Olivia is a high born fae woman who has more or less been sold to an asshole. She can’t bear the thought of marrying him and staying in that life though, so she runs, pretends to be a man. And joins The Reapers - a male only pack of bounty hunters.

But who should she encounter on her first day? Well, the boy who broke her heart seven years ago of course! Because obviously he joined The Reapers after he left her behind.

Oh Dimitry. He genuinely not only believed he wasn’t good, but he thought he wasn’t good 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 for her too. And Olivia had been so sheltered and naive, but so broken by Dimitry’s abandonment that she doesn’t really know how to handle having him back in her life again.

In what I’ve decided is Haven Price’s signature move, she lulls you into letting your guard down before hitting you with a surprise one-two punch. Right in the face. Well played, madam, well played.

And what’s that, I hear you ask? What do I mean when I say my dog is a whole ass character in this book? Well, the lovely Haven was looking for a name for a fleeting, one scene character. I suggested Roman after my dog, Haven liked it, and Roman’s character just kept wanting to be in more scenes! And if that isn’t enough reason to read this book then I don’t know what is 🤣

✨ Book Review: In the Absence of Light (Errant Reapers #2) by Haven Price

A huge thank you to the author, Haven Price, for providing me with an eARC (Advanced Reader Copy) of this book.

An Urban Fantasy Sequel That Hits the Emotional Mark
Haven Price has delivered a gripping follow-up with In the Absence of Light, the second book in the Errant Reapers series. While I enjoyed the first installment, this sequel truly excels, deepening the world, raising the stakes, and delivering a richly earned second-chance romance. If you're a fan of tenacious heroines, morally gray heroes who will burn the world down for love, and are looking for a new urban fantasy series, this is one you need on your radar.

💖 Identity, Destiny, and the Reaper's Vow
We are immediately drawn into Olivia’s desperate situation. Facing an arranged marriage that threatens her freedom, she takes the ultimate risk: disguising herself as a man and swearing the sacred oath to join the Errant Reapers, a mysterious brotherhood of fae bounty hunters where no one will ever look for her.

The tension is perfectly executed when a single, coded word—"Daffodil"—threatens to unravel her entire facade. It belongs to Dimitry, the boy who broke her heart seven years ago, the boy who fled without a word, and the man who is now her fellow Reaper.

Dimitry's history is just as compelling; cursed with uncontrollable magic, he left Olivia to protect her, only to be saved by the very brotherhood she now seeks refuge in. Years apart haven't buried their feelings, and the struggle between Olivia's fight for independence and Dimitry's desire to bridge the gap between them forms a captivating emotional core. Can she trust him with her life when her heart is still in pieces?

🌎 Expanded World-Building and Beloved Characters
What made this book stand out was the strength of the continuing world-building. Price expertly weaves in more details about the secretive Reapers while offering fascinating glimpses into how the fae operate in our modern world. It gives the series a great sense of scope and reality.
I loved getting to see the dynamic between Olivia and Dimitry; they are both complex characters with darkness and light. Plus, seeing the previous couple mentioned added a nice touch of continuity and connection within the series. I typically don't read much urban fantasy, but this series has completely hooked me, and I will absolutely be continuing.

In the Absence of Light is perfect for fans of Shannon Mayer and Laura Thalassa. It’s a compelling tale of survival, hidden identity, and the relentless power of a love that was always meant to be.

okay so wow this book was a lot of emotions. i really don’t even know how i feel about it. at first i thought this was gonna be a five star read for me, and i really wanted it to be, however throughout the story there were little things that would bother me and slowly my rating slipped. anyways, on a more positive note, this was a very beautiful story, i loved the element of magic it had to it, it helped me realise that i should be reading more fantasy! i gotta say aiden was one of THE best side characters ever, he may be the only character in this book i shed tears for. i thought that dimitry & olivia had such a cute love story to them and every romantic scene they had together had me smiling. im very glad i read this book & i thought it was great!

In the Absence of Light by Haven Price is the second book in the Errant Reapers series, an urban fantasy novel.
It’s giving ACOTAR meets Xaden Riorson from Fourth Wing, shadow daddy vibes and Mulan, I’m all for it.
I started this before going to bed telling myself I’d only read a few chapters then all of a sudden I’m 30+ chapters in and forcing myself to put my phone down so I get some sort of sleep before bed. In a lack of better words, I ate this book tf up.

In the Absence of Light dives deeper into the world building that started in the first book. We learn more of the details on how the Reapers operate while offering glimpses of how the Fae live and hide amongst the humans.

Olivia is a high fae who found that her only solution to escaping her arranged marriage was to join The Reapers, a secret men only bounty hunter group. Olivia Mulan-ed her way through initiation and had to try and blend in with the brotherhood. I personally loved that Olivia was delicate, she was very sheltered growing up so it only made sense that she had no idea how to fight let alone anything about the real world. Olivia’s fight for independence was inspiring and I loved watching her character grow into something strong and confident.
Dimitri is your typical shadow daddy, strong, hot, absolutely fearless and has everyone bowing down to him. It only makes sense that he has a soft spot for one person and one person only, Olivia. I am very curious to see what exactly Dimitri’s powers are and if they really do stem into something ancient and powerful.
I would also like to add that I absolutely loved every one of the characters in the brotherhood, although some comments made at the start when they found out Olivia was actually a woman was absolutely disgusting, it was very heartwarming to see them all look at her as though she is their little sister that needs protecting and will do anything to keep her self.

I loved the dynamic between Olivia and Dimitri, the second chance romance was absolutely heart wrenching and was definitely an emotional rollercoaster. I also love the code word ‘daffodil’ I think it is so sweet and meaningful.

In the Absence of Light is perfect for the fans of touch her and die, second chance romance, hidden identity and anything fantasy and shadow daddy coded. I absolutely loved this book and will definitely be following along for the rest of the series.

Thank you Haven Price for the opportunity to read the E-ARC copy of In the Absence of Light. All thoughts and reviews are of my own.

Ahhh I need more of Dimitry’s story! This was so fantastic, I loved learning more about him, this is book 2 in the series but is fine as a stand alone. We met him in book 1 which was Milo’s story, but absolutely not necessary to have read bc they just vaguely mention Milo and his story here and they give you any of the other details you might need in this story. It was a great story where we learned more about Dimitry (who we were introduced to in book 1) and his powers and his role as a Reaper and we met Livvy (Olivia) and more about the Fae in this world. Haven leaves you wanting more about the Reapers, the world, Soren and Dimitry as well. You’re also heartbroken for his other best friend. Olivia enters the book with a hidden identity because she is running from a forced engagement and only one person knows her secrets and she hasn’t seen him for 7 years, of course he would be a member of the secret bounty hunter group. But he has secrets of his own, she thought he had no powers…. Turns out he was lying all along. This was for sure a touch her and die story but Livvy also gets to find herself and learn she’s stronger than she thought she was and she is capable of more. That was great to see. Where Dimitry is darkness and terror, Livvy is sunshine and light… of course the opposites will attract, but will they destroy each other or be each other’s salvation? I love Fae stories and I really appreciate when they have old lore and new lore mixed in and they are show they have dark sides too. Malachi and the magicians was another good introduction and spin, I could’ve done with more information there too.. we got enough for the story but looks like I’m going to have to go read the Vivian Foxworthy series Haven rights bc that’s the Magician’s side. I literally could live in this world. So I’m hoping we get a lot more of it. I would love to know about Faeside, more of the Reapers stories, some of the courts, even the favorite bartender. The story carries itself, there is spice, but it’s not the main point. Fae bounty hunters was a genre that Haven has made one of my favorites- or maybe it’s just her Errant Reapers…. Thank you for letting me ARC this one too.

Thank you to Haven Price for an Arc, all opinions are my own.

This is book 2 in the Errant Reapers series, but you don't need to have read book 1 to dive straight in. This is a series of standalones in an interconnected world, so each book has it's own resolution and HEA for those main characters by the end. In the Absence of Light is a fun, fast read and a good one for when you need something lighter.

The fantasy world-building is definitely more developed in this book versus book 1, A Name in the Embers. It's interesting to get more insights into the Fae, especially the variety of powers and magic systems. The story is still very skewed towards the romance rather than fantasy plots, but I think this could fairly be called an urban fantasy. We also do get some darker themes and tropes, which I really enjoyed. Welcome to the chat, shadow daddy Dimitry! Don't worry though, the overall story remains a lighter read.

We get a second chance romance between estranged childhood friends, Dimitry and Livvy, with flavours of fated mates that is so prominent in Romantasy. Fans of more contemporary romance would still enjoy this book, I think, because the fantasy elements are lighter touch and grounded in a contemporary setting. The romance is very sweet, we don't get a huge amount of angst and actually see two characters *gasp* communicate about their issues instead of falling into the dreaded miscommunication trope.

Character development isn't overly deep, but we do see development arcs especially for Livvy. We also get a great found family story, which is one of my favourite tropes. It's fun to see mixed gender friendships, especially between straight characters, done is a way that feels genuine without devolving into a love triangle situation. I do wish we had more female friendships on the page, but the lack of other women in the story does make narrative sense.

Tropes:
🔹Urban fantasy with a contemporary setting
🔹Second chance romance
🔹Shadow daddy
🔹Found family
🔹Fated mates
🔹Deliciously punchable villain(s)

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars

From the book synopsis:
“Disguise herself. Find the bounty hunters. Take the vows.

The Errant Reapers are where the fae end up when there is nowhere left to go. When an arranged marriage threatens her freedom, Olivia knows that the brotherhood of bounty hunters is the one place no one will ever look for her. Disguised as a man, she swears their oath and joins their ranks with a simple goal: survive and keep her identity hidden.

A single word threatens to unravel it all: Daffodil.
It’s a code, one she shared with the boy who broke her heart seven years ago.
He never said goodbye, never returned. And now he’s here.”

This was such an addictive, cosy, curl-up-and-read-in-one-sitting kind of story for me - I literally read it in a day wrapped in a blanket with a coffee. It’s very easy to sink into, with great pacing and really clear emotional arcs.

I loved Olivia’s growth as she steps into her own agency, and the way Dimitry’s harder, shadowed edges soften as the story unfolds. The dynamic between them is layered with history, longing, and trust-building rather than instant reunion - which I loved.

The last third of the book is where most of the action happens, and it’s tense, emotional and exciting. I always felt this was building towards a HEA, so I didn’t worry too much - but I still felt the stakes as things unfolded.

The found family vibes of the Errant Reapers continue to be one of my favourite parts of this series, and I really enjoyed the side characters - especially Aiden and Soren. Now that I’ve read both books in the series, my guess is that one of them might be the MMC in book three… but who knows. I’d happily read either of their stories.

Warm, emotional, well-paced fantasy romance with fae in a modern-world setting - highly recommend.

Arc Review

In the Absence of Light 🕯️ by @havenpriceauthor

Thanks you for the e arc, for an honest review.

Okay, Daffodils are one of my favourite flower ( plant ) and I really loved how you used it in this book as a place of truth, safety and complete honesty between Olivia and Dimitry.

Olivia whom grew up in high Fae but always felt out of place, unloved and entrapped. But the one person who she loved completely was Dimitry but he left ( even if he thought it was for her own good ).

I get what she means when people decides what's best for her. Not letting HER decides, what good for her or her life.

With her journey in this, I was rooting for her all the way. Coming into her own, finding Dimitry again, but also her place in this world which can be ugly, traumatic and everything. She has found her reason to live, her friends. The person she is meant to be with a few hard trials and tribulations she had to get through.

And I feel completely Dimitry, darn I was accept him and all his darkness. Livvy brings the comfort touch of light to his darkness but he lights up her world. Physically and emotionally. If you know, I know. They have that spark, that love even if years buried, one that and it comes undone. I really also love the brother forms from all the reapers and their protective. So much laughter, and good time with the hard times.

I'm so curious 🧐 about Soren

Aiden, again my heart bleeds for you and I can't wait for your happy ending 💝 💝... You are a grumpy but caring person.

“Freedom always costs something—and Olivia is willing to pay it in blood and secrets.”

Haven Price delivers a breathtaking fantasy in this second installment of “The Errant Reapers” series. This tale blends danger, deception, and identity into an unforgettable story.

In the Absence of Light follows Olivia, a young woman trapped in an arranged marriage who chooses defiance over submission. Her escape leads her into a mysterious brotherhood of bounty hunters—the last place she hopes anyone would think to find her. Olivia wields secrets like a weapon to carve out her own destiny in a world that would rather see her silenced.

This book hooked me from the first chapter and didn’t let go. The tension of Olivia’s double life is constant and electric, balanced perfectly with moments of tenderness, angst, desperation, and introspection. I often wanted to leap into the pages to help these characters!

Price’s writing is vivid and cinematic, her world immersive without ever feeling heavy-handed. Each twist pulled me deeper, and the emotional payoff at the end felt both earned and empowering.

What truly shines is how In the Absence of Light explores themes of autonomy, identity, and sacrifice without losing its sense of adventure. Olivia isn’t just running from her past—she’s redefining what it means to be free.

If you love strong female leads, morally complex worlds, and fantasy stories that balance heart with grit, this one deserves a top spot on your shelf. I was privileged to receive this as an ARC, and it has left a wonderful impression on my heart!

✨ A five-star read for fans of dark adventure, hidden identities, and heroines who dare to rewrite their fate.

A morally grey MMC that wields shadows and a runaway elite society FMC collide in a bounty hunter camp where she has run to escape an arranged marriage. Haven Price has done it again. Book 1 of The Errant Reapers grabbed my attention, but book 2 kept it and pulled my obsession with these characters even deeper! Dimitry and Olivia’s second chance romance is a perfect easy read for a weekend. Aiden’s story 😭 got me in the feelings after getting over his crappy attitude and Soren’s mysterious background left me with so many questions that I can’t wait to get answers to. The side characters hold their own in this book and there are so many fun moments to counteract the tense scenes.

If you like fantasy romance or dark romance, then this book should be on your TBR. Dimitri faces off against an evil Magician (We don’t call them wizards…they don’t like it. 😂) and Olivia learns to embrace a life away from the glitz, glamour, and shallowness of high society as she finds her place in the bounty hunter’s camp. This book has a bit of everything!

Light vs. Dark
Touch her and die
Possession (but not the creepy kind)
Runaway fiancé
Second chance romance
Found family
One tent
Her first time spice

Quote:

“But if you hate me and never want to see me again, I’ll take you back to your apartment or camp—anywhere you want—and I’ll leave you alone. And if all you can offer me are scraps of your affection, then I’ll follow you like a dog. There has never been anyone else for me. It’s always been you. I will take whatever you’re willing to give me.”

I really enjoyed this book, I thought the storyline was gripping and the characters had some great tension and chemistry. I liked that we got more insight on some of the side characters in The Reapers compared to the first book, it was nice to have them brought to life.

I thought Olivia was a strong FMC, I liked that she had the strength to get out of her situation and try to start a new life for herself. I do think that we could’ve had more of a fight regarding her parents, it could’ve been made into a bigger plot point and would’ve made her point of running away hit harder.

Dimitry is a great character, he’s very mysterious but will do anything for the people he is close to. His powers are very unique, and I enjoyed learning how he uses them and how they were taken advantage of. His relationship with Olivia is basically touch her and die! He never got over her and left only for her safety.

I feel the plot regarding Malachi and Dimitry was a little hazy, we didn’t really learn that much about the magnitude of what was trying to be achieved. This could’ve been explored more in depth.

I also thought Soren’s vague information to Dimitry was very interesting and hopefully this will be built on in another book? It would be good to have a Soren book!

Overall, another brilliant addition to The Errant Reapers series, will definitely carry on this series and recommend it!

Thank you to Haven Price for the ARC, I have read this book voluntarily and this is my honest review.

This book was really good! I was captivated from the start with a (somewhat) annoying main character due to her pent up anger issues and I could tell she was was going to have a major character arc, and I was right. Some elements reminded me of Mulan (obviously) and I really enjoyed that factor! This book was engaging from the beginning and I loved the details about the more minor and side characters that made everything seem more realistic as opposed to it just being a story with two main characters and a bunch of one dimensional extras. I enjoyed the twists and turns that the plot took me on, and although some of it was a bit predictable when it came down to it, I was still so invested in the ride that I was happy to get into it! The character development from the different characters was arguably the best part of this book and really made the read worth it for me because I am a sucker for a well written character arc, which this book definitely gave me! The found family element was explored extremely well in this book and it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside as that is one of my all time favorite tropes in a novel. Now that I've read this book, I really want to get my hands on a copy of the first book in the series and I'm looking forward to seeing the series grow in the future!

eARC review

The second book in “The Errant Reapers” series. It’s said you can read them in any order, but considering that people from the first book are referred to and you get to know more about the history of the fae, I would still recommend you read them in order.

So, bounty hunters, drama, magic and love, there is not much more to ask for. I’m still a bit confused about how the fae keep (mostly) to themselves in the human world and how the societies are kept apart. I know there is magic but there are also a lot of unanswered questions. Some are slowly answered, some meant to be kept as mysteries revealed in future books. I don’t want to give things away with examples. I just feel like some information is missing for me to truly follow and be pulled into the story. It can be a mystery for the characters but for me as a reader, I would like some more information sometimes.

With that said, I still loved this book. The character development is better and their backstory connects and involves you more in this book. I like the way mystery is mixed with fantasy and romance in a quite mundane human world. It’s predictable sometimes but it’s still exciting and I will definitely be reading the next book.

Thank you Haven for the ARC opportunity!

•~• “If I weren't already in love with you, I would be now.” •~•

In the Absence of Light follows Olivia and Dimitry on their journey to reclaim control of her life for one and to find peace with his dark side for the other.

Trapped in an arranger marriage, Olivia escapes and, disguised as a man, joins the Errant Reapers, a brotherhood of bounty hunters. But little did she know Dimitry, the boy who broke her heart when he disappeared seven years ago, is a Reaper himself... and he recognises her, putting her secret at risk of being revealed.

I really liked this second instalment of the Errant Reapers series! Olivia is a resourceful, brave and persevering FMC. Dimitry is strong, mysterious and head over heels for her (and he reminds me of Cassian (ACOTAR) a little!)... and he trains her, we love this trope 🙈

The story was perfectly paced, a mix of action and slower moments, the writing very fluent and easy to read. The execution falls short sometimes and I would have love to explore Malachi and his plan in more details, but overall a nice cosy urban romantasy that can be read in one sitting.

Looking forward to the next book in this series!

Olivia has always felt trapped by her family, and an arranged marriage with another fae court is the final straw so she escapes to find her freedom where her family can't find her.. alongside a group of bounty hunters known as The Errant Reapers. After joining she bumps into an old friend, Dimitry. Their complicated pasts entwine and it leads to some precarious situations.

Having already read A Name in the Embers, I was excited for the second installment in this series and it didn't disappoint. This was a nice easy read, I really enjoy fantasies which cross over with the modern world as they make me feel like it is hiding in plain site. The little name drops of previous characters was cute but wouldn't stop your understanding if you hadn't read the first book.

The banter and friendships between the Reapers feels realistic and is both funny and heart warming. There are some great side characters so you don't feel too focussed on the two MCs. The romance and the spice also felt very realistically paced, and added to the storyline.

5 ⭐️ A story that grabbed my heart and refused to let go

In the Absence of Light took me through every emotion possible: joy, sadness, tension, a few very real tears… and then out of nowhere, it flips the table on you in the best way. Haven Price’s writing absolutely stunned me. There’s something so smooth, vivid, and emotional in her style that made slipping into the story effortless.

Olivia and Dimitry… oh my heart.
Their dynamic is layered, tender, wounded, and beautifully intense. Childhood best friends, shadow vs light, secret identity, touch-her-and-die energy, second chances!! This book had every trope I love and executed them so well that the characters felt real. Living-breathing real.

The worldbuilding and atmosphere were just as gripping. Contemporary fantasy with a twist that feels both grounded and magical, all wrapped in the tension of old love, old wounds, and the weight of unspoken truths.

If I had one complaint?
It’s that I read it too quickly, I genuinely wanted more pages, more moments, more everything.

This is a 5⭐️ read that pulled me in immediately and didn’t let go.
Warm, emotional, a little moody, and beautifully written: highly recommend!!

Ahh I loved this book it had me laughing and cracking up from the very beginning and it was such a nice little refresher. That’s not to say it didn’t have me shedding some tears either towards the end! First off Olivia and Dimitry their banter at the beginning and then just their story and history to begin with I loved it. We also love a good male who has a touch of a tortured soul and an interesting background as well that even he may not be aware of, which I’m going to be intrigued to see if we learn more about that in the future. Secondly who does not love Aiden he’s just a guys best friend but another poor tortured soul and ugh I hope one day he gets to be happy like his friends do, thirdly I know we got mentions of Milo here and there but ugh I would of loved to actually get to see him and his girl and I just hope we get to see them in the future! And Soren I actually love him he’s so mysterious and has to be the big bad leader but there’s a soft spot under there, and the way Olivia just stands up to him and doesn’t care I just love her so much for it. This was a great second book in the series and a quick read as well. Who does love a shadow wielding guy who will take some eyeballs for their girl? 🫣 go check it out.

ARC Review: I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Overall rating: 4 🌟
Genre: Romantasy
Release Date: 17/11/25 (out now)
Available on Kindle unlimited
Note: You don't have to read book 1 to read this but for the best reading experience, I'd recommend it.

I really enjoyed this. It was a quick, fast-paced read and I simply couldn't put it down. The was a lot going on plot wise and there were some great reveals. I loved the concept of the story, and I loved the second chance romance. I loved both of the main characters, they both had interesting character arcs and underwent a lot of development in the story. And the romance! So steamy, and I love the way the tension and chemistry between them was built. I liked the fact that we got an bigger expansion on the world-building (I still think there could be a little bit more detail) and we got more of an insight into characters like Aiden. If there's a third book, I hope it's about him.

All in all, a great read. This series is so underrated, more people need to read it. Thank you to the author for sending me this ARC.

Spinning off book 1, Olivia made it! Hold on to your hat, because this thing starts off Solemn, showing vulnerability and mystery, that takes you on a journey.

Under disguise making it into the brotherhood of bounty hunters, Olivia, hellbent as she is, paves the way for herself, until on day, one word could unravel it all. “Daffodil.” Dimitri a morally grey hero with secrets of his own. Is he her savior or her demise?

This cozy read, fuels high tensions and warring emotions, written so well it's like you're trapped in a never-ending soap opera with the characters - but hey, it’s very entertaining. The storyline is briskly paced with a intricate plot, distinguished by its unique style, and character development, adding subtle spicy undertones, all masterfully woven together to create a satisfying reading experience.

Wonderful second edition, although can be read as a standalone, has all the great tropes one enjoys in a fantasy read. This trio made for a great second chance, light and dark magic filled adventure.

Some stories don’t just tell a love story — they redefine it.

This book is about losing and finding each other, over and over again, only to fall deeper every time. It’s the kind of connection that feels written in the stars — fated, fierce, and devastatingly beautiful.

The idea of losing and finding each other, only to fall deeper every time, wrecked me in the best way. It’s that kind of love that burns and heals all at once — where light and darkness don’t cancel each other out, they complete one another.

She begins as a „princess“, soft and golden, and by the end she’s a warrior carved from light and shadow. And him… he’s every “touch her and die” fantasy wrapped in chaos and devotion — the dark to her light, the monster and the salvation all in onee and somehow, the only one who can make her whole.

Every page glows with passion and pain, power and surrender — two souls bound by fate, fighting the world and themselves just to find their way back to each other.

Olivia and Dimitry had such a compelling dynamic, and I genuinely loved them together. Their chemistry carries the story, and the glimpses we get into their emotional connection were some of my favorite parts.

That said, I found myself wanting more depth overall. A lot of the information, especially around Olivia’s parents, her ex-fiancé, and Dimitry’s personal struggles,
felt either rushed or not fully explored. I kept hoping for a bit more clarity or closure on those threads.

The world-building had great potential, but it stayed on the vague side. We don’t get much detail about the fae, their abilities, or the rules of the world, which left me wishing the lore had been expanded just a little more.

But that ending?? Super intriguing. It definitely hooked me enough that I’ll be continuing the series, hoping the next books dive deeper into the mythology and fill in some of those unanswered questions.

A solid read with a couple who shines, and a world I’d love to see explored more thoroughly in future installments.

I absolutely loved this book! The writing style felt very natural to me. Very easy read, flowed well, great pace. I read it in like 24 hours. Great chemistry with the characters. A bit of slow burn tension and enemies-to-lovers vibes to start out, and then things got good. They’re opposites with a rocky past to get through, while she trains and learns to embrace her powers. She’s escaping a sheltered life behind and starting out on her own. He’s trying to keep her safe and change his ways for her.

What to expect: Urban fantasy setting, enemies-to-lovers, protective MMC, opposites attract, shadow magic and light magic, second-chance romance.

What I loved: fast paced, easy read, flowed great, good chemistry, simple gradual world building, good friendships, witty banter.

Rating 5/5 ⭐️

I’ll preface this by saying this is book two of The Errant Reapers series and I have not read book one.

I feel like reading book one is important to the storyline however the author does an amazing job of filling blank spaces by not having read the first book and I was able to follow along quickly without feeling lost.

I really enjoyed the FMC and MMC their backstory is covered really well in this book and it’s a great second chance romance.

The MMC gives us touch her and 💀 moments and the MFC while growing up privileged has absolutely had her fair share of darkness and her light quite literally chases the shadows away.

I’m so intrigued by Soren and hope that the series continues so we can learn more about him.

It’s been a while since I visited Fae in a story so it was nice going back to a subject that has brought me much comfort over the years, the author has given so much in this book that hopefully will lend to many more in this series.

I could not put this down!
I will never see or hear the word "daffodil" the same again!!

This story is how the mate bond comes to force between Olivia and Dimitry. Olivia comes from a high fae family, where she is forced into a life she hates. And Dimitry doesn't know who his father is but his mother works in the estate. Olivia becomes a "reaper" (bounty hunter). And they get their second chance of love. It is in the POV of both MMC and FMC.

I loved how spice in the book was fairly early on. It wasn't a complete slow burn. Which is a nice switch up from regular fantasy books! Plus the amount and detail of the spice was very detailed. I do wish that there was a better character description!

Overall this was an amazing book to read! And I want to thank the author for taking the time to write such a masterpiece.

In the Absence of Light by Haven Price completely surprised me, in the best possible way. I went in expecting some kind of grand, sweeping epic, but what I got instead was something far better: a darkly cozy story (in the same way the first Deadpool movie is a romance).

This book follows two people who find each other, lose each other, and find their way back again, between bouts of chaos, violence, swearing, and just the right amount of spice. The writing is sharp, the banter is top-tier, and the characters feel real, flawed, funny, and full of heart.

And maybe my favorite part? It actually has an ending. No cliffhanger. No waiting a year for emotional closure. Just a gritty, satisfying story that sticks with you.

If you love found-family vibes wrapped in blood, banter, and redemption, this one’s absolutely worth the read.

In the Absence of Light by Haven Price is a thoughtfully written story that offers a clear and accessible reading experience. The book presents an engaging premise that will resonate with readers who appreciate straightforward storytelling and atmospheric worldbuilding. While the plot may feel familiar and the pacing gentler than some might expect, the writing carries a quiet strength through its sincerity and steady development. The characters show definite potential, and the narrative provides moments of reflection that add depth to the story. For those who enjoy a more subtle and contemplative fantasy, this book is a solid choice. It may not be the most fast-paced or complex, but its warmth and clarity offer a pleasant read. I appreciate the opportunity to explore Haven Price’s work and look forward to her future projects.

This deserves ALLLLL the stars. I literally didn’t put this down once I started it and ate the whole thing up in under five hours. Second chance romances are a favorite of mine but this one just hit different. Olivia taking a huge risk to join the Reapers to take her life back was such a power move and she was so amazing all the time. Dimitry was also everything you want in a book boyfriend. The yearning was absolute PERFECTION. I loved the way these two balanced each other out and the tension was freakin electric between them. The spice was all extra tasty and hot. The way Dimitry has no boundaries for how far he’s willing to go to protect Olivia was 100% swoon worthy. I loved how the other Reapers rallied to help however they could in dire times. Soren is super interesting and I would love to know more about him. Aiden also deserves to be happy, his story is so sad.

This was such a fun read for me, and it went deeper than I expected. Even though it’s the second book in the series, I never felt lost, the author does a great job weaving in the worldbuilding, especially when it comes to the fae existing alongside humans.

The pacing was engaging from start to finish, and I’m really glad I had the chance to read this ARC.

I loved watching Olivia and Dimitry’s relationship evolve throughout the story. Olivia’s growth, particularly her journey toward independence, was really satisfying, and Dimitry’s yearning for her—paired with his own dark secrets added a compelling layer of tension.

For readers who crave second-chance romance, a haunted and devoted MMC, dangerous secrets in a hidden fae world, and bounty-hunting tension, this book will hit every note.

First I want to say Thanks to Have for sending this to me as an ARC. I really enjoyed not having to wait as long.
Dimitri and Olivia are like star crossed lovers, they get a second chance at love and man it sure does take them awhile to figure out who they are together.
This story goes through Olivia trying to be a man in the Reapers and trying to become more herself and stronger than what she thought she could become.
Dimitry has a lot of baggage, a lot of other work. he has been with, some shadows, and a weird mark that leaves him not knowing what happened.
I enjoyed every bit of this book. Even though Olivia might have seemed a little sheltered or whiny at first she overcame that and became stronger and powerful.

In the Absence of Light completely hooked me. The push and pull between Dimitry and Olivia was so good — their chemistry, the tension, the way they both try to fight and give in at the same time… I couldn’t get enough.

The storyline just pulls you in and doesn’t let go. It’s one of those books you start and suddenly realize you’ve been reading for hours because you have to know what happens next. Definitely a super bingeable read.

I also really loved how, even though it’s centered on the couple, there are so many other characters who add so much to the story. Everyone felt important and added another layer to the plot.

Highly recommend if you love emotional, addictive reads with characters that stick with you.
