Seventeen-year-old Josh Sandison has been waiting his whole life to go to university. Gifted—and bullied for being different—he hopes moving away to study will mean a change for the better. Instead, he encounters the unexpected, when strange things start happening in his room—the blinds falling down by themselves and notes from an illiterate prankster.

Add to this the myth of the haunted third floor, and cynical Josh has had just about enough when Sean Tierney arrives, three days late and with not a penny to his name. The two strike up an unlikely friendship, bonded by their passion for learning and compassion for others.

But will their intellectual prowess be enough to solve, once and for all, the mystery of the third floor?

Review to come when I am over the flu, AGAIN!

I'm FINALLY back to review this awesome tale of college days, getting laid and ghosts.

GHOSTS!

I apparently like reading Debbie McGowan out of order, so other people who knew these characters already probably got something else out of this book completely. But for me, they were all brand new and it was kind of like this ...

First we have Josh.

Blond, smart, a bit uptight and gay? I'm guessing gay.

Then we have Sean.

A bit rumpled, laid back and interested in any sandwich girl that comes his way.

They meet and they just click, like you sometimes do with people, and become instant friends.

But as they attend class and parties and Sean makes time with girls, they also HAVE A MYSTERY TO SOLVE!

Josh's room appears to be haunted by the legendary third-floor ghost!

But is it really a ghost or is it any one of a number of suspicion people.

The crying boy on the third floor?

Donna?

Xander?

Just to name a few.

This was a great read. I really grew to LOVE Josh and Sean. It is well done like all of McGowan's work, the characters so well developed they feel nearly real. There's the seriousness and the angst but there is also the fun and the reminder of what it was like back in your own school days.

And there is a haunted dorm room.

A haunted dorm room! :D

Yep! Loved it!

Oh, and please, please, please let Josh end up with George.

I am a huge fan of Debbie McGowan's books, but this one really blew me away. I will come back to do a proper review once I can do it justice .

I'm back. :D
This is quite different to Debbie's other books in several ways. The characters are very young, and just starting out at college. Debbie captures the giddy excitement, the trepidation and sheer glee of getting away from home for the first time. I found the descriptions of University life to be evocative and poignant, setting me off on remembering my own college days, the successes and failures. Debbie writes with insight and kindness, showing us those aspects of the young people that make them seem very real.
It is an atmospheric book, and while it is lighter than some of the others in this series, there is still the characteristic hints at real psyches, real lives, social observations, and even some cultural embroidery.
This is a perfect read, either as a stand alone, or as an introduction to the wonderful parallel universe that is in Debbie McGowan's head.
I always love reading Debbie's books because I know that she will deliver with her usual lashings of style, humour, sensitivity and that certain something that is ...just Debbie.
A lovely treat. :D

Hell, it's not even ROMANCE!!! Dua, yah DUA, MF sex scenes yang ada not based on something romantic, tapi lebih ke "gw lagi ngganggur nih, 'itu' yuk..."

*sigh*

Yaudah.. ceritanya tentang Josh dan Sean sehari-hari di asrama, kuliah, parteyyy, Sean banging girls left and right....

Sebenernya kalo ceritanya murni persahabatan Josh - Sean gw fine-fine aja...

(maaf bukannya under estimate psikologi, cuma gw gak ngerti aja gitu...)

Terus sexuality nya Josh jugak gak jelas!
Waktu Sean nanya "are you gay?", Josh jawab "i dont think so"

kemudian EPILOG nya dong
jadi epilognya 20 taon kemudian, mereka lg disertasi buat doktoral, tapi 20 taon kemudian kenapa mereka masih gitu-gitu aja?!!!
gak jelas josh & sean gimana, kawin ato apa...
epilog yang bukan epilog, mungkin cuma nunjukin nih yah 20 taon kemudian mereka masih temenan...

FYI, gw belum pernah ngasih 1*, biasanya kalo jelek banget gw dnf, dan kalo jelek tapi selese gw kasih 2*, tapi karena gw merasa ditipu gw kasih 1* dan blacklist author ini

sekian

I really enjoyed this. At first I didn't think I was going to like Josh. I'm not sure exactly why now. I guess because he was just so damn uptight. In the end he really won me over.

I see a George romance in Josh's future and, from the little peeks you get of George and the way he treats him and the patience he seems to show Josh, I'm thinking George already knows and is just waiting for Josh to catch up. *sigh*

Shaun? Well Shaun I related to more than I would like, except for the girl crazy bit. LOL

I was warned before hand that it was not a romance by the author and, using google translate on a particularly low review (I couldn't figure out why any one wouldn't enjoy this), I think I figured out why she felt to need for the warning. Can some readers only appreciate romance? Fucking sad for them. You would miss so many great books that way.

Very enjoyable read. I would certainly read more about these two. I will certainly read more from this author.

Josh, a young man who finds great difficulty in social situations, goes up to university with one of his two best friends, Jess. She is in another faculty and begins to make new friends – people Josh doesn’t think much of. Sean, from a very poor background who has grown up in The Troubles in Belfast, is put in the room next door – on the floor reputed to be haunted. Josh continues to find friendship difficult whereas Sean is a girl-magnet. Their unlikely friendship flourishes and Sean is very helpful to Josh in trying to resolve the goings-on in his room. Can it really be haunted?

This book sensitively explores the relationships of two young men who have grown up very differently but who are mutually supportive in a time of upheaval for them both. It’s quite funny in places and a very easy, enjoyable read. Definitely a winner for me.

This is my story, so I'm going to use this space to clarify something.

To make it absolutely clear:

This is a story of friendship, NOT romance. It contains elements of romance - both heterosexual and homoromantic. It also includes a hint of paranormal mystery. However, it's contemporary young/new adult fiction.

It is a realistic portrayal of the coming of age of two young men from different social backgrounds leaving home to study at an English university.

It is a stand-alone prequel in the Hiding Behind The Couch series. You do NOT need to have read the first prequel Beginnings to make sense of this book, but if you want to read it, you can download it for free from my website: http://debbiemcgowan.co.uk/?n1=public....

If you are the kind of reader who only reads books with a ton of man-on-man action, then this is NOT the book for you, but you might like to try some of my other books, for instance:

CHECKING HIM OUT SERIES:
Checking Him Out (explicit - free)
Checking Him Out For the Holidays (explicit)
Taking Him On (explicit)
Checking In (explicit)

ALSO:
Sugar and Sawdust (explicit - free)
Cherry Pop Valentine (explicit)
When Skies Have Fallen (mildly explicit - free)
Crying in the Rain (mildly explicit)

I loved this gem of a book. The characters, even the ones who don't appear "on-screen," are well-developed. I think this is likely because this book is part of a larger series, so clearly Ms. McGowan knows her characters, and that shines through even though we don't see them all in this installment.
The story is witty and charming. Josh is one of my new favorite characters. He's quirky and interesting, and I loved watching him try to sort things out.

For the benefit of readers, I do want to point out that this is not a romance, and there is no same-sex pairing in this particular story. However, this is definitely one that falls under the bigger rainbow, and anyone who has ever felt the way Josh does will be glad to see themselves reflected in his tale.

I can't wait to get my hands on and. McGowan's other books. She's earned herself a new fan.

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

Another awesome retrospective diversion from the Hiding Behind The Couch series.

I do find myself wondering how Ms. McGowan continues to find things to write about with these characters but each book brings as much joy as the last.

Certainly in my head this was a true to University life as you can get without actually going and as usual the attention to plot and character detail was exemplary.

All in all a cracking read. Definitely highly recommended.

So I haven't been a fan of the two books I read by this author. I didn't hate them, but I went into this book going if I don't enjoy this one than maybe this series is a pass for me. But I actually enjoyed this story a lot more. Josh is an interesting character and I liked his relationship with Sean. I love how direct and how little patience Josh has with people. He's not an easy person to get along with always, but his and Sean's friendship built naturally and somehow they just work as friends.

This book is really about the characters and friendship more than anything else. I enjoyed seeing these guys start their college careers and really try to figure out who they are. I liked Jess and the other side characters here. There was enough in this story for me give it one more book to see where it goes.

I have been waiting for Ruminations for oh-so long. Apparently during the writing there was an incident where someone refused to come down from a roof, but that's all I'm saying.

Well not ALL I'm saying - I'm saying this is yet another brilliantly written and characterised instalment to the Hiding Behind the Couch series. It too me straight back to university myself, and I truly enjoyed seeing how Sean and Josh met. Seeing how Josh has grown as a person since then in the other books was also really intriguing, and it was quite nice to see a character I don't really like much before she because the person I hated!

Loved the intrigue too - there's some mysterious stuff going on in Josh's room, and some salacious things going on in Sean's - and there's definitely something for everyone!

I love Sean and Josh and Jess. This book was witty and cute. The relationship between Sean and Josh is just sweet and innocent.

This book is part of the Hiding Behind the Couch series. Nine friends from high school, their lives and loves – gay, straight and bi – and set in the UK, mainly in England. I would recommend looking at Debbie McGowan’s dedicated website before starting the series as it provides some background which could prove invaluable to non-UK readers.
In Ruminations, Josh Sandison (who isn’t autistic but displays some of the same traits) embarks on a much-anticipated university career. Which university isn’t specified but suffice to say it is outside London. He is living in one of the university’s halls of residence and from the beginning experiences some weird phenomena there. Much of the action takes place in the halls or the cafeteria or in the nearby town as it’s the students rather than the academics which are important to the plot.
He meets another student, Sean Tierney, who has come from Northern Ireland to study psychology, just like Josh. Sean is escaping from a difficult home life, as well as the restrictions of a very conservative community which doesn’t take kindly to gay men. In addition, he’s destitute as his grant hasn’t yet reached his bank account and Josh comes to the rescue. This sets the scene for a very unlikely friendship and sucks Sean into the Hiding Behind the Couch group of friends. There’s no romance between Josh and Sean but no shortage of sex either. This book is about students away from home (or school) for the first time, after all.

I was only slightly familiar with the series; not enough to remember who was who. In reading this I was only interested in Sean, but Josh grew on me.
It's a prequel showing each character when they first met at university. It shows their personality quirks and early experiences.

This book just did not work for me. The writing was fine but the story was just this meandering slice of life that never seemed to have a point. I didn't realize it was part of a series when I started it as I prefer reading in order. It really should be marked as such. Anyway, it just didn't hold my interest and I had to force myself to finish it. Disappointed!
