The Oathbound Devil

Rate this book
The Oathbound Devil is the conclusion to The Soul Mirror Duet that began with The Pactbound Angel.

Neither meticulous training nor the walls of a carefully-constructed façade could have prepared him for her.

Infernal-blooded Ramiren Oresti’s past continues to haunt him. To escape, for four decades, he has traveled across nations and even worlds to provide his services as a binder of contracts and pactmaker. And he has done so alone.

He even convinced himself he preferred it that way. It's safer to not get attached.

Yet one fateful trip to a Fey Carnival threw his world into chaos. Nothing has gone according to plan since, and that includes the celestial protector now bound to him.

They are both marked by the arch-devil Vrakus, and Ramiren isn’t entirely sure he understands why.

When old enemies show their faces outside of Camlynn’s gates, Ramiren and Nathalia must work together to overcome an existential threat that could break Laeth in two.

But what about Vrakus?

It has been a month their escape from Wistran and the Feylands. Surely, he’s forgotten all about their agreement and won’t come to collect.

Right?

The Oathbound Devil contains depictions of violence/adult situations and is therefore recommended for adult readers.

Sarah spent her early years hating to read and write, until she discovered the fantasy genre.

She is now a writer by night, staring blurry-eyed at her computer at 3am quite often. She received her M.A. in Creative Writing at Eastern Illinois University. In her spare time (ha!), she gardens quite badly, plays with her dog Leia, and watches too many movies.

She writes epic fantasy (under Sarah J. Brown) and romantasy (under S.J. Brown).

4.5/5

This book confused the heck out of me. Complete change in pov shift. It was written from Ramirin's pov and was his story mostly. Some of the confusion came from the soul mirror storyline. I dont think it was as thought out or explained well enough. Anyways, besides that, I very much enjoyed the story. Im pleasantly surprised with this being a duet. The author wrapped things up nicely, but I do think there could be more. Maybe with a different character. There are so many great moments with this book and between Nathalia and Ramirin!! I adore them as a couple and they work together so well. This author is added to my read anything they write list.

This book completely consumed me—in the best possible way. From the first chapter, The Oathbound Devil sets a tone that is dark, intense, and impossible to ignore, and I was all in almost immediately.

What stood out to me most was the atmosphere. There’s a heaviness to the story that feels deliberate and immersive, like you’re constantly standing on the edge of something dangerous. It’s the kind of book where even the quieter moments feel loaded with tension, and I found myself holding my breath more than once.

The characters were a huge highlight for me. Flawed, layered, and emotionally complex, they don’t make easy choices—and that’s exactly what made them so compelling. I especially appreciated how the relationships developed under pressure rather than convenience. Nothing felt simple or handed to the reader, which made every interaction feel meaningful.

The romance (and tension surrounding it) was addictive. It has that push-and-pull dynamic I love, where trust is fragile and every moment feels like it could tip everything over the edge. I was fully invested in how things unfolded, even when it hurt a little to watch.

There’s also a strong sense of stakes throughout the entire story. It never lets you get too comfortable, and I honestly loved that. The unpredictability kept me turning pages far later than I intended.

I beta read this, and I am, once again, not okay.

I loved this book. Like fully locked in, cannot look away, thinking about it long after I finished loved it.

The momentum in this is insane. Every time I thought I could catch my breath, something else hit and pulled me right back under. It just does not let you go, in the best way.

What really got me though was the characters. Seeing everything from his side didn’t take anything away from book one. It made it hurt more. It added layers to moments I already cared about and somehow made them hit even harder.

There were scenes in this that genuinely wrecked me. I’m talking tears, staring at the page, needing a second before continuing. The emotional fallout? Brutal. In the best way.

And their bond? Still everything. It feels intense, consuming, and most importantly, chosen. Over and over again, even when it costs them. That’s what makes it land.

Nothing about this felt empty. The stakes mattered. The choices mattered. The consequences actually stuck, which made everything feel heavier and more real.

This book had me stressed, devastated, hopeful, and soft all at the same time, which is honestly my favorite kind of reading experience.

I finished this feeling completely satisfied with where their story went, but also not ready to leave this world at all. I would absolutely read more set here in a heartbeat.

Thank you to The Nerd Fam and the author for the opportunity to read this as an ARC.

4.5⭐️ While I enjoyed this book, I found it confusing at times when it came to the soul mirror and things surrounding it. I also felt.at times, aspects of this book was rushed however reading the epilogue and figuring out book 1 is written by Natalia and this book is written by Ramiren is a fun added fact that doesn't spoil what happens in the book. I look forward to what is next to come in this universe. Maybe more on Raewyn... This was a beautiful way to end this duet.

Book two is amazing. Some of the characters from the first book don't feature much in this book, however, you get to know Nathalia's family a lot more.
For the record her little sister Tilla is my favorite she is a scrapper and I'm sure a deadly one at that.
So much weaving of the storyline in this book it was brilliant and captivating.
Recommend this book and the first one so much. Fantastic fantasy story.

I think this was a beautiful ending to an amazing story. This series is definitely different than most fantasy books I read, but I fell in love with the characters from the start of book one and have been looking forward to this book for a while. The only thing I really have to say is that I was expecting maybe more of an epic “fight” scene at the end, I just felt it was a little rushed. Overall, this was a great series and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants that high fantasy world with an interesting spicy twist.

This was an amazing read that grabbed me and kept me reading until the last page. I could not put it down. No matter what I needed to do, I was hooked. The pace is perfect of the story is perfect for the flow of the story. The characters are amazing and no matter what happens you feel a connection with them. This book needs to be read, no doubt about it.
