The Dungeoneers #4

Léčky, lampy, labyrinty

Rate this book

Agent Mungo z gnómské tajné služby si to nemyslí. Dokázat to je však něco úplně jiného. Naštěstí zná pár lidí, kteří by mu s tím mohli píchnout. Nebo spíš trpaslíků. Neukousli si ale Tad, Majzla a další Kobkanýři – profesionální čističi kobek a hrobek – tentokrát příliš velké sousto?

Another great fun dungeoneers adventure. It was full of fun lore, monsters, challenges, and traps that the team overcame. I laughed out loud on multiple occasions as I read and I love that Mungo played such a key role in the story. As usual there were lots of natural 20s that led to really awesome achievements and more than a few nat 1s which made for very amusing setbacks. Also it is certain anyone who has played d&d has encountered first hand most of the "adventurer" tropes that were so excellent made fun of. Highly recommend for anyone into silly table top RPG style fantasy.

The entire Dungeoneers series is what I would refer to as popcorn books. They're fun, they're light and they even manage to make me laugh once in a while. So, I feel a little funny giving the series an average of four stars, considering it's not full of beautiful dialogue, thought provoking stories, and deep characters. But then, that isn't what the series is about. For what it is, it is very good.

Each story focuses mostly on one of the characters. In this book it is Mungo, the gnome who has gone through the entire series wearing a dwarf disguise made from badly applied cat fur. No one is fooled for a moment, and up until this book they've humored him because they thought he was simply delusional.

Being this is Mungo's book, it has a spy slant to it. It gives more than a wink and a nod to James Bond, including the female gnome's name. The bad guy is suitably power mad, has crazy inventions and weird henchmen. The puns are thankfully few, and it pains me to say, one was clever enough to make me smile.

I knocked off a star because there were a couple of times when it was impossible for the character to know something involving another character yet did. I understand that sometimes during a climatic action scene it's difficult to provide information without causing everything to come to a screeching halt, but I can think of a few ways that could have been avoided in this particular instance.

Overall, "Mazerynth" was a fun ride like the rest of the series. Animal-headed gods, clever fake mummies, and an enormous con game with multiple folks conning each other, is a great way to spend an afternoon.

(No spoilers.)
Jeffery Russell has a wonderful knack of being able to write a tale that is not only highly entertaining, but also clever and witty as well. This outing from our favourite Dungeoneers is set in the desert, which of course gives great freedom for all sorts of shenanigans to unfold. We meet some delightfully dastardly villains as well as unusual entities, we discover useful (if unorthodox) ways of getting out of places, and we learn that not being a dwarf doesn't mean you're not part of the family. All the Dungeoneer stories are good natured, uplifting adventure tales that are full of heart and courage, friendship and fake beards. I wish all fantasy reads were this entertaining. More please!! Many, many more. :)

Ak máte radi hravé a dobrodružné príbehy so srdcom, humorom a jazykovými prestrelkami, nevynechajte ani tento diel!

I really love the premise and characterization and voice of these books. The digs at gaming raids and skill systems this time around were particularly delightful. And this one gave some background on Mungo! I was wondering when that would all come out.

Only thing that kept this from five stars for me was that it really felt rushed in parts, which left it feeling short (appropriate, since it is the shortest of the Dungeoneers books, according to Amazon's paging). There were places where another minor subplot or some extra conversation or an actual scene rather than a quick retelling of it later would have really left it feeling a bit more fleshed-out.

Splendid fun!

If you've ever wanted an adventuring party that was good at it's job, this series is for you. It's a great romp through fantasy that manages to hit a lot of cliches but twisting them into fresh fun things as it goes. I've loved them all so far and looking forward to more.

Another solid and creative Dungeoneers novel!

Great read! Can't wait for the next one! A little too much expression in a couple parts but overall this book was fast paced, interesting, and as always refreshing read.

Egyptian & A Thousand & One Arabian Nights

Like the other books, I definitely enjoyed the light-hearted tone of Mazernth. Durham as sidekick and scribe Ruby as a guest of a djinni were my favorite parts

It was a hippo-notic tale

Another rousing adventure for the dungeoneers. Durham is still my favourite but Mungo steals the show. Lots of puns lots of dwarves never a dull moment.

Mungo Madness!

As usual, a well-planned escapade involving my favorite band of definitely not adventurous dwarves and their one almost dwarvish member.
