Avid reader of many genres. Favorites include biography, food culture, health, and classics. I write reviews for synthesis and sharing.
I self-published a biography, Flowers of Heaven, about a family member who commits suicide in 1942. It's a woman's story--an all too familiar one from the era when women had little agency, rights, or a voice.
Flowers of Heaven is Debbie's first self-published book, a captivating story and meticulously researched biography about a soon-to-be divorced wife and mother of two and the social circumstances of her era. A book that is as much about women’s roles and rights in mid-twentieth-century Canada as it is a family’s story of loss and love.
Ivy discovers a stranger hiding in her shed one night. Determined to help him she invites him into her home and community. This story takes place leading up to Christmas and has some cute traditions. There’s also a bit of a mystery to solve and a possibility of romance. For some reason this book struck me as being a little sad.
This book is part of the Brambleton series, but it can easily be read as a standalone book. It’s perfect for reading at this time of year, and I absolutely love the cover of this book! We meet Ivy who is just getting ready for Christmas in the little village of Brambleton in North Devon. Rumours are flying around the village that a dinghy has been found on the beach, and the villagers begin to wonder who was in it. When Ivy finds a mysterious man in her shed, she remembers the promise she made many years before that she would not turn her back on anyone who needed help..
This was a lovely cosy read with lots of village life, friendships, romance and a little bit of mystery. I loved that Ivy was an older lady, and found her storyline really heart-warming. There are lots of villagers and friends of Ivy who fill out the storyline, and I loved her friendship with neighbour Fred, and of course her new house guest Omar. She certainly has her hands full, especially with her new puppy Jezrell, who likes to cause complete chaos!
The storyline flows along well and is so easy to read. The author has written some lovely characters and they feel like they could be people who you know! It’s a delightful story, and there is so much focus on community life and friendships! It’s absolutely perfect for this time of year and will certainly bring plenty of Christmas cheer! This is the first book I’ve read from this series, but will definitely be reading more!

My Opinion
A Perfect Devon Christmas is part of the Brambleton series but each book can be read as a standalone. Debbie Morrison has written a fast-paced novel with some lovely festive traditions. A charming read with plenty of community spirit.
This book is part of the Brambleton series, and I've just discovered it with this book. I'll soon need to rectify that with a read of the others. A very heartwarming and emotional book, as some do tend to be in tender holiday reads. Ivy hasn't had things quite working out the way she thought she would in life and she's satisfied now with her energetic pup and neighbor Fred for company. Safe, reliable no surprises. It's nice to know what you can count on. But finding a stranger hiding on her property that she knows nothing about is far from humdrum and the usual. The more we get to know this person Ivy's compassionate nature is obvious and the more I rooted for this person though there was a bit of sadness attached to this person as well. Lots of characters and personalities including the town's busybodies who I just laughed at as we all know someone like this. I enjoyed how the story wrapped up and now that I've discovered this author I need to read more of her books and visit Brambleton again soon.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
This book is actually part of a four book series called Brambleton series and each book can very easily be read as a stand alone but of course are always much better when enjoyed as part of the whole series.
I was pulled in to this book right from the very beginning, it was definitely a page-turner and it did not let me go again until i had read every last page.
It was such a heartwarming Christmas romance and was set in a beautifully charming seaside village and was perfect for some armchair travelling.
I thoroughly enjoyed this cosy, slow-burn festive romance, it was a feel-good and festive escape, celebrates community, was an emotional, later-in-life romance, had small-town vibes and was also so uplifting and magical too.
After i had finished this wonderful story it left me with a very happy, full heart and a warm and cosy fuzzy feeling too - perfect!!
This is the third book in the Brambleton series by Debbie Morrison, as with the others this can be read as a standalone.
Ivy discovers a stranger taking shelter in her shed, and remembering the promise she made to never turn her back on someone in need, she welcomes him into her home and community. There is a secret that Omar is hiding though and with the help of her close friend and neighbour, Fred, Ivy sets out to discover what it is.
Set in the lead up to Christmas we get to see the festive traditions of the village. Ivy is having to face them from a new perspective as she adjusts to her new retired life. In true village fashion there is a great sense of community as they celebrate the season together.
There is a lovely bunch of characters in this book, some new and some we have met before in the series, who come together to help Omar and there is also a little Christmas romance.
I'm on the understanding that the book is part of a series called Brambleton? Why have I never heard of this series before?
A Perfect Devon Christmas was just that...PERFECT! I fell in love with everything about it.
Brambleton sounds gorgeous and the festive charm was the icing on the cake. The characters were absolutely delightful, and their spirit - both community and Christmas - was heartwarming.
I struggled with this book. I felt it didn’t flow easily. Was interesting, but the characters were frustrating at times. Felt the ending was a bit rushed and could have given more. As if something was left out.
3 ⭐️ I’m a bit conflicted about reviewing this, showed a lot of contemporary issues and attitudes. Didn’t find it very light hearted and could easily be a standalone rather than a series.
