At Thornspire Manor, the most elite academy in the realms, Arkona has finally returned, not as a student, but as an instructor. Once forced into its brutal trials as a child, she now trains the next generation of warriors, wielding the title of Elite, the first to rise in over two centuries. But with that title comes expectations, burdens, and secrets that refuse to stay buried.

When Leander, a dangerous newcomer with a past shrouded in mystery, is appointed as a fellow instructor, Arkona is immediately wary. He is too skilled, too familiar, and too unwilling to explain why he fights like he belongs at Thornspire. Their first encounter ignites a silent war of willpower, neither willing to yield, but as tensions rise, so does an undeniable pull between them, one neither of them understands nor dares to name.

Meanwhile, Finn Calder, a sharp-witted weapons expert with a penchant for explosions, and Rhea Durnhart, a brilliant healer with an iron will, weave their own chaos through the halls. Their antics, pranks, and whispered truths entwine with Arkona and Leander’s story, forging bonds that could either break them or become the only thing keeping them alive.

As the Harvest Trials begin; a grueling month where new students fight for a place at Thornspire—the instructors are forced to watch, choose, and train the strongest survivors. But Arkona and Leander have already seen the horrors of these trials. They were the children forced into them once. As they mentor the next generation, their own pasts rise to the surface, revealing truths neither were prepared to face.

When the Yule Ball arrives, what should have been a night of formality and pretense becomes a turning point. Secrets unravel, hidden legacies are revealed, and Arkona makes a bold, public claim on Leander, sealing their fates. But in the shadows, forces beyond their control are already moving.

By the time the final dance ends, Arkona and Leander will no longer be just instructors caught in a dangerous game. They will be bound to each other, to a prophecy, and to a war far greater than they ever imagined.

This was a great debut novel!!
It literally has everything.
Gods, Trials, magic, found family, slow burn, little bit of spice.
I really loved the 4 main characters.
Arkona and Leander are my favorites though. They grow throughout the book. She is a badass. And he is everything I love in a MMC. Dark, broody, a little on the wild side.
Hawthorn is an unexpected loved character. Love his wit. You'll love him too once you read this great fantasy read. debut novel!!

Divine Pairings. Fire and Shadow. Light and Doom.

This book surprised me in the best way. From the richly staged world at the very beginning to the moments that had me literally laughing out loud, it delivered far more than I expected. A strong start and an even better ride. Hawthorne stole my heart.
Alexis M. Sanders hooked me instantly with the dark, vivid world of Thornspire Manor. Arkona’s return as an Elite instructor—and her tense, electric dynamic with the mysterious Leander—made this story impossible to put down. The humor and heart from Finn and Rhea balance the intensity perfectly.
The Harvest Trials add high stakes, the Yule Ball delivers major twists, and by the end Arkona and Leander are tied to a fate far bigger than either expected. A gripping, atmospheric fantasy I loved from start to finish.
