The Slums – Episode Two
Three women. One hood. Sink or swim.

In the Slums, yesterday’s secrets don’t stay buried for long—they come back deadlier than before.

Love turns poisonous. Loyalty flips. And betrayal? Sometimes it’s the only way out. In the hood, it’s a dog-eat-dog world—and one wrong move could cost you everything.

One woman’s demons force her to face the blood on her hands. Another grinds harder than ever, until the hustle eats her alive. And the last is fighting to hold her family together while the people closest to her rip it apart.

They thought surviving the first storm was enough… but this time, the storm is them. And in a place where snakes smile and bullets don’t carry names, the question ain’t who makes it out—it’s who’s left standing when the smoke clears.

The Episode Two proves there’s no handouts in the jungle—and sometimes the only way to survive is to stay outta sight and outta mind.

Ready to press play on episode 3!

I’m officially renaming Kutura B. to Kutura C. and the C stands for cliffhanger! If she does nothing else, she’s going to leave us clutching our pearls wanting more and in episode two, she did JUST THAT!

I couldn’t have asked for a better continuation from episode one. I literally lost count of the jaw dropping, wtf, did I read what I thought I just read moments. Everyone has secrets, no one can be trusted and Kutura is slowly revealing the deception. If you thought episode one delivered, you haven’t seen nothing yet! One thing for sure as we dove into the grimy world of Tasha, Mik & Dreka, is that episode three is going to come out the gate swinging, with all gas and no brakes. This story gets messy and messier by the episode and I’m ready to hit play on episode three.

Give me Episode 3 NEOWWWW!!

I had the pleasure of reading this as an ARC and I thank my girl Kutura B for it.

Episode 2 picked right up where 1 left off and Kutura B did not disappoint AT ALL!!! The Slums loves no one and the ladies are still trifling and trying to find their next come up. But is there really away out of The Slums? Something always pulling them back and keeping them stagnant.
Tasha finally made it out the hood but her insecurities keep her a s s in a chokehold. Like girl you got Coogi. What’s ya damn problem. He fine. It’s always gonna be Heaux sniffing around. Play ya part and sit tf pretty.
Mikki lost them kids and went down hill from there. This Heaux so trifling and a big mess!! Little Hot cat can’t catch a break.
I slick kinda found myself feeling sorry for Dreka cause she just can’t never stir clear of being in the middle of shit. Pregnant and all right smack in the damn middle. She can’t even do her bid in peace.
Annnnnnd the CLIFFHANGER!!! Who got shot?? Who is Deuce daddy?? Who’s at the hospital knocking at death’s door? And who tf did Mikki dirty like that?? Episode 3 gonna be too good.

📖The Slums Episode One and Two … The Ghetto Soap Opera!
And …. We are back with another season on The (messy😝) Slums. I am SO mad I didn’t write about The Slums Season One and Two! Side note: the author Kutura names the book episodes not seasons, but chile the way the books be booking… they are seasons to me! When I say those two books are the reason why I am here for book three… ready … it’s crazy! Ima give a little about what I remember in the prior
“seasons” so we are not just jumping RIGHT into season three.
Soooo… Welcome to The Slums 🤗 you MIGHT want to visit but baby you do NOT want to live here lol.
So we have Mikki and Tasha two sisters trying to make shit shake. Remember this is season one and two so I’m taking us back. They are thick as thieves and ten toes about each other. Tasha is the oldest out of the two. She has three kids, one boy Jah, who plays his little part FOR SURE in all the books, plus two little girls. Mikki has two kids of her own, a boy and girl. They are living but know that it could be better. Tasha has a NO good as boyfriend, Shad. He gives Tasha pure HELL and doesn’t give a fuck about the kids EXCEPT for the one he fathered and that was ONLY sometimes. Tasha finally comes to her senses and cheats up lol … yes you heard right! Started cheating with her ex boo, Coogi, and baby he does her RIGHT. She ends up with his ass and like The Jeffersons from season one to season two Tasha moves on UP in life! 😩😝 curtesy of Coogi! It’s a beautiful thing. Tasha always knew she was worth more and when we get into season THREE you will see the bougie baby she is.
Then there is Mikki.. again we are in the past so … my girl is the SHIT. Even raising two kids on her own she is doing the damn thing and has heads turning in the slums to be her man! She decides to start dealing with Butta. Sounds and seems good because Butta got money and will trick on her. However, with money comes problems and other females. It seems like she is forever fighting for this nigga at least in season one. Now season two… that’s when things CHANGE for real for my girl. Butta gets caught up and ends up in jail and that wouldn’t be a problem if Mikki was not living with the nigga. She gets kicked out of Tasha house because she holding Butta down TOO much. The holding down had her putting Tasha and her kids in a bad spot and she had to go!So now she living with Butta, who is a mess and when he end up in jail my girl goes in a downward spiral. Her kids end in the system, she ends up dabbling in drugs and baby she just goes DOWN. Though she is down bad, in season two she still does have Jah, and a couple of her “boos” that will hold her down, but eventually she burns bridges with them too.
Now let’s not forget about Dreka hoe ass. Sike, let me not call the girl a hoe, but she sure is something. Okay so we still recapping season one and two so we have to take it back. Like I said earlier, one overall word to describe Dreka ass… idk, BUT I can give you a couple words, hustler, theif, loyal, disloyal, delusional, and conniving. Don’t have too many great words for her. You will either love or hate Dreka and I chose the latter. Not full blown hate but a great dislike. Okay, so Dreka and her trani bestie, Daf are a duo for sure. Now one person Dreka is loyal to is Daf outside of that hump. Well Butta too, but we’ll get into that later. For now, we meet Dreka as a hustling doormat for Butta. She is also into so much. She is caught up with being an informant, and it leads to her demise for a minute. Her and Mikki have an on going beef because of Butta, and it just spirals. It started with Dreka being jealous of Mikki, to her just hating her ass. Dreka also ends up in jail pregnant. She has NO idea who the father is but has some ideas of who the baby daddy could be. Can you believe Jah is one of the prospects to be the baby daddy. It’s sick not just because Jah is a teenager, around 17, but still underage, but because at one point Tasha and her were friends. Dreka is just a mess. Anywho, that ass ends up in jail and it was NOT a pleasant experience, though as you get to know Dreka you learn she always has will cause she makes a way.
Between Dreka, Mikki and Tasha I don’t know who tf is worse. Walk yes I do, the order just changes depending on the season lls. So we come to the end of season two with Tasha being ambushed, Mikki on the brink of death and Dreka possibly facing the worst tragedy yet. On to the third season of the best ghetto soap opera.

The Slum Loves NO One!!!

The Slums don’t love anyone! Lies, disloyalty, secrets and gossip lives within the slums. There’s no friend or love. Everyone knows everyone’s business and their darkness secrets! Let’s chat!!!

Tasha, she slightly made it out. Meaning my girl moved out of the Slums but they it still resided in her🫣. One thing about Tasha, she knows where she come from and prayed she never have to go back. My girl has a secret and when that secret has to be revealed, I was left speechless but her man Coogi was hot🫣! Now I honestly have to say he has every right to be as she was wrong! However though she didn’t reside in the Slums, it was still her life as her man Coogi loved that life. Tasha was that mom that made sure her kids had before her🥰. So when her son Jah became disrespectful after his tragedy, she did what was best and let go.😔 Cause once he disrespected her for the last time, she gave him what he deserved. She better than me cause me and mine would’ve been at it like no other! Being a mother myself it’s hard to let go of your kids when you’ve learned they live that life that you didn’t want for him as you never want to receive that call😭! One thing I will say, she has not an issue with getting active when her man was too🫣. With dealing with things at the home front, she learns about her sister. With being the only family she has left besides her children, she let her go and though she says for good, I don’t believe that’s true. Now with everything in shambles and an unexpected visit, I’m not know where things will end up. Needing that update soon.

Coogi, he just that 🥷🏽 to me. I do hope editing works out. At this moment I feel his love for Tasha is really. Especially after the information she provided him🥰! Despite her keeping a secret from him, he still stood 10 toes down for his family. Let’s not forget he wanted to make sure all the kids had his last name🥰! With jealousy lurking and things happening with his funds, ya boy got caught up and I’m not happy. Need to know what’s going on with him as I’m liking him and his energy.

Mikki, just a lost cause. Evening happening to her is a domino effect. My girl can’t win for losing, but her habit was becoming her down fallen. Then how she treated her kids had me mad 😡! Like girl really! Then the way she walking around foul was an embarrassment to herself and those close to her. It’s like my girl is not leaving her lessons about nothing🫣. You would think that she would get herself together especially after losing your children. Like are you really about to let the next raise your children😒. As for her baby daddy Ziggy, I just don’t like him. Like I get you over her cause she left you when down but to flaunt the next female in her face and act out in front of y’all kids😳 is just rude! Then the secret Butta holding over her head left me speechless. Like I know you lying 😡! Not just that, to find out who she been creeping with let me speechless. Like girl you playing with fire. Hope she’s able to redeem herself and amend her & Tasha relationship.

Dreka, I just don’t like her grimy self. She has one true friend -Daf and I wonder how long that’s going to last🫣! Like she just not going to learn🤔. You went down to do time thinking you snitching on the next but got herself caught up. Then you get out on the same mind set and behind the same person the help put you down in the first place🫣! Like girl when will you learn. Not only that you pregnant and I honestly don’t think she knows who the baby daddy is! With everyone knowing how grimy she is, the worst has just happened and I’m needing to know the outcome! Like the way read ended had me at the edge of my seat! My heart hurts if the story stays true to how it ended😔😭!

There’s so many to tap into with this read - Jah, Rico, Butta, Swoop and Daf! Speaking of Daf, I love him/her down. She played no games and was a friend Dreka. I would love more about her and if ends up airing out everyone secrets🫣! This read was the truth on what goes on in the slums/hood. No one is safe nor is their business. With everything hitting the fan, I’m needing to know who will remain standing🤔. The way things are going no one will be standing once all said and done

adventurous dark funny sad tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes
When I finished episode one, I was itching to get my hands on episode two. These characters stressed me out in the first installment, and even moreso this time around.

These people firmly believe in a piece of man is better than no man, they have no loyalty, no discernment or willfully ignore it, they are selfish, they expect other people to tell them things they themselves are fully aware off, and refuse to hold themselves accountable for their actions and inactions!

And yet I can't seem to get enough of them!

This read is a T-I-M-E! It has the drama, it has the complexities of life, and still I had to side eye them. I just couldn't put this read down, having to know in which new way these people would have me side-eyeing them.

Ma'am, I can't wait to see what will be next!

My girl ATE and left no crumbs per usual 😭 The Slums Volume 2 is the second installment in a series where nobody is safe—side characters included. Tysm to Kutura B. for the advanced copy!

Our (not so) faves are back with straight, absolute FOOLISHNESS. You would think they learned, but the fire still ain’t burned them enough obviously. Volume 2 of the Slums picks up right where volume 1 left off—Tasha picked up out the hood like Cinderella, Mikki living in Tasha’s old apartment and her kids in foster care, and Dreka pregnant and in jail. And baby, it don’t get NO better. (Read ya author’s notes)
Tasha, Dreka & Mikki take the cake for worse, worser, and WORST—in. that. order!!!!

Now I won’t say TOO much, you read & find out yourself October 6th 😉, but some people definitely make situations worse for themselves.. AND I THOUGHT WE GOT RID OF SHAD! 🙄 AND AND AND THE ENDING?! Ms. B lovessss leaving us on a cliffhanger 😭 so if you’re looking for closure, wait until book 3 bookies 🤩

Karma Comes full force

I am lost for words with this one. When I say, I cannot believe Dreka turned on Tash as if she did something to her. The audacity! Now nikki this girl is gone straight, crazy strong out, don’t forgot all about her kids, and got the audacity the nerves to be sleeping with everyone in the same circle, but thinks your baby daddy is supposed to want you! Ja knows he is wrong for how he’s treating his mom and I get it that he is upset and acting out but your mom has had your back from day one. He also out there moving reckless sleeping with all these different girls with his friend Rico, as if they both have no freaking home training And let me just say this book right here just got real because Coogee has gotten into something and the nasty CO Tony he has done the most. I can’t wait for book 3 Kutura B you got me so on edge right now. Love this book. Great read.

Dreka, Tasha, and Mikki

First off, Shad is exactly the type of man you stay far away from down low and messy. Well, I guess he’s not so down low anymore! I don’t even know where to begin with this story. Tasha clearly doesn’t recognize a good man when he’s right in front of her. Dreka… whew! I cannot wait to find out who that baby’s father is, because the way things were going on that block, it could be anybody. And Mikki at this point, I’m not even sure what she’s searching for anymore. What makes this story hit so hard is how real it feels. Growing up in the hood, I’ve known a Dreka, a Mikki, and a Tasha in real life. Kutura B, you’ve done it again now bring on Book 3!

I had the honor of ARC reading this book but it was soooo good I had to run it back and read again when it dropped on KU

I promise that heading is not an exaggeration!

This is a series that appears to be getting better with each book and I’m absolutely loving it!
——

Plot/storyline: three women who navigate their lives from the lens of “ghetto living”.
Drama: EXTRA AF. A lot of moving parts and players but interconnected so well.

——

This book reads so well. The perfect follow up to book 1.

Newsflash, book 2 ends on a cliffhanger

Even knowing that, it is still worth that angst and pain of reading now and waiting for the next.

Now, let’s code switch the review tone:
Putting on my glasses for a more professional approach 🤓🤓🤓
⬇️
——

“pen game 🔏✅” moment:

The writing and story telling, amazing.

For me, there is a subtle difference between the two.

The author’s ability to write a complex story on three different women ALONG WITH the substories of the people in their orbit- AMAZING.

To do all of that while remaining cohesive, special!

Not to mention incorporating humor and life lessons and parables throughout…

_____

This is an ongoing series but well worth diving into now!

🔥 This one right here? Straight grit, raw emotion, and street realism at its finest.🔥

Kutura B. doesn’t just tell a story—she drags you by the collar straight into the heart of the block. The Slums: Episode Two feels like a cinematic ride through a world where loyalty gets tested, love’s a risk, and survival’s the only language that matters. The writing hits with that same intensity as a late-night cypher—sharp, unfiltered, and unapologetically real.
If you’re a fan of street lit with soul, characters who feel like people you grew up around, and tension so thick it could cut glass—this series is your next obsession. By the end of this book, I was like 😮🫢😳🤯

soooo hood and soooo good

This book is hood, but in the best way possible. It really took me back to the kind of street novels we used to read back in the day. A lot of books now feel overly romanticized with perfect endings, but this series keeps it real. There are no perfect endings in the projects, and the author didn’t try to sugarcoat that.

The storytelling, the characters, the drama — everything felt raw and authentic. You can tell the author really did her thing with this series. If you love true urban fiction that keeps it real from beginning to end, this is definitely a must-read.

Scandalous, addictive, and full of drama!

I thought Part One took me through it… Part Two? LISTEN… it took everything to a whole new level! I was strung out, on edge, and couldn’t catch a break. Betrayal, deceit, snakes everywhere, and chaos hitting when you least expect it. This ride was raw, intense, and gut-wrenching, every chapter slammed harder than the last, and the ending? Had me screaming out loud! At this point, I am concerned if any of them will make it out! Part two wrecked me something bad!

I just want to start with Mikki she’s so darn trifling because why would you carry on knowing you’re rotting. Coogi seems to be so good for Tasha hopefully they can get it together! It’s gonna be a mess if Jan’s that’s grimy lady’s bd. 🫣 Dreka is the type you steer clear of ain’t nothing good about her or that Mikki. It’s so much going on but man it’s hilarious and written like the author really lived through all of this. 💀 The Slums is slumming I’m tryna press play on episode 3 but I know I have to wait!! 😭

Back in the slums where nothing ain’t nice! 👀 We catch up with our girls and their drama that just keeps spiraling out of control. Katura did not come to play she gave us even more characters to hate and plenty of mess to love! 😮‍💨🔥But that ENDING?! I was so shocked I had to reread it a few times to make sure I saw what I saw! My mouth was wide open I’m still in shock! 😳💀

I need Episode 3 expeditiously! 📚💥

This book is raw!!

Kutura B has outdone herself. Episode 2 is exceptionally raw. I spent the entire night reading this book, driven by a need to discover what would unfold. I deeply desired a happy ending for Tasha and Mikki, but such resolutions are uncommon in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Episode 2 elicited intense emotions due to its surprising developments and cliffhangers, which only intensified my desire for more. I am eagerly anticipating the next episode.

Wow! Cliffhangers go CRAZY! I LOVE how KuTura is NOT afraid to push the envelope (even though I HOPE that's not Jah baby)! This book was hilarious while being real.

I couldn't put it down! I'm hoping for the best for Tasha and Coogi! He seems like a real one and Tasha has grown so much! I need Dreka to get hers expeditiously! She's messy, nasty, and can't be trusted. She don't even deserve Daf 👏🏽 Can't wait for Part 3

This is just like real life. These 3 ladies are the slums. Some are bonded by blood but they are all bonded by living in the slums. Tasha, Mikki and Dreka are all a hot ghetto mess in their own way. Tasha got a down low baby daddy, Mikki out here passing out STDs while she should be concerned with getting her kids back and Dreka having a baby outside and don't know who her baby daddy is. This book is a page turner and will have you saying I know you lying multiple times

Wow

This right here!

This book has me screaming laughing, in tears, and cussing all at the same time.

Mikka deserves every foul thing that happens to her fishy tail

Tasha was about to do the real hood dumb chick move. I’m glad the cop stopped her. I was hoping they got away

Dreka I don’t feel sorry for at all! Just sad if the baby was shot

I’m ready for the next! This is why I don’t read books with a series unless it’s completed

Welcome back to the DRAMA! Baby it’s so much going on in this episode. Ma’am how did you manage to make this book equally as good as book 1. Usually the follow up books are ok but this was even better. Lord I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Please get Mikki some help for that swamp water lmao! That’s it…that’s my only request.

I stayed on the edge of my seat the whole time. I'm always down for a good ride through the Slums. If it wasn't for bad luck Tasha, Mikki and Dreka wouldn't have any luck at all. The story picks up exactly were it left off. All I can say is " Secure your lace front" you're about to go on a ghetto ride.

If you don’t have your hands on this one right here you are missing out. Real, raw, ghetto and soooo juicy! If that’s what you like don’t walk and get it run! Miki is worse than we left her in Episode 1. Dreka done dug a grave she is struggling to get out of. While Tasha is living the dream, or maybe not. Kutura B. did not come to play and her catalog has added another banger!
