Problems With the Crown: Book Four of the Fables Saga

Rate this book
The kingdom of Vostok is breaking. Winter refuses to end.

People are freezing on the streets and starving in their homes. Outlaws pillage the countryside, taking anything that isn’t nailed down and slaying those that stand in their way.

For the royal family, that’s only the beginning of their troubles.

Fyo is stranded in the Badlands, where everything is trying to kill him. From trigger-happy locals to a hidden traitor, to the hostile nature itself, all seem eager to put him in the ground for good. To make it back to safety, he’ll have to outfight, outsmart or outrun all that stands in his path, but even then, it’s unlikely everyone will make the return trip home.

His nephew Sergei, still wheelchair bound from his last adventure, learns that the outlaws in the frontier have somehow gotten a man-eating monster to do their bidding. Hardly anyone who sees the beast lives to tell the tale, and the few that do describe a horror unlike anything Sergei has faced before. He’ll have to find a way to kill it despite his injuries, before everyone in Vostok becomes the creature’s dinner.

Having barely escaped an attempt on her life, Leyna finds it difficult to trust anyone these days. That’s not necessarily a bad habit in Vostok politics, where one’s allies in court can stab you in the back just as easily as your enemies. The hard part is figuring out who to trust, and who to send to the dungeons.

Julia never signed up to be a killer. But with her stuck in a freezing country that hates all foreigners, her only ticket out is completing the mission the Feys gave her and the other kill the King and his family, by any means.

The nights grow colder. Knives aim at backs. Enemies close in for the kill. There are endless problems with the crown, and it makes a target of whoever dares to wear it.
