His credits run the gamut from Superman to Star Wars to Scooby-Doo, and from Clive Barker’s Hellraiser to Looney Tunes. His comics for kids have won a Comics Buyer’s Guide Fan Award, and been nominated for an Eisner Award and two Diamond gem awards, while several of his stories for older readers were included in the #1 New York Times bestselling graphic novels Action Comics.
Time for more Teen Titans Go! Hijinks. Featuring Beast Boy, Robin, Cyborg, Starfire, and Raven, this collection contains early issues of the monthly comic from DC and is based on the controversial cartoon series of the same. (Don’t worry- there’s nothing offensive or dirty with TTG. It’s just that some fans think the silliness of the show is unforgivable and wish the series was more like the more serious Teen Titans cartoon of the early 2000s.) I for one love the show. But I admit, it’s gets a little off the wall. Especially when they sing. Nevertheless, Beast Boy is my spirit animal and I wish I was as chill as him. In this volume, there are laughs aplenty as: The Titans learn the dangers of growing a moustache. Robin becomes a teen idol to impress Starfire. Raven attends her family reunion in the deepest pits of Hades. And the team fight to the death- for the last slice of pizza. Scooby-Doo Team-Up’s Sholly Fisch crafts these stories. I have said it once and I will say it again- if Fisch was the writer on the show, it would not have so many haters. He’s that good and super talented when it comes to all-aged materials. Other stories are by Amy Wolfram and Merrill Hagan. Those are not bad but they tend to fall into the very silly trap that has cause some fans to no longer watch TTG. The artwork was picture perfect. Ben Bates (Scribblenauts) and Lea Hernandez (Killer Princesses) do an amazing job of making the entire cast of characters look just like they do on the show. Plus, they seamlessly craft characters that have never been on before, like Wonder Woman, to look as they might if they ever were to guest star on Teen Titans Go. Sometimes silly. Often hilarious and very entertaining, this volume was a great read for when you don’t want a serious comic. Kids will delight while older fans would be mixed about this. I for one enjoyed it quite a bit.
I was happy to see that there would be another bundling of this series. I am still watching the show, and loving it, so I was eagerly waiting for this comic bundle to come out.
Well, I have to say this one was not as good as the previous one. Why? Well the art. It just seemed like someone just threw some stuff together in Paint at times. :| And that is such a darn shame, as this is a graphic novel and it does rely on graphics quite a lot. It is just a shame they didn't put more effort in it, or at least it seemed so. Sure, this comic moves around quite a lot, but that is still no reason to just make the art seem fast and hurried as well.
The stories were fun though, and I was happy to see the characters again in this format. They are really the same as in the TV-shows which is a delight. Sometimes different media have characters have different personalities, so I am happy when things are the same throughout things. Yep, Robin is still annoying as hell (then again, not hearing his voice is a relief). Starfire is still oblivious to everything. Raven is still awesome (especially when she shows different sides to who she is). Cyborg and Beast Boy, well they are still the same rambunctious duo.
We got stories ranging from a slumber girl party to playing a game so much that they don't even notice their tower is practically gone. :D I really laughed a lot at all the antics.
All in all, the comic is a lot of fun, though I do hope they will up the art and make that one better.
Now, when I say this volume picks up where the previous installment leaves off, what I actually mean to say is that if you're looking for the same madcap, irreverent, jokey nature found in the first volume then look no further.
The only flaw I have with this volume, which is why it's a 3/5 and not a 4/5, is that it seems to rely a little too much on the idea of story one-off's. I love episodic adventures with only the occasional hint at a greater continuity, but when you have one story end with all but one character dying in a pizza-driven battle, Starfire beating a host of princesses (including Wonder Woman and Raven) in combat, followed by the literal end of existence due to timey-wimey, anti-matter reasons...it starts to feel...a bit too much. I don't mind minimal continuity between stories, but there's a world of difference between ending episodes on a "look, Robin didn't get a date with Starfire!" and "look, the world no longer exists!"
That said, I'll definitely keep reading subsequent volumes and if you love the show then you'll definitely enjoy the comic!
I've been in a weird reading mood where I'm just trying to keep up with my ARCs and it's tricky to hold my attention with a buddy read. I just needed some time for myself and chose an easy comic I knew I'd enjoy. I'm a longtime Teen Titans fan and these comics are too cute to boot. I liked this installment and the constant barrage of jokes. My favorites were the blind jokes, Pizza Dome, and the cable chronicles. I love these kooky kids and will continue to pick up this series when I need something fun. The cover is also so much fun and really conveys the mood of the series. Titans Go!
If you like the show, you'll like the comics although they aren't quite as fun to read as they are to watch. Or maybe it's that I'm more critical of the book. I'm willing to forgive the bad episode for the good on TV.
Another fun Teen Titans Go collection where the stories are shorter than the episodes.
This one is a bit goofier - especially Robin trying to stop Starfire from going on a date. But if you're a fan of the show you'll probably enjoy this humor.
Quirky and fun. The whole volume is a bunch of individual shorts; some are better than others. My kid loves the show so these work for us. And while I find the show okay in small doses I found this volume quite cute and funny.
