Voices of Resistance

How music and poetry proclaim God’s justice and love.

Voices of Resistance invites you to discover the powerful ways music and poetry give voice to the hopes, struggles, and faith of God’s people across the ages. From ancient hymns of worship and lament to stirring proclamations of justice and love, this study uncovers how biblical songs continue to speak to us.

Through Deborah’s and Hannah’s songs, Mary’s Magnificat, the laments of Jeremiah, the Psalms, the Christ hymn in Philippians, and the visions of worship in Revelation, you will hear the voices of our ancestors in faith and consider how their witness still calls us to live with courage and compassion. With keen insights into biblical history and a progressive vision that explores the dynamics of race, gender, and marginalization, Voices of Resistance shows how this legacy of music, poetry, and community offers strength for the church and the world we seek to build today.

Other components of the study include a Leader Guide and video teaching sessions, making Voices of Resistance a rich and adaptable study for small groups, congregations, and personal reflection.

I loved this book and it's focus on song/poetry in the biblical text. It shed a lot of light on how song was used in various parts of the Bible. I have often read the Bible as prose when parts are clearly recorded lyrics of an ancient song. It is an important distinction that I have not always thought about in my personal biblical study. Also, I loved how this book often focused on women in the bible and women's leadership and musical contributions to worship. In my experience this is too often overlooked.

My group had a different person lead the discussion for each chapter. I had the final chapter, the music of revelation. That chapter was one of the best treatments of the final book of the Bible that I have come across.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed the focus on the impact of the women in the bible and how we are called to advocate those in marginalized communities. It was interesting to learn more context about the songs, hymns, and poetry in the bible.
