Murder in Darnley Glen: Detective Lola Harris Mystery, Book 6

Rate this book
A woman is found murdered in a country park. The baby she was carrying? Gone.

Detective Lola Harris is called to a murder scene on a cold October morning. The body of a young woman has been found by a dog walker in the reeds at Darnley Glen. The victim was seen just hours earlier, running through the darkness clutching a newborn.

There's no sign of a baby.

Then comes the 999 call. At 1am, a woman broke into Lawrence Dixon's home and kidnapped his ten-week-old son at gunpoint. The intruder matches the dead woman's description.

Now Lola's chasing shadows through a maze of lies, secrets and stolen lives. Who was the woman? Why did she take the child? And where is the baby now?

The clock is ticking. And the truth is more twisted than Lola ever imagined.

Lola Harris returns in book six of this series., in what is quite a convoluted murder mystery where a woman steals a baby from a couple only to then be found dead within hours and the baby having disappeared. In comes Lola and her team to investigate the murder and the disappearance of the baby, but she’s worried the couple are hiding things.

This is exactly the kind of crime fiction book I love. Great characters with some excellent interplay between them, a cracking plot line that moves along at good pace, and an investigation that is multilayered and involves good police interviews. It is these elements that make for a good investigation and book. The more I read of Daniel’s books the more he is becoming one of my favourite and go to authors, helped even more by the books being set in Scotland, which always seems to add an excellent layer to crime fiction.

There are many surprises and twists along the way in this complex plot, and we see Lola fighting those who should be helping her, and demonstrating her dogged determination that we have seen with other books in the series. As you’d expect there are times that Lola goes the extra mile and puts her very safety on the line.

A worrying twist at the end of the book and now I’m waiting impatiently for the next book in the series to see how this plays out.

I throughly recommend this book and series, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!

Murder in Darnley Glen by Daniel Sellers was a thoroughly gripping read! I genuinely didn’t realise it was the sixth book in the Detective Lola Harris series until I’d finished it, but it works perfectly as a standalone.

The story opens with a chilling scene: a woman is found dead on the south side of Glasgow, and nearby, a couple reports their baby has been kidnapped. Strangely, they’re hesitant to involve the police. When the dead woman is identified as the supposed kidnapper—but there’s no sign of the baby—Lola Harris is thrust into a case already clouded by secrets, hesitation, and obstruction from those who should be helping. As more missing women are linked to the investigation and a high-ranking police official steps in, Lola is ordered to back off—but in true detective fashion, she refuses to stop digging for the truth.

The plot is layered with lies, red tape, and personal stakes, making Lola’s journey both tense and compelling. The mystery is tightly plotted with clever twists that kept me guessing all the way through. The resolution felt satisfying, well-earned, and emotionally grounded, with the full horror revealed gradually in a way that kept me firmly on the edge of my seat.

This was a quick, engaging, and easy-to-devour read with sharp writing and a lead detective I’d happily follow again. I’ll definitely be picking up more from the Lola Harris series.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publishers for this ARC in exchange for a honest review.

I really enjoyed “Murder in Darnley Glen” by Daniel Sellers! I didn’t realize this was the sixth book in the Detective Lola Harris series until after finishing it, but it worked perfectly as a standalone.

The story took a little while to pull me in (as most mysteries do for me), but once I was a few chapters in, I couldn’t put it down. Detective Lola Harris is called to investigate the death of a woman and a missing baby, and from the very start she’s stalled and hindered at nearly every turn, even by people who should be eager to help. The deeper she digs, the more she has to navigate lies, secrets, and layers of red tape to uncover the truth.
The mystery is well-constructed and unpredictable, with twists that kept me guessing until the end. The resolution was satisfying and true to the story’s tone. It felt both earned and emotionally grounded.

It was a quick, easy, and engaging read with strong writing and a lead detective I’d love to follow again. I’ll definitely be picking up more of Lola Harris’s stories in the future.

I think this series would be a great fit for teenagers who feel a bit too old for the YA section but are just starting to explore general fiction shelves. It’s also perfect for anyone wanting to break out of a reading slump — fast-paced, easy to fall into, and endlessly entertaining.

Thanks to Daniel and NetGalley for allowing me to read Murder in Darnley Glen prior to the publication date.
I believe that this 6th book will be the last in the series which is a shame as it is an absolute page turner which can be read as a standalone book..
Like the author, I love books which are set around Glasgow and the Clyde. This one arrived in my reader as we hunkered down to wait for Storm Amy to arrive, which let me binge read.
The investigations take Lola and the team into the realms of wealthy, powerful people who have contacts in high places, and they are not slow in using them, pulling strings to block the investigation.
There is distinct shift in the Police Scotland management structure with not so veiled threats. Even Supt Elaine Walsh, who is a personal friend of Lola, has taken to avoiding her in anything but a professional capacity.
There are plenty of secrets and lies which will be revealed.
Overall, the story ventures into topical subjects relating to student visas and university funding.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review "Murder in Darnley Glen", the sixth book (and possibly the final?) in Daniel Sellers's Detective Lola Harris series. I must admit, I have not read the previous books, but that was not an impediment to my enjoyment of the mystery. And, what a mystery!
A middle-of-the-night kidnapping of a child; a woman found dead in the titular Darnley Glen, and this mystery is off and running. And then, the dead woman's resemblance to the mother of the kidnapped, and now missing, baby begins to throw up all kinds of flags in acting DCI Harris's investigation, which somehow leads her into a murky underworld where other young women have gone missing - for a time - resurfaced and then disappeared once more.
There are many roadblocks, some seemingly insurmountable, in the way of Lola's investigation and she will have to call on all of her resources to get to the bottom of it all, while at the same time dealing with a pretty big personal issue.
And the explosive ending will have you hanging on every word.

Detective Lola Harris Mystery, Book 6

Detective Lola Harris is called to a murder scene on a cold October morning. The body of a young woman has been found by a dog walker in the reeds of Darnley Glen. The victim was just seen hours earlier, running through the darkness clutching a newborn, There's no sign of the baby. Then comes a 999 call. At one am, a woman broke into Lawrence Dixon's home and kidnapped his ten-week-old son at gunpoint. The intruder matches the dead woman's description.

The pace is steady in this multilayered story. A woman is dead, the baby she had with her is missing. Then a couple report their baby as being kidnapped. Detective Lola Harris is investigating, but she's hindered rather than helped by people. She has to work out the truth from the lies, the secrets and red tape. I kept guessing until the end.

Thank you to Joffe Books, NetGalley, and Daniel Sellers for the oportunity to read the eARC of Murder in Darnley Glen, the sixth book in the DCI Lola Harris series.

DCI Harris and her team are investigating the murder of a young woman in Darnley Glen, when a witness comes forward with information that he saw the woman earlier and she was carrying a baby. Within hours a nearby couple reports a home invasion where their baby was snatched. Lola's investigation into the death and the disappearance start to raise red flags, and it becomes clear someone in power wants to pull strings.

An excellent story with lots of twists and turns. I wasn't quite sure where it was going to end up. While this may be the sixth book in the series it can easily be read as a stand alone, although I highly recomment the entire series. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

A woman is found dead on the south of Glasgow. A couple have had their baby kidnapped nearby - but are extremely reluctant to involve the police. And the dead woman is identified as the kidnapper - but there's no sign of a baby. Just the start to the day that DCI Lola Harris needed.

The case becomes even more complicated as other missing women are linked, and a very senior police officer becomes involved. Lola is told to stop investigation - but typically continues to search for the truth.

Murder In Darnley Glen is an excellently plotted novel with many layers. The truth emerges gradually as the full extent of the horror is revealed. This is one to keep the reader very much on the edge of the seat.

4* A complex murder mystery

Detective Lola is called to investigate the murder of a young woman who was earlier observed running through town with a baby in her arms. News arrives later of a baby being snatched from her parents. The mother seems strangely confused and the father refuses to speak to the police, even waiting for hours before reporting the crime.

The plot twists to the unimaginable as DCI Lola Harris heads the murder and kidnapping investigation while also facing internal police politics.

A stand-alone mystery and sadly the last of the DCI Lola Harris series - unless the author changes his mind.

With thanks to Joffe Books and Daniel Sellers for the eARC, this review is my personal, unbiased opinion.

I very much enjoyed #murderindarnleyglen by @danielsellersauthor. I've had the privilege of reading the entire Lola Harris series, and while Darnley isn't my favorite, it's still very, very good. The thing I love about Lola is that while she's sharp and empathetic, she doesn't suffer fools, nor is she perfect. Once again in trouble with her superiors, she nevertheless perseveres by trusting her judgment. This one was a real puzzler, with women and babies going missing. I was sad when I read this in the Acknowledgements that Darnley is the last Lola story, but hopefully Mr. Sellers will continue to write, esp. detective novels.

P.S. thanks to @joffebooks for the ARC.

A woman is found dead in Darnley Glen, the baby that she had been carrying nowhere to be found. A little while later, a baby is reported kidnapped. The kidnapper's description matches the deceased, but if it is her, then where is the baby?

This is exactly what I want in my mysteries. Clever, driven, and likable main character; engaging cohorts; multi-layered plot with twists; and a beautiful UK setting. I read this in less than 12 hours and I've already added the author and series to my to-buy list. Terrific read.

Well this was an explosive book! I really enjoyed the premise of this one and it felt particularly fast-paced! This is book 6 in the Lola Harris series and this follows Lola as a woman is found dead in Darnley Glen and was last seen carrying a baby! We follow the investigation from there! This is a short book but it does pack a punch! Only reason it is a slightly lower rating is just a personal preference as the chapters were just a little too long! But otherwise, what an amazing book, I would absolutely recommend this and I will be going back to this series so watch this space!

I absolutely loved this book! This is book 6 in the excellent Lola Harris series and it is a complicated, exciting and well plotted read. Lola is such a likeable, complicated and determined character and I really like her character development. The Glasgow setting is expertly described and I could imagine myself right in the south side of the city due to the author's descriptions. I can highly recommend this ever improving series to lovers of Scottish crime fiction.

The final installment in the Detective Lola Harris series, this one finished it up nicely. The strong (sometimes rogue) female MC closes another bizarre murder mystery case and brings some justice to the victims. It's a fast-paced thriller with some spectacular twists, I just wish there was a bit more setting description in the last book like the previous books. Overall, a good end for a enthralling police thriller series. Sidenote - love the cover art.

This is the sixth book in the series featuring Detective Inspector Lola Harris, but it reads very well as a standalone novel.

It deals with a complex story of foreign students, immigrants who may be coerced, surrogacy and cyber and other crimes.

Set in Glasgow and its surroundings, it is suspenseful and contains narrative twists.

Interesting and well written despite its challenging themes.

This was a new author to me and I chose the book because I grew up near the area in which the book is set. I quickly worked out the likely theme but was pleased that there were a few curve balls. Didn’t know that this is the final book in the series. I will look for the others and get the whole story. Well written, likeable characters and good pacing.

This book was fast paced and puzzling from the very first page. Every time I thought I had it figured out, there was a new twists or turn. The entire Lola series has been top notch from the very first book. The author has shared that this will be the last book in the series. I will miss the talented and tenacious Lola in her quest to solve complicated crimes.
