The Lone Island Mystery

Rate this book
A wealthy family. An isolated island. A dead body. Is it a tragic accident or foul play? The Shell House Detectives are investigating again…

Lone Island is a remote and windswept spot, but for nature reserve warden Pippa Grant it’s always been a haven. Until a body washes ashore—and she’s the one to find it.

The police believe the deceased, Axel Marks, accidentally fell from the cliffs near Porthmerrin House, the grand estate on the mainland where Axel’s mother once served as housekeeper to the Grey family. But Pippa is adamant that there’s more to Axel’s death, and begs Ally and Jayden, the Shell House Detectives, to take the case.

Soon it emerges that Axel had a troubled past, and a complicated history with both Edward Grey and his son, Lucas. As the reasons behind Axel’s visit to Porthmerrin become clear, Ally and Jayden feel sure that the house holds the key, and both owners and staff come under scrutiny. But when the police switch their focus back to Lone Island, Ally and Jayden are forced to question whether it’s their client who has something to hide.

Was Axel murdered out of jealousy and greed, or because of an ancient betrayal? And how far will the killer go to achieve their ultimate goal? As Ally and Jayden finally bring the devastating truth to light, it’s clear that Axel’s death was just the beginning of the story…

The body of ex-soldier Axel Marks has washed up on Lone Island.

What an utterly fantastic book. It’s been a while since I have read one of The Shell House Detectives books but The Lone Island Mystery has reminded me just how brilliant they are. I absolutely loved it.

Being back in the company of Ally and Jayden is akin to slipping into silken sheets, so smooth is the writing. Emylia Hall provides just enough background detail so that first time readers understand her characters, but it doesn’t matter at all if this is the first book a reader has encountered in the series. The Lone Island Mystery is so skilfully wrought that it can be read equally enjoyably as part of a series or a stand alone story.

Emylia Hall’s prose is mesmerising. Her ability to create setting through the use of the senses and through the most imaginative similes, creates vivid and painterly images in the mind’s eye. Her dialogue (with the occasional asides) is natural and engaging so that it feels as if these are real conversations, drawing in the reader completely. Genuinely, reading The Lone Island Mystery is like stepping into a film but with real people. I really felt part of the action.

Indeed, the characters feel so much more than fictional creations. The relationship between Ally and Jayden is pitch-perfect and every minor character is rounded, pertinent to the plot and interesting. I think what makes The Lone Island Mystery so special is that these wonderful people mean the narrative is written with warmth and humanity. It sounds rather exaggerated to say so, but being back with Ally, Jayden, Mullins et al felt rather like coming home. I hadn’t realised how much I had missed them.

The storytelling is magnificent. Opening in dramatic fashion in the Prologue, The Lone Island Mystery is balanced beautifully by a quieter Epilogue. In between is a brilliantly plotted, completely absorbing story with several surprises along the way and of course I can’t say more without spoilers! A couple of minor plot lines involving Ally and Jayden serve to enhance the heightened drama of the main story, making for an entertaining, emotional and compelling read.

In amongst the cracking story are sensitively presented themes of mental health, family and relationships, romantic attraction and all manner of realistic elements that add humour, drama and engagement. Whilst she might be writing diverting crime fiction, this author shows just how much she understands the strengths and vulnerabilities of us all and Emylia Hall displays intelligent understanding of people’s motivation and perceptions.

The Lone Island Mystery has everything a reader might want. There’s a fabulous plot with superb insight into human nature, set in places that thrum with reality. I thought it was totally wonderful and could not have enjoyed it more.

When I reflect on this story, I come away with a sense of sadness. True, this is a murder mystery, so that is not a surprise, but what I mean is that so many characters seem to radiate sadness unrelated to the deaths. From the start, I wanted to know why someone would want to be alone so much that they took a job caring for an island and chose to stay when their partner left. If you needed an example of how money cannot buy happiness, take a look at the family in this story.

The author did a good job confusing me, leading me down paths that didn't seem to go anywhere. The subplots tickled my interest along the way. From the start of the series, I have liked the Shell House Detectives' camaraderie. The way their life experiences complement each other. Again, we are treated to just how good this works. Ally and Jayden are supported by good friends and don't take that lightly. Another plus.

The theme of complex relationships (my interpretation) permeated the main plot and the subplots. A bit of a spoiler here, I like that Gus is still around, and Ray has not upset the dynamic of the Shell House Detectives and their support family. In this one and the last, we've seen Mullins mature. I think I also see a greater friendship, maybe even romance, brewing between him and Saffron.  I was surprised by the sergeant's turn in this story - he, too, was working through a complex relationship.

Throughout the story, bits and pieces were dripped, moving through the relationships and the weather. I was glad that lessons were learned from past cases and more thought was put into it before rushing into danger. After all, there is a 1-year-old's birthday party to plan.

There is one point that I didn't see resolved, and maybe I am the only one who was looking for it to be. It didn't detract from the story, but it remains a curious point for me. I was on edge reading this story as I plodded along, hoping to figure out the guilty party first (I didn't).

A good addition to the series. I have some hopes for the next one, relationship-wise.

Happy Reading!

I was so excited to receive this ALC from #BrillianceAudio and #NetGalley!!
I just adore this series. I own them all up to this book, but I’ve only read the first three. But as soon as I saw this one on NetGalley I had to request it, and woohoo! I got it!!

This one has a body wash up on the shore of a little island that’s a nature preserve and only a caretaker lives on. The mystery takes a few twists and turns that kept me guessing. As always, the author describes this coastal area so beautifully. I feel like I can breathe in the fresh ocean air while reading it. I just love the ambiance and atmosphere of this quaint little seaside village. And the characters. I love them all!! Jayden’s fierce protectiveness, Allie’s heart, Gus’s thoughtfulness, Mullen’s naive goofiness, Saffron’s gentleness. They’re all great on their own, and magic together. Allie is especially my favorite - a widow who wants to isolate herself, but keeps pushing herself outside of her comfort zone, thanks to her few dear friends. Even though her life didn’t turn out the way she was expecting, she’s mostly positive, and sees beauty in everything and everyone around her. She’s a gem.

This is a feel good cozy mystery that made me smile.

Thank you NetGalley and Brilliance Audio for the ARC of this audiobook.

This mystery was just okay. I hadn't read any of the other books in this series, so I'm not familiar with the characters, but it felt like it was all just okay and not very memorable. I think it's difficult to write a thriller/mystery in a small town because it can get boring pretty quickly

It’s always a pleasure to pay a visit to Porthpella and catch up with the Shell House Detectives, Ally and Jayden. In The Lone Island Mystery, they are contacted by nature reserve warden Pippa who wants them to investigate a death. She lives on Lone Island and has discovered the body of ex-soldier Axel Marks, apparently drowned. The police feel there are no suspicious circumstances but she is convinced there’s more to it than a simple accident.

I was soon intrigued by the investigation as Ally and Jayden discover more about the deceased and how there may well have been more to his death than immediately meets the eye. There are so many layers to the investigation and I was quickly absorbed in the story as our determined detectives slowly peeled away each layer to get to the truth. There are secrets being held by many of the characters and Ally and Jayden have to decide just who is telling the truth.

Of course, each book in the series focuses on a new investigation and therefore each book is a standalone read. However, having followed these characters from the start, I very much enjoy seeing what’s been happening in their personal lives too. I feel like I know the main characters quite well now and am fully invested in their daily lives and relationships. This, of course, is a result of the author’s ability to create fully rounded and relatable characters.

I must mention Kristin Atherton’s marvellous narration. She really brings the story to life and expresses the emotions of the characters so well. I can’t imagine reading a Shell House mystery without her voice in my head, either literally through my headphones or in my imagination through the written words.

The Lone Island Mystery is another compelling read from Emylia Hall. The mystery will keep you guessing, there are some lighter moments and plenty of emotion. The well paced plot kept me guessing to the end which was unexpectedly poignant yet convincing. I thought I had it figured out but the author had some surprises up her sleeve near the end which proved me wrong. There were plenty perilous moments for the characters including for Mullins who I confess to having a soft spot for. The Lone Island Mystery is another excellent addition to the Shell House detectives series and perfect for anyone who enjoys a cleverly written crime novel with real insight into human nature.

I enjoyed this little mystery, that had so much going on it stayed intriguing all the way through. This is book seven in the series and having only just discovered this dynamic and creative team with book six, I can safely say the books can be read as stand alone mysteries, that just seem to get better the more you get to know the characters. I did enjoyed book six but found I enjoyed this one even more and I was soon swept up in the different layers of the investigation. It's the type of story that I would settle down and watch the two part series on tv.
I like the main characters in Ally and Jayden but there are a number of side characters that are just as colourful and memorable. The story is written with heart, that soon has you invested in the out come for them all. I had my suspicions who the killer was but the author took it in a different direction that had me questioning my choice. I was proved right in the end but enjoyed the ride getting there, especially with all the red herrings involved and I loved the way they pieced it altogether, like a good detective team should.

When a body washes up on a deserted island, the sole occupier turns to the Shell House Detectives for help, when the police seem ready to write it off. Pippa believes it to be murder and now doesn't feel safe on the Island she used to call her haven. The dead man was a homeless ex soldier from the main land, one that use to have connects to the big house. When news of the owner of the houses death the same day as the prodigal son's return, Ally and Jayden take a closer look at the man's true descendants. There investigation sparks the police into also taking a closer look into the case but there suspicions falls more on the detectives own client, Pippa. Did she hire them too take the suspicion off herself? Or are they right in looking closer into the dead man's military background and what brought him back to where his mother use to work?

I liked the narrator. She brings a spark to the story that has you locking your doors, so you can just sit back and enjoy.
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was an excellent addition to an amazing series!

I love being "in" Porthpella with Ally, Jayden, Saffron, Gus and the rest of the crew [my respect for Mullins intesified in this book and WHO knew Skinner could be so human? NOT this reader that's for sure!], and this was a very dark, sad, and twisty mystery that they are all thrust into; one that really takes its toll on everyone, and brings them to the very brink of some serious danger.

Even though I had guessed the who and the why early on, that knowledge never once took away from the overall experience of this amazing book; at several points I was sure I was wrong [I was not, but it was so good to be led astray so to speak], and that reveal? I held my breath through most of it and then let it out slowly as everything finally unfolded. I really love this series and I highly recommend it to everyone - it is the kind of series that makes you wish you knew these people in real life so you could have a coffee and brownie with Saffron whilst talking murder with Ally and Jayden - THAT is what a great book/mystery will do for you!

Kristin Atherton once again narrates this book most excellently. She really makes the story come alive, you are never confused as to who is speaking and she can really bring the emotion as well. I have listened to her in other books as well and she has quickly become a real favorite and is my top 10 favorite narrators. I highly recommend this audiobook and its stellar narrator.

Thank you to NetGalley, Emylia Hall, Kristin Atherton - Narrator, Amazon Publishing UK/Thomas & Mercer, and Brilliance Publishing/Brilliance Audio for providing the eBook and audiobook ARC's in exchange for an honest review.

The Lone Island Mystery
by Emylia Hall
Narrated by Kristin Atherton

This was a well done mystery set in England. It’s part of the Shell House Detectives series. I hadn’t read any of these prior but feel this was an easy standalone.

The setting of a small private island was fabulous for this mystery and thriller. Picture a cold, rocky, and windy beach with cliffs when the dead body of Axel Marks is found. Pippa who cares for the preserve and island discovers the body and hires two PI’s to help
solve the mystery because somehow, Pippa knows it wasn’t accidental.

I enjoyed the variety of characters, especially the FLC, Ally, and MLC, Jaden, who did the narrating of this thriller. I especially enjoyed the female narrator. The male narrator was a bit too dramatic for me, but not enough to stop listening to the audio.

I am grateful to the author, Emylia Hall, NetGalley, and the publisher, Brilliance Publishing | Brilliance Audio for the advanced copy on Audio.

This was a real 'whodunnit' of a story!

A man has washed up on the shore of a basically uninhabited island... except for the nature reserve warden, Pippa, who lives there alone. And when I say a remote island, I mean that... you can only reach the island by boat!

The Police have done a preliminary investigation, and they believe that this was a suicide, or possibly just a drunken fall. But in any case, it does not warrant any further digging!

Pippa, however, does not feel the same. And, she hires a couple of PI's to investigate the death further. And what they turn up definitely does not look like an accident OR suicide.

Funny thing though... as they are turning over ever new evidence, I kept thinking that I had it all figured out... but I was totally wrong!! Never would've guessed that ending in a million years!

4 bold, bright, burning, sweet, beautiful stars for me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

5* Good catch-up with the characters, although a sad tale.

I'm not sure how much time has lapsed since the previous book, but Jayden and Cat have a 1yo son and a 3yo daughter now. An former teen love is trying to become a more permanent fixture in Ally's life, but she's still stuck on her late husband Bill, and there's her good old friend Gus, who's finally stopped talking about finishing his novel and has gotten there, and is doing edits. Add in DS Mullins and the café owner whose name I forget, and the same characters all muck in to make a going tale. Even Mullins's 'I hate the Shell House detectives' boss seems a tad more likeable and on-board.

There's a sad tale of inheritance, of trying to right 'wrongs'; of living with PTSD and loss; of dysfunctional families; of the price of war; of betrayal by a loved one - or more - and lies. The dovetailing is excellent and the flawed but understandably so characters, I warmed to. Except one who seemed so charitable but turned out to be anything but. There's great sleuthing, some danger, a thawing of relations between Ally, Jayden and the police, with hints of respect and more collaborations in future tales. The Axel part of the tale is very sad, especially so as it sounded as if he might be trying to turn his life around...the prologue catches at the heart... It's an excellent tale, with some doors opening and others closing.

As someone who reads a lot of mystery novels, I really enjoyed this one! This is my first Emylia Hall book, and I'll definitely be adding more of her work to my TBR! While this book can be read as a standalone, I think I would've understood the character relationships and dynamics more if I had read the earlier books in the series. Nevertheless, I was hooked from the beginning.

When a body is found on the shore, Ally and Jayden are recruited to help solve the mystery. They quickly discover that uncovering the truth will require them to dig deep, and not everything is as it seems. One thing that stood out to me was the working relationship between Ally and Jayden. It’s not often I come across books where the main characters’ central partnership is non-romantic, and I really appreciated that dynamic.

I also loved the book setting; the small-town atmosphere and townspeople felt quirky. While I might have missed a little bit of character nuances not having read the previous books in the series, it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story.

Overall, I found this to be a well-paced, very compelling mystery novel. The more sensitive subjects were handled thoughtfully, and the storyline kept me intrigued throughout. I will definitely be going back to start this series from the beginning.

A big thanks to NetGalley, Emylia Hall, and Thomas & Mercer for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Absolutely loved this seventh trip back to Porthpella. Returning here always feels like a warm hug...if you ignore the murder.

One of the biggest strengths of this series is the core cast, who somehow just keep getting better with every book. I loved how in sync Ally and Jayden were this time around, and their dynamic with Mullins (#TeamMullins) and Skinner added so much warmth and humour. I’d absolutely love spend an afternoon hanging out with Gus and Saffron at Hang Ten. #TeamGus

At the heart of the story is a brilliant but tragic mystery. I felt far more sympathy for the victim, Axel Marks, than in the previous book, and Emylia handled the themes around veterans and trauma with sensitivity. The suspect pool is small, made up of the family and staff at Grey House, and every one of them had moments that made me suspicious. Was Axel murdered, or did he really just fall from the cliffs? Secrets, inheritance, resentment, and loyalty all weave through the investigation.

I also love how much care goes into the subplots and relationships. They add real depth and richness beyond the central mystery.

And as always, the setting is incredible. Lone Island, Porthpella and the wild Cornish coastline feel completely alive on the page. Emylia writes place so vividly you can feel the sand dunes between your toes and the sea spray on your face.

Cosy crime with a little more grit, heart, and atmosphere than most.

This was my first book by Emylia Hall, and I’m really glad I picked it up. Set along Cornwall’s wild, isolated coastline, the atmosphere is one of the standout elements; the setting feels vivid and immersive, almost like a character in its own right. There’s a quiet tension running through the story that kept me intrigued.

The mystery begins when a local man is found washed up on a private island, and what initially looks like an accident quickly starts to feel more complicated. As Ally and Jayden dig deeper, secrets, family tensions, and long-buried truths come to light. I really enjoyed their partnership and it’s refreshing to see a strong, non-romantic dynamic at the center of the story.

Even though this is the seventh book in the Shell House Detectives series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. That said, I do think I would’ve had a better grasp of some character relationships if I’d read the earlier books first.

The pacing is more on the slow-burn side. It took me a little while to fully get into it, but once it picked up in the middle, I found myself much more invested. The story focuses more on mood and character than constant twists, which I appreciated.

Overall, this is an engaging and atmospheric mystery with a strong sense of place. I’m looking forward to checking out the earlier books in the series.

I jumped into the Shell House Detectives series with this, book #7, and had very little difficulty with not starting at the beginning. This book could easily be read as a standalone, although I will be on the lookout for future books in the series and may go back and read the prior books. I listened to the book, and found that the narrator gave an almost transparent performance. By that I mean that she did not get in the way of the story or characters in any way, but allowed the book to speak fairly directly to the reader. The only exception to that was her voicing of the two police department characters, which I found a bit abrasive.

Ally and Jayden, the Shell House Detectives, are likeable as they deal with both their personal lives and a suspicious death. It was not difficult to jump right into both personal and investigative details, and both characters are likeable and fairly nuanced. The setting of this book is the eponymous Lone Island, a wildlife sanctuary, as well as the mainland manor and grounds of the people connected with the island. The descriptions are transportative, and I had a clear image in my mind as the events of the book played out. The plot is fairly complex, with the reader discovering details as the detectives do so. In addition to the mystery surrounding a death in the waters between the island and the mainland, the book deals with issues of mental illness and greed. The plot and characters are distinct enough for the book to not seem derivative, although it is a cozy novel that avoid gruesome and gory details.

I enjoyed this quite a bit and am happy to have found a new series to follow.

"The Lone Island Mystery" is book #7 in the "Shell House Detectives" series by Emylia Hall.

"A wealthy family. An isolated island. A dead body. Is it a tragic accident or foul play? The Shell House Detectives are investigating again…"

Ally and Jadyn are convinced there is more to this than an accident. The pair work through a wide variety of potential scenarios and a few potential suspects to sort out the truth from the lies and omissions. There thought process and procedures are insightful and well played. For me, there were only a couple of really strong suspects and I did narrow in on one well before the reveal but there was so much well placed misdirection and possibilities of how it all could have gone down that it would be easy for readers to be lead down the wrong path.

I do love the core characters of this series. The various relationships, interactions and ongoing relationships (good and otherwise) feel realistic and relatable. Readers are given a bit more insight into the personal lives of several situations but at the same time there is still so much to explore in future books.

Overall, this was an excellent mystery that kept me turning the pages to see how it all played out!

The Shell House Detectives are back with another murder to solve... because the police can't (or won't). A 30-something man washes up on the shore of Lone Island (near Cornwall, UK). It turns out he was the son of the wealthy owner of Porthmerrin House, an estate up on the cliff, where he was presumed to have fallen into the sea by misadventure. The Shell House detectives agree to take on the case and eventually find enough evidence to have it reopened...and solved. But then something just doesn't sit right...and they finally uncover the truth.
This is my second Shell House Detective story with Ally and Jayden. I enjoy their perseverance, their unique approach to obtaining evidence, and their obvious satisfaction in a job well done. It's also refreshing to read about a pair of co-workers who support each other without anyone crossing a line or others getting jealous. That's how it should be. The audiobook narration is very good. 4.2 stars

Another engrossing book in the series & I thoroughly enjoyed partly reading & partly listening to the story, the narrator, Kristin Atherton did a brilliant job & really brought the book to life. A well paced story with wonderful characters. There were twists, turns & red herrings but Ally & Jayden are on the case, I was left guessing which is always a bonus, I thought I’d worked it out but then a twist proved me wrong.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

This series is an utter joy - and I enjoyed Book 7 as much as the first. (I think you would be able to read this as a standalone, as the author catches you up with the things you need to know about Ally, Jayden and Gus, without making it too repetitive for those who've read the whole series - though if you haven't read them, start at the beginning as they're excellent.)

This one's about inheritance, dysfunctional families, betrayal and lies - and there are a lot of excellent red herrings. I felt so sorry for Axel, the man whose body was discovered on the island - and also for Pippa, who discovered the body and was then seen as a suspect.

Lots of twists and turns; interesting developments in Ally's love life; nice tension between the Shell House Detectives and the police (I started to feel sympathy for Skinner in this one; and Mullins REALLY stepped up). The characterisation is fabulous, the plot's nicely complex, and the writing is just beautiful.

Thoroughly recommended.

🎧 ALC Review from Brilliance via NetGalley

📚 The Lone Island Mystery — Emyla Hall
🎧 Narrated by Kristin Atherton
📅 Releases 4.28.26

This is a quiet, atmospheric mystery set against an isolated coastal backdrop, where the setting plays just as much of a role as the characters. The story leans into that closed-circle tension—remote location, limited suspects, and a lingering sense that something isn’t quite right beneath the surface.

The pacing is more measured than fast-paced, focusing on mood, relationships, and the gradual uncovering of secrets rather than constant twists. It’s the kind of mystery that builds slowly, letting the unease settle in before revealing its hand.

The narration complements the tone well, adding to the immersive, slightly haunting feel of the setting.

Overall, a solid choice for listeners who enjoy atmospheric mysteries with a steady build and a strong sense of place.

Although this is book 7 in a series, it's the first of those books I've read. I had no trouble enjoying this book.

When a local resident washes up on a private island, the police think he jumped from a cliff, or perhaps fell out of a kayak. He'd been the son of an employee at an estate and he'd grown up in the area. He had been in the service and had PTSD. But it didn't sit right with two sleuths, who decided to investigate further.

It turns out thee is family intrigue, jealousy, and more involved in the man's life and death. Who was involved? What happened? So much hidden from view.

The narrator, Kristin Atherton, did an excellent job of creating voices for all the characters and she kept the listener interested.

I enjoyed this mystery. I was very happy to have received early versions of both the e-book and audiobook. Thanks for NetGalley and the Publishers for these books.

"Lone Island lies to the east of Porthpella, about a mile offshore...And save for a tiny cottage used by the appointed wildlife warden, Lone Island is uninhabited. Most would consider it an isolated outpost...but Ally can imagine how wonderful it would feel: a world unto itself, at one with nature. The utter peace.
Until the tide brings in a dead body, that is."

Book seven of the Shell House Detectives Mystery series is another good one, after a body washes up on shore. It's always good to be back with amateur detective Ally and former police officer, Jayden and the gang, helping those who need them. The new cast of characters include a number of suspects, there's an island and a grand house, plus the Cornish, coastal setting is a character in its own right as ever. A wonderful standalone mystery with emotional depth, but I implore you to read all the novels in this series for the main characters' stories.

Book seven in the Shell House Detectives Mystery series. I have read them all to date.

A body washes up on a beach - could it be suicide or an accidental drowning? Pippa Grant believes it may even be murder and asks Ally and Jayden to take the case. They soon find themselves involved in an intricate and dangerous investigation.

After so many books starting this one was like meeting up with old friends. Jayden and Cat are getting better at problem solving in their relationship and seem comfortable now with their work and two small children. Ally is forced to sort out her relationship with Ray, and I think we all feel sorry for Gus waiting patiently to one side. Best of all is Mullins getting something he has wanted all along.

It all makes for a very enjoyable read. I am looking forward to the next one already.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I have no familiarity with this series, so I cannot judge the ongoing plotlines of the detectives' personal lives. However, I can judge the sad excuse for a mystery.

Getting into this book took quite a long time. Eventually I became invested, but the payoff was lacking.

Things always seem to be convenient for these detectives. Evidence falls into their laps with little or no effort on their parts, yet they have some sort of reputation that follows them of being both a pain in the side to law enforcement and the only reason cases get solved.

Additionally, the perspective changes far too often and it is hard to keep track of whose brain I'm supposed to be in. I can't care about these people when I'm hopping around so much. The author sacrifices clarity for style far too often.

I received this audiobook through NetGalley as an ARC/ALC. Opinions are my own; thanks to BrillianceAudio for the read.

Emylia Hall’s The Lone Island Mystery is a masterfully atmospheric thriller that utilizes its isolated setting to create a palpable sense of unease and escalating tension. Hall excels at evocative world-building, painting the island as a beautiful yet claustrophobic character that mirrors the internal conflicts of the protagonists as they unravel a layered and sophisticated puzzle. The narrative is driven by sharp, psychological insight and a steady accumulation of secrets, ensuring that the mystery feels both deeply personal and high-stakes. While the pacing is deliberate, it serves to heighten the immersion, leading to a conclusion that is as emotionally resonant as it is surprising. It is a haunting and beautifully written mystery that confirms Hall’s talent for blending rich, sensory prose with a gripping, tightly wound plot.

If you’re looking for a cozy murder mystery to wind down with then this book is perfect.

A body washes up on the shore of a small island. The police first write it off as not suspicious. But for Pippa, the lone island resident, something doesn’t feel right. So she reaches out to Ally and Jayden, the Shell House Detectives, who work to unlock the mystery of Axel Marks’ death.

I will put my hands up and say, I didn’t realise this book was book 7 in a series! Obviously if I had read the others some context would be clearer, or more info on characters backgrounds, BUT I think this book really hold itself! I don’t feel like I was missing anything, the story was easy to follow and was a fun murder mystery.

🎧The narrator did a great job of bringing the characters to life.

I have a complicated relationship with cozy mysteries. Often I find cozy is a euphemism for “slightly crap”. I first picked up The Shell House Detectives a while back - possibly as an Amazon First Reads - and I fell in love with the Cornish coast and the ensemble cast of characters (not to mention the intriguing mystery). The Lone Island Mystery is Book 7 in the series and, by now, picking up one of these books feels like meeting old friends. The characters are well developed and each have their own arcs. There are will-they-won’t-theys playing out from book to book that are starting to bear fruit. And the mystery itself is actually engaging. While this can be read as standalone to a degree, i really recommend picking up the series.

Another book in the brilliant Shell House Detectives Mystery series is always exciting news, and this one did not disappoint.
When a body is found by the warden on Lone Island, it quickly becomes clear that all is not as it seems.
Fortunately Ally and Jayden are soon on the case; it's always lovely to revisit these wonderful characters, along with Gus, Saffron (although in all honesty, I'm not a fan of Mullins' nickname for her) and the rest of the Porthpella residents.
With grateful thanks to NetGalley, Amazon Publishing UK and Emylia Hall for my advance copy of the ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Book 7 of the Shell House Detectives Mystery series once again follows Ally & Jayden as they take us through another fun filled crime solving mission; with the help of their usual gang of friends (and foes) along the way.

When the dead body of Axel Marks washes up on Lone Island Ally is approached by Pippa Grant, the islands nature reserve warden, to help uncover what truly happened to him. From delving into Axel’s past, discovering possible motives, and to finally solving the crime this book is full of the twists and turns you come to expect from a book in this series.
