Roman adapté au cinéma sous le titre Marche ou crève (The long walk) (sortie le 01/10/25).Garraty, un jeune adolescent natif du Maine, va concourir pour "La Longue Marche", une compétition qui compte cent participants. Cet événement est très attendu. Il sera retransmis à la télévision, suivi par des milliers de personnes. Mais ce n'est pas une Marche comme les autres, plutôt un jeu sans foi ni loi... Garraty a tout intérêt à gagner. Le contraire pourrait lui coûter cher. Très cher.

At the beginning of Stephen King's career, the general view among publishers was that an author was limited to one book per year, since publishing more would be unacceptable to the public. King therefore wanted to write under another name, in order to increase his publication without over-saturating the market for the King "brand". He convinced his publisher, Signet Books, to print these novels under a pseudonym.
In his introduction to The Bachman Books, King states that adopting the nom de plume Bachman was also an attempt to make sense out of his career and try to answer the question of whether his success was due to talent or luck. He says he deliberately released the Bachman novels with as little marketing presence as possible and did his best to "load the dice against" Bachman. King concludes that he has yet to find an answer to the "talent versus luck" question, as he felt he was outed as Bachman too early to know. The Bachman book Thinner (1984) sold 28,000 copies during its initial run—and then ten times as many when it was revealed that Bachman was, in fact, King.
The pseudonym King originally selected (Gus Pillsbury) is King's maternal grandfather's name, but at the last moment King changed it to Richard Bachman. Richard is a tribute to crime author Donald E. Westlake's long-running pseudonym Richard Stark. (The surname Stark was later used in King's novel The Dark Half, in which an author's malevolent pseudonym, "George Stark", comes to life.) Bachman was inspired by Bachman–Turner Overdrive, a rock and roll band King was listening to at the time his publisher asked him to choose a pseudonym on the spot.
King provided biographical details for Bachman, initially in the "about the author" blurbs in the early novels. Known "facts" about Bachman were that he was born in New York, served a four-year stint in the Coast Guard, which he then followed with ten years in the merchant marine. Bachman finally settled down in rural central New Hampshire, where he ran a medium-sized dairy farm, writing at night. His fifth novel was dedicated to his wife, Claudia Inez Bachman, who also received credit for the bogus author photo on the book jacket. Other "facts" about the author were revealed in publicity dispatches from Bachman's publishers: the Bachmans had one child, a boy, who died in an unfortunate, Stephen King-ish type accident at the age of six, when he fell through a well and drowned. In 1982, a brain tumour was discovered near the base of Bachman's brain; tricky surgery removed it. After Bachman's true identity was revealed, later publicity dispatches (and about the author blurbs) revealed that Bachman died suddenly in late 1985 of "cancer of the pseudonym, a rare form of schizonomia".
King dedicated Bachman's early books—Rage (1977), The Long Walk (1979), Roadwork (1981), and The Running Man (1982)—to people close to him. The link between King and his shadow writer was exposed after a Washington, D.C. bookstore clerk, Steve Brown, noted similarities between the writing styles of King and Bachman. Brown located publisher's records at the Library of Congress which included a document naming King as the author of one of Bachman's novels. Brown wrote to King's publishers with a copy of the documents he had uncovered, and asked them what to do. Two weeks later, King telephoned Brown personally and suggested he write an article about how he discovered the truth, allowing himself to be interviewed. King has taken full ownership of the Bachman name on numerous occasions, as with the republication of the first four Bachman titles as The Bachman Books: Four Early Novels by Stephen King in 1985. « Marche ou crève », livre de Stephen King publié sous le pseudonyme Richard Bachman.
Ce livre me fut personnellement difficile à surmonter, si bien que je n’avais quasiment rien retenu de ma première lecture.
J’ai alors commencé par me dire que le livre n’était pas pour moi. Mais poussé par la curiosité, ainsi que par le film sorti le premier octobre 2025, j’ai repris cette route avec plus de patience et des prises de note. À terme, je pense avoir compris d’où m’était venu ma première impression.
Cette lecture m’a mentalement épuisé.
Je ne sais pas par quel ensorcèlement King s’y est pris, mais la traversée de ces lignes avait lentement dévoré et digéré mon énergie, si bien qu’il m’arrivait d’avoir des égarements, de mélanger les noms des personnages, d’avoir eu besoin de relire certains passages, jusqu’à ce que l’arrivée sonnât presque comme une délivrance.
En somme, l’on puit dire que j’étais en empathie avec Raymond Garraty.
Malgré cette épreuve, je ne suis pas mécontent de ma relecture. J’ai pus ainsi comprendre ma froide mais vague première impression.
Raymond Davis Garraty, notre protagoniste, accepte de s’engager dans cette folle marche mais je n’ai pas réussi à me rappeler de la raison l’ayant motivé (peut-être n’en avait-il pas). Les motivations des personnages sont pour la plupart obscures d’ailleurs.
L’histoire est longue et m’a laissé une impression de répétition à certains moments, si bien que même les morts de personnages ne deviennent, pour la majorité, que des informations que l’on oublie rapidement. À côté, les événements sortant de cette situation initiale deviennent rapidement marquant.
En ça, nous marchons dans les pas de notre protagoniste.
Ma plus grosse interrogation concernant la fin, donc.
Je ne suis pas certain de l’avoir compris.
Après une lecture, une relecture, puis une troisième pour être sûr, j’ai cru comprendre après tout ces efforts Garraty était emporté par la folie et mourrait également, ce qui serait raccord avec les sombres conclusions de l’auteur.
Malgré tout, elle m’a laissée avec un goût d’inachevée. S’éclipsant avec ma libre interprétation.
Et je dois bien avouer ne pas avoir aimé cette fin. Pas dans le sens où je la trouverais foncièrement mauvaise, mais j’aurais aimé plus de clarté accompagnée de cette description propre à King, plutôt que cette dernière ligne fugace et avare.
En conclusion, ce ne sera pas mon livre préféré de l’auteur mais il reste bon (malgré cette fin).
S’il vous intéresse, je vous encourage à tenter l’expérience. De préférence assis confortablement et à tête reposée.

C'était mon premier livre de Stephen King et je l'ai plutôt apprécié.
L'horreur est bien travaillée, les personnages sont plutôt profonds et le scénario très original.
J'ai toutefois trouvé la fin un peu bâclée en comparaison avec le début du livre où on s'attarde beaucoup sur la mort de personnages moins importants (ce n'est pas un problème en soi mais le déséquilibre est un peu regrettable). Bien que cette fin laisse pour moi quelques questions en suspend elle a réussi à m'arracher une larme pour un personnage qui ne m'avait pas particulièrement touchée jusque là.
Néanmoins, ce qui fait selon perdre des points à ce livre est la représentation des femmes. Leur quasi absence du scénario de base n'est pas un problème en soi et est même plutôt logique. Toutefois, lorsque des femmes ont été mentionnées dans ce livre elles étaient toujours (et je dis bien TOUJOURS) sexualisées. Il ne m'avait jamais été aussi flagrant qu'un livre avait été écrit par un homme. Je pense que le lecteur aurait survécu si Stephen King avait décrit une femme sans parler de ses seins, mais cela reste mon avis...

4eme livre de mon challenge, quatrième livre de Stephen King que je lis et le PREMIER que j’aime bien !!!
Vraiment une super lecture. Toute la journée en cours j’y pensais et j’avais hâte de pouvoir le reprendre dans le métro et le soir chez moi.
Une lecture simple mais vraiment agréable.
Je l’ai lu pour ensuite aller le voir au cinéma (je l’ai fini 30min avant ma séance)et PITIÉ LISEZ LE ET SKIPPEZ CE FILM.
Vraiment une super lecture. Toute la journée en cours j’y pensais et j’avais hâte de pouvoir le reprendre dans le métro et le soir chez moi.
