Yoshihiro Togashi (冨樫義博) is a manga artist. Credited in Chinese translations as Fu Jian Yi Bo.
He began drawing manga at an early age; while he attended college, the publisher Shueisha recognized his talent. Togashi has authored numerous manga series in different genres during the past three decades. He is perhaps best known for writing and illustrating the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter series, both of which have been published in the popular Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.
Loved this volume because Yusuke and Karama get to shine, and those are my boys!
THis is mostly a 2 verse 5 fight here. With three of the team members out of the fight, Yusuke and Karama have to face everyone. The fights get brutal as Karama tries his best to win and gets tricked at one point, leading him down a dangerous path. On flipside Yusuke is fired up but he won't be able to win his own matches as easy as he hoped either.
This is a really fun volume. Lots of great fights, emotional moments with Yusuke getting pissed, and lots of fun ways to win. Tournaments can be tedious or boring but Yu Yu Hakusho makes them a ton of fun and while the stakes aren't TOO high they keep them interesting.
Well Into the dark tournament the team is getting shafted big time.
We get a look at the unfairness and the true muddling’s of this game. It shows how money and power can influence the rules and even change them for a difference outcome. ( It drives me crazy! But it makes the story all the more fun)
Aging the art work has improved; with each volume it just keeps steeping up and looks more like the anime then in the beginning.
I like how Hiei and Kurama are drawn in the manga, more so then in the anime, I can’t quite pin point why, don’t worry I’m working on it.
Again the fighting is drawn beautifully, skillfully, and everything moves at a fast, yet steady pace.
I'm loving the manga, with each one I read I get more and more excited! If you want a great story with lots of fighting and paranormal goodness, give this manga a shot. Because remember, reading is reading, no matter what form it comes in.
These fights were weird, because the buildup to the opponents would be too much, and after one hit, an oppenent would come out and say, I can't do this.
It's weird, but this was a really fast-paced volume
Pretty good volume. Kuwabara remains my favorite character. Seeing where he is now, as opposed to where he started is heartwarming. Otherwise, the Dark Tournament continues to be solid shonen storytelling. Action and art have progressively improved.
Este es de esos tomos que me hicieron llorar con solo el principio! Kurama sigue demostrando ser el mejor, pero el compañerismo que se muestra cuando parece que su batalla está perdida me encantó. Lástima que el tomo termina en un momento decisivo...
One of my big reading goals for the new year is to read a bunch of my childhood favorite manga for the first time in nearly 20 years to relive the nostalgia and see how they hold up. First up is Yu Yu Hakusho!
Yusuke Urameshi is a hardass teen delinquent that loves skipping classes, smoking cigarettes, disrespecting authority and throwing hands with the toughest gangs in the halls and on the streets. He’s hated by almost everyone around him and he knows it. When he’s killed after pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car, he’s surprised to find from the afterlife that he has more people that love him than he ever realized after attending his own funeral as a ghost.
Against all odds, Yusuke makes a deal with the angel of death to turn his deviant behavior around in exchange for giving him another chance at life with his friends. He must prove himself that he’s worthy of being brought back to life by becoming a spirit detective, saving the lost souls of sorrowful ghosts one good deed at a time.
The spirit world is more complex than Yusuke realizes, however. He’s soon wrapped up in a world of cutthroat demons, evil spirits and other dark beings that have a bone to pick with him. While performing good deeds to save the living and the dead, Yusuke also finds the chance to put his supernaturally-enhanced martial arts abilities to use by fighting powerful paranormal foes from underworld societies.

Yu Yu Hakusho is extremely nostalgic and has a lot of appealing factors. The hilarious banter between Yusuke and his band of badass bros is the forefront of the series. Kuwabara is a lovable goofball who tries to mimic the tough guy antics of Yusuke while constantly revealing himself to be a huge softy with a heart bigger than his fake ego. Hiei is the classic edgy antihero that softens up and becomes gradually more sympathetic as you learn more about his tough upbringing. Kurama is pure class and elegance, his wits and tongue are as sharp as his looks. Then there’s the sassy, beautiful and hilarious Botan who acts as the grim reaper and leading lady. Quite the memorable crew.
Another great thing about the series that may seem odd to point out is the beautifully drawn 80’s inspired fashion. The characters change outfits almost every chapter and they always look clean and refined. It’s hard not to appreciate the style throughout the series. This coupled with the witty banter, crazy martial art demon fights, self-aware humor and fast paced story arcs with lots of action make it a pretty fun series.
While the series is simple and enjoyable, the story, world and villains aren’t that well made in my opinion. Everything seems made up on the fly with little logic or build up. The story and battle arcs get very repetitive and the second half of the series feels like a massive rehashing of everything we’ve already seen. The final arc and ending were unsatisfying and anticlimactic in my opinion. It introduced a bunch of new concepts out of nowhere and then did absolutely nothing with them. Then the series ends with a big cliffhanger with no real resolution.
Overall, I actually enjoyed the calm and relaxed chapters and subplots where it focuses on the main cast of characters bonding and hanging out with each other over the main plot, the battle arcs and the forgettable second half. I think the first arc of the story where it’s just Yusuke and Botan solving mysteries and saving the lives of lost souls was actually the best part of the entire series. The constant focus on battling mundane villains, training arcs and tournament arcs took away from the otherwise lovable group of protagonists.
Not as good as I remember from my childhood, but a fun and engaging series overall that’s easy to read and can lift your spirits when you’re feeling down.

To say this volume was fast paced is an understatement. This volume packs five different fights into just nine chapters. A couple fights last a single chapter. But each fight is entertaining and unique. It's almost a shame we get such a short amount of time with each of these opponents.
Conversely, we get the most extended amount of time with Kurama yet. His style is much more intellectual than his teammates', which makes his fights more interesting than just watching two combatants whale on each other until someone pulls out a super move.
The middle chapter has a different art style than all the rest. It was very jarring to see the new character in the subsequent chapter. The regular artwork felt almost cartoonish in comparison to that one more realistic chapter. But I'm glad the regular style is less serious and dramatic, since it retains some of the charm from earlier in the series.
The preview text for the next volume actually removes the drama from the ending of this volume, if you were somehow in doubt that .
I like the succinct nature of the fights in this story arc of Yu Yu Hakusho. Where other shonen manga drag out each fight across multiple chapters, it's refreshing to see battles contained to a single chapter and still manage to tell an engaging story with unique characters.
The master of the three mind controlled dudes has the most oddly, out of place look in the art I’ve seen thus far. It’d be like if they decided to include some classical art piece and do direct translation without any sort of adapatation. He stands out as western but it’s ugly with the surrounding environment which is quite the turn off for what was supposed to be quite a heartfelt reunion.
And that’s my biggest complaint. The Dark Tournament is lighting off with no breaks, and that goes for our contestants as they have to duke it out with multiple teams under desperate circumstances. I’m loving the tempo, the fights are clever and most characters stand out uniquely with their abilities.
I never did like Kurama all that much, ever so slowly he’s winning me over in the manga.
My babies have finally been introduced! As much as I love Chu and Rinku, Toya and Jin are without a doubt my favorite side characters in the series both in appearance and personality! And holy shit, I forgot how epic Yusuke's fight with Jin is! Damn, I had an absolute blast following that fight! I also adore Yusuke's budding friendship with Jin, it really is so cute and fun to see them get so excited about a fight and doing their best. It's also fun watching Hiei repeatedly threaten and stare down Luka because she's acting like such a hot shot, but clearly has no clue what she's gotten herself into.
Looking forward to the end of this match and moving on to another exciting match! No joke, I love this arc and am ready to plow through and finish it today!
It’s nice to be able to read this series and re-watch the anime. The nostalgia that hits me with each page and each minute puts me such a good mood, it makes me feel like I can do anything. Jin’s finally here, he’s one of my favorite side characters: he’s fun and with the thrill of fights in his veins. You can tell from the beginning of the fight with Urameshi that a strong bond will form between the two. Overall, the dark tournament saga is my favorite chapter from the series as the relationships between them are soaking in and character growth is at its peak. If you have not read Yu Yu Hakusho and you like Shonen Jump mangas, I highly recommend this.
In this volume, we are well into the Dark Tournament. We get to see more about how this tournament functions and people don't always play by the rules, in fact, it seems like the more power you have the more influence have on how things are run. In a broken system, Team Urameshi needs to find a way to win, but how far are they willing to go. Overall this is a really entertaining read. As always the fight scenes are masterfully drawn and seem to be getting better with each volume. We get to see more character development from our heroes as well as they work through these challenging fights.
How rigged the tournament is slightly distracting, to be very honest. It doesn't help with suspension of disbelief and immersion.
I do like where they've been going. Still a lot of interesting abilities and some new ones coming up. Togashi is doing a really good job of hyping Hiei's return and the mask fighter is drawing a lot of intrigue. Honestly, I just wish fights were a bit longer with abilities slightly more fleshed out. Each fighter soft of feels like we only see about half of their arsenal.
I can't put this down. I didn't get a chance to finish this manga when I was a kid so as an adult, I'm glad I can get the chance to do so.
There's a small inconsistency when Ko-enma said he could shut the tournament down if he wanted to, but chose not to (for good reasons). Then the demon said Ko-enma couldn't do anything about the tournament.
Time for Kurama and Yusuke to 2v5! I love how hilariously rigged the Dark Tournament is, with Yusuke and friends getting cheated and manipulated the entire time. Yusuke gets to really be the star here (fitting, for the main character), both in how he's also willing to cheat (sort of) and for how creative he ends up using his Rei Gun. It's a simple power, but seeing him manipulate it for either power or special effects is great.
As I get farther into this it has more and more in common with Hunter X Hunter. This feels like the space where Togashi learned the formulas that went on to make that series so consistent. That's not to say Yu Yu Hakusho is worse. It's a more playful work. You can just see the author figuring out what he wants to do as he goes.
The Dark Tournament continues. Fights in this volume:
- Kuwabara and Yusuke vs. Team Ichigaki - Masked Fighter vs. Team Ichigaki - Kurama vs. Gama the Ritual Body Art Master - Kurama vs. Toya the Ice Master - Kurama vs. Bakuken - Yusuke vs. Bakuken - Yusuke vs. Jin the Wind Master
im loving this so far. its really fun seeing how much Yusuke has progressed and seeing him fight alongside Genkai, it's cute. also, i really enjoyed seeing the others fighting styles, specially Kurama.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The tournament becomes even more rigged against Team Urameshi, having to fight immediately after barely getting through the second match, and down three people, but the guys are (literally) fighting for their lives and getting through it!
I love Yusuke's fight with Jin. That in itself was enough for a 5 stars. Made me forget I'm hella sick.....Hahaha I know what's coming next and I couldn't be more excited!!
The entire volume is pretty much just action, and plot doesn't particularly advance much here. Luckily, the action is engaging from start to finish, and characters like Jin are fun to watch fight.
