I really enjoy books like this, especially crime and mystery with a danmei angle, so I went into this knowing it would probably be my kind of read. Volume one on its own barely feels like danmei yet since there is no real romance between the main characters at this point, but with priest, I am more than willing to be patient. What I appreciated most was how serious and grounded the story felt. It does not rush to entertain or comfort you. Instead, it asks you to pay attention, to sit with uncertainty, and to follow a case that unfolds slowly and sometimes uncomfortably. I liked that it trusted me as a reader and did not over explain or force momentum where it did not belong.
Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du were easily my favorite part. Luo Wenzhou feels sharp, stubborn, and deeply principled, the kind of character who hides concern behind sarcasm and constant motion. He feels lived in, shaped by responsibility and a refusal to look away when things get messy. Fei Du, on the other hand, is controlled, observant, and unsettlingly calm. There is emotional distance there, but not emptiness. What stood out most was how much tension they generate just by talking. Their conversations feel intentional and charged, full of irritation, awareness, and something unspoken that keeps pulling them back together.
This book is heavy and methodical, and I can see why some readers struggle with the pacing. Progress can feel slow, and there is very little emotional relief. Justice is not neat, and discomfort lingers. For me, that was part of the appeal. I enjoy crime fiction that focuses on consequences, ethical compromise, and the long shadow of decisions. This was a demanding read, but a rewarding one, and it left me confident that sticking with the series will be worth it.

Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du's bickering was so stupid I loved it, honestly it's what's helping me like their relationship and conversations. I also really liked the comparisons of Fei Du and Luo Yiguo with the one single reasoning: cat attitude. Unfortunately, I didn't really care for the story until it hit Chapter 15, because I really liked how Fei Du was in the main spot, having to help Luo Wenzhou and the woman. Which, he was mentally strong asf considering his phobia of blood but he still was able to go on until after backup arrived.
For some reason, Luo Wenzhou sure loved to say "daddy" because (for what I caught) he said it twice in this volume, for example:
(Chapter 12, and ironically, the scene from the interior art)
' "You know what, Daddy’s not going to stoop to the level of a brat like you. I asked you to stay for dinner out of pity.” Luo Wenzhou angrily pulled out a pair of disposable gloves. Think of it as feeding a cat, he told himself as he peeled the braised shrimp and filled a platter with the flesh. “Tao Ran spoiled you. By the way, why did you stay and talk to He Zhongyi’s mother for so long?”
Fei Du’s chopsticks paused. Then he decided to take some shrimp after all. '
(Chapter 21)
' “I’m terrified. Sounds like us poor peasants need to go borrow some money from Daddy Fei.” He blew a kiss at the man as he was stuffed into the police car. “Bye-bye.” '
This is just me being inlove with sherliam from Moriarty the Patriot, but this scene slightly reminded me of when they were talking on the train and Sherly was just pulling jokes of "accusations" but Liam and Louis didn't understand that until after Sherly laughed stupidly.
(Also, Chapter 21)
' Fei Du stopped. Having reached Luo Wenzhou’s side, he looked down, a sudden, cold smile on his lips and a hint of danger in his eyes. “And you suspect that it was me?”
Luo Wenzhou met his gaze, which always seemed slightly flirtatious. The kid really is easy on the eyes, he couldn’t help thinking. '

Finally a modern / no fantasy danmei!!
As a mystery and detective stories fan, loved this book and well the main characters "enemies" state of enmity make it chef kisss !!

I love it. Would love to say that I've gone through it in one sitting, sadly, I don't have enough time - but I would have!
The crime part is ok. Pretty similar to most of what I've read of "M/M Crime". Not amazing, it was a bit convoluted and chaotic. Investigators sometimes had very repetitive discussions that came to nothing. They behaved like they understood something and than a chapter later it's a question again. But there wasn't enough of this to hamper my enjoyment.
'Cause the characters are so yummy! Blustering and posturing Fei Du, all cool and clever in his glasses, who turns out real and warm, and "not a god" by the end. Luo Wenzhou seems simpler for now, but I really want to know how he turned from the brash young master into what he is today. And the fact that they have history, and a long record of treating each other like dicks. Tasty!

This was a strong first volume. Once I set my expectations accordingly and prepared for a story heavier on plot than romance, I appreciated how well plotted this is. The mystery is genuinely interesting, mostly wrapping up but leaving crumbs of a bigger mystery.
The characters are equally great. There may be no romance yet, but the dynamic between Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du is interesting and fun. Their chemistry may manifest right now as childish bickering, but it never ceases to entertain, and is setting a good foundation for their future.
I am very excited to read more.

Priest does such a good job with flawed, toxic, and deeply human characters. Fei Du, a young man who experienced the suicide (he believes it was murder) of his mother and the crippling of his father (who is now a vegetable), has a mind for crime. The story begins with a murder mystery, but despite Fei Du's expertise, Detective Luo Wenzhou is reluctant to request his help because he believes that Fei Du personally crippled his father.
It isn't until Fei Du goes out of his way to save the victim's mother, with a deeply personal story about how he feels betrayed by his mother's suicide, that Luo Wenzhou finally sees beyond the acerbic playboy exterior and past his own bias to apologize to Fei Du for his misconceptions.
They both have a sharp tongue, but somehow, they're evenly matched. In fact, perhaps it's because of the challenge and similar natures that they are especially contrary to each other. Despite this, they end the book on a relatively positive note. After Luo Wenzhou's apology, neither of them seems eager to rekindle their past hostility.
I really want to continue this series, but I promised myself I wouldn't buy any more books until I finished the ones I have, so the newest volumes of Joyful Reunion and Legend of Exorcism will have to be completed before I can continue. What a cruel predicament I find myself in.

amazing, everything was amazing! the first twenty percent of the book I’ll admit I was a bit confused and worried this wouldn’t live up to the hype or the expectations I set for priest after how amazing spl was but at the fifty percent mark when everything started to weave together and this mystery formed a clear shape in my head I realised she really wouldn’t let me down and by the last thirty percent I was floored. this was so worth the hype I’m excited for the next few volumes.
I can tell she’s setting up a much bigger story than is clear now and I can’t wait to see it unfold.
I love priest couples so much, luo wenzhou and fei du are going to be fascinating to follow. the chemistry and buzz that came at the last twenty percent was chef’s kiss.

It's not every day you come across a book that completely fails to accomplish everything it's set out to do. It fails to be an intriguing murder mystery. It fails to be a romance. I initially wanted to read this book because I enjoy murder mysteries, and I wanted a modern danmei. I wish I had spent my time reading something else. The characters are extremely flat. They're all very trope-y. Nothing new to read about. Maybe they all receive better development in the second novel, but I don't care enough to find out.
If you want a murder mystery danmei, go read The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (MDZS) instead.
As a side note: I'm not sure why including the r-slur was deemed important. I realize that translation teams wish to preserve original intent as much as possible, but do we really need to include a slur?

I’m more of a high fantasy/high concept girlie so I don’t usually read contemporary thriller/mystery danmei but this one has gotten so much hype that I finally caved—and, I’m glad I did?
I thought this was pretty gripping.
Romance aside, I wanted to know what happened and have the murder mystery here resolved. I enjoyed the “cat and mouse” aspect and the ample misdirection. Including the victim’s mother in the story also added a depth to the story I wasn’t anticipating and that I found rather moving, especially as we see Fei Du’s connection with her grow. It’s sad and sweet.
But, plot aside, is the central relationship any good?
To me, yeah? It grew on me, let’s say.
It’s a slight “enemies to lovers” + age gap joint with plenty of banter and chirping at each other. The dialogue was pretty fun, ngl. Also, the pair seem evenly matched when it comes to their actual conversations about the case and Fei Du’s mother. Beneath all of the cattiness and pettiness and bravado, there is a lovely, sweet and developing romance here.
So, I’d recommend this story so far.
It’s got a fairly compelling plot and central relationship. I’m interested in seeing where this goes. There’s also a cat who is very spoiled. A little something for everyone~

La primera vez que leo danmei, y es un género que me ha gustado bastante, a si que seguiré con el.
En este caso es de novela policiaca, me ha gustado muchísimo, lo único que demasiado slow la relación entre los protas. No hay nada de romance en este tomo, espero ver un pco más de la relación entre Fei Du y Lou en la segunda parte.
Y lo que me ha costado mucho de esta novela son los nombres, pfff, mucho nombre chino y muy parecidos, me estaba haciendo un cacao curioso.
Ya con ganas de leer la segunda parte, si te gustan las novelas policías y un slow super slowburn este es tu libro 💫.

*Cracks open a bottle of sparkling water.* Ahh so refreshing to revisit a work... i rarely get the luxury~ Anyways i read this one right after my mom finished it from my physical collection (ironically, because i owned a non-english copy beforehand yippee)
I didnt read this with both eyes, rather skimmed through it seeing all the key points unfold again, i cant tell you enough, how much enjoyment i had reading this Danmei. It is fair to say it will not appeal to many people, priest certainly has a certain way of writing that might be unappealing and detailed, dragging it into a somber and dark mood (My mom words haha~) But it is fair to criticize this aspect of it. the characters are strong and the dynamic between them is outstanding.

*Cracks open a bottle of sparkling water.* Ahh so refreshing to revisit a work... i rarely get the luxury~ Anyways i read this one right after my mom finished it from my physical collection (ironically, because i owned a non-english copy beforehand yippee)
I didnt read this with both eyes, rather skimmed through it seeing all the key points unfold again, i cant tell you enough, how much enjoyment i had reading this Danmei. It is fair to say it will not appeal to many people, priest certainly has a certain way of writing that might be unappealing and detailed, dragging it into a somber and dark mood (My mom words haha~) But it is fair to criticize this aspect of it. the characters are strong and the dynamic between them is outstanding.

Китайцы такие китайцы. Можно сразу сказать, что читаешь азиатскую литературу, хотя говорят, что менталитет - это придуманная вещь. Ни фига. Зацикленность на внешности и еде - это я еще в трилогии Crazy Rich Asians заметила.
Но мне на удивление понравилось. Хотя, возможно, я потеряла какую-то часть истории от того, что не читала Красное и черное.
Мне понравилось. Интересная история и довольно увлекательное расследование. Отношения между двумя детективами и Фэй Ду до конца не понятны. Так же как и ориентация капитана Ло. Все-таки довольно завуалированно они все подают, наверное, чтоб в случае чего можно было бы отвертеться. За расследованием интересно следить, хотя поведение и мысли героев и ставили местами в тупик.
Фэй Ду выступает тут в качестве неофициального консультанта, а команда капитана Ло умудряется расследовать параллельно несколько дел, которые, впочем, закучиваются в процессе в один клубок.
Это законченная история, несмотря на то, что, видимо, будет частью цикла. Но можно вполне себе взять читать и после нее не брать вторую часть. А можно взять.

I try to read most published danmei, but this book specifically stood out to me due to the cover art and the murder mystery plot line.
My initial impression of the book is that it’s written in a very different style than I expected. The mystery and inner workings of the police and their politics definitely take center stage in the story. To the point that I personally feel the main characters and their dynamics are a bit underdeveloped. I did enjoy the characters, the main lead especially, from what is shown of them. However, my connection to them feels a bit lacking.
If you want to pick up a novel that is very character-focused or relationship-focused, this is not it.
If you want a murder mystery, then it does definitely deliver on that front. It took me a bit to get interested in the mystery they were spinning, but that may have been due to me adjusting my expectations. Once I got a bit into the book, I found the plot pretty compelling and did enjoy it. The characters personalities in how they approached the investigation were quite interesting.
It is certainly one of the more plot-focused danmeis, especially at this point, where it is only the first book. That is something to keep in mind if you’re considering picking it up. However, I think the main characters have a lot of potential and an interesting relationship. I am looking forward to seeing how it develops in later volumes.
