NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Rising above the devastation of World War I, a young half-French, half-American woman remains true to her own independent spirit in this powerful historical novel by bestselling author Danielle Steel.

Alexandra Bouvier is born in Paris in 1900, at the dawn of a new century. From an early age, she is encouraged to think for herself by her enlightened family: her father, a French doctor; her mother, an American nurse; and her maternal grandfather a highly regarded newspaperman back in the Midwest.

At age fourteen, Alex’s comfortable life is upended as war erupts across Europe. Her parents follow their sense of duty to the front, performing triage at a field hospital and confronting the horrors of poison gas and trench warfare. The merciless fighting, coupled with the fast-spreading Spanish flu, wreaks havoc on the continent, as well as on Alex’s loved ones. By the time she is eighteen, she has suffered unimaginable losses.

With her grandfather’s support, she attends the University of Chicago and decides to follow his footsteps into journalism. As a newspaper intern she meets reporter Oliver Foster, who is covering the gang wars sparked by Prohibition. He too has known devastating loss, and the two are drawn to each other, though both fear any attachment. As it turns out, Alex has good reason to be cautious.

Danielle Steel’s sweeping historical novel is a story of resilience and the courage to open one’s heart—no matter how many times it’s been broken—and believe in oneself.

This story surprised me in the best way. What I expected to be a simple historical romance turned into a deeply moving journey about strength, loss, and a woman quietly fighting for her voice in a world that keeps shifting beneath her. 💔✨

Alexandra’s resilience truly touched me. Even in the hardest seasons of her life, she carries a quiet strength that feels both heartbreaking and inspiring.

I just wish the ending had given us a little more of her happiness. I wanted a clearer glimpse of the life she fought so hard to build... her future, maybe a new family and the real, messy, beautiful parts of it. ❤️

Still, it left me feeling inspired and reflective. A reminder that strength doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful. 📖✨

A Mind of Her Own is set at the turn of the twentieth century. The novel commences with Alexandra Bouvier being raised in Paris. Her French physician father, her American nurse mother, and her grandmother, an avid supporter of the idea of intellectual freedom, provide Alexandra with something that was quite rare for women at the time , the freedom to think. Alexandra is taught not only to behave well but also to think.

However, the First World War breaks out and changes the European scene dramatically. The war is followed by the influenza pandemic. Her life is peppered with loss and death. Alexandra leaves for America, and it is here that she is no longer naive but has been tempered.

In America, Alexandra studies at the University of Chicago and later becomes a journalist. The most interesting part of the novel is the journalism section. Here, Alexandra has to fight for a name and recognition as a woman journalist. Alexandra is not only beautiful but also has the intellect to back up her work.

Alexandra has some romantic links. Some of these relationships are based on hope, while others are based on timing and fear. The main feature is however Oliver Foster, a crime journalist with his own share of scars. The love is not based on grand gestures but on compromise and perseverance.

What makes the novel most appropriate for Valentine's Day is the fact that it covers all aspects of love. Love is not just romantic but also intellectual and parental. The novel also shows that love does not protect us from pain but gives us the strength to move on. And self love as confidence is also love to know.

And the encapsulation of all these could very well be the most romantic thing of all.

A quick and easy little read. Cute story. I’d recommend for someone looking for a light, historical fiction read.
