This is a collection of five stories filled with emotion, surprises, secrets and second chances. Although the heart wins in each tale, the journey to that victory is filled with misconceptions, mistakes and missteps. Perception is not always reality and the pathway to true love is not always clear. You will find varied and interesting characters, differing storylines, strong emotion, physical attraction and happy endings, as you read this enjoyable and entertaining collection.
A Rake’s Holiday Return - Ramona Elmes
Lady Harriet Barstow (26) and Lord Anthony Webster (29)
Anthony, his older brother Philip, their steward’s son Jon, and Lillian and her younger sister Harriet, all grew up together and were as thick as thieves. Not only were their estates about a mile apart, but the two mothers were best friends. Five years ago, Lillian and Philip, who is now the Duke of Webster, married. Crushed, because he had convinced himself that he had wanted to marry Lillian, Anthony left England and took Jon with him. They spent their years in Bohemia amassing a fortune. Now the two men were back home for Christmas. At the age of twenty-six, Harriet was still unmarried. She was in no hurry and was firm about wanting a love match. The two mothers decided to invite eligible young ladies and men to spend Christmastide with them, hoping that Harriet and Anthony would each find a match. However, when they did, it was with each other. Was that their mothers’ plan all along? This is a story involving maternal machinations, latent feelings, a mysterious King of Garnets, forgiveness and a touch of steam. The characters are rich and familiar, and Harriet’s curiosity-caused clumsiness adds a unique twist.
The Holly’s Gift - Natalie Highland
Eleanor (Nell) and Nicholas Duke of Graves
This story leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Nick was called home after being gone for nearly a decade. He was the second son of the Duke of Graves and had no desire to take over the duchy now that his older brother had married a dance hall girl and forgone his birthright. However, when he was summoned to the king, he learned that he had no choice. Meantime Eleanor (Nell), whose father was recently elevated to Earl of Warrick due to wartime activities, was preparing for her come out. She and Nick had a garden discussion that sparked the interest of both parties. What follows is a series of strange events that leads to a betrothal, and a surprise from the King. The Earl is my favorite ancillary character. He’s warm, kind and down to earth.
Nothing Compares To You (The Terrible Trentons #2) - Andrea Jenelle
Deirdre and Cassius Trenton
Deirdre was the daughter of the Trenton’s Irish housekeeper, and Cassius Trenton was in love with her. When his wealthy father found out that they planned to marry, he threatened to ruin Deirdre’s whole family if Cassius didn’t abandon her immediately. Cass left without saying good-bye and headed out west. After he left, Deirdre found out that she was pregnant and ended up marrying a man who had also been in love with her. Seven years later, Deirdre was a widowed mother of two running a boarding house…..and Cassius was summoned home by his mother, as his father was dying. What follows is an emotional tale filled with longing and regret. Mistakes had been made, hearts had been broken, forgiveness was required and reparation needed to be made. This story includes the struggles of the men working to fill the wealthy men’s pockets, while dealing with unsafe conditions. There are some intense moments as well as a few endearing ones, and an undercurrent that will keep you on edge,
When the Duke Falls - Ari Thatcher
Pearl, Lady Gravely and Victor Levitt (40), the Duke of Rettendon
Even though this has a happy ending, it is a sad tale. Pearl was courted by both Percy and Victor, who were good friends. She chose Perry and they had two daughters. Percy died eleven months ago and unbeknownst to him, Victor’s mother, the Dowager Duchess of Rettendon, invited Pearl and her young daughters to spend Christmastide with them. Although the two children are delightful and bring levity to the situation, the undercurrent of sadness permeates. Although Percy was the safe choice, Pearl suspected that he was the wrong choice. Victor was a kind host to both Pearl and her daughters, and eventually presented Pearl with a new opportunity. This is a second chance story filled with stong emotion, including regret and acceptance.
How to Lose A Rake in Twelve Days - Misty Urban
Madelina (Lina) Moiseney (21) and Garrick Locklam (26), Lord Warin
Madelina had been in love with her neighbor Garrick Locklam, who was five years her senior, since she was a child. Unfortunately, as he got older, he developed a well earned reputation as a rake. At eighteen, she proposed marriage to him, which he politely declined. Now three years later, Garrick’s cousin Bartholomew has died and the barony and all that comes with it has become Garrick’s responsibility. Upon his return from the Continent, he told Madelina that he accepted her proposal. She rescinded it, as she did not want to be another notch on his bedpost and she could not trust him because she believed that he knew something about her brother’s disappearance that he refused to tell her. Her brother Constantin had returned to France to secure their father’s estate and had gotten caught up in the revolution. Before he died, Bartholomew had been searching for information regarding Constantin, and Madelina was sure Garrick had information he was withholding. This is a heart vs head story, wherein secrets are kept and assumptions are made. Garrick’s actions belied his actual feelings for Madelina, and her pride and stubborness strove to keep her heart safe. This is an endearing tale with a very satisfying conclusion.
