From the very first page, Night Nurse gripped me with an intensity I wasn’t prepared for. The sheer terror woven throughout this story shook me to my core, it’s the kind of fear that lingers long after you’ve turned the last page. Scott Gilles masterfully builds suspense while weaving a storyline that hits you right in the heart, especially when it comes to the parts involving children. Those moments will stay with me forever. This book kept me completely hooked from start to finish. Every chapter ended with me needing to know what happened next, and that ending. wow. Be prepared, because you’ll need a box of tissues nearby. Night Nurse is not just a horror story; it’s an emotional experience filled with heart-stopping fear and unexpected tenderness. An absolute must-read for fans of smart, deeply affecting thrillers.

First, I want to thank Scott Gilles for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.

WOW!! My mind is blown away and literally speechless by Scott Gilles debut Medical Psychological Thriller The Night Nurse!! If you follow my reviews you know I love a good Psychological Thriller but throw in a good medical storyline and well you have a fan for life! Scott this was a 5 star read! I still can’t believe this was your debut novel! You have a gift for writing in this genre! I hope you continue to blow our minds for many books to come.

Kudos to Adam Kleinart for the dark and spooky cover design of The Night Nurse that makes you want to know what the book is about.

Scott wants to thank his better half Emily and for always lifting him up.

OMG Scott in my eyes is a creative genius on so many levels with this book! First off I don’t think I have ever read a Medical Psychological Thriller nor a Psychological Thriller that has pulled on my heart strings and made me tear up multiple times before! So there is a first! WOW! Right away Scott pulled hard on my heart strings penning a letter to his sweet young daughter Chloe who we find out just passed. He was narrating the book as to tell her the events that unfolded.

Scott needs to be commended for his attention to detail, his descriptions, and his metaphors in what he talks about. He shows not tells so much compassion and love he has not just for his daughter but his wife as well.

The Night Nurse took a very wicked and evil turn that was so sick and twisted!!! When I say evil I mean evil! So much so I am going to be looking over my shoulder next time I need to get my blood drawn (and yes I am a hard stick with bad veins that needs to be well hydrated and use a butterfly needle each time. I have horror stories of my own). There were so many sharp twists and turns that kept you on the edge of your seat.

Compassion is what I felt for all of those involved! I wanted to reach in and hugged those that were affected by the sick monsters!!

Ohh waterworks wouldn’t stop flowing as Chloe wrote her own letter in response back to her Dad. You see, my Dad passed away 11 months ago and I would give anything for some sort of communication with him. So the way Scott wrote this into the storyline was incredibly sweet.

If you love Medical Psychological Thrillers like I do you must add this to your TBR list!! It is a must read!!

I don't usually read thrillers, nor do I read medical fiction. But, upon being bequeathed a digital rendition of the book in question in friendly negotiation for the exchange of an honest telling of my opinions on said book, I gave The Night Nurse a try, branching out of my usual preferred genre.

It was a little hard for me to get into, being an unfamiliar genre and style. I did struggle a little with the POV style, (omniscient... sort of. Or omniscient-adjacent? It's a little confusing.) Jumping from POV to POV, sometimes within the span of a paragraph, was a little hard to follow at times. However, for the most part, it didn't effect the overall read.

Once I got to the halfway mark, though, it got a lot harder for me to put it down. I wasn't hooked from page 1 but once the hook caught me, it did not let go nor did it slow down.

Blood? Ran cold.
Stomach? Churned.
Emotional state? Wrecked.
I cried. (I cry easily... take it as you will.)

I don't think I'll keep reading medical thrillers after this book, but I am glad to have read it. There are definitely scenes and characters that will stick with me for a long, long time.

Four stars, mainly because of the POV confusion, and the handful of errors, (I'm a nit-picky self-editor and it's hard to turn off. For an indie novel, there really weren't that many errors — well done!) (Also... I read e-book format, and really really wanted to slam the book shut or chuck it across the room several times. E-books just aren't the same. But that's an afterthought, not to do with the rating 🤣)

Completely unhinged and heartbreaking, and also mildly hilarious.

This one had me laughing and questioning whyyyy I was laughing when it's all so horrific at the same time. Totally genius in the way that characters manipulate truth and turn it into evil. Almost slapstick levels of gore, alongside some serious topics and amazing character development.
I don't think I've ever read anything like this before. Totally loved it, 10/10 recommend. Go grab yourselves a copy!

This is a story that simply left me breathless from start to finish. I couldn't put this book down—it is a truly terrifying story!
The narrative is so incredibly well-constructed that it has instantly been etched into my memory. I’ve always said that hospitals are terrifying places that can cause anxiety and intense fear, and this story explores that theme with chilling effectiveness.
I am truly grateful to the author for giving me the opportunity to read this Advanced Reader Copy (ARC). I am very happy with the ending and definitively give this book Five Stars. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a story that will simply leave them speechless.

I really enjoyed this book - gritty, fast paced, and utterly heartbreaking at times. Some of the chapters were shorter than I'd have liked, but it was a wonderful story of pain and justice for a beautiful little girl. Very well written!

Really great read! I enjoyed the pacing, the characters, and the storytelling method. Scott either really did his research or works in the medical field, the medical scenes were great! Definitely worth your time!

.....

I have no words😭

Actually, take that back. I do have A LOT to say. So might wanna have a seat because this is going to be a LONGGGG ride.

It was beautifully written. I loved all the little jokes in there, but some I didnt understand but Stella told me those were inside jokes. lol, alrighty. I loved how it was written like a letter to Chloe, and explaining everything. It was really cool how it was written in first person and 3rd person omniscient.

But to be honest, I had to put the book down more times than any other book I've ever read in the entire life. I also cried more in this book than the powerless series. It was hard to read it since the story and Chloe were kinda based off of Stella. And since I know Stella, and shes my neighbor, it was hard to read; but you know what? I got through with the book and finished it tonight. (December 4th of 2025)

But I also crashed out a couple of times when Addison and Lila died. Both literally my favorite doctors out of the whole book. But I know someday, or any chapter, that they were going to die. Also, Literally, I dont like Edward at all. He can burn. He can go bye bye. I also felt back for Claudia and Richard for being is Edward's so called "Cult." They should have ran when they had the chance, but I dont blame them. I also felt bad for the other kids who died. But may peace be with them.

Okay, But the letter from Edward to the Miller's was actually making me going to crash. It was a long letter Ive ever read. 55 pages, Scott. 55. I was so invested to the letter as I got to read how Edward was like as a kid and how he became who he was today. (Book wise) I mean, he basically started a Cult and im never will join if I was there. See ya! Bye Bye!

Now, I want to talk about the ending of the book. Chapters 66 and 67. I cried so hard when I read the letter from Chloe to her father. I was sitting in the kitchen floor as Jess was finishing up dinner. I had tears in my eyes as I read that letter. They didnt fall, surprisingly. But I had them. I love how strong the father and daughter bond was there and how I could read it. And the love between Wenslow and Joey. Beautiful. ❤️

The Author Notes....I cried while reading those. Yes, I know. Im emotional. But It was beautiful to Read. Im glad Stella got better and shes out of the hospital. Im glad your mother got to read the first draft before passing. Sorry for your lost. But shes in a better place, and im glad shes okay. I can see the love that you have for your Wife, Emily and your children, Stella and Sam. Honestly, your a freaking awesome Father and Husband, Scott. Don't give up.

I also crashed out on Stella while reading this Book. And all she would send was a smiling emoji or something like the lines of "Welp," "Okay Buddy," or "I dont know man, that's my dad." Yeah, Im pretty sure she gets it from you, lol Im glad that I have you and your family as my Neighbors. Its a wonderful experience to be with in my life. Im glad that I have Stella as my best friend. Im glad I have those moments with her. Its the best Experience of my life too.

You are Awesome, Scott. You made my day on December 1st, of 2025. The first Monday of the month of December. I was so happy that you got to sign my book. MADE MY DAY. I wasnt feeling the best that day, but after you signed it, It helped a lot. Thank you for that.

Now I cant wait for other Books you write Scott. It will probably be another emotional roller-coaster for me, but whatever. Its probably going to be fine. I hope, lol.

A bit if a mixed book. The way it portrays parental love and grief rings true and is clearly inspired by the author's experiences. The antagonist is an evil cult leader and is an evocative example of the sort of evil that walks amongst us in broken minds.

There is a lot to recommend here although those uncomfortable with themes of child loss should be wary.
