ARC Review: Behind every shadow, someone pulls the strings.

The chilling saga continues in The House of Red Strings, the gripping second installment in S.K. Winters’ Broken Faces Trilogy. This dark psychological thriller plunges you deeper into the shattered mind of FBI agent Nora Quinn. After narrowly escaping the horrors of the Dollmaker, Nora believed she had left her nightmare behind. But the sinister confines of the House of Red Strings have other plans.

Set inside the deserted walls of an abandoned theater, shadows whisper, puppets sway on unseen wires, setting the stage for a twisted performance. The elusive Stagehand—masked, ruthless, and meticulous—knows precisely how to draw Nora into a show she never auditioned for. Each room she explores whispers secrets soaked in memories, madness, and guilt. Every crimson string tugs her closer to a buried truth she’s desperately tried to forget—one that refuses to stay hidden.

When Emilia is kidnapped and trapped within the House, Nora must return to the stage once more. But this rescue mission is no ordinary operation; it’s a carefully crafted symphony of control and chaos, designed precisely for her. The air is thick with the sweet, decaying scent of orange blossoms—once comforting, now a haunting omen. In the distance, the eerie melody of “London Bridge is Falling Down” warps into a lullaby of terror.

“Dolls die perfect. Puppets die flawed. That’s the lesson. Never forget.” These haunting words echo in Nora’s mind as she ventures deeper into the theater’s labyrinth. A stark reminder that perfection demands a heavy toll and that someone is always pulling the strings behind the scenes. The production seems flawless, perfectly timed, as if each act is written in Nora’s own blood. But as the final curtain nears, a disturbing question lingers: Is the Stagehand working alone, or is an even darker force controlling the shadows from behind the curtain?

And amid the shadows, the whisper persists: “The Dollmaker’s eyes never close.” This revelation shatters everything Nora believed about survival, obsession, and control. Nothing in the House is as it appears. Every decision is a trap, each act a rehearsal for chaos, and the climactic final line—the one that seals someone’s fate—belongs to a malevolent puppeteer.

S.K. Winters weaves horror, psychological suspense, and tragic beauty into a story that sears its way under your skin. The House of Red Strings. It’s a haunting exploration of fear, control, and performance—threaded with dread until you can’t tell who’s really pulling the strings.

Dark, addictive, and brilliantly suspenseful, this novel redefines what it means to perform and to punish. When the curtain finally falls, you’ll be left breathless, questioning who was truly directing the show all along.

This is book 2, after The Dollmaker’s Eyes. In the first book FBI agent Nora Quinn was following the Dollmaker. The girls would be killed and posed like a doll. They used makeup and gold thread to keep their eyes open. Nora realizes that each of the victims resembled a girl that she couldn’t save before. This became personal. After she survives the Dollmaker, they draw her into another cruel game in the House of Red Strings. Everything is set up personally for her and she has to face all of it to survive. I couldn’t put it down. I received an ARC copy from the author, and this is my honest review.

Book 2 of the Broken Faces Trilogy is even creepier than the first book.

We’re back with Nora again, our intrepid FBI agent. This time, her opponent is The Stagehand—a man who wears a cracked mask and loves to play with red string. Every chapter dealing with Stagehand goes back to an orphanage. Once again, there are twists and subplots galore. The writing style fits the psychological thriller genre so well. I can’t wait to see how S.K. Winters ends the trilogy!

The twist and turns are so unexpected they're literally shocking and the stage with all it's strings gives you a eerie feeling as you wait and worrying about Nora. The song imprints in your mind and it has you hearing it over and over again long after this book is done. It's a chilling thriller alright goosebumps and all.

I just don’t have the words to describe how positively mind numbing this book was. Holy moly…I thought book one was intense, this one took it to a whole other level. So many more secrets revealed but WOW so much yet to come. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book provided by booksprout.

I felt this book was very well written. As in the first book, I truly enjoyed looking into the villain’s point of view. I felt it gave the story more depth, and it made the storyline a little harder to figure out. This story was impossible to put down.

The suspense continues in this book. It is like looking into the mind of a severely disturbed individual.
