She's the boss. He's the captain. Falling was easy, but hiding it? That’s the hard part.
Sutton: Owning the River City Renegades was supposed to be a dream—power suits, big wins, nothing but control. Instead, I’m juggling PR disasters, an opinionated board, and a very public reminder that I’m single.
The last thing I need is our team captain, Campbell Stockton, making my pulse skip like a puck on bad ice. He’s charming, infuriating, and completely off-limits. I built my empire on keeping business and pleasure in separate zones—so why does one look from him make me want to break every rule?
Campbell: Two things matter: my dad’s health and my shot at the NHL. Distractions are a luxury I can’t afford—especially not Sutton Mahoney, the gorgeous, untouchable woman who signs my paycheck.
Then, one late-night rescue in a dark parking lot turns into something I can’t ignore. She’s under pressure to be perfect. I’m fighting for my future. And suddenly, the one line we can’t cross is the only one we both want to.
Now we’re skating the edge of scandal, and one wrong move could take us both down.
But when it comes to Sutton, playing it safe was never in the game plan.
Offside Secrets is a closed door hockey romcom that includes tropes like workplace romance, forced proximity, forbidden relationship, and found family...sprinkled with a touch of holiday magic. This is the third book in a series, but can be read as a stand alone. Be warned: this one is filled with tons of tension, sizzling chemistry, and swoony kisses!
Content warning: This IS a lighthearted and fun romantic comedy, but there are subjects mentioned in this book like a parent with a chronic disease (RA).
Anne Kemp is a bestselling author of romantic comedies. She loves reading (and she doesn’t it ridiculously fast, too!), gluten-free baking (because everyone needs a hobby that makes them crazy), and finding time to binge-watch her favorite shows. She grew up in Maryland but made Los Angeles her home until she encountered her own real-life meet-cute at a friend's wedding where she ended up married to one of the groomsmen. For real.
Anne now lives on the Kapiti Coast in New Zealand, and even though she was married at Mt. Doom, no…she doesn’t have a Hobbit. However, she and her husband do have a terrier named George Clooney and when she’s not writing, she’s usually with them taking a long walk on the river by their home.

Hockey + Closed Door Rom-Com? Yes, please! Part of series with recurring characters? Count me in!
Offside Secrets is the 3rd book in a series. This book centers around two main characters: Sutton and Campbell. Sutton is the owner of the River City Renegades semi-pro hockey team. She is a girl boss (though she doesn’t like to be called that) who defies gender roles in the male dominated field of hockey team ownership. She has her best friends FMCs Elle from Goalie Interrupted and Anna from Faking the Faceoff and the success of rebuilding the Renegades after one of her brothers nearly sabotaged it. The profits are up and she’s been under more scrutiny from the board of directors because they don’t like her leadership.
Campbell is the captain of the hockey team and is really coming into his own as a hockey player. He has a lot on his plate including taking care of an ailing father. After he helps Sutton with car trouble and offers to be her Gala date, the two main characters are drawn to each other in a way that might not be appropriate because she’s you know, his boss? They can’t deny the attraction they feel, but are both worried about each other in the sweetest ways. (This is where the dual POV really helps!) After some twists and turns (no spoilers!) Sutton and Campbell decide to risk it by going all in for each other. No surprise, it works!
Pros: -Friends are important. I loved how Sutton had her girl friends who gave good advice. I loved the friendships between Campbell and his teammates who had his back. Having good friends really does make life bearable. -Powerful women! Can’t say enough about squashing gender norms when women are the boss and men can’t handle it. Loved that about this book. -Closed door romance - sweet kisses and affection between characters without bedroom business. Awesome! -Age Gap work place romance? Not my favorite trope but It worked in this book. Though Sutton being 5 years older than Campbell isn’t that big of a gap, is it? And it shouldn’t matter when we’re all adults! -Hockey - the best sport there is! There wasn’t as much hockey action in this book but the story worked. The balance between character development and hockey was well written.
Cons: None! Loved every minute of this book. The only question I have left? Will we get Sawyer’s love story in Alexandria? (Fingers crossed!)
If you love hockey romance books, this is a must read! I’d suggest reading the first two books in the series - all the characters are connected and you’ll want that as background.
Offside Secrets is the third book in the River City Renegades series by Anne Kemp. While it can be read as a standalone, it does feature characters from the other books in the series. This sweet hockey romcom highlights Sutton and Campbell’s love story, and is told in a dual POV.
The story centers around Sutton, the female owner of the AHL River City Renegades, and Campbell, the team captain who is the primary care taker for his chronically ill father. Sutton and Campbell both deny the chemistry simmering between them, as they each devote time and energy to those around them instead of allowing themselves happiness. A late-night car rescue pulls them together and their chemistry becomes harder and harder to deny, despite personal and professional challenges on both sides.
This book is lighthearted, engaging and fun to read. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Sutton and Campbell—this book has plenty of swoon-worthy moments that made me smile. While the chemistry between them is the driving force of the story, Anne Kemp does a good job creating dynamic characters—and Sutton and Campbell develop individually while their relationship builds. I enjoy how Anne included familiar faces from the other Renegades books; it was fun to see the relationships among the characters continue to play out in this story. There is plenty of story development, keeping me engaged and eager to find out what happens next.
There is a slight reverse age gap (she’s 5 years older) and the story addresses issues around power dynamics in the workplace, harassment, slander and a parent facing illness (not terminal).
Some of my favorite elements of this story: * I enjoyed the dynamic between Campbell and his dad. I appreciated that the story included how the dynamic between parent and child can shift as we get older.
* Sutton’s struggles leading in a male-dominated field are super relatable. The story doesn’t shy away from the double standards women in leadership (and/or a male-dominated field) face. This element is not overt, but handled in a real and engaging way, creating a feeling of empowerment instead of ostracism.
*The couple face a shared adversary instead of a third act break-up.
*Good friends and family—both Sutton and Campbell have strong support systems that play important roles in the story.
Fans of hockey romcoms, a guaranteed HEA, and stories with relatable characters will love reading this book! I highly recommend Offsides Secrets!
I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Offside Secrets follows Sutton, the powerhouse owner of the River City Renegades, and Campbell, the team’s steady, big-hearted captain who’s desperately trying to balance his NHL dreams with caring for his dad. They both know falling for each other is the one line they absolutely cannot cross… and yet, the pull between them is impossible to ignore.
A late-night parking lot rescue kicks off a slow-burn full of tension, sweetness, and so many moments where they try (and fail) to stay away. I loved Sutton’s strength navigating a male-dominated world, and Campbell’s quiet, loyal support—even when life gets messy. Their chemistry? Off the charts. Their kisses? Perfection. Their determination to protect each other? My whole heart.
This installment has everything I adore about the Renegades series: found family vibes, supportive friendships, and emotional depth tucked inside a fun, lighthearted romcom. Even as book 3, it reads easily as a standalone, but fans of the series will love seeing familiar faces pop in.
If you’re in the mood for a tension-filled, boss/employee, slightly-forbidden hockey romance that keeps things clean while still giving all the swoony feels—this one is a must-read.
Thank you Anne Kemp for the opportunity to read Offside Secrets!
“Some dreams don’t need to be solved. They just need to be believed in long enough to find you.”
What a delightful read! This is my second book by Anne Kemp and she’s quickly becoming a favorite author of mine. I loved this sweet, closed door romance.
The author does a fantastic job of adding depth to her characters. I loved that Campbell (the MMC) is the captain of the hockey team and beloved by all, but is working hard so he can provide for his dad who is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. It made his character relatable and endearing.
I love how Sutton (the FMC) is fiercely independent and hardworking. She was witty, sharp and kind. A highlight quote of hers: “I’m not going to apologize for refusing to let other people’s discomfort with successful women dictate how I live my life.”
Overall this was a quick and fun read. I cannot wait to read the rest of her books!
Another fantastic book by Anne Kemp. Book 3 in the River City Renegades but can be read as a standalone. Sutton, the owner of the Renegades, is such a strong, independent woman who knows how to live in a man’s world. But throw in some growing feelings for the team’s captain, Campbell, and she’s out of her element. Campbell is such a good guy, how can she even hesitate? He’s kind, considerate, compassionate, loyal, and so sweet. Loved watching them together.

~She’s the boss. He’s the captain. Falling was easy, but hiding it? That’s the hard part…
-OFFSIDE Secrets, is a cute closed door hockey romcom that includes tropes like workplace romance, forced proximity, forbidden relationship, found family, and sprinkled with a touch of holiday magic. This is the third book in a series, but can be read as a stand alone. It is filled delightfully with lots of tension, sparkling chemistry, and so many swoony kisses. I really liked how this story shy away from the double standards women in leadership (and/or a male-dominated field) face. This element is not over the top but gracefully handled in a real and engaging way, with feels empowering. It was unique how dear characters are relatable and both face a shared difficulty. Watching them navigate and rise above despite personal and professional challenges together was inspiring. Watching characters defy expectations and find happiness throughout had my heart. This quick paced story is worth the cute read!🏒🙌🏻📚
“Your happiness matters too.”
•Content: power dynamics in the workplace, harassment, slander, a parent with rheumatoid arthritis illness (not terminal), inflammation pain, sports bar scene, some drinking/one character gets drunk, death of a loved one (in past; mentioned on page), some minor language, no violence, kisses only.
“Maybe, sometimes, people need fixing away.”

This is the 3rd book in the River City Renegades. It is a kisses-only contemporary romcom about hockey. It can be read as a standalone.
Are you in your hockey era? Do you like workplace romance? How about some reverse age gap? If so, this may be the book for you.
Honesty none of those things are my favorites. But that doesn't make this a bad book. It had tension and swoon factors. It just wasn't my personal favorite topics / tropes. But there wasn't anything wrong with the writing or the book itself. Just a personal preference.
I was given the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy of this book by the author. I honestly don't remember requesting it since I knew I Amy not be the target audience, but it showed up in my book funnel library. I have read and enjoyed other books by this author, so I read it and am leaving an honest review. I did listen to the last half using Kindle assistant reader because I just don't have a lot of ebook reading time right now.
Offside Secrets is the third book in the River City Renegades series written by Anne Kemp. However, this book can be read as a standalone book (this was my first book in the series, I don't know how I missed the first two books.) This is a closed door romance, that touches on several tropes including age gap and forbidden workplace romance but with so much more too.
While this story revisits old friends, it focuses on Sutton Mahoney, owner of the AHL River City Renegades team, and Campbell Stockton, captain of the River City Renegades. Sutton has taken over runner the team after her stepbrother ran them into the ground, she has fought hard to bring the team back to a prosperous, flourishing team. She feels like she is constantly being judged harshly for trying to work in a "man's world", and she doesn't feel she gets a fair shake. Every move she makes, decision, date for the evening or even her clothing is continually criticized, dissected, and overly mansplained. She just wants to be treated equally and fairly. Then comes Campbell, the captain of the team, who is focused on his career and taking care of his father. He wants to be the best captain, be the best leader, be the most supportive, take care of his father, and work towards advancing his career in the NHL. Campbell is a natural caretaker, it is just who he is. When he sees someone in need, he helps especially when he finds Sutton in broken down car one night.
The feelings are instant and so strong between Sutton and Campbell, but both struggle to figure out what the next step can be and let themselves get in their own way. Sutton wants to take seriously and not hurt the team's image or Campbell's chance to advance, but she forgets to take into consideration what Campbell might be thinking and feeling too. Campbell gets caught up waiting for Sutton to come around that he lets her get into her own head and get a little lost. But with the support of amazing family, friends and teammates, Sutton and Campbell are able to find their way out of the many crossroads and head in same direction eventually.
I loved this story. Watching Sutton and Campbell work through their personal roadblocks, learning to let others in, accept help and just be open to what is next was so much fun. I highly recommend this book. The book was hard to put down, keep me turning just one more page and looking forward to what would happen next. I am excited to see if Sawyer finds his future......
I received an ARC of this book and am leaving an honest, voluntary review.
Offside Secrets by Anne Kemp is the third book in her River City Renegades series but can be read as a standalone. I do recommend reading all of them because they were all so good and there is a lot of overlapping characters. This book is told from a dual POV following, Sutton and Campbell. Sutton is owner of the Renegades and Campbell is the captain of the Renegades. Sutton is trying to break the gender gap in hockey where she is a woman in a very male dominated field. Campbell has a lot on his plate after his father is diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and all the doctor & medicine bills start piling up. Campbell is the ultimate book boyfriend. These two had such great chemistry and attraction. I absolutely adored this book & couldn't get enough of Sutton and Campbell. This book was filled with tons of swoon-worthy moments & wonderful side characters. I cannot wait for what comes next from Anne!
💙 Forbidden Romance 🏒 Secret Relationship 💙 Found Family 🏒 No Third Act Breakup 💙 Workplace Romance 🏒 He's The Captain 💙 She Owns The Team 🏒 Colorful Side Characters
“Kiss, marry, kill. Sawyer, Campbell, or that new guy, Maxwell Rivers.” “I think he wants to be called Max,” Elle says as she sits up straighter. “And I’d kiss Max, for sure.” “No,” I say firmly. “We’re not doing this.” I then point a finger at Elle. “And I’m pretty sure it’s Maxwell. Not Max. Just Maxwell. Also, hello… Dixon?”
Sawyer’s face falls. “Wait. I thought I was Thing Two?” “Nope. She made you Thing One after that time you tried to flirt with the head of PR and accidentally emailed your player bio to the entire team signed ‘Love, Sawyer.’” “It was supposed to say ‘Later,’” he mutters. “And yet,” Campbell says, “the love really came through.”
“I’m in the middle of having a small disagreement with my car.” He sets his bag down and leans slightly toward my window. “What’s it doing?” “Nothing. Absolutely nothing. It’s on strike.” Campbell grins. “Mind if I take a look?”
As the elevator doors close behind her, I realize something that hits me harder than any check I’ve ever taken on the ice: Sutton Mahoney doesn’t just understand my world— she respects it. And that might be the most attractive thing about her yet.
I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.
We are back in River City, Virginia preparing to get up close with the captain and the team owner. Now before you make any assumptions, I never saw this pair coming… I figured that Sutton would find a connection with a coach. As for the harsh reality that surrounds Campbell I would never have guessed. This story is way bigger than just the two of them and their respective roles for the team!
Sutton has revamped the River City Renegades teams since she took over responsibilities after her brother, Jimmy, was ousted! The team now thrives and are well respected within the league, even if some people still snicker about a woman owning the team. Her entire franchise respects her, and the captain of the team is no different. But occasionally the board members like to remind her that her clout might go a little further if she was in a committed relationship! Cue the eye roll. When such an occasion arises and the captain of the team overhears her plight, he offers to step up and be her plus-one! Boy does he ever! Things get more interesting and complicated!
Campbell is not just your average, team captain, his leadership and dependability extend off ice too! Between lending a hand when noticing someone with a dead battery to being his dad’s full-time caregiver to lending himself to Sutton in her moment of need (even when it’s rather last minute)! Let’s backtrack a moment, what he does for his dad and his condition is second to none. Having lost his mom early on his life, he rose to the occasion and has always been there for his dad. So, accompanying Sutton was just part of his fixing nature but also part couldn’t fight the attraction any longer.
This story is full of simple moments that add up to being something big and defying the expectations that the world may place upon you! This is a book that makes you want to cheer for Campbell, whether he was on the ice or off! You also can’t help but feel some pride in knowing that Sutton is doing a fantastic job in a male dominated world without any pettiness! While this is the end of the Renegades series, it leads seamlessly into the Dominion one! Can’t wait!
Offside Secrets is the third book in Kemp's River City Renegades series. This hockey romance features 35-year old Sutton Mahoney and 29-year old Campbell Stockton.
As the owner of the Renegades, Sutton has to constantly prove herself in what is a male-dominated industry. In addition to having to deal with the board, and sponsors, she also has to deal with crises and conflicts, but she is a powerhouse. She seems to have it all, except love.
Campbell, the team captain, has a lot of pressure on his shoulders. Not only does he need to lead by example and ensure morale remains strong, when he's not working he is dealing with his father's illness. He was recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and due to the pain and inflammation, it can be quite debilitating. Campbell loves his father and makes a point of doing everything he can to help him.
One evening before leaving the rink, Campbell sees Sutton in her car. It turns out she's having car trouble and can't get her BMW to start. Campbell, who admires Sutton and wishes he had a woman like her by his side, offers his help. He uses his cables to give her a boost and then goes above and beyond and researches new car batteries for her.
Another evening, Campbell happens upon Sutton and her friend who are discussing an upcoming gala which she needs to attend, but was advised to come with a date. Campbell offers his services to accompany and support her.
The two end up spending time together and cannot deny their mutual attraction. That said, there is concern about appearances and a reluctance to move forward given this would be a workplace romance. Will they or won't they? You'll have to read it for yourself to find out.
This was a fun, lighthearted and easy read. I always enjoy stories with powerful women, so this definitely satisfied me. There is great chemistry between the two main characters. The build up to their first real kiss was perfection. They are relatable and engaging, and I was rooting for them.
I love when authors write strong FMCs dominating in a male dominated field. Offside Secrets, book 3 in the River City Renegades series by Anne Kemp will have you falling in love with the MCs, while cheering on the FMC for holding her own among big, burly hockey players, defying men who want to see her fail, and fighting feelings she develops for one of her own. Also bringing back beloved characters from the first 2 books in the series, this book has it all I love in closed door romances.
Sutton is the owner of the Renegades who has worked hard to rebuild the organization after sabotage almost ruined it. Despite all the good she has done and leadership she has shown, the board of directors is watching her like a hawk. They just can’t handle seeing a single woman turn things around after a man almost ruined it. I adored Sutton’s perseverance and resilience in this book. She knows she is a boss babe and owns it, even if she hates the term boss babe.
Campbell is the Renegades captain. He is also the primary caregiver to his elderly father, who suffers from a chronic illness. He works hard on his team and respects what the new owner has done to turn the team around. Always one to help, when he overhears the board giving Sutton a hard time, he offers just that, his help. They tread lightly at first, due to the complexity of them being employer and employee, but as time passes, neither one can ignore the attraction building.
Anne never fails to show the importance of the little things in her books. Yes, there are grand gestures, but these are only possible due to the romance that has been established through simple acts and moments. She reminds readers where there is a will, there is a way; especially in matters of the heart. A lighthearted, fun read that will leave you giddy.
As always, review any author notes before reading.
What to Expect: 🏒Secret Relationship 💞Found Family 🏒Workplace Romance 💞Forbidden Romance 🏒Hockey Captain MMC 💞Team Owner FMC 🏒Closed Door Romance
A female-owned hockey team, a snake in the grass and a slightly forbidden romance make this incredible book a delight to read. There are characters you will love and cheer for and others you will want to fall on their face.
Sutton is the owner of the River City Renegades. She is a woman in a man's world, and she does look much better in her power suit. She is always running up hill as everything she does or says is taken apart with a fine tooth comb. She cannot afford any chance of impropriety.
Campbell plays for the River City Renegades and is the team captain. He would a love a shot at the NHL. However, taking care of his ailing father is the most important thing in his life. He is a gentleman in every sense of the word with first class character.
After some unflattering photos are released of Sutton with Campbell, the PR nightmare that Sutton has always avoided has begun. But just like many other celebrity photos, there is always the chance of another story behind the photo.
Sutton was fantastic. She was a professional and a caring individual. She was also strong. I loved her group of friends that she could turn to in times of crisis. She deserved happiness as much as any other woman.
Campbell was a complete dear. I wanted to reach into the pages of the book and give him a hug. His moral character should never have been called into question. This man was first class in every sense of the word. Others could take lessons from him in how to live their lives in such an unselfish manner.
The River City Renegades were lucky to have these two in their positions. I really enjoyed how the author wove this story together. There was a little wariness, but also a lot of anticipation of how this would be played out. These are the things that kept me glued to the pages. If this author's name is on the front, you can never go wrong. I laughed and smiled, but I also had some "oh how sweet" moments as well while sighing a little.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Sutton has her hands full being the owner of a minor league hockey team – as a woman. She has to prove herself to the board over and over again just because she’s a woman, which is frustrating, as she has turned the team around since she took over from her brother Jimmy, who had no idea what he was doing. Now, as the winter gala is fast approaching, the board is insisting she bring a ‘plus one’ to show her stability to potential sponsors and donors. To top it off, her brother, Gavin, who was supposed to come as her plus one, isn’t able to travel at this time.
As Sutton heads out to her car after a long, trying day, her car doesn’t start. As she’s deciding what to do, the team captain, Campbell, comes over to her car and asks if he can help. It looks like a dead battery, so Campbell jump-starts her car, telling her to get a new battery in the morning. Later that night, Sutton receives a text from Campbell to let her know the type of battery her car needs and pricing so she won’t be taken advantage of the next day. How sweet.
Sutton runs into Campbell, and somehow Campbell overhears her dilemma of needing a plus one for the gala and volunteers to go. At the gala, they are compatible and work well together with the sponsors and donors. Something seems to click between them. But since Sutton owns the team, and Campbell is the team captain, she doesn’t feel it’s appropriate to pursue things further. Topping it off, photos from the gala posted to social media are blown out of proportion. Between the social media disaster, Campbell’s hope to move to the NHL with scouts attending their next game, Sutton is determined that anything with Campbell is not possible.
Can Campbell persuade Sutton to see where things will go between them? Does Campbell make it to the NHL? What would that mean if he and Sutton decide to pursue a relationship? A fun read with lots of twists to keep you guessing how things will resolve. Highly recommend.
Well it’s certainly no secret that I highly regard Anne Kemp’s writing . It’s inviting and the characters she writes about are endearing ,exciting and sometimes even fighting and even tearing but with joy . These Hickey books about a girl and a boy . And oh boy was this book good . I’m not surprised by this ,of course it’s the chef’s kiss ,not to be missed . She’s the master if her craft,I’m not daft…Anyway on with my review of the book ,let’s take a look. Campbell Stockton is the River City Renegades team captain and Sutton Mahoney the new owner. She’s picking up the pieces and taking the team to new heights at last and the team’s even showing a profit . The board though are a no go cos they don’t like the idea of a woman boss. But of course why’s that going to stop her. When one night ,Campbell comes to her rescue when her car breaks down ,she finds he’s good to have around and lines are crossed ,but he has to be discreet though she’s sweet ,she is his boss….Campbell is a good man caring for his facade as much as he can . He has a good heart . She’s got to fight in this male dominated world where the males look down on her for being a female . A media circus if it got out that she was seeing a player isn’t in doubt but are they in with a shout of being happy ,or are their hands tied ? Contracts threatened ,they cannot deny. He can’t afford to lose his job ,I was guessing and the way she has been treat by the board is hard and depressing. Anne Kemp has us guessing and on tenterhooks for their fiery connection and growing affection they try to ignore but that makes them want each other more. I pure and simply adore this book . It’s hockey but so much more . The characters have great depth and are endearing and I was even tearing . All the feel for this amazing book that’s everything you want in the perfect hockey book, without nook as it’s closed door . Kisses and no more it’s brilliant and resilient and pure.
I am a huge fan of romance, especially when it comes in the form of a series. Add in the fact that I have recently become completely hooked on sports romances, particularly hockey ones, and this book was basically calling my name. Since I had already read Checking Mr. Wrong, I thought I knew exactly what I was getting into, and I was absolutely ready for it. Let’s just say it did not disappoint for a single second.
Even though this is book three in an existing series, I was thrilled that it worked so well as a standalone. I never felt lost or out of the loop, which can sometimes happen with later installments. Plus, I have recently become a big fan of age gap romances where the woman is older, so this story had me hooked from the start. The chemistry between the main characters jumped off the page, and I loved watching their connection deepen as they navigated their worlds both on and off the ice.
What I appreciated most was how natural their relationship felt. Nothing about it seemed rushed or forced, and that made their romance even more believable. It struck the perfect balance of flirty, emotional, and heartwarming. Also, without giving too much away, this book had one of the most satisfying “villain” takedowns I have read in quite a while. I was cheering out loud when it happened.
All in all, I really loved this book. It reminded me why I adore sports romances so much. The tension, the teamwork, and the swoon-worthy moments all came together in one perfect story. I cannot wait to dive into her next book because if it is anything like this one, I already know I am going to be hooked from page one.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**
Offside Secrets (River City Renegades #3) by Anne Kemp
I received a complimentary copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Offside Secrets by Anne Kemp is a charming addition to her closed-door hockey romance series. As the third book, it continues the cozy, character-focused storytelling that fans of wholesome rom-coms will appreciate. If you're looking for a clean (not spicy) romance with humor, heart, and a backdrop of hockey, this one definitely deserves a spot on your TBR—though you’ll get the most out of it by reading the first two books first. The interconnected cast makes the world feel full and familiar, and having that foundation enhances the emotional payoff in this installment.
Kemp balances romance, light comedy, and the team dynamics of the hockey world in a way that feels warm and uplifting. The main couple’s chemistry is sweet rather than steamy, making it perfect for readers who enjoy slow-burn charm over spice-heavy tension.
Pros:
Wholesome, closed-door romance that still delivers plenty of emotional connection
Fun hockey atmosphere without overwhelming non-sports readers
Likable, interconnected cast that grows on you throughout the series
Light, humorous tone with heartfelt moments
Cons:
Works best if you’ve read the first two books (you might feel a bit out of the loop otherwise)
Some predictable rom-com beats
Readers wanting more on-ice action or higher tension may find this one gentler than expected
If you love hockey romance but prefer it sweet, funny, and heartwarming rather than spicy, Offside Secrets is absolutely worth the read. This series continues to shine with its wholesome charm and lovable characters.
– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone
– this is told from Sutton & Campbell’s points of view
-there is an age gap of about 5 years between them
-it is mentioned that a character’s parent has rheumatoid arthritis & the character is their caretaker
-it is mentioned that a character flips another person off
Review:
I’d been hoping Sutton was getting a story and I’m so glad it was this one! Sutton is such a strong and in charge character and I loved that Campbell provided a listening ear to her when she needed it. I loved that Sutton not only cared about how she projected things in relation to the Renegades, but also how she could help the members of the team individually. She wasn’t someone to let other people take care of the different aspects of the team/business. I loved that Campbell tried lightening things for Sutton, even just in his offer to attend the gala with her after hearing she needed someone in order to not be heckled by the board.
I am so excited to see that our time with some of the team members of the Renegades in this book will not be ending yet! I can wait to see who will be getting their own stories in the future!
Summary:
Sutton is the boss and owner of the Renegades hockey team. She is the one putting out fires and doing her best to keep the team thriving. The one thing she really shouldn’t do is fall for one of her own hockey players, but her heart seems to have other plans…
Campbell is the team captain and sole caretaker of his father. His only focus should be on making it to the big leagues and caring for his dad. But when Campbell gets the chance to help Sutton out of a jam, he discovers that there’s something else he can’t help but pursue: loving Sutton for all that she is and giving her a space to just be. And that might just ruffle up all the other plans he’d had for his life…
This is a fun Hockey Romance and the final book in this series. I didn't read the other two books before reading this one but I was still able to understand and enjoy the story. After reading it I would definitely like to go back and read the previous books.
Sutton Mahoney is the owner of the AHL team the Renegades. She has done a wonderful job since she took over from her brother but the board of directors always seem to make her justify her actions. They would not treat a male owner the way they treat her. When there is an upcoming gala, they keep hounding her to take a man with her. When the Captain of her team Campbell Stockton overhears her discussing this with her friend, he offers to be her plus one. The sparks that fly between her and Campbell start them on a secret romance.
Campbell Stockton has been waiting for his break to go into the NHL. Now with a new team joining the league he needs to be on top of his game. They will be coming to watch their upcoming game to get a look at him and some of his teammates. Campbell's father has been battling rheumatoid arthritis. Taking care of him and keeping up his practices and games leaves him no time for a life of his own. As he and Sutton begin to meet secretly, he has no idea what they are, he tells his dad she is a situation.
Sutton and Campbell are suddenly thrown into the media's scrutiny when pictures from the gala show up online. Will the pressure make them decide to stop their growing relationship?.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I am a huge fan of a good hockey romcom, and Offside Secrets absolutely delivered. I originally discovered Anne Kemp through her collaboration on the Love in Maple Falls series, and I have quickly come to adore the humor, wit, and engaging storylines she brings to the table. This book was super cute and sweet, serving up exactly the kind of lighthearted, romantic escapism I was hoping for while tackling the high-stakes world of professional hockey.
The dynamic between Sutton, the team owner, and Campbell, the team captain, is fantastic. The forbidden workplace romance aspect adds just the right amount of pressure, but what really shines is the chemistry between them. The story balances the tension of their "off-limits" situation with an irresistible draw that pulls them together. I particularly appreciated how the narrative highlighted the importance of friendship and found family alongside the romance, as well as the refreshing take on the age gap trope.
For readers who love high tension without the explicit content, this is a winner. The sizzle is definitely there, but it remains a closed-door romance with no spice, proving you don't need it to sell the deep connection between the characters. Although this is the third book in the series, it reads perfectly well as a standalone; however, it was charming enough that I definitely want to go back and read the rest of the series immediately.
Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book, and this is my honest and unbiased review.
Offside Secrets is a sweet, tender, closed door hockey holiday romance between Renegades owner Sutton Mahoney and team Captain Campbell Stockton. Sutton is strong and independent, carrying the pressure of being a female team owner in a male dominated field. Campbell is solid, dependable, and steady - a natural leader who protects and cares for people important to him. I adored Campbell’s tenderness and protective nature. He showed up for Sutton and supported her without overstepping or undermining her abilities.
I love how this story highlighted the double standard women face in leadership. The scrutiny Sutton endures from the board simply wouldn’t have happened if she were a man. I can sympathize with the position she found herself in and the instinct to cater to their opinions but I love the way she stood her ground in the end. I thought Ann handled this topic delicately, thoughtfully, and realistically, without over doing it.
Sutton and Campbell’s romance is heartwarming and irresistibly endearing. They complement each other beautifully, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching them fight for one another when it mattered most. If you love touching, feel-good, forbidden workplace romances with lovable characters and strong friendships, be sure to put this one on your TBR.

Once again, Anne Kemp has knocked it out of the park (or the hockey equivalent) with this fun, hockey romcom. The Renegades have been so fun to get to know throughout this series, with a team that truly feels like family... and the strong and powerful women that fall for them, so I loved seeing their captain and their owner getting their much-deserved chance at love. Campbell and Sutton were so good together... amazing chemistry, yes (my goodness, that first kiss!)... but I also loved how they show up to support and try to protect each other too, even if they don't always get it right along the way. There was a lot trying to keep these two apart... and plenty of side characters trying to shake things up... only making me root for them to figure it all out and get that happily ever after. If you're looking for a good hockey romance with just the right amount of 'forbidden' vibes, this is definitely one to check out!
Offside Secrets is a closed-door romance with kisses only and minimal minor language. It is the third book in the River City Renegade series, and while those who have read the previous books will have a better understanding of team history/dynamics, I do think this could be enjoyed as a standalone as well.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
Another great book by Anne Kemp! In Offside Secrets we get to know Sutton more. I love a strong, confident, caring, boss lady as the main character. And than there is Campbell, the hockey player who is learning the ropes of success as a professional while taking care of his dad who has chronic RA. I absolutely loved the son being the care giver of parent and think this is becoming more and more of a reality. The understanding and support from players and the organization give me hope. There is a villain in Offside Secrets and Campbell and the team step in just when it is needed most. This added another layer to the novel. I had to keep reading to find out what happened.
The cast of characters from the other two books in the series are sprinkled in too, which I love it when characters re-appear. It is not in a way that you missed something if you haven't read Faking the Face Off (book 1) and Goalie Interrupted (book 2), but if you have, it is fun to see them again.
Overall (not in an particular order): Great story, team, hockey, strong boss, amazing characters, family, romance with the a little steam, caring for a parent, friendships, a bad guy, holidays, and a quick read.
Highly recommend grabbing your copy of Offside Secrets (book 2) today. Make sure to grab Faking the Face Off (book 1) and Goalie Interrupted (book 2) in the River City Renegades series.
Sutton is a female owner of a hockey team. Campbell is the captain of the hockey team. Sutton’s decisions, her perception and everything is questioned by the hockey board. If Sutton were a guy there would be no questions asked. Campbell is a quiet likeable captain liked by all. His Dad has RA and I could immediately relate to his concern for his Dad. Campbell wants to be sure that his Dad gets to the doctor, has his meds, and is physically taken care of. But Campbell also needs to focus and do his job as hockey captain. Campbell helps Sutton out one night when he finds her in the parking lot with a dead battery. Now the push pull dance begins between Sutton and Campbell. She is very concerned with her his reputation, perception and how it looks to the media. Someone from her past is out to set them up and ruin Sutton’s reputation. There is a connection between Sutton / Campbell that you want to root for them to succeed and be together. Sutton is always finding ways to avoid Campbell so that she is not impacting his ability to do his job. He is a force to be reckoned with since he wants to take care of people he cares about. He cares about Sutton, she just needs to realize that she deserves to be happy. There is humor, laughter, intrigue, family, friends everything a great story should have. It is a must read.
Things I loved - Sutton is a strong, confident woman. She is working in a male dominated field on the heels of a family scandal and moves with confidence and grace as she stands firm in her abilities and knows what she brings to the table. Even in the face of naysayers and critics, she steps up and stands tall.
Campbell hasn't had an easy road - but his priorities are straight. He's focused, determined, hard working, and takes care of the people he loves. I liked the way he showed up for his team, for his Dad, and for Sutton throughout the story.
The friendships and found family! Sutton, Anna, and Elle were honest with each other and supported each other in beautiful ways. The hockey players and coaches showed up for Campbell, too.
Things that I struggled with - the boss/employee trope - turns out, this isn't my favorite trope. I also didn't love the age gap trope when it was only a 5 year age gap and they were in their early 30s. I felt like the story could stand on its own without the age gap being added for extra conflict.
Above all, I loved how both Sutton and Campbell put each other first. They focused on their personal goals and supported each other in quiet, real life ways. They weren't afraid to stand in their strengths.
I received this title as an ARC, but all opinions are my own.
Offside Secrets ~River City Renegades #3 by Anne Kemp.
She’s the boss. He’s the captain. Falling was easy… hiding it is the hard part. Anne Kemp delivers another fantastic installment in the River City Renegades series, and Offside Secrets might just be my favorite one yet. Having read the first two books, I was already invested in this world—but Sutton and Campbell’s story pulled me in even deeper. Sutton, the team’s owner, is juggling more than enough responsibility as it is. The last thing she needs is the unwanted attention—or undeniable pull—of her team captain, Campbell. The tension between them is electric, and Kemp handles their dynamic with just the right blend of slow-burn chemistry and emotional depth. The characters feel incredibly true to life, each with their own complexities and motivations. Sutton and Campbell practically leap off the page, making it easy to root for them even as they struggle to keep their feelings under wraps. The writing is smooth, engaging, and perfectly paced, keeping me hooked from start to finish. This is a wonderful story that fits seamlessly into an already fantastic series, and I highly recommend it to all romance and sports-romance fans. If you’ve enjoyed the previous books, you’re in for a treat—if you’re new to the series, this is a great reason to start. Highly recommended.
I’m such a sucker for a good hockey romance (just ask my friends), and this third book in the River City Renegades series might just be my favorite one yet. I’m not sure why, but I connected with these characters even more deeply than in the previous books. Sutton and Campbell’s story had everything I love — tension, heart, humor, and all the feels.
It’s a closed-door hockey romcom, but the chemistry? Off the charts. I adored the workplace tension, the forbidden attraction, and those soft emotional moments that sneak up on you. It was super cute, surprisingly emotional, and full of that “I’m rooting for them so hard” energy.
Huge thanks to Anne Kemp and her publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC early. Offside Secrets hits shelves November 13th, and I can’t recommend it (or the entire River City Renegades series) enough!
So happy to be back with the River City Renegades!!
Loved loved loved Sutton and Campbells story!! The way Sutton felt like the romance was forbidden for her but Anna and Elle reminded her what she told them when they were struggling with the same questions at one point. And how she knew her worth and while sometimes it was tiring always trying to prove herself in a man’s world she didn’t back down and held her ground and Campbell did not hesitate to be behind her 100%. And she didn’t let her fears keep her from being there for Campbell when he needed it too. Helping his dad out during the biggest game he needed to play and focus on 100%.
I loved how Campbell was like immediately gone for Sutton from the moment he helped her with her car battery. There was no question how he felt about her from the get go. And Sutton feeling the same but needing a little encouragement was golden. Their kisses were AMAZING! Always love a good elevator kiss. 🤭🤭.
Anyway Anne does it again with this newest addition to the series.
