Surviving death is one thing, but can a reborn demonic cultivator survive studying under the high brow of his new--and oddly familiar--cat-like master? See how his plans go from purrfect to near cat-tastrophe in this hiss-terical rom-com! From the author of The Wife Comes Qi Wei Shang, also available from Seven Seas.In his former life, Mo Tianliao was a feared demonic cultivator, renowned for forging spiritual weapons of devastating power. But just as he was about to complete a weapon capable of destroying the world, the righteous sects banded together to take him down. Before his death, he managed one final act of Saving his beloved white kitten. Four hundred years later, Mo Tianliao awakens in the body of a divine tree--alive, but stripped of spiritual power. To survive in this new era, he must start over from scratch by joining a righteous sect as a humble disciple. His new master? Qingtong--a man of ethereal beauty and unmistakably feline mannerisms. And the more time Mo Tianliao spends with him, the more he begins to suspect that this aloof, elegant cultivator is not the stranger he pretends to be.
Since I liked The Wife Comes First, I started immediately another book by Lv Ye Qian He that has been recently published too. The White Cat's Divine Scratching Post is very different from the first book. It’s set in an ancient cultivation world instead of a historical setting, and has fantasy elements to it. But it’s equally delightful and a bit better even.
Mo Tianliao is a follower of the unorthodox cultivation path and a renown maker of artifacts, but now he’s made one that can destroy the world. So, the cultivation world has teamed up to kill him before he can complete the artifact. Mo Tianliao has one more ace in his sleeve, however, a trap that destroys everyone hunting him, including him. He only manages to save his spirit beast, Pawpaw, a little white cat who has been his sole companion for centuries.
He doesn’t completely die, however. To his surprise, he finds his spirit protected by a strange force, and so he wanders around the world for centuries in search for a body for himself. He tricks a divine tree into accepting him, and forges himself a body much like his old one of it, only he’s a little younger looking and without his previous cultivation level.
Since he needs to be strong in case his enemies are still around, he joins a remote sect to start training anew. It’s a curious sect though, that only accepts beautiful disciples. And no one is as beautiful as Qingtong, a divine looking master who chooses Mo Tianliao as his personal disciple, much to the other disciples’ dismay. Mo Tianliao is stronger than he looks though, with knowledge of his first life helping him. Which comes in handy, because his shizun’s teaching method is ‘figure it out yourself.’
To his absolute joy, Mo Tianliao finds Pawpaw there too. But he’s smaller than he should be for his age, and he’s always sleeping, which worries Mo Tianliao. The cat isn’t the only one worrying him. His shizun is also in poor health. As Mo Tianliao settles into his new life, he starts noticing curious things about the sect. And he starts noticing that his new shizun and Pawpaw share remarkable similarities.
This was a delightful start to a story. Because of the title, some comparisons has been made with The Husky and His White Cat Shizun by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou, but the similarities end with the title. This one is fairly cozy, the conflicts small and easily dealt with, and fight scenes are short, though there are actual casualties. Mo Tianliao, despite hailing from an unorthodox cultivation path, isn’t evil or in need of reconciling his past, and his love for his cat is absolute. Pawpaw is an actual cat, self-esteemed and with a tendency to scratch Mo Tianlio for slightest things, which the latter suffers calmly, and more easily now that he can turn parts of his body into a tree. Qingtong is exactly like a cat, capricious and a bit selfish, but affectionate in his own way. The main side characters are funny and all with a secret that I won’t reveal here, because it brought me so much joy.
The plot goes on in a steady pace and gives a notion that the original work wasn’t published as a web novel, because there are no side quests or unnecessary scenes, and the narrative doesn’t repeat itself. It’s not a highly emotional plot, although the romance starts budding here, but it has high stakes, because it turns out that the only way to heal Qingtong is by completing the artifact Mo Tianlio died for in the first place. I’m looking forward to reading how that turns out.
The characters are too cuteeee!!! I just feel like it could be better if there was more plot and backstory! Like I wanna know more about Mo Tianliao’s past and why he wanted to make a weapon that could destroy the world?? Like why did he decide it was worth getting killed over? I need ANSWERS.
4.75〜5 stars?? I enjoyed this so much more than I thought I would!! It was just so cute, yet also interesting. I cannot wait for more!! Absolutely adorable 🥰.
My Favorite Quotes:
★ Mo Tianliao slid down the trunk and pressed his face into the fist-sized hollow, the only safe spot in the valley. He had meant to leave his last will there, but it had ended up as the perfect place to leave his cat.
“It’s a good thing we haven’t signed a blood pact yet,” he whispered, planting a kiss on the furry head inside. “Take care of yourself when I’m gone. Don’t let anyone catch you… Learn how to catch fish on your own, and don’t get so caught up in playing that you skip meals…”
His nagging voice grew softer and softer. He had sustained a fatal injury three days ago, and it had finally become too much for him. Slowly, his eyes closed.
“Mew?” The white kitten patted his face, but the fool who always smiled and nuzzled him when he woke him up never opened his eyes.
The light dome overhead was drawing closer, and it wouldn’t be long before this silly fool would also be reduced to a bloody mist. The kitten anxiously pawed at Mo Tianliao’s nose; when he didn’t react, he tentatively leaned over and licked him.
Look, I’ve licked you. Stop pretending to sleep, or I’ll beat you up! Oi!🥺
But the affection it expected never came, only an increasingly blinding light.
Boom! A thunderous explosion rocked through the mountain, turning the entire valley into ruins. Rocks toppled. Grass burned to cinders. Severed limbs littered the ground, and blood flowed in rivers. Only a bare, stunted tree stood tall and untouched.
(…)
“Mew… mew…” The kitten’s tiny cries echoed across the empty valley for a long time, but the man who would always unashamedly lean in for a clawing was gone. 😭😭😭😭
★ “Pawpaw?” Mo Tianliao murmured in disbelief, and he was promptly rewarded with a swat from His Feline Lordship.
The cat despised this name. Every time he called him by it, he’d get swatted—no exceptions.
Mo Tianliao was beside himself with delight. He scooped the cat into his arms and buried his face in its fur, nuzzling vigorously. “Pawpaw! Pawpaw! It’s really you!”
“Meow!” His Feline Lordship instantly bristled with fury. Damn it! What do you think you’re doing?! How dare you nuzzle against your shizun’s belly fur! This is pure sacrilege!🤣🤣🤣
★ The spacious bedchamber was dark, although it didn’t affect Qingtong’s vision as he strolled over to the large, soft bed and sank into its embrace. He’d finally found his human; he could now sleep in peace.🥹
★ “Pawpaw, let me give you a bath,” Mo Tianliao said to the cat, pointing at the basin as he warmed the water.
The white cat looked at the simple basin, then at the gently smiling Mo Tianliao, and swished his tail. Well, considering you haven’t bathed me for such a long time, I shall grudgingly allow you to serve me today.
Having received His Feline Lordship’s consent, Mo Tianliao squatted down happily, lowered the cat into the water, and began washing his fur with practiced ease.
★ Dummy! Don’t you know you should cover yourself with a blanket when you’ve just exited a fire chamber? You don’t have fur to keep you warm. What if you catch a cold? Who’s going to warm my bed?!😆
★ Woodworker: I’m no longer human. How depressing.
Pawpaw: It’s all right. No matter what you become, you’re still the same in my heart.
Woodworker: *touched* What am I in your heart?
Pawpaw: A scratching post.
Woodworker: …That really doesn’t make me feel better. 😅🫠
★ The warm force that had shielded his divine soul; the perpetually sleepy Pawpaw; the master with a damaged divine soul—it all made sense now, and the realization made Mo Tianliao’s heart ache so much it was more than he could bear. Slowly, he leaned in and gingerly placed a gentle kiss on that smooth forehead.
“Don’t be afraid, Pawpaw. I’m here now. Sweet dreams.” 😩🥹
My literal only complaint is that I can recognize the world building is not that complicated, but I still feel confused about it. Otherwise it's such a good balance of sweet and sad and funny and cute.
Mo Tianliao is a master artificer who cultivated the demonic path. He cares only for two things: creating amazing spiritual devices, and his spirit beast cat, Pawpaw. However, when he's on the verge of creating a world-ending weapon, he's hunted down and killed by a group of powerful cultivators. His last act is to protect Pawpaw. But instead of disappearing completely, his soul is saved, and he manages to craft a new body after three hundred years using a divine tree. With his cultivation at zero, Mo Tianliao decides to join a sect and start over, and he manages to be accepted into the Woyun Sect, which is known for only accepting good-looking people. Not only that, he becomes the personal disciple of the beautiful and cold Qingtong, one of the three sect masters! As Mo Tianliao glides through the early cultivation level, he's reunited with his cat, Pawpaw. But something's amiss with the spirit beast, so Mo Tianliao decides to investigate. Curiously, his own shizun appears to suffer from a peculiar ailment of the soul. Could there be a coincidence? As the reincarnated artificer searches for a cure, he discovers his new sect is more fantastical than the rumors say, and his fellow cultivators aren't whom they seem -- especially his shizun.
I'm a sucker for danmei novels with shameless protagonists, so I enjoyed Mo Tianliao's character. Unfortunately, Qingtong was a little too aloof for my taste; the moments where he expressed true affection were few and far between (face-scratching didn't cut it for me), so it felt like he was keeping a wall up between himself and Mo Tianliao. Hopefully, their relationship thaws in subsequent volumes, because it doesn't work well if the protagonist has to carry the relationship.
The other secondary characters were interesting, especially their true natures, but the way they all cowered before Qingtong really undermined their strengths and personalities in general to the point that they started to blend together for me based on their cowed behaviors alone. It also might be due to the language barrier, but it was hard to get a grasp on their feelings towards Mo Tianliao, and the latter's interactions with his fellow sect members were too short to allow them to develop to anything beyond a surface-level acquaintanceship. Again, maybe that'll change in future books, but it failed to lay an emotional foundation for me.
The biggest drawback of this book is the lack of an interesting plot. In the beginning, it felt like there wasn't one! Mo Tianliao joins a sect. He gets to know the rules and some people. He begins to cultivate. He hangs out with his cat.... So, where is this going? It wasn't until the latter half that a more defined plot took place as Mo Tianliao connected some dots, but the whole "going off to find my super-weapon and use it to develop a cure for my cat" premise came off as both weak and lacking in excitement to me. It's basically a long, drawn-out treasure hunt. And, yes, there will be enemies along the way who want the prize for themselves, but again, that doesn't sound very interesting to me; it sounds like a series of battles interspersed with a series of auctions interspersed with Mo Tianliao and Qingtong spending time together and slowly growing closer. This first volume is a slow, casual read, and for those who like the master-disciple relationship trope where one is icy and the other goofy (think "The Husky and His White Cat Shizun"), this is right up your alley, but don't expect a fast pace. As for myself, I'm not inclined to continue this series unless the second volume sounds intriguing. So, not a bad book overall, just lacking in an interesting plot.
Um, I would do anything for His Feline Lordship???? I’m no better than Mo Tianliao. If the price for giving a pretty kitty a kiss on their forehead is a couple of claws to the face, so be it. They had their reasons.
EXCUSE ME—this is the most adorable little story????? I LOVED everything about it! I had so much fun reading this first volume.
This could easily be my most favorite danmei series. (Sorry “Legend of Exorcism”. This one has a cat.)
This story just does SO much for me.
Notably, this story features a really enjoyable dynamic between our main characters. I like that Qingtong and Mo Tianliao recognize each other right away and that this story does not drag on around a misunderstanding. They just pick up where they left off—and it’s SO clear how much the other was missed. I LOVED how Qingtong was like he could finally rest easy because “his human” was back. They are clearly compatible and seem to genuinely like each other.
Plus, they are both powerful in their own rights. So, there’s also a balanced power dynamic.
Also, Qingtong acting like a cat even in his human form was SO funny. Knocking stuff off of tables, sleeping where he pleases, sharpening his claws all over, chasing shiny things, not caring about anything else but his comfort—hilarious every time.
I also want to emphasize just how GORGEOUS the art in this story is???? Absolutely stunning.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND this story on every level! It is both entertaining and endearing. One of my new favorite danmei stories~
if i had a nickel for every white cat in danmei that split his soul for his beloved, i'd have two nickels. which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice
