Great for anyone with a low appetite. I've been having an aversion to food (medication induced) and it's causing a lot of trouble with my iron, calcium, Vitamin D, and so on. I already have issues related to these, so it's just making things worse. That said, the thought of food makes me nauseous, I can eat a sort of normal sized lunch, but no breakfast and a small dinner, if I eat dinner and not just a snack. I've been largely eating more eggs and beans for some of the worse issues (protein and iron), and it's getting kind of old, but nothing really appeals to me.

This book is more than a cookbook, it goes over what may be causing the issues, how to prepare for them, tips for how to deal with just not wanting, but needing, to eat. There are a bunch of non-meal recipes in here, snacks, smoothies, etc. and I've found those most helpful. I even have a morning smoothie on some days (this isn't going to cure your low appetite, and it isn't meant to) because the blueberry and almond butter smoothie is actually really good and I find myself craving one every now and again. There is also a warm honey and cinnamon almond milk that helps curb my coffee intake, and tastes delightful. These two I've been leaning on heavily as I try to work my way through the other recipes in this.

Most of the meal recipes are actually simple, not complicated. Though at first glance they appear to be something that would take a ton of time to make, a good number of them use pantry items and things you can prepare ahead of time and just put together when needed. There is also a whole section on meal planning, pantry and fridge staples, and it goes over what each staple provides (fiber, protein) so you can also mix and match as you like. Very helpful book for those who have low/no appetite, makes things simple, understands you might not want to do any of those things, and has methods for negotiating those.

I received an advanced reader copy of this title from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Originally posted on my blog Nonstop Reader.

Every Bite Counts is an interesting and engaging meal solution plan for readers who are dealing with low appetite, surgical recovery, illness, or GLP-1 effects written by Rob Hobson. Released 5th May 2026 by The Experiment, it's 256 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats.

The author discusses the potential problems of maintaining metabolic health and calorie intake no matter what the source of diminished appetite is: GLP-1 use, chronic illness, recovery, age, or other causes. Roughly 30% of the page count is a solid analysis of the principal reasons as well as coping/compensatory strategies for combating food aversion. It also contains a number of tasty tempting appetizing recipes as well as some sample meal plans.

Recipes are written with introduction, servings, nutritional info, ingredients in a bullet list, and full step-by-step prep instructions. Ingredient measurements are given in imperial (American) units only. Most of the ingredients will be readily available at most well-stocked grocery stores in North America.

Roughly 25% of the dishes in the book are accompanied by one of more photos. The food photography is appealing and well styled. The photos are in color throughout. There are a number of plant based (veg*n friendly) recipes and meal plans included. The author/publisher have also included supportive appendices including portion tables with reduced serving sizes included, vitamin/mineral tables with target foods to eat, an abbreviated reference/bibliography, and a cross-referenced index.

Four stars. This would be an excellent choice for public library acquisition, home use, or professional use (caretakers, nutritionists, etc).

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Whether you are on GLP-1 meds, surviving chemotherapy, or just don’t feel like eating, Every Bite Counts can help you achieve the nutrition that your body needs to thrive.

With concrete ideas about what to eat for optimal nutrition to 100 recipes for smaller palates, this book delivers on its promise. It includes fine dining recipes for those who still like to cook. But it also includes easy smoothies and snacks that are fast and easy to prepare. The charts in the appendix provide a quick and easy to follow list of nutrients in common foods with both the normal serving size as well as a reduced one for lower appetites. Who knew that an orange has 40% more fiber than an apple? Not me, for sure.

If you have a reduced appetite, or just want to eat more nutritional dense foods, Every Bite Counts is a good choice. 4 stars!

Thanks to NetGalley and The Experiment for providing me with an advanced review copy.

I was skeptical this book would actually be useful beyond the GLP-1 conversation, but Hobson's approach works for anyone dealing with low appetite, whether it's recovery, stress, or just not feeling like eating. The 100+ recipes are nutrient-dense without being preachy about it.

What made the difference for me was how he breaks down the strategy before the recipes. Understanding that smaller portions mean every bite needs to count nutritionally changed how I plan meals. The smart food pairings and macro-focused recipes actually taste good and don't feel like a chore when you're not hungry anyway.

Already made the high-protein options when my appetite tanks, and they work. Practical, no guilt-tripping, just solid nutrition in smaller servings.

This cookbook is perfect for anyone that might be struggling to eat normal meals, or sometimes gets sick from eating. This nutrition dense meals help your body get the nutrients that it needs. There is a wide variety of meals from nice dinners meals, smoothies and snacks.

I also appreciate how this book gives you a list with detailed nutrients for a lot of different foods. Rob Hobson also breaks down the details of why you might be struggling to eat as well prepping for those really hard days.

The recipes are yummy and easy to put together. I will definitely be snagging me a copy of this so I can continue to use it and make more of the recipes.

Thank you NetGalley and The Experiment for sharing a copy of this early. All of my opinions are my own.

While I don’t take GLP-1 medication, I do often struggle with a low appetite. Every Bite Counts includes a lot of useful information. I especially liked the charts as a lot of information can be overwhelming or hard to remember. Recipes sounded good, though I wish there had been more pictures. I can see this cookbook being really helpful to some readers. I don’t know that it’s something I would get except as a reference.

***ARC from NetGalley***

Originally created/inspired by patients taking the GLP-1 medications to counteract nutritional loss and related issues due to decreased appetite. This book works for anyone that lacks the desire to eat or cook, for whatever reason. Easily accessible information and recipes. The recipes are accessible, with easy to find ingredients and simple to make. I will most definitely be trying these (currently on medication that destroyed my appetite).

Have already recommended two friends that are having similar issues.

I received a copy of this eBook from netGalley for a honest review.

As someone who deals with limited appetite on a lot of days this book made me feel better about myself. Like it wasn't freaky to only want to eat one meal if it has to be so damn big. I got a lot of ideas on how to make smaller meals and eat more often to get the nutrients that I truly need. The recipes looked easy and delicious and the advice seemed sound.
