Killer Chocolate #3

Deck the Halls with Homicide: Killer Chocolate Mysteries, Book 3

Rate this book
When a holiday decorating contest turns deadly, twin sisters Alex and Hanna trade tinsel and twinkle lights for tracking the twists and turns of a cunning killer.

Alex and Hanna, owners of Murder and Mayhem book and chocolate shop, are hoping for a quiet holiday. That is, after Alex is finished judging the Deck the Halls contest organized by Vanessa, nicknamed “The Dragon.” The whole experience has turned Alex’s usual festive spirit a little grinchy. Instead of inspiring holiday cheer with fun lawn displays, the contest has turned cutthroat, and decorations have started disappearing.

After Alex’s beau, Tom, is seen in a heated argument with the Dragon about his stolen trimmings, Alex finds him dressed as Santa, kneeling over Vanessa’s dead body...with one of his missing candy cane decorations buried in her chest. It’s no surprise he becomes the sheriff’s top suspect.

Alex and Hanna quickly amass a cast of suspects deeper than Santa’s reindeer roster, including an old family friend tasked by their mother with romantic interference; a nosy reporter eager to reveal Alex’s previous murder exploits; and the victim’s psychologist-to-the-stars husband with a spicy secret. But as they try to catch a crafty killer, Alex also grapples with the escalating wrath of Tom’s daughter, and a mysterious psychic dropping cryptic clues, while Hanna deals with her own Christmas crisis.

Murder puts a bitter spin on the twins’ sweet confections and they must find the killer and wrap up the case to keep Santa off the naughty list.

Christina Romeril loves to plot murders, especially by poisoning. When she’s not plotting how to kill one of her characters she’s coming up with ways to dispose of the body. Since writing her debut novel her husband’s friends have been regularly checking on his well-being.

Christina also loves to read, eat chocolates, and travel when she’s not in her she shed writing. She grew up in Southern Ontario and spent most of her summers in Muskoka swimming, boating, and generally getting into mischief. She’s lived on both coasts of Canada and has a love of being near the water and close to a forest. Thus, it makes perfect sense that she moved to the prairies of Southern Alberta over twenty years ago.

During the warmer months you’ll find her escaping to nearby Waterton Lakes National Park with her cooler stocked full of chocolate and pastries. Occasionally, the once avid hiker will even set out on one of the many hiking trails and hope she doesn’t run into a hungry bear.

Christina's debut cozy mystery novel, A CHRISTMAS CANDY KILLING, released in 2022 and A NUTCRACKER NIGHTMARE, the second instalment in the Killer Chocolate Mysteries will be out October 17, 2023.

Deck the Halls With Homicide is the third Killer Chocolate mystery. I read and enjoyed the first two in the series and I'm happy I got a chance to read an early copy of this one, especially after staring at the cover and wondering how I could transport myself into the festive scene!

Not that I'd want to stay for long. Alex and Hanna seem like they'd be fun to hang out with, but they find too many bodies. And this particular case has Alex working harder than ever to solve the crime. Let's just say she resorts to different tactics than before. It was nice to see Hanna join in so enthusiastically. Their friends are great too and I love the cozy feel they bring.

The Christmas vibes are fun and the descriptions of the decorated yards and homes are great. I was suspicious of the killer but I didn't solve the mystery. Speaking of solving things, Alex was really smart in putting one particular piece together. A major piece actually. Things heat up in a suspenseful confrontation.

There is a lot of focus on Alex and Hanna's personal lives. I don't want to say anything, but there are some potentially exciting things to look forward to in the next book. You don't have to have read the first two books in the series to follow along in this one, but part of the storyline will be more satisfying if you do.

Deck the Halls With Homicide will be released October 28th. Thank you Christina Romeril for letting me be part of your ARC team!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Ho! Ho! Ho! Not all is merry and bright in Harriston, Montana, this Christmas season. The owners of Murder and Mayhem book and chocolate shop, Alex and Hannah, were hoping for a holiday with no murder or mayhem. Vanessa Lindstrom, aka The Dragon, is in charge of Harriston’s Deck the Halls contest, and she has appointed Alex to be one of the judges. The contest is very popular, but this year, many are going for over-the-top displays and spending hard-earned cash trying to ensure a win. Vanessa is the biggest offender with a huge display. With the fierce competition, some of the decorations have gone missing, including Alex’s beau, Tom’s candy canes that were lining his walkway, but The Dragon is more concerned is securing the win for herself than some random missing pieces of metal.

The judges arrive at the final entrant in the contest, Vanessa’s home, and see Tom dressed as Santa, kneeling on the ground. Alex soon realizes what she is seeing. The Dragon is dead, a metal candy cane stuck through her chest, and Tom has blood on his hands.

Alex and Hanna know he couldn’t have killed Vanessa, but the sheriff may need some convincing. The Dragon had made her share of enemies, so it isn’t hard to come up with a list of more likely suspects. As if finding a murderer isn’t enough, Hannah has another issue on her plate, and Tom’s daughter is doing her darndest to break up his relationship with Alex.

Murder and mayhem reign again in Harriston, and Alex and Hannah are right in the thick of it!

I was so happy to see that Christina Romeril was continuing this series, and she sure didn’t disappoint with Deck the Halls With Homicide.

The Murder and Mayhem book and chocolate shop is doing great. Hannah creates the chocolates with puny poison names, and Alex takes care of the books, but they both help each other out as needed. Each has a variety of things going on in their personal lives, but I am leaving it there because I don’t want to spoil anything.

Unraveling the murder mystery that is full of moving parts with a plethora of suspects, tricky twists and turns, and information coming from surprising places. Everyone is kept on their toes as they try to piece together the clues to catch the killer. Another death shakes things up as alibis are tested and striking history is revealed. I had a wonderful time following along for every minute of it.

Deck the Halls With Homicide is a fabulous addition to this series. The Halls were Decked, and there was Homicide aplenty. The core characters evolved so much within the pages of this story, all while solving a complicated whodunit. Set yourself up with some holiday goodies, your favorite warm beverage, and escape into Deck the Halls With Homicide as soon as possible. I am excited to see what murder and mayhem Ms. Romeril has planned for Alex, Hannah, and the people of Harriston next.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC.

Alex and Hanna are back with another mystery to solve, and this one will whisk readers away into a flurry of excitement as a holiday contest quickly goes from cheery to cutthroat. When pushy contest organizer, Vanessa, aka, "The Dragon" is found dead by her elaborate holiday display, there's no shortage of suspects. With swift pacing, plenty of red herrings, and mysterious psychic predictions, Romeril has penned another excellent mystery sure to give readers all the cozy, Christmas-y vibes. I love the continued character growth and development as the series progresses, and can't wait to see what's next in store for Alex and Hanna! Highly recommend to those who enjoy holiday themed reads and/or cozy mysteries. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My sincere thanks to the author for providing an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the latest book in the Killer Chocolate series. Alex and Hanna are identical twin sisters who run a mystery bookshop that also sells "Killer Chocolates". The candies have dangerous-sounding names like "Hemlock Hazelnut" but are actually harmless and delicious. It's almost Christmas and Alex is going to be a judge in Harrington, Montana's yard decorating contest. A series of break-ins into area shops are putting a damper on the season. Even worse, one of the contestants in the decorating contest is killed. Alex is determined to find the killer.

This is a fun book that will get you in the mood for the holidays. I love that the main characters are twins who run a business together. While things are going well for Hanna in her love life, Alexi's seems to have stalled in part because of the disapproving adult daughter of the man she is seeing.

After the killer strikes, Alex investigates a few different suspects with the reluctant blessing of law enforcement. Although Alex is a clever sleuth, after a while, the investigation goes in circles. Things start to pick up, leading to a dramatic showdown with a killer. I liked the ending of the book, and a couple of interesting developments left me eager for the next book to find out what happens next for the two sisters!

I received an advance copy of the ebook for review consideration from the author, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.

“Deck the Halls With Homicide” by Christina Romeril the 3rd instalment in the "A Killer Chocolate Mystery" series. I was excited to visit Alex and Hanna, owners of Murder and Mayhem book and chocolate shop in Montana. I missed reading book 2 but this can be read as a stand alone.

Alex and Hanna are back, and they're bringing the holiday cheer... and a dash of suspense! This latest mystery is a page-turner, with a contest that's more cutthroat than cozy, and a murder that'll keep you guessing. Vanessa's demise is just the start of a wild ride, with plenty of suspects and red herrings to keep you on your toes.

The story's got all the makings of a holiday classic: festive setting, quirky characters, and a dash of psychic mystery. Romeril's done a great job of weaving in character development, and I'm loving where things are headed with Alex and Hanna. The supporting cast is equally engaging, and the plot twists are expertly done.

If you're in the mood for a cozy, Christmas-y read, look no further! This one's got all the ingredients to make your holiday season a little brighter. Can't wait for the next instalment!

I requested and received an advance readers copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

ARC REVIEW: 4.25 ⭐️
First off, I love how this cozy mystery has twins in it. I also love how it is set around Christmas 🎄 time. Alex and Hannah compliment each other really well and I love their relationship.
One of the killers I kind of had pegged but the end was definitely a twist and I never would have guessed. I really like all the mysteries that popped up throughout and how it all seemed to connect and make sense in the end. This is definitely a series that I would suggest to others.

Deck the Halls with Homicide is Christina Romeril’s 3rd book in the Killer Chocolate Mystery series and it is a wonderful addition to the series. The characters are likable and the cozy mystery kept me guessing. Twins Alex and Hanna run Murder and Mayhem, a bookstore with a chocolate shop. The sisters are fun sleuths! Hanna is dating Deputy Sheriff Duncan Fletcher and Alex is dating Tom Kennedy, the local pastor. Harriston is having their Deck the Halls Contest and Alex is one of the judges. The contestants are becoming overly competitive and decorations are getting stolen. At one of the stops on the judge’s route, a local is found dead. Alex was asked to help the woman who ended up dead because she thought someone was trying to kill her. The suspects include Tom who was the one to find the woman dead. Tom’s family is creating problems for Alex and Tom. A family friend is visiting Alex and Hanna. Many of the suspects are hiding secrets so Alex and Hanna, with info from Duncan, sort through lies to find the truth. Alex realizes she needs to think about the future and I like the direction the series is going. This is an enjoyable book and series with family, friendship, warmth and humor. I received an advance copy for free from the author and I voluntarily leave this review. #DeckTheHallsWithHomicide #AKillerChocolateMystery #CrookedLaneBooks

Another wonderful addition to the Killer Chocolate Mystery series! It was so fun to be back with twins Alex and Hanna as they not only band together to solve another murder while running their book and chocolate shop, but navigate challenges in their own lives. I love a good holiday-themed cozy and this book gave me all the feels. You'll want to curl up next to a fire with a mug of peppermint hot chocolate and follow all the twists and turns of this delightful mystery. Everything from making sense of cryptic predictions from a psychic to motives that got deeper by the minute, the story kept me engaged from start to finish. Already wishing for the next book in the series!

"Deck the Halls With Homicide" is book #3 in the "Killer Chocolate" series by Christina Romeril.

The town is deep in the preparations and festivities of the holiday season. During the judging of a "Deck The Halls" yard decorating competition, the organizer, Vanessa, is found dead by fellow competitor Tom who had been seen arguing with her earlier. No surprise that someone wanted to kill the woman who was also known as "The Dragon" for her demanding diva personality but there is no way local pastor Tom would have killed the woman. So who did and why?

Alex feels compelled to clear her beau Tom of any suspicion. With the help of her twin Hanna and a few others, she slowly gathers the pieces while consuming delicious chocolates. It comes down to a risky plot that could go sideways if the pieces don't fall into place...

I do like the core characters of this series. As twins, Hanna and Alex can practically read each others minds but also know when to give the other space. I particularly like Alex's inner voice as it is often laced with snark! The dialogue and dynamics between them, as well as Maggie & Drew, Duncan and Tom are well done. A bit of extra drama was added by the arrival of the twins pseudo cousin Will as well as a pesky reporter - both of whom may or may not be suspects!

The potential suspects were quite numerous at first and of course they were all keeping some deep and damaging secrets. So many lies and misdirection! I did manage to eliminate several and had it pretty much figured out just before Alex put it together.

The twists in this story were really well done - both murder/suspect wise as well as the personal lives of several characters. Given the ending, I'm hoping there will be at least one or two more of this deliciously murderous holiday series!

Last year I had the pleasure of listening to Cristina Romeril's Killer Chocolate mystery books #1 and 2 in the series. As soon as I read that a third mystery book would be coming out before Christmas, I bought it and put it in my TBR list...there were so many fabulous Cozy Christmas themed mystery books this year that I wasn't able to listen to it by Christmas.

I must say that the series is a lot of fun, especially if you like chocolate, because twin sisters Alex and Hannah own "Murder and Mayhem", a book and chocolate shop. They make their own chocolates and give them funny names. Lots of quirky and endearing characters abound, and it was nice to reconnect with them again this year.

This year there is a holiday decorating contest, and Vanessa "The Dragon", one of the obnoxious judges, is murdered. Alex's boyfriend Tom is suspected in the killing, since he was discovered kneeling over Vanessa's body dressed as Santa Claus and the weapon was a missing candy cane! The twins get busy trying to clear his name. There is plenty of friction between the sheriff and the twins, but in the end, justice prevails, as one would expect.

I anxiously listened attentively to Rebecca Gallagher's superb "performance" as she interpreted every character's voice very distinctively, waiting until the tense ending. I really enjoyed not guessing correctly whodunnit among so many suspects, and was satisfied with the final outcome.

I highly recommend this book and the series to any mystery lover. I also hope there will me bore books in this series in the near future!

With its spirited wintry setting, decorating contest, and frosty rivalry, this holiday whodunit has everything you could want in a holiday mystery. I devoured this delicious candy-coated Christmas cozy! And I can't wait to read the next one.

Deck the Halls With Homicide is part of the Killer Chocolate Mysteries by Christina Romeril. The amateur sleuths are twin sisters Alex and Hanna, owners of Murder and Mayhem book and chocolate shop.

Alex is judging a community decorating contest organized by a woman so unpleasant she has been nicknamed "The Dragon." The contest gets cutthroat, decorations get stolen, and The Dragon ends up with a missing candy cane in her chest and a guy dressed as Santa kneeling over her dead body.

With holiday cheer in short supply and Santa on the naughty list, Alex and Hanna take it upon themselves to investigate.

The premise of a holiday decorating contest gone rogue is really fun. The atmosphere is thoroughly festive and gives the story heart. Author Christina Romeril cleverly uses the season as a backdrop, a motif, and a device to heighten tension and delight simultaneously.

This cozy checks all the other boxes as well: engaging characters, a smart mystery with good twists, and a rich setting. If you’re looking for a seasonal read that combines sleuthing with sparkle, this is the book for you.

“They’ll have to rename the town Cabot Cove.” Alex and twin sister Hanna have to solve yet another murder during the Christmas season, turning their quaint village of Harriston, Montana into a Rocky Mountain Cabot Cove, pulling you into a cozy Christmas mystery with just enough twists and almost enough chocolate. Deck the Halls with Homicide by Christina Romeril has all the right elements of the perfect cozy mystery and had me guessing the whole time!! I kept thinking I knew who the murderer was, only to turn the page and uncover another clue. The mystery and Christmas references were balanced so well throughout the book while also introducing me to new Christmas traditions and helping me grow my TBR! I absolutely loved the character development in this third Killer Chocolate mystery, especially Alex’s evolution at the end of the book. Get ready to curl up with a cozy blanket and fill your hot cocoa with lots of marshmallows as you help Alex and Hanna solve the latest murder mystery threatening to ruin Christmas.

Alex co-owns the Murder and Mayhem book and chocolate shop with her sister Hanna. She agrees to judge the annual Deck the Halls holiday decorating contest in her little town. When a meddlesome and unpleasant neighbor turns up dead, Alex's boyfriend is a suspect. Alex works as an amateur detective to solve the mystery.

I wanted to read this book because the Christmas setting and book/chocolate shop locale were very appealing.

This is my first book in the Killer Chocolate Mysteries series. I was able to jump in comfortably and enjoy this book as a standalone read (although I now want to read the rest of the series!).

As anticipated, I loved the holiday setting. I also enjoyed the picturesque little town and the mystery bookstore/chocolate shop. (Their specialty is Killer Chocolates, all with deadly names!)

I like Alex as a protagonist. She is bright and resourceful with her detecting. I enjoyed sleuthing right along with her!

I recommend Deck the Halls with Homicide for other cozy mystery fans, and especially for anyone who enjoys holiday theme mysteries.

I had such a fun time with this festive cozy mystery! Set in a charming Montana town, the story followed twin sisters Alex and Hanna as they tried to enjoy the holidays—until a decorating contest turned deadly. The small-town setting added a cozy, wintry vibe that made the mystery even more atmospheric.

The red herrings were so well done—I kept second-guessing myself the whole way through. Just when I thought I had it figured out, Romeril threw in another twist that had me rethinking everything. I also loved the hint of a new love interest for Alex (yes please to more romantic tension in book 4!) and the identical twin dynamic added a playful layer to the sleuthing.

Between the chocolate shop, the quirky suspects, and a psychic with cryptic clues, this book wrapped up everything I love about holiday-themed mysteries. Definitely one to add to your seasonal TBR!

Thank you to the author for the arc. All thoughts expressed in this review are my own.

After such a long wait for this 3rd book in the Killer Chocolate mystery series I can honestly say it was worth the weight!

I love the identical twins Alex and Hanna I laughed when Alex was dubbed the Grim Reaper because of her track record of finding dead bodies.

When Vanessa Lindstorm's aka The Dragon body is found the night of the judging of the deck the Halls competition and Alex's boyfriend Tom is discovered over the body with the murder weapon she knows he didn't do it and is determined to clear his name despite being warned numerous times not to interfere. Alex also feels a duty to solve the murder because Vanessa came to her asking for her help. She was convinced someone was trying to kill her.

As Alex and Hanna start to sleuthing they discover a town full of suspects.

I couldn't put this book down! I laughed, figured out an anagram and fell in love all over again with this series

This Christmas season begins with a rash of robberies. The neighbors are resorting to anything to win the decorating competition. And it's not Christmas if Alex doesn't find a body. Add in psychic predictions, suspicious characters, and Watson the dog for as many plot twists as a box of assorted chocolates.
I had some "aha" moments about certain clues as I read and felt pretty smart, but there was still enough red herrings and potential suspects to keep me guessing who the killer might be.
I love the chocolate theme (although I missed the recipes that were in previous books) and the occasional bit of German slipped in. I'm happy this series has continued and am excited to see what will happen next with all the changes coming for the characters.

This was my first time reading a book from the Killer Chocolate Mystery series, and I really enjoyed it. The story takes place during the holiday season in a small town and it has all the cozy vibes I love in a festive mystery.

The main characters are twin sisters, Alex and Hanna, who run a bookstore that also sells chocolates with fun, spooky names. I liked their dynamic and how they worked together to solve the mystery. Alex gets pulled into judging a Christmas decorating contest, but things take a dark turn when one of the contestants ends up dead. From there, the mystery kicks off, and I was hooked trying to figure out who did it.

There were lots of suspects. The story had some good twists. I especially liked how the town’s holiday cheer mixed with the suspense.

Reading this book in December made it even more fun to read. Twin sisters Alex and Hanna run Murder and Mayhem book and chocolates store in Montana. Alex has agreed to help judge the Deck the Halls contest. Residents are encouraged to decorate the front of their houses and yards. The night of the judging, Tom Kennedy, Alex's boyfriend, finds Vanessa Lindstrom, with a candy cane protruding from her chest by her display!! Alex can't believe that she is involved in another Christmas murder. This book does a good job of following the work and personal lives of the sisters. I loved the small town atmosphere. The plot has a lot of murder suspects, twists and turns, and surprises. I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Now with the complete series on under my belt I find myself saddened that the story of ameture sleuth Alex Wright has come to an end. At least until the next book is written! Like the others, Deck the Halls with Homicide, kept me guessing and pleasantly imerced. Seeing as I'd read the second half in a single day. I felt a pinch of pride when I had predicted a few of the plot reveals. However, several things did still shock me. Aside from the A+ mystery building, I absolutely loved the character development throughout the series so far, it almost felt as though I were part of the small-town myself. I never thought cozy mysteries were my jam, but this Killer Chocolate series changed that. Now... I need more!

It was very refreshing to read a Christmas themed book when it's over 90 degrees outside. I didn't realize how much I missed Alex and Hanna until I started this book. I love when the main characters are middle aged. I find them more relatable. I should feel a little bad but right away in this book I picked which character I wanted to die and sure enough I was correct. Ha! I wasn't quite able to predict whodunit but that just means it's a really good book. Can't wait until my library gets their copy of this book so I can share it with all of my cozy mystery loving patrons.

My first Christmas read of the season, and what could be better than a cozy mystery set in a combined candy and book shop?! I’ll go pack my bag and head out right now to see Alex and Hanna (although, minus the murder, please!).

This is such a great series, featuring the perfect combination of a suspenseful mystery and cozy Christmas details. I felt immersed in the story and while I had a little guess as to who might be the true culprit, I had no idea how to prove it! It was a fun ride to the resolution, and what a show down we had then!. I gobbled this up in just a day and it had me ready to put up my own holiday decorations. You can grab this as a standalone, and then I bet you’ll be adding the first two books on your holiday TBR!

This was my first time listening to an audiobook in this series. The holiday setting and decorating contest made this especially festive, and I loved all the small-town chaos that came with it.

I really enjoy Alex and Hanna, and hearing their story brought to life in audio made the characters even more engaging. With so many suspects and twists, this was easy to stay invested in, and I found myself wanting to keep listening to see what happened next.

This continues to be a cozy, entertaining series, and I would definitely recommend the audiobook version!

Fun cozy mystery with a slightly weird affectation - no cuss words, only sort of cutesy allusions to them. And then there’s the frequent references to church, which isn’t abnormal when a preacher is the love interest, but the insertion of a fortune teller and a seemingly accurate tarot card reading makes it weird.

Overall, cute story, I’d read another one.

I enjoyed this humorous cozy mystery. I laughed out loud several times. It reminds me a lot of the booktown mysteries set in NH. I'm tired of the overused trope of female amateur sleuth confronts killers alone at night in a vacant store. Other than that I thought the mystery was well done and the characters were intriguing.
