It's a tough job running a magical bookshop, but someone's got to do it.
Failed seer Sibyl is confident in her ability to handle vampires, dryads, and werewolves, but the hamsters in the ceiling might be too much for her. When both a local dryad girl and Sibyl's werewolf friend go missing, hamsters are the last thing on her mind. She's prepared to shut up shop to find the missing people. The dryad's mother is a private investigator, hot on the trail of a killer. Is there a possibility that the cases are linked? And will Sibyl find the missing before it's time to open the shop for the holiday rush?

Melissa Gunn spent several years pursuing a successful science career before deciding it would be fun to write fiction as well as fact – though it turns out that there is even more research involved.

Luckily research is one of her favourite things. She enjoys combining facts that seem fantastical with actual fantasy, and creating quirky characters with a sense of humour.

When she’s not trying to figure out how a volcano demigod would problem-solve, she's feeding her backyard menagerie or taking photographs of whatever will stand still for long enough (mostly plants).

A lovely mix of things I have experienced on visits to Auckland (bad weather, vulnerability of the Harbour Bridge…) and things I have yet to experience there (werewolves, pixies, secret tunnels…). Sibyl is settling in and business is thriving in her magical bookshop and maybe she’ll have time to make some friends or maybe circumstances will force her to? I love Melissa’s observations on the effects of pollution, climate change, corruption and more from a different angle and how these and over-busy lives come into the story. I’m keen to know what happens next please.
