Stormcaught: An MM Fantasy Romance Novella

Rate this book
A grumpy, reclusive scholar. An unexpected houseguest with a shadowy past. And a cottage with only one bed.

Everything Ethram has ever had in his life, he has lost. His family. His health. His courage. Ever since his accident in the dark of the university archives, he just wants to be left alone. He is content to quietly fade away with his history books and his tumbling-down cottage.

Until the storm. Until the stranger.

Ky arrives on Ethram’s doorstep wounded, rain-drenched, and fey enough to be dangerous. Taking him in is reckless, but Ethram is a historian, and is far too intrigued by the promise of a mystery to turn him away.

Ky’s secrets run river-deep. He is a threat, bringing danger stalking closer every day. And despite his arrogance, he is strikingly thoughtful, coaxing Ethram’s cottage garden back to life. He gives Ethram everything Ethram is too afraid to want…a warm bed, a companion, a home. And that is another kind of danger.

Because Ky is not meant to stay in the mortal world—and loving him might be Ethram’s greatest loss of all.

Stormcaught is a darkly cosy MM novella with a grumpy historian and a mysteriously monstrous houseguest. It is a prequel story to All Woven With Ivy, though it can easily be read as a standalone. It contains gentle pining, fantasy academia, cottagecore cosiness, and low spice with fade-to-grey scenes.

But believing in gods and monsters is different from trusting them. From loving them.

rating: 4.25★
probably my fav of hawthorne's so far romance-wise, it has the typical cozy vibe though even moreso with its setting in an isolated cottage and the imagery of storms and rain. while it takes place over a year or so, it's perfect to cuddle up w tea to read in the colder months of fall/winter.

grumpy, scholar ethram and mysterious, charming ky were an adorable pair. gave me major "as you wish" vibes with how caretaking ky was for ethram doing acts of service unasked 🥺

it definitely peeked my attention to read the remaining hawthorne novel left, all woven with ivy!

“Your eyes are lovely. Your mind is vicious. Your mouth is a gift.”

an honest arc review ♡

3.5 stars!!

Thea Hawthorne might just be my favourite author when it comes to writing atmosphere and creating a setting that you just wish you could step into and live in. As always, I loved the author's lyrical writing and the cosiness of this novella.

In regards to the romance, the relationship between Ethram and Ky did feel a bit insta-lovey to me, and also on their own I have to admit that they weren't my favourite characters by Thea Hawthorne that I've read about so far. And while this novella had more of an outside plot than the author’s previous books, it felt to me as though some of the major plot points happened off-page and we focused more on the domestic and cosy moments between the characters, which didn’t one hundred percent work for me personally.

In comparison to the other novellas by Thea Hawthorne I've read, this one was probably my least favourite, but I still had a great time reading and would definitely recommend. Only goes to show that her other books are even better in my opinion!

Thank you so much to Thea Hawthorne for the eARC!!

✨ ARC READ AND REVIEW ✨

“I loved you before spring stirred the soil.”

This novella was incredibly impressive and I didn’t even have to know anything prior about the universe. I’m unsure if it will follow over into the published edition, but the glossary at the beginning of my ARC read was helpful, but honestly not needed. Enough is said within the first chapter to get a good idea of what is going on within the world without it feeling over saturated with world-building.

The book, marketed as a cozy, dark and mysterious novella, is just that. Even as the story progresses and you find more out about Ky through Ethram’s perspective, the mystery surrounding him is still just as prominent.

This novella had me floating through this world and I look forward to reading ‘All Woven with Ivy’.

Review:
This book was absolutely exceptionally written. Thea has a way of writing so lyrically, and it's captivating. Immediately you are drawn in and curious, as it starts with giving you a little world-building and information at the start.

I loved Ethram; gosh, what a relatable character. A grumpy, scholar bookworm who just wants to live with minimal distractions in his cozy cottage in the woods, with his books and tea. His world gets rocked when a mysterious man shows up in the middle of a storm (Ky) and turns his world upside down. It was so good watching Ethram and hearing his internal dialogue as he both battles wanting to kick this stranger out and feeling a need to reluctantly care for him at the same time.

Then Ky, who starts out kinda mysterious and monstrous, suddenly is the cutest. He literally starts fixing up things around the house, gardening, cooking, knitting, making tea (I MEAN COME ONNN, CUTEEE), and as the two of these men fall into this domestic, cozy routine, there's the underlying mystery unfolding. I truly loved watching their connection grow deeper; you could feel the chemistry and intimacy between them, without the need for on-page explicit scenes. It was just so well done! The story was well-paced; it unfolded beautifully; history explained, the mysteries slowly unraveled, memories returned, and monsters in the dark were revealed.

The story felt well-paced, the romance didn't feel forced, the characters were lovable, Thea's writing was perfection, the descriptions were amazing, and the world was captivating! Definitely recommend!!

This is the perfect autumn read. The story of a man who stole a dead god’s heart, and the love and learning that followed.

I’ve been wanting to learn the start of Ky and Hart’s story since they opened their cottage door to Zanthi in All Woven With Ivy, and this is far and away a satisfactory beginning. Stormcaught has that characteristic Thea Hawthorne softness, but with sharpened edges. This tale ventures slightly further into the darker side of aether and its monsters - which, as a soft horror girlie, I LOVE. This is the first story in the Esk-verse to feature an inhuman character as one of the protagonists, and Ky’s thinly-veiled otherness is both compelling and beautiful - not to mention the way Ethram accepts all of him, even when afraid. Stormcaught also takes place outside of the city we’ve spent so much time in, which widens this world nicely.

I highly recommend settling into a booth in your favorite café, ordering something pumpkin-flavored, and falling headfirst into a love like no other.

3.5-3.75*

As always the atmosphere and world itself were incredible, though I did long for some chemistry between our two main characters. We skipped any form of courtship or tentative feelings and went straight to domesticity and love even though I didn’t really get a feeling that they even liked each other, other than the fact I was told that they did? This sadly made the novella drag a bit for me because so much of it is centred around their life in the cottage, but I just did not feel or believe in their relationship.

**Thank you to Thea Hawthorne for allowing me to read the ARC for Stormcaught**

This is the type of cosy, cottage-core read I came to appreciate. The tension and pining between the two characters was amazing, and the story genuinely had me tossing up whether the ending was going to be happy or sad.

I have not read the book before this (Stormcaught is a prequel), and I didn't feel like I was missing out. The author brought you into the story effortlessly in so few pages.

Welcome back to the wonderful world of Esk. this book is a prequel to All Woven with Ivy and tells the tale of how Ethram and Kai meet. It's a low angst (yes, there is some) cosy book, showing more of the world of Esk and it's denizens.

I'm not going to give away spoilers, but curl up in your chair with your favourite cup of tea and prepare to lose yourself in this lovely tale. Thea Hawthorne has done it again with this story and I can't wait to read more about this world.

STORMCAUGHT by Thea Hawthorne

“You are the strangest thing I have ever known,” says Ethram, and he feels his smile fade. “But it would be stranger still to never have known you at all.”

Ethram, a reclusive scholar, seeks quiet solitude in his cottage, scarred by a lifetime of loss. His peace shatters when Ky, a mysterious and otherworldly stranger, appears on his doorstep during a storm. Despite the inherent danger and Ky's ancient secrets, Ethram is drawn in. As Ky breathes new life into his world with companionship and warmth, their burgeoning love faces a heartbreaking truth: Ky isn't meant for the mortal realm, threatening Ethram with his most profound loss yet.

This year has been filled with amazing releases set in Thea Hawthorne’s Esk. I went into Stormcaught with high expectations, and I'm thrilled to say it absolutely delivered the enchantment and depth I've come to love in her books. This novella, like her other contributions to this rich universe, pulls you right into its world, blending the comforting and the subtly unsettling –that sweet spot between what we know and what we fear.

Thea has this knack for crafting a world that feels both familiar and magical. Stormcaught is full of those little tidbits of lore and foreshadowing that weave a truly cohesive tapestry, not only expanding the Esk universe but making you feel like you're part of its history. There's this profound sense of saudade for Esk, a longing for a place we, as readers, have never actually been but somehow deeply miss. By stepping beyond the usual city setting, Stormcaught broadens the world, revealing more of its intricate past and the ancient –sometimes monstrous– forces lurking beneath.

Central to Stormcaught is the achillean romance between Ethram and Ky. Ethram, a contemplative scholar tucked away in his cozy cottage with his books, finds his carefully built solitude gently shaken up by Ky, a wounded stranger with an otherworldly presence. Their journey together is beautifully drawn, moving from cautious care to a deep connection filled with mutual longing and an undeniable, sizzling chemistry. Ky's subtle otherness is met with such tender acceptance by Ethram, the comfort of being seen and loved fully, complexities and all. The domestic intimacy that blooms between them –Ky's acts of service, whether he's baking, knitting, gardening, or protecting Ethram– creates an atmosphere of hearth-like warmth, making it the perfect read for a chilly autumn or winter day.

Hawthorne's lyrical writing, always a highlight, dips into prose poetry at times. The balance between every word being carefully chosen yet flowing like a river is present throughout the book. The pacing, while soft and unhurried like the cosiness of the story, blends the Ky and Ethram’s blossoming romance with the mystery about Ky's past. As those secrets slowly unravel and the darkness wades through the cosiness, the last third of the book becomes impossible to put down.

Ultimately, Stormcaught is a captivating novella that once again showcases the magic imbued in the Esk universe, weaving together a cosy, cottagecore-adjacent feel with darker, fantastical elements, giving us a deeply satisfying romance and a compelling mystery within the gorgeously crafted Esk universe that will spark recognition in the mind of All Woven With Ivy readers. Even as a novella, it's packed with history and emotional depth. This book is yet another must-read for fans of the Esk books and Thea Hawthorne’s writing.

What a beautifully written story. This was my introduction to Thea’s work and I received this as an ARC. I loved the snippet of world building/information included at the start; it’s extremely helpful.

I feel like this story had all my favourite tropes without seeming repetitive/predictable. I love that Ethram is an introverted book lover who doesn’t really seem to be living his life. When one night during a terrible storm someone with no where else to go knocks on his door, we meet Ky. The story that follows grabbed my interest immediately and I devoured this book. We watch Ethram care for a stranger who he initially wants to kick out and Ky kinda just keeps finding things around the home to fix. (Can I have a Ky?) We got a one bed trope with a sense of yearning without really any spice (I love my spice) however I felt like it wasn’t needed to show the love and relationship growing between the two. (YA?) I loved watching Ethram come out of his shell and Ky open up along the way. “My heart” may be my new favourite nickname for a partner 🥺 I loved the balance of plot and love story and the time jumps without the story feeling dragged out.

I can’t wait to read more of Thea’s work

A novella following a grumpy scholar who is determined to live a life of solitude, and the mysterious man who shows up on his doorstep one stormy night.

Thea Hawthorne’s writing is like a breath of fresh air.

I love how unique each of her characters are. She portrays yearning and slow love in such a beautiful way as well.

Stormcaught can easily be read as a standalone, but I enjoyed the experience even more having read AWWI earlier on in the year. The story is easy to follow and has a distinct cozy and fantasy aspect to it.

If you are a lover of medium stakes, queer fantasy - then Stormcaught is for you!

This was lovely!! I randomly picked this book while scrolling through Kobo Plus options because the stunning cover caught my eye. Thankfully the story was just as beautiful!

Ethram, an antisocial scholar, lets a magical stranger into his home and heart. I appreciated how their relationship grew slowly, with the turning of the seasons providing the perfect backdrop. The little cottage, plentiful garden, endless stacks of books, and powerful magic all combined into a wonderful setting. When I say I want to read a cozy book, this is exactly what I mean.

Ethram and Ky’s love was truly heartwarming, and their world made me really curious about what might happen next. I found some of the world building a bit confusing, but I think it really encouraged you to use your imagination. I know it’s building up this mysterious conflict, I just found the information we received in this prequel to be a bit too abstract.

If you’re looking for a short, romantic, cozy read, I highly recommend this one!!

Another charming Esk tale. The relationship dynamic is similar to A Lantern Left Burning but with a countryside feeling. I’m glad I’ve already read All Woven With Ivy so I know how the story continues. I finished this book at work and had to hold back tears at my desk. Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this book.

This was a really cute short story. I feel like I would've enjoyed it a lot more if I actually read the series that it belongs to, but that's on me. I felt that the third person point of view was very fitting and it made it feel a lot more academic, which is fitting considering who the characters.

"Ethram has made a career of seeking those secrets, and so he figures he can’t truly be surprised when some of those secrets seek him out in return."

The language in Stormcaught is beautiful. I was first struck with the prose in Hawthorne's previous Esk novella, and realized that this was not just a story I was reading, but it was almost akin to even poetry. The words are carefully chosen to set a specific mood, and everything is just so atmospheric. It's truly something to read these words. Hawthorne writes with this unique brand of melancholy gravitas that is truly something special.

Stormcaught is slowburn, cozy romance. Ethram is a scholar who would much rather spend his time getting lost in a book than he would socializing with his coworkers. He is content to spend the rainy season holed-up and reading about the obscured ancient history of Esk. One day, a knock on the door brings him Ky, a wounded man who is more beautiful and strangely ethereal than Ethram thought possible. Ethram brings Ky into his home to help him heal, and along the way, realizes that maybe Ky is helping Ethram heal, too.

Though this is a novella, Thea Hawthorne is able to infuse so much rich history into the pages. Esk feels lived in, and the world feels fully built and real -- as complex as novels with a dozen entries. There is a glossary in the beginning to help new readers get caught up to speed on some of the terminology, and I feel like Hawthorne does such a fantastic job of making each entry sound so interesting as to want their own novel or novella for each one.

The chemistry between Ethram and Ky is very well written. Hawthorne does a phenomenal job infusing them with the perfect amount of tension to leave them, and the reader, ready and wanting. Ethram and Ky make such a lovely couple. Ethram, the introvert, and Ky, the extrovert, push and pull each other to make the other a better person and to bring them back into the world. The scenes where Ethram is curled against Ky, feeling his protective warmth and comforting him against a chilly winter outside -- my goodness. It is incredibly sweet in its domestic intimacy. Hawthorne recently sent out a piece of bonus art from this novella, and it is so wonderful.

All throughout the book, we have this mystery growing in the background about Ky's past. He does not remember much of his past, but Ethram is determined to help him. The more we delve into the book, and the more we delve into who Ky used to be, the pressure begins to build and build. I found myself devouring the last third of the book, too riddled with anticipation to put the book down.

I loved this book. I knew I probably would, because I loved the other Esk books. Thea Hawthorne's works are an absolute delight and a privilege to read.

I received an ARC, but all opinions are my own.

Thank you so much to the author Thea Hawthorne for the digital ARC, it hasn't affected my honest review.

TW: death, injury, violence, references to ritual death and religion

A prequel set before the events of 'All Woven With Ivy', 'Stormcaught' follows Ethram Hart, a grumpy scholar, in the aftermath of an attack that's left him badly scarred and highly sensitive to magic. He's lost everything- his family, his bravery and his need to more deeply study the history of Esk- and has quietly accepted a future where he fades away in the achieves he was injured in. An enormous storm changes everything, leaving an injured, amnesiac and obviously not human man in need of Ethram's help. Despite everything, he's too intrigued to send Ky away, especially because he definitely has some connection to the missing gods of Esk. Ky is being hunted by an unknown threat, one determined to pull him away from the life he's building for himself inside Ethram's home and garden (and heart). Ethram knows that he can't have Ky forever, but as a year passes, he struggles to reconcile a world where a god will give up everything to stay with him.

I absolutely adored 'All Woven With Ivy' and I was so lucky to be part of the ARC team for this prequel novella about two of my favourite characters from the earlier book! 'Stormcaught' is a little less cosy than the other works set in Esk, darker and with more of a risk- I adored it. Ethram is a beautiful main character, I took to him instantly and I loved how he changed the longer he had the support of Ky behind him. Ky is deeply mysterious, kind but also quietly dangerous due to who he really is. The descriptions and language in the Esk books are absolutely gorgeously written, I have so many quotes underlined. I particularly loved how it's emphasised how inhuman and godly Ky is, especially because he seems so content to live quietly as a human with a garden, knitting and cups of tea. The love story between the two men is slow and soothing, building gradually into the beautiful relationship that we see in 'All Woven With Ivy'. This is the perfect prequel novella, bringing to life a gorgeous relationship between a curious, crotchety man and his sunshine partner in a cottage on the outskirts of a city. I enjoyed getting to see other characters from the first book too!

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - no spoiler review

As always I like to begin by thanking the author who gave me the privilege to read their work. I am so grateful to have received an ARC "Stormcaught," by Thea Hawthorne. Thank you for welcoming me into the world of Esk! I will absolutely read your other books because I cannot get Ky & Ethram out of my head!

Plot:

"Stormcaught," is a novella prequel at 174 pages from Thea Hawthorne's "The Riversent Series." This follows a young professor in his thirties, going about his life until one night a man shows up injured on his front doorstep. When he tends to his wounds something feels familiar yet off about him at the same time, when he decides to offer him a place to stay to recover his injuries- his life is upended.

Characters:

Ethram is witty, sharp and has a permanent arms length cautiousness about him. You can tell that he doesn't want to let anyone close to him- in fear of losing he would prefer to stay alone than risk loss. Ky is task driven, thoughtful and eccentric. He has a carefree attitude while also being shockingly attentive and understanding. These two have a cozy and lovable dynamic- that had me giggling and kicking my feet like an idiot.

Themes / Tropes

Grief / Fear of loss
Strangers -> Friends -> lovers
Slow Burn

Monster Bakes & Knits ( cause he's so cute)

Cottage core charm

Pacing

This was a novella so it was only 174 pages. It went very quickly and when I had 20 minutes left in the book my heart was pounding cause I didn't want it to end, and I knew the end was coming. The pacing spaces it out over different seasons. ( times of the year. )

Favorite Quote:

“Not I,” says Ky softly, and so darkly. “I am the river that runs for eternity. The springs that bring oblivion. I do not cease. I do not falter. I am yours, always.”

Conclusion & Thoughts:

I think this prequel makes me want to read the rest of Thea Hawthorne's work. I loved the world, loved the idea of Esk, I thought the world building was astounding in the amount of pages I had - even with a little key to help guide me from the other book that was provided it was so easy to follow along even having no knowledge of Thea's previous book. I loved living in their world and I can't wait to dive into the next one!

Once again a huge thank you to Thea for allowing me to ARC read another book! To nobodies surprise, I absolutely loved this book!🧡
The book tells the story of Ethram, a scholar who spends his days staring at his research alone in his parlour, and Ky, a mysterious and somewhat ethereal stranger, (both previously seen in All Woven With Ivy), an unusual pair brought together by a chance encounter. When Ky shows up out of the blue on Ethrams doorstep cold and alone, Ethram must decide whether to close the door and keep himself to himself and go about his quiet, rather dull life as usual, or allow the strange beast of a man into his home.
What starts out as a simple and cosy novella quickly turns into an engaging story with intriguing twist and turns sure to keep any reader engaged. It’s a perfect autumn read!🍂
I first read AWWI earlier this year and completely fell in love with Thea’s storytelling and writing style and immediately felt the need to read even more, despite my usual reads being so action packed and dramatic. The way she tells a story and describes the characters she creates makes me as a reader feel so involved and so invested in every little aspect of the book, and I could not recommend her as an author highly enough. Her style is so different to why I usually go for but each time I’ve had the pleasure of reading her books, it’s been a whole new and completely lovely experience. I truly feel like I know these characters and I have so much appreciation and admiration for Thea!
This book, just like AWWI, had me aaaaall the way in my feels in the best possible way!🥹
The romance between Ethram and Ky just felt so sweet and gentle despite us not truly knowing who or what Ky is and what he’s capable of, and knowing that Ethram is the kind of guy who would much prefer to be a little bit of a hermit but is more than happy to come out of his shell for his love 🥰

“You are the strangest thing I have ever known, but it would be stranger still to never have known you at all.”

Storm Caught is a cosy, quietly enchanting prequel in the Riversent series that lingers like mist after rain. It follows Ethram Hart, a university scholar specializing in the lost history of Esk, whose quiet life is upended when the mysterious Ky appears on his doorstep one stormy night. Ky’s arrival stirs long-buried memories of an attack Ethram endured in the shadowy archives beneath Esk — memories he must confront and untangle to uncover who Ky truly is.

The romance unfolds quickly, but with emotional weight. Ethram tries to suppress his feelings, convinced Ky is only passing through and that attachment would lead to heartbreak. Yet the pull between them is undeniable, and he comes around fast enough to make the connection feel earned. Their chemistry is soft, sweet, and deeply satisfying.

As a prequel to All Woven With Ivy, Storm Caught expands the mythos of Esk with tantalizing glimpses into its deeper lore — the archives, the forgotten histories, the artisans, and the aether that hums beneath the surface. It opens doors to stories yet untold, though some of those threads remain just out of reach. I found myself wishing the book had been a little longer, just to bask in its atmosphere and explore those mysteries more fully.
While it technically precedes AWWI, I’d recommend reading it afterward — the emotional resonance and narrative echoes land more powerfully when you already know where the story is headed.

Thank you, Thea Hawthorne, for another beautifully woven thread in the tapestry of Esk that you have created through the Muses of Esk and Riversent series. Storm Caught is a tender, atmospheric gem, and I’m so grateful for the quiet magic you continue to share with us.

This is the second book set in Esk that I've read, and as Ethram is a more reclusive character than Linnea, I did find myself grappling with the world a little bit more in Stormcaught than in A Lantern Left Burning. I really, really enjoyed the worldbuilding in Lantern Left Burning, which featured the social dynamics of the world so succinctly and wonderfully.

I was expecting something similar with Stormcaught, and was unfortunately left a little bit disappointed. However, I haven't read All Woven With Ivy, and I think if I had I would've enjoyed Stormcaught a lot more because those gaps and established social circle would've already been filled in.

I did very much enjoy returning to Hawthorne's writing though and reading the lush, evocatove descriptions that set the scene. As this novella takes place during the course of a full year, it was lovely to experience Hawthorne describing each season.

"Esk's sacred springs are tea-scented and delightfully hot, curling clouds of steam between mossy banks and winter-bare oaks."

Without spoiling anything, the gods of Esk are a central theme in Stormcaught and Hawthorne uses one of my favourite interpretations of the relationship between a god and their devotee. The gods have power through remembrance and that is a cornerstone to their existence. It also leads to more questions and more to explore within this world and its past.

"Is anything ever done?"

Finally, I did love our characters of Ethram and Ky. While the ending of A Lantern Left Burning left me unsatisfied with the declarations of love, Stormcaught was perfect. It also features quite similar character tropes, so I really enjoyed this ending from Hawthorne.

I will absolutely return to Esk and am interested in All Woven With Ivy, but I may not pick it up until next year with my unread TBR shelf looming over my shoulder.

Review Copy – This book was sent to me by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

hello hello i am once again back to tell you all that you MUST read thea hawthorne's latest masterpiece, stormcaught. don't even question it just leave the house or pick up your kindle and buy it. right now. forget all your other responsibilities - the kids, the car, the house, your job - who cares when the perfect cosy romantasy novella is here for you all to enjoy.

um, so, five stars is not enough. i must personally collect every single star in the sky and place them in a basket on thea's doorstep.

because when i tell you that this was everything i needed and wanted and more.

i was a starving woman at a banquet and stormcaught FED me. fed me for days. it is a succulent three course meal that you will not feel bloated after eating. utterly delicious. winner of all the michelin stars.

i am obsessed with it. it's become my entire personality. i just want to reread it over and over and over again. it's like a studio ghibli film but in book format.

it's taken me so long to write this review because every time i just sit here and think how do i put into words how much i love this book semi-coherently, because ninety percent of the time it's just pterodactyl screeches and me clutching the book like i just stole it from the louvre.

ephram has my heart (get it? iykyk). he's so grumpy, i loved it. also, his wanting to both kick ky out and take care of him - i have never related to anyone more. the indecisiveness and the panic about the indecisiveness. he just wants to be left alone with his books and his tea and his monster boyfriend but people keep getting in the way. i love him i love him i love him so much.

and ky??? i just can't even. there's something about him that's very reminiscent of westley from the princess bride, the way he just indulges ephram's bad moods and is just like 'as you wish' whenever he does something for him or for the house. like i was giggling and kicking my feet the whole way through.

and the romance!! i was blushing. i was third wheeling. the tension. the yearning. the romance of it all. i was having the time of my life. they're so cute. that one scene in the garden (you all know the one i'm taking about) i was like damn okay okay we're not playing any more. like okay ephram turn up the heat by 3 million degrees why don’t you.

thea's writing is so atmospheric. like you are there in the room and you can feel every drip of rain and hear every crackle of fire and taste the tea (so much tea is consumed). it's just so brilliantly done. not a single word is wasted in any of her books.

the plot - perfectly paced. the entire novella takes place over a year and it's expertly done (ngl i would've read 600 pages of ephram complaining about things and ky just nodding along but that's not the point). and i was hooked the entire way through. i could not put it down. i kept trying to, but only because i didn't want it to end. like ever. like i would happily sit with this on a loop (audiobook when???) and not move ever again.

so in short, buy the book, you'll love it, i love it and we'll all be happy :)

-Scenes/environments are descriptive
-Soft banter
-Sweet and tender characters
-The cover, I love how the characters are illustrated

Quotes:
-"You're mine. You always will be."
-"You were kind to me even when you feared me. I loved you before spring stirred the soil."
-"You are the strangest thing I have ever known. But it would be stranger still to never have known you at all."
-"Thinks he'd learn to pray to the gods. If it meant he could keep this."
-"I am yours for all of time. Did I not make that clear enough?"

I enjoyed the cozy elements of this book. I think Thea did a great job with building the world, developing the side characters and showing the evolution of Ethram and Ky's relationship. I love tender characters and these two were so sweet, not only to each other, but to their neighbors too. I recommend giving this a read if you enjoy reading about sweet characters trying to uncover the mystery of power/gods, while trying to keep each other safe in a little cottage they made into a home.

Hooked from the blurb and throughly caught by the introductions, this is my second Thea Hawthorne novella and she is definitely going from strength to strength.

The worldbuilding is compelling, expanding a little on the lore of the Gardens and their healing properties, as well as adding in some mystery with the forgetfulness of their history that plagues Esk. There’s enough detail in the glossary at the start that I would think that this could be read as a stand-alone, but the entire setup is delightful once more. The memory loss especially is such a fun topic to introduce an academic character to.

The main source of sheer joy is definitely Ethram and Ky’s relationship and just sheer domestic existing with each other. Ethram is a grumpy delight, initially isolating himself due to an encounter in the Archive that left him changed, and Ky is a complete sweetheart, devotion in the purest sense. I adored every interaction they had and couldn’t put the story down. I especially enjoyed the framing of the season’s passing, it worked so nicely with the larger plot of the story.

There were so many sections of this book that I adored but I will share just one here because I love them all too much.

““Gods, and you answered the door like that?” “They looked alarmed. Curious creatures,” Ky says, unashamed.”

This novella was pure magic — gentle, aching, and almost Ghibli-esque in its atmosphere. Thea has such a gift for crafting fantasy that feels deeply personal and real; the world of Esk breathes through every rain-drenched page. You can practically smell the storm, hear the cottage creak, and feel the warmth blooming between two people who never meant to fall for each other.

Ethram and Ky have that perfect grumpy x sunshine energy. Ethram’s solitude feels bone-deep — a man ready to fade quietly into his books — until Ky quite literally storms into his life. Ky, with all his secrets and sharp edges, could so easily have been monstrous (and is, in parts)… but he’s gentled by Ethram’s please-don’t-leave-me-but-I-can’t-have-you kind of longing.

It’s very Sophie and Howl — but gay! If you love Howl’s Moving Castle, the soft magic of loving someone who shouldn’t be yours, or the ache of finding home in another person, this novella will absolutely steal your heart.

So, if you pick up one novella anytime soon, let it be Stormcaught. As a prequel to All Woven With Ivy, it’s the perfect companion piece — but it also stands beautifully on its own.

And to Thea; please never stop writing. I will never stop reading.
