EXCERPT: Claire missed her kids and daily motherhood, but she yearned for so much more - peace of mind and relief from the hurt she nourished as a prize possession.
Would she like it here in Walters Bluff? Was it a good idea to move? Yes. It had to be. When Will's old friend asked him to apply for this position, Claire encouraged him to do so. She wanted to escape the weight of constant reminders, pity, and judgement. Will was ready for a slower pace. Yes, it was a good move at precisely the right time
But this was an enormous change.
Tears filled her eyes. Through the blur, a goldfinch jumped from branch to branch. One more jump, and it flew away - much like her kids, her parents, her faith in the church . . . and in the God she thought she knew.
The ocean of grief has a wicked undertow, but this morning, Claire wrestled herself from its grip. She dried her tears. Today was the first day of a new life.

ABOUT 'THE GRACE WRITERS': Everything Claire believed about Christians was shattered when her parents died on a cool autumn evening.

But just when things seem to be falling into place, tragedy strikes again, threatening to undo it all. Can Claire and the people of Walters Bluff withstand the weight of fresh grief, old wounds, and painful truths?

MY THOUGHTS: Reading The Grace Writers was like sitting in a spa pool - warm and comforting but also invigorating and uplifting. It is a book about grief, love, forgiveness and friendship that had me smiling throughout. The author's words drew me in and made me feel part of the story.

Heather Morse Alexander has taken some tough topics and, treating them with great sensitivity, has shown the reader that there IS a path through and a welcoming light at the end of the tunnel. There are a lot of life lessons in this book, beautifully woven into the story of a woman drowning in the throes of immense grief and resentment.

There are a few bible quotes and hymn lyrics included in the text but, other than that, it's not an overly preachy book. It is, however, filled with hope, comfort and inspiration.

A lovely, lovely read.

Please do read the authors notes at the end.

A great reminder of the power of forgiveness, and how it can release burdens we really don't need to carry, as well as help us move forward in our grief. When we're convicted in the right way, it helps us to really step back and look at ourselves and the things we need to let go of.

I loved the family and community support that Will and Claire built in the new area they moved to. It was just what Claire needed to help restore her faith in God and move forward with her life after the devastating loss of her parents.

This is a good book, with great reminders of God's love and faithfulness, and a few scriptures sprinkled in. There were a few predictable moments, but the book was filled with tears, laughter and growth for all of the characters.

This is a clean, wholesome book that I would recommend to most anyone, but especially those struggling with grief and unforgiveness.

This reads like a warm cup of tea to soothe the soul. Despite The Grace Writers circling around grief, it’s a journey through forgiveness, friendships and new beginnings. Stories within stories.

Although I’m not religious, it was nice to read the characters journeys through faith in hardships and how powerful and important forgiveness and grace is in our world. I’m grateful to have read it and as an ARC through Net Galley. Thank you.

If you have any interest in writing, this may help spark your own stories.

My Thoughts:
This story punched me in the gut a few times and convicted me in others. It was written well and I am glad I read it. The loss of anyone you love is hard, but when it's a parent in such a way, it really hits different. I think the themes explored were handled well and sensitively. The faith aspect was really good too, a little chessy at times but not over the top as can be seen I'm Christian fiction. Overall, really good story and I enjoyed my time with it. Losing a parent is very hard, I've lost both parents and I'm still trying to deal with the grief and emptiness.

While "church writing groups" might sound like a modern hobby, they are rooted in a centuries-old tradition of communal literacy and spiritual reflection.

A Brief History
Historically, writing within the church was the domain of monastics—monks and nuns meticulously transcribing scripture and recording histories. However, the 20th century saw a shift toward layperson participation. Following the rise of the "Inklings" (the famous Oxford group including C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien), many churches began viewing creative writing not just as a scholarly pursuit but as a form of communal devotion. By the 1980s and 90s, the "Writing as a Spiritual Practice" movement solidified these groups as staples in local parishes.

What They Represent
To the Individual: These groups offer a "sacred third space" between work and home. They represent a safe harbour for vulnerability, allowing members to process grief, doubt, and joy through the written word.
To the Community: They act as a living archive. By documenting local testimonies and personal histories, they preserve the collective memory of the congregation.

Core Themes & Topics
Church writing groups rarely stick to "religious" topics alone. They explore the intersection of the mundane and the divine:
Lament and Healing: Processing personal loss or societal injustice.
Ecopoetics: Finding spiritual significance in nature and stewardship.
Theology of the Ordinary: Finding "God in the dishes"—writing about the beauty in daily chores and routine.
Memoir: Crafting legacies for the next generation.
Liturgical Writing: Composing prayers, poems, or reflections used in Sunday services.

Why It Matters
These groups transform the act of writing from a solitary struggle into a collective ritual. They democratise "The Word," proving that everyone has a story worth telling. They represent the belief that expression is a form of worship and that listening to a neighbour’s story is a profound act of love.

The beautiful fellowship within The Grace Writers by Heather Morse Alexander has made me desire a writing ministry for our small community.

Grief is a hard word to describe, but The Grace Writers take hard topics such as grief, loss, death, divorce, unforgiveness, and more. Within the pages of this beautiful novel, we see perspectives from various angles. Within the pages of this beautiful novel, we see characters that each of us can relate to. Within the pages of this beautiful novel, Jesus Christ is magnified from the beginning until the very last page.

Heather Morse Alexander has created a beauty tapestry that weaves the truth of the Gospel throughout various lives. Her stories connect the reader to characters that make us laugh and cry. We see the unbeliever, the backslider, the faithful, and the legalistic. We see the bitterness, jealousy, envy, and idolatry we all fall into. We see the forgiveness, grace, and mercy that are constantly accessible to us through our God.

This book was such a timely gift to me. During the time of reading this, I found myself heavily convicted that I also had some previous hurts that I needed to apologize for as well. I'm thankful for the conviction and the restoration of the Lord's working hand.

This book is out now, so please go READ it! This is going on my favorites list for sure!

I thank Net Galley and the publishers for an ARC of this book. My review is 100% my own opinion.

This story was absolutely beautiful from start to finish. The Grace Writers captured my heart in the sweetest way. I loved everything about it — the small-town setting, the meaningful friendships, and especially the incredible characters. Claire and Will completely won me over. Watching their growth, their courage, and the way they both learned to open their hearts again was so touching. It felt like I truly knew them.

I adored the sense of community in this story — that feeling of neighbors becoming family, and how even through heartbreak and change, people can come together to love, support, and lift one another up. It made me wish I could pack up and move to that little town myself!

Heather Morse Alexander’s writing was warm and inviting, filled with emotion and wisdom. Every page held a reminder of how short and precious life is, and how important it is to chase the things that matter most — love, purpose, and grace. The story left me smiling, teary-eyed, and full of hope.

If you love heartfelt, uplifting stories about second chances, faith, and community, this is one you won’t want to miss. The Grace Writers is a gentle reminder that it’s never too late to write a new chapter.

This novel has it all. I laughed out loud and cried my eyes out. Heather Morse Alexander did a wonderful job of demonstrating the freedom and peace that comes from forgiveness, not just the forgiveness given freely from God, but also the forgiveness we give others and ourselves for the wrongs that we experience in our lives. I also really enjoyed the friendships among the women of the Grace Writers and among the men whose characters so richly bring the story to life. This is a an uplifting story that brings focus to God’s grace and the very human struggles we all experience as we strive to live a faithful life. I thoroughly enjoyed The Grace Writers and look forward to another trip to Walter’s Bluff.

Claire is questioning her faith and feeling like no one is in her corner, other than her nuclear family. Will takes a job as police chief in a small, close-knit town. The Grace Writers by Heather Morse Alexander is a heartfelt story about grief, faith, and finding hope in unexpected places.

Claire’s journey after the loss of her parents was emotional and honest, and I really appreciated how the story showed her wrestling with doubt, pain, and healing. The writing group was such a meaningful part of the novel, and I loved how it became a place of comfort, friendship, and new beginnings. The small-town setting of Walters Bluff made the story feel especially warm and personal.

This is a beautiful, reflective novel that stays with you after the final page. I’m very grateful I had the chance to read it early.

When Claire experiences an unimaginable tragedy, she finds herself distancing herself from the church after her experiences post-tragedy. After she and her husband relocate, they find themselves being invited to a church at the center of town that has a writing group. Although hesitant, Claire finds herself meeting a cast of wonderful side characters and in the midst, wrestling with some really powerful emotions. I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but it was so powerful. 4.5/5 stars! *I received a complimentary e-ARC from the author/publishing company via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. A beautiful and poignant story of faith, acceptance, a sense of belonging and forgiveness that will pull at your heart strings and inspire you.

I had a hard time putting this down once I got started and finished it in just a couple days. It is books of faith that help me keep going when times get rough and with wholesome characters to lean on as they did in this story. I highly recommend this book and very happy I had the chance to check this out

When tragedy strikes Claire and her family, her faith in Christians is tested. Everything she believed a church should be is demolished. When she and her husband relocate and begin in another church, Claire's husband encourages her to join a writing group at the church. Through friendship and support, Claire begins to heal and find her way. When tragedy strikes for a second time, will she be able to survive to the other side?
Friendships and support go a long way in healing. I liked the characters and the story. I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.

I love how the writer's words drew me in and let me become part of the story, part of the Grace Writers. So many of us have experienced hurt in church and it's not an easy thing to talk about. Walking with Claire as she struggles with it privately and then with those she felt safe sharing her sorrow reminds us God hears our prayers and knows our pains and will bring those onto our lives who can help us heal those hurts.

And if there was ever a group of friends who have more stories to share, it's the Grace Writers. Can't wait for the next book !

The Grace Writers by Heather Morse Alexander is a book that has deeply touched and inspired me. Its publication date is October 6, 2025 and it couldn’t have come at a better time!
Thank you to Netgallery and St. Helens Press for the gifted advance copy of this book. All views and opinions are my own.

Claire, a mother of three children, has been left broken and in a depression after the loss of her parents in a drunk driving accident during her first time living as an “empty nester.” Not only that, but the drunk driver that murdered her parents was her Church’s deacon. Despite having devoted her life to her church, no one in her community comforts or supports her; instead, they criticize her for wanting justice and demonize her for not forgiving the deacon and “moving on.”

This changes Claire’s position on religious communities, viewing them as filled with judgmental and self-serving people who protect and perform cover-ups for church leaders to maintain their good image. I found this premise a very relatable one, as this is a very common situation experienced as we grow up and turn away from certain communities when we see the reality of injustice, favouritism, selfishness, and even crimes happening within them.

Desperate for a fresh start, Claire and her husband move to a smaller town called Walters Bluff. Here, her neighbours are friendly and welcoming of her, but she is skeptical about their true intentions and characters after her recent traumatic experience of loss and grief.

Upon her husband’s encouragement, Claire attends a local women’s circle that is also a writer’s group. At first, she is hesitant, but she slowly opens up to the other members and finds herself surrounded by women who genuinely care for and support her. It is beautiful to watch Claire re-discover herself through a healthy community of women maintained by the beneficial nature of storytelling and writing.

However, another crisis hits Claire when something devastating happens in Walters Bluff. How will Claire handle yet another traumatic event? How is it even possible to maintain hope and faith when thrown one curveball after another?

What I appreciate about this book is it doesn’t focus on preaching or religious doctrine, its focus is on female friendships, the art and therapeutic power of writing and literature, and the love and faith that is re-ignited through giving and supporting one other through storytelling. This book is one of those necessary ones to read as a reminder that there are genuinely good, healthy friendships in the world and to never lose hope. The grief and pain we experience in life can never be erased, but it can be eased and alleviated by the friendships and community with which we surround ourselves. One of the most beautiful aspects about this book is its illustration of the true power of writing to form healthy communities and to spark healing and re-building of our own selves.

Grace Writers shares the story of Claire and Will and the people they meet when they move to a new town after a terrible tragedy. Claire's story reaches into the depths of grief as she navigates the difficult path of forgiveness, when the person responsible for her grief doesn't seek forgiveness. I have to say, this book is a beautiful story of faith, growth, compassion, and the many layers of church folks. If you're looking for a read that will make you think and help you grow as a believer, this is an excellent story. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and rejoice with these vulnerable and sometimes hilarious characters. At first, I thought this would be a warm hug, but what it turned out to be is an awakening to live life and embrace grace. I received a free copy, and opinions are my own.

The first chapter immediately hooked me. I loved how we saw not only our main character grow, but also our side characters as well. I also loved the little snippets of the side characters' point of view that we got. It really helped make the story feel real. The Grace Writers is a story about forgiveness. It has some heavy themes, but the overall theme is peace through forgiveness as Jesus forgave us. We see one character completely change after giving their life to Jesus when they are forgiven for a terrible wrong they committed. We see another character learn to forgive themselves. The main character learns to forgive the person who had wronged them. Through all this forgiveness we see peace and happiness which would not have been possible without the love and sacrifice of Jesus.
