is wild enough, but the story goes deeper than I thought it would. I really liked how the author built Evelyn’s character. You’re constantly questioning whether you should sympathise with her or be terrified of her, and that’s exactly the kind of moral messiness I love in this genre. The tension in the small-town setting, the constant feeling that someone is watching, and that creeping dread as Evelyn’s secrets start to crack… it all worked so well. And that last twist? I saw parts of it coming, but the way it unraveled still caught me off guard. Definitely one of those “just one more chapter” books that turned into five more chapters. Overall, a solid, twisty, addictive read. I really enjoyed it.
I've actually read a fair few books by this author now so when I started reading this book and it felt familiar, I thought it was my love of the writing style etc - but as I kept reading, I thought, I recognise this!?
Well, I wasn't going mad - this is actually indeed a follow on book to my last read by this author, He's Lying About Everything - but as I said, there's a pretty decent recap / backstory beginning which not only jogged my memory, but will give a new reader plenty to get their teeth into this story and follow it easily.
Having said that, I think this will prove as a bit of a spoiler for the first book I'd you were to read them in the other order - so if you have time, grab He's Lying first and enjoy that super twisty read first, before diving straight on to binge this follow on.
Evelyn has moved on to try and escape her past, but even in a new town, it's hard to let go and start to trust again!
I think this really sets a tense atmosphere right from the start and remembering what happened before set me on edge from the outset.
Although the small town setting could be cosy and much easy to keep track of what's going on - there's also an ominous claustrophobic feeling too which made me feel like there was always someone looking over my shoulder.
This was again a super twisty read and I couldn't help but keep turning those pages to find out what was really going on.
Another great read and I loved that this linked up.
I already can't wait to see what's coming next for us.....
Not Her Daughter is a fast-paced, heart-pounding thriller that hooked me from the very first page. From the start, it’s clear this isn’t a typical family setup — Evelyn and her children, Ben and Nicki, are starting a new life, but someone is determined not to let that happen. The mystery surrounding Evelyn is fascinating, and Robin Mahle does a brilliant job of letting the pieces slowly fall into place during the first half of the book. Then the second half? Absolutely unputdownable. It’s packed with action, tension, and emotional depth — the kind of story that keeps you turning pages late into the night. The twists just keep coming right up until the very end, and I loved every one of them. Mahle manages to blend suspense, heart, and incredible pacing seamlessly. Not Her Daughter is a fast-paced thriller with real emotional weight — Robin Mahle nailed this one!
What an intense read! We meet Evelyn, desperately trying to build a new, safe life for her children, Ben and Nicky, but her dark past has come back to haunt her. This is a fast-paced domestic thriller that grabs you instantly. The atmosphere is intensely foreboding as Evelyn battles one crisis after another to protect her children. I was completely invested, rooting for her all the way through this relentless story. The narrative is packed with twists and turns, making you constantly question who knows the truth and who can be trusted. The dark backstory is expertly woven in and kept me turning pages late into the wee small hours. With an ending that is tied up as neatly as a soft toy wrapped in a bow, this is perfect for fans of dramatic domestic thrillers. I received an advance copy of this book and this is my own opinion.
Dare I say that book 2 was even better than book 1?! This book was full of incredible plot twists. I absolutely love Mahle’s writing style, and how she creates such a strong feeling of tension and suspense throughout her books. The plots that Mahle creates are absolutely incredible, making you desperate to know what’s going to happen next. I really liked getting to know Evelyn into a second book too, it was nice to have an MC that I was so invested in expanded into a second novel. Honestly, the way she described the trauma of Ben (the young child of the FMC) following book 1 was honestly so well done, it broke my heart multiple times. Although you could read this as a standalone, I do really recommend reading book 1 (He’s Lying about Everything) too because it is BRILLIANT and really lays the groundwork for this story.
My Thoughts: as always with Robins books this is fast paced, utterly chilling & impossible to put down!
We find out very early on that Evelyn isn’t Nicky’s biological mum, we know there’s more to it & that Ben is telling everyone that Nicky isn’t his sister but we don’t yet know how much truth is in that & if it is true then who is the mum and what happened?!
People are turning up dead and others are working their way into Evelyn’s life under false pretences.
She thought she had everything but as her world slowly falls apart can she survive with both of her children?
This book had me holding my breath in parts & my heart beating so fast in others..
Very excited to see what she comes up with next, because her books always keep me guessing until the very last page!
Robin Mahle never fails to shock, and this is her best so far! I can't wait for more!
This is the sequel of Evelyns' story but is easily read as a stand-alone. After a disastrous marriage that resulted in the death of her husband, Evelyn flees to start a new life with her young son, Ben, and baby Nicole. The past quickly catches up, though, and her world disintegrates around her. This is a tale of a mothers instinctive actions to safeguard her kids as the story unfolds in a fast-paced and cleverly written story. A psychological thriller that is guaranteed to thrill. I would recommend reading Robin Mahle's. " He's Lying About Everything" first but this is not essential
Not Her Daughter is a fast-moving, gripping psychological thriller filled with so many lies and so much deceit it kept me on the edge of my seat. I recently discovered Robin Mahle and have now read a few of her books. Her writing is flawless with just enough detail to keep the reader hanging on tight. The tension builds throughout the entire book, leading up to an unexpected explosive ending. This is a story about how far a mother can be pushed to keep her kids safe. She is a very relatable character. The emotions are raw and real. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
Thanks to Netgalley and Joffe Books for the advanced copy
Evelyn is a single mum with two children Ben and Nicole, but Evelyn is hiding a secret. She is not Nicole's mother. Her husband had an affair and Nicole is his daughter, but both he and her birth mum are dead, and Evelyn has taken her in to be brought up alongside Ben. She thought no one would know, but it seems somebody does and they was the baby back. I was gripped by this book nearly all the way through until I got to the ending. I felt it was a bit rushed and it left me with quite a few questions, so I hope I am not being mean but am giving it 4 stars rather than the 5 I thought I would give it.
Generally it began good and seemed to jump all over the place. I don't like given bad reviews yet, I kept thinking it'd get better. Many times I almost just stopped reading it. Weak characters , the plot was the worst. I found the ending the best part of the whole book. Could it be because it was over? Disappointing and I should have given less stars , or none. The work and attempt by the author was considered . possibly one of the most boring books I ever read. Yes, I won't be doing that again. If you like to fall asleep frequently this book will be helpful.. Im a bit of a speedy reader and it took me forever to finish. Good luck and keep trying.
you have got to read this book to believe it. The chapters just get better.
I am not a thriller reader or a book that does keep you in suspense through all the chapters. For me, this is what this book did kept me in suspense enough to want to finish it till the end which normally doesn’t happen the only thing I didn’t quite enjoy was not finding out where her detective friend ended up he kind of just dropped off the end of the book.. But I still enjoyed the book right till the end so much so that there were parts of the book that I had to read more than once to make sure I was understanding what was happening..
Oh wow. What a well written story that provides twists, turns and hold your breath moments.
When Evelyn starts anew with her children, she finds out being more than a single mother who works and the time restraints she has makes her susceptible to asking for help. Especially when she thinks she’s found the perfect answer to it all. However as the storyline continues, things begin to happen and Evelyn and her children are caught up in it, in a way that surprises the reader.
I throughly enjoyed this story, which had me intrigued from the first page.
I really enjoyed He's Lying About Everything by this author and as this was a follow on from that book I knew I would love it, and I wasn't wrong. I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting.
The writing was engaging and really drew me in from the first page and held me in its clutches until the very end. The story line is perfect;y paced, filled with tension and suspense and kept me on the edge of my seat with twists that kept me guessing all the way through.
A first for me from this author, but i believe it is a follow on story to "Hes Lying About Everything"
It didnt stop the story being enjoyable. The story dips into the original book throughout.
Evelyn discovers her her husband Ben has had an affair, and has a child from that relationship. Having left with both children, we catch up with Evelyn who is rebuilding her life.
She gets a job in a law firm, the children are settled with their new nanny, but all is not as it seems.
This book is full of twists and turns - trust no-one! A fab read!!!
This book made me feel tense, emotional and curious. What a toxic family Tyler belonged to!!! OMW! They were all insane!! I stayed up late into the night to read this, I just had to find out what the heck happened to Evelyn and the children.
As always, Robin Mahle knows how to grab the attention of the reader, and keep it. I am a big fan of her books, and have read several, but really need to read more.
I’m not sure I’d have made the same choices as Evelyn, but she’s doing her best to handle a tough situation after losing her husband and dealing with the child he fathered during an affair. The biggest giveaway is her son, whose behavioral issues and comments she tries to hide. Evelyn finds what seems like the perfect sitter for her children, but perfect doesn’t always mean right. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
First, thank you Netgalley & Joffe Books for this ARC!
I should mention that this is a sequel to He’s Lying About Everything, however, you can also easily read as a standalone. It was yet another suspenseful story I did enjoy. I was still not the biggest fan of the characters, however, just like during book one, it did not bother me in any way. The writing style and the tension were enough already to keep me glued to the book until the last page was turned. Well done yet again!
I loved that this follows on from He’s Lying About Everything, although you don’t have to read the previous book to enjoy this as recaps feature. This was such a twisty tale I even shouted out once and scared my dog (and husband 🤣) the story built so much tension and suspicion as it progressed I had no idea where it was going. A great read I’d highly recommend plus lots of other books by this author that have already tempted me.
This book is the follow-up to the amazing He’s Lying About Everything. It also does not disappoint! Robin Mahle really knows how to weave a web of lies and secrets. Not Her Daughter will have your head spinning from the many twists and turns the story takes. I finished it in one day because I just had to know how it was going to end! I don’t know how she does it but Ms. Mahle just wrote another five star thriller that will have you wanting to read all of her books! Thank you Robin for the advanced copy given only for my honest review. You have made me a loyal follower and I will continue to read everything you write!!
OMG. What another intense book from Robin. It was more late night reading for me as was either other readers. What a family.
Sorry for such a short review but I thoroughly recommend this book for your reading pleasure. In fact any of Robins books guarantee you a great read. Don't miss out on this one.
