Two strangers. One storm. A connection neither of them saw coming.
Corey’s day has gone from bad to worse. First, he loses his job. Then his home. Now he’s crawling through a blizzard in a beat-up car, hoping to sneak into his uncle’s empty house for a lonely Christmas in front of a big-screen TV. But the universe isn’t done with him yet. He’s lost, the snow’s getting heavier—and there’s a truck riding his bumper like it’s personal.
Tal can’t escape his office Christmas party fast enough—especially after a humiliating nickname from his school days rears its ugly head. All he wants is peace and quiet at the Airbnb he’s rented for the holidays. No friends, no fuss, no festive drama. But when he sees a truck barrelling towards him, all he can do is swerve, hang on tight and hope.
The hit and run leaves Corey and Tal stranded in the middle of a snowy nowhere. With no help in sight, their only choice is to walk. Thank goodness for the isolated hotel they finally stumble across when they just can’t go on anymore. It seems like salvation. But something isn’t quite right, and that isn’t just because when the doors open, it looks as if Christmas has exploded.
Warnings Magical realism. Age gap. Road traffic accident. Neurodivergent representation including an autistic main character. Reference to past trauma as a young adult and mental health care. Brief mention of suicide ideation. Loss of parents. Sexual assault—not rape (off page). A hotel straight out of a Hallmark movie. And snow! An amazing amount of snow, in England, at Christmas. Unheard of.
The main characters are navigating what they need in a relationship, which at times gently explores themes related to kink. There are references to BDSM labels, but nothing explicit or intense—no hardcore content, and nothing that should feel unsafe to most readers.
Barbara Elsborg lives in Kent in the south of England. She always wanted to be a spy, but having confessed to everyone without them even resorting to torture, she decided it was not for her. Volcanology scorched her feet. A morbid fear of sharks put paid to marine biology. So instead, she spent several years successfully selling cyanide.
After dragging up two rotten, ungrateful children and frustrating her sexy, devoted, wonderful husband (who can now stop twisting her arm) she finally has time to conduct an affair with an electrifying plugged-in male, her laptop.
Her books feature quirky heroines and bad boys, and she hopes they are as much fun to read as they are to write.
Good news first: endearing MCs; age gap; neurospicy rep (autism for Cal, ADHD for Corey); Christmas feels galore; supernatural element that asks you to believe (in fate, parallel dimensions, dream worlds - take your pick); dual POV; adorable cover (pink bunny hat for the win!); lovely epilogue and afterword.
Bad news next: random, unnecessary BDSM "theme" that clogged the story (all the tears Corey shed about no one taking him seriously as a Dom were hella melodramatic); the chapters the men spent at the hotel dragged after a while (the murder mystery was just weird); why was Tal's friend Louis such a colossal douchebag? I wanted to punch him in the face.
From their initial accidental hit and run meeting to their coincidental one room booking in a mysterious hotel, to the fun holiday activities tinged with their own distinct personalities and hidden desires, Corey and Tal made a unique and unlikely pair, but somehow met at the most precious and important of moments. 🫶🏻
Corey offered his heart on a platter- well, not his heart, but his eagerness to offer everything to make his precious someone feel so safe and loved and cherished. His vulnerability and passion was the exact boon Tal needed to feel more comfortable in his own skin. 🫂 How he'd lost his self-worth due to a bad break-up that made him ache with longing to have this fragile young man's devotion and sincerity all for him.
“I told my biscuits a secret but they crumbled under pressure.”
C'mon, I know it made you laugh. 😄
Their honest confessions were beautifully set against a snow canopy of fun and frolic and festive cheer, hidden away in a place made almost entirely for them to heal their broken edges. ❄️ Tal's own insecurity over his neurodivergent tendencies that he felt ashamed for was also depicted in a believable and genuine light. I feel old. I feel new. It was nice to see Corey so protective and understanding of him - how his sparkle brought that color back into his soul. 🩵🩵
So for that reason, I think the BDSM touches gave their relationship an extra oomph, if not valid touch to why it was integral to the development of Corey and Tai's growth, especially concerning their respective histories and fractured spirits. 🥺
“I want you—I mean him to come apart because of what I do to him... I want it to be love between him and me. For… Forever.”
It gave them a purpose of fulfillment to overcome their traumatic pasts and even deepen their bond. For how they have both lost certain inhibitions and trusts within themselves - personally and intimately - the exploration and expression of these kinks allowed them to be truer to themselves. ❤️🩹
Corey's fierce want of longing for something more intimate and determination in helping Tal learn to feel again by never hesitating to voice all that he wants aloud, knowing that Tal would never judge him for it, was the trust Tal needed to regain his faith in himself. It's not hesitancy, but the expectancy of whether or not they're reading each other right and if it's meant to be.
“Is that condition that makes your eyes leak a problem again?” “You do know I made that up.” “I have the same condition. I just have caught it from you.”
Some of their repartee became a bit predictable and all too familiar to Elsborg's signature style. It wasn't so apparent at first but sadly as the story progressed Corey's behavior and restrained inner comments became more and more similar to Elsborg's previous characters *cough Jonty cough*. 😐
Btw, what was Louis' deal? There's being protective and then there's overbearing without context and he had it in spades! 🙄 I swear, he just did not know when to back off or stop jumping to conclusions without even knowing the facts! I don't care if he's Tal's bff, his personality was a major turn-off. I don't know how he was lucky to snag someone as good as Benjamin. 😮💨
“My head says it was impossible. But not my heart.”
Still, my heart felt full upon seeing them reach the end of their road. Tender lovin' and heated affection that made Tal and Corey Light Up each other's worlds, somehow finding each other in the most unlikely of places, but knowing innately that's exactly where they were meant to be. 🩵🔆🤍
Bonus:
“You are my sunshine. Those words… Now I know. Now I remember.”
Jefferson's short story was bittersweet. It was nice to get a little background into his role of mending hearts at Solas Suas, this way station in another plane, with a mysterious guest's arrival. and omg, is there an actual story to his story? Because wow, that was both heartbreaking and intense. 😥 My heart went with you. For the heart remembers what it could not forget let go - a feeling engulfing him like fire but without pain. A soft and spicy moment that proved that even unto death, love survives. ☺️
Tal is recovering from a clusterfuck of a relationship with an awful boyfriend. Yearning to be alone he rented an Airbnb for the holidays. Leaving behind his awful colleagues who gossip and call him names behind his back. Old hurt is never far away. He was never good enough for any guy.
Corey quit his job after being falsely accused of stealing from a customer. With quitting he also lost his sleeping place. In his battered car, he will travel to his uncle’s place.
Fate decided both guys ended up in a car accident, away from civilization, in a snowstorm. The truck that hit them (separately) drove off. Slightly injured both traveled on foot through the snow, trying to find a place to stay for the night. At last, they found a cozy hotel, with only one room free. They are stuck for the coming time.
My goodness, it was such a great read, it got better and better the further the story went.
The hotel organized diverse entertainment, fun, and silly at times.
Corey and Tal both fall under the neurodivergent umbrella, with ADHD and autism. I found it absolutely wonderfully represented! In a very gentle (but hot) way, there are some d/s activities. I loved how this developed.
There was a touch of magic in this story that was downright stunning. I was surprised by the direction the story took. Let me tell you, I love surprises!
The story has fun and seriousness. Both characters are so endearing and lovable. They are quite opposite; there’s an age gap. One has a well-paid job as an architect, and the other is unemployed and struggling financially. One is a big guy, and the other quite fragile-looking. On other levels, they have similarities. Overall a wonderfully written holiday story!
Barbara Elsborg is so skilled at crafting a story and Light Up is a gorgeous holiday romance! Elsborg also weaves in some magic and drama that will tug on your heartstrings. This book left me with such a feeling of hope and happiness. Light Up should be number one on your holiday reading list.
These men are at a real low point in their lives, and so desperately in need of each other it is perfect to watch. Opposites in every way, but a match made in heaven. And heaven (or some place like it) is what brings them together.
Barbara Elsborg can describe a holiday event like no author I've ever read, and the magical "hotel" where Tal and Corey find themselves sounds just breathtaking. I'd love to find a place like that and get lost for a week or so.
Soul-stirring, and uplifting in all the best ways, Light Up is an instant classic and one that I've already added to my holiday re-read shelf!
an advanced reader copy of Light Up was graciously provided by the author at my request, all opinions are my own and this is my honest review
Ohhh, I loved this. It was magical... literally and figuratively. The characters were wonderful, as was the plot. Did I see the twist coming a mile away? Yes. Do I care? No. I adored everything about this. ... except Louis. I fricken hated him. But everything else. Loved
Barbara is a new-to-me author and what better time to get introduced to her work? Holiday MM romance with autism rep? Yes, please!
I enjoyed reading this book, its unique because of the hotel these two stumble upon after their crash. I don't want to spoil anything but I found that whole aspect to be immensely detailed, well described, and it was absolutely magical!
At first glance you wouldn't think Tal and Corey go together, there's an age gap between the two, and while Corey thrives in chaos and holiday cheer, Tal does not. I absolutely loved this opposites attract romance story, its probably one of the most unique holiday stories I've read. Its just so adorable and I loved reading about all the holiday activities both of these men participated in.
The growth both of these characters went through was immense, I enjoyed being able to see both of them grow more comfortable with themselves and standing up for what they want. That moment where Corey stood up to Louis was amazing! I was mentally cheering him on for not only standing up for himself, but also for standing up for his relationship with Tal as well.
The relationship building was so cute and these two have so much chemistry and depth between them. Their banter was amusing to read, they exchanged barbs, witty remarks, corny jokes, and also had heartfelt and raw conversations that helped make their relationship feel more real.
All in all this was a fantastic read and I wish there was a Solas Suas in real life because I would definitely go! Cookie decorating, bingo, painting?? Sign me up!!
I love Barbara Elsborg’s boys. Tal and Corey are perfect together. Just perfect.
I adored Corey. He’s funny and silly with a touch of sadness. He’s also happy go lucky but he doesn’t have anyone in his corner. He’s not maudlin about it though, he just gets on with his life and makes the best of it, although he is down on his luck. Luck which is in short supply when his car is involved in an accident in a snow blizzard.
Tal’s car is also involved in the accident, and together the two find shelter in the most amazing and unbelievably brilliant hotel. When you really fancy stroganoff for dinner, it will be on the menu. Want champagne in the hot tub, you’ve got it. I want to stay in the Solas Suas hotel. I would want a perfectly mixed French martini, penne Arrabbiata, cheese and biscuits. Ooh can I have an Indian head massage, followed by a concert played by a string quartet too. Anything is possible at Solas Suas.
Light Up is a feel good, Christmassy story.
Stop the bus. I need to revise this review because there’s no fish and chips. I repeat. NO FISH AND CHIPS. Caviar does not count.
All I can say this book is not what I was expecting and wow does it put you through all the emotions. Tal & Corey both on their way to escape end up in a car wreck that changes everything. They land at a hotel where they learn to let each other in and heal from their pasts. Barbara does a beautiful job in their autism rep, where it didn't feel forced but is what it is. When they are rescued from their ordeal and real life comes crashing in thats when thIngs get real. Their time at the hotel enabled them to fight for the future they deserve. A unique holiday read that I can say is unlike any others I've read.
CALL ME FRIGGIN SURPRISED, Y'ALL. this book took me completely by surprise. such a unique twist!!!!! oh, how my heart absolutely ACHED for Corey. but Tal..while he irked me the first half, he was TOO amazing the second half.
i devoured this one. a snowy accident, a mysterious hotel, only one room, a baby dom/pleasure sub with neurodivergencies. and that TWIST.
seriously, so good. the writing is so engaging i fell into the story. i can't wait to read more from this author!
I've avoided all the mystical aspects of Christmas. So let’s say as this book evolved I started to get an itchy feeling. But… Whatever was in this story it was handled thankfully with a lite touch and not all consuming heavy hand. The lite touch of the unexpected was just enough.
This book started off very well; the author built this world and took the reader along. It was around 40% into the book that I felt the author started losing momentum, and the book began to lose my attention. My main complaint is that the author tried to make it a romantic comedy (which I love), but the issue is that the author isn't funny. So, the characters were laughing and saying that the other one made them smile so much, but the "jokes" were not funny at all. And I do not see how Tal could stand all of that talking. I would have run far away if I were him; that other guy never stops talking, and none of it pertained to anything or anyone.
I love Barbara’s books, period. I adore her romantic stories about men who are flawed and have different insecurities in their own eyes and the eyes of others. They are so complicated and fragile, and it hurts their lives, but in reality, they are just human and struggle with those annoying inner voices that bring them down.
This book is about sweet dreams versus tough reality; it’s about two men who are having trouble navigating murky waters. dealing with anxiety, being neurodiverse, and still praying for someone to love them, the way they are, and accept them unconditionally.
Life was not kind to Corey; he went through a tragic, traumatic experience and closed himself off to any chance of having friends and attempting to find his person. He has the idea of who he is, who he wants to be, and because he is young and inexperienced, it’s hard for him to find a perceptive submissive who will look beyond his age and looks, and will understand that Corey could be a perfect part of the relationship. Corey is beautiful, quirky, has a great mind, and never lets anybody boss him around, defending himself with perfect, sharp wit and humor. He is nurturing and wise, but keeps his emotions guarded until he meets Tal. He is very alone, and it truly breaks my heart watching him get to meet that perfect man that he dreamt about and almost lose him. I admire how he fights for his chance of happiness, not bowing in front of the strangest circumstances of this meeting, and how strong he can withstand the trust issues with Tal’s close friends, showing them how much he cares and that he is committed to taking care of Tal’s needs.
Tal to me is just precious. He is a brilliant architect, very sharp-minded, and still has the softest core; his soul is begging for someone to see him and give him the love that he deserves. It’s especially tough for him to trust again after being hurt by his ex-Dom, who betrayed him, physically abused him, and left a huge emotional scar on Tal’s heart. His journey towards healing and opening up to love again is essential to his story.
The details of their meeting and getting to survive a scary accident, almost dying in it, and then getting to safety and comfort of a special place called Solas Suas, the safe haven that they could no longer find after waking up in the hospital, and decided to keep and cherish as their beautiful dream, were short of miraculous. There, our guys found out how perfect they are for each other, how compatible they are, how much joy they can have, and how much love can change them.
I loved the times when Corey was using his never-ending supply of jokes to make Tal laugh, how Corey was doing everything possible to make Tal never want to spend Christmas alone, both for Tal and himself. How Tal became responsive to Corey’s attempts, how he started to see the light this young guy was bringing into his life, and how much pleasure they could derive if he would only give a chance for their time together to turn into a permanent, beautiful relationship.
You get struck right into the “feels” by this story. You might cry a little, you will laugh a lot, you will feel heated by intimate times, this story will light you up, it will end on such a perfect note, almost like when Corey played the piano and won over everyone’s hearts.
Tal’s friends, Louis and Mojo (Benjamin), serve as his protectors, but eventually, they step aside—albeit reluctantly in Louis’s case—allowing Corey to take on that role. In contrast, Corey’s uncle and his lady partner will never get in my good sights; they are just assholes, yes, they are!
Let’s finish on a bright note- read this book for the beautiful, heartfelt Christmas story it is, enjoy a romance, friendship, stunning landscapes that it happens to exist in, and check Barbara’s other Christmas stories too, they are too good to be missed!
Feeling lonely in the big wide world is bad at the best of times, but during the Christmas period it really sucks. Both of these men are victims of the so called " the best time of the year " syndrome.
If you are on the spectrum and come across as cold and socially inept and want to hide rather than mingle at your works Christmas party then run I'd say.
If life has let you down badly and you are barely holding on but want to keep your dignity when accused of a crime you did not do, then run I'd say.
Both Tal and Corey are escaping Christmas and running away when they are caught up in a snow storm and end up in a car crash. From this point on the story turns into a magical mystery where our guys get to smile, have joy, connect and get a sense of belonging. One minute they were in a crash fighting for their lives...but were they really? What happened in that car?
This is not a fluffy seasonal read, but our guys get their happily ever after even if they cannot tell you how. I loved how they both overcame terrible trauma, self hatred, insensitivity, discrimination and much more, this is a well written story.
There's always at least a touch of magic in a Barbara Christmas story, and this is no exception. Any good story requires a suspension of disbelief, and this is no different. This is Corey and Tal's story and when we meet them they're at quite different places in life. Corey is homeless, jobless and with a family that doesn't care, is facing a Christmas alone. Tal too is having a solo Christmas but in his case it's through choice after a bad breakup and wanting some alone time to process.
After a car accident the two are thrown together in a mysterious hotel and Tal is attracted by Corey's bright and bubbly personality and love for Christmas. There's more than a little magic in the air though, and even though I'd kind of guessed what was really happening, I still really enjoyed this. I liked both Corey and Tal very much - didn't care so much for one of Tal's friends though - and I REALLY didn't care for Corey's co-workers (but then you're not supposed to, I think).
This is full of charm, christmas cheer yet with a serious edge as it does deal with some fairly heavy topics too. It's another great Christmas story from Barbara and I know it is coming to the festive season when I get her new story. I wasn't disappointed this time either.
This one has magical realism, which is usually not my thing, but really worked here. It’s actually going to be very difficult to talk about this book without giving anything away, and readers would definitely want to unravel the surprises themselves. So we have Tal, an architect on the spectrum, who overhears two of his (jerky) colleagues making fun of him. It’s not the end of the world, as his boss appreciates him, but it’s enough that he just wants to get out of that office party. He has plans for a quiet, calm Christmas in an AirBNB by himself. He stops by his friends, Louis and Benjamin, who are both good friends of Tal’s and are a couple. Louis oversteps HUGE at one point and lost a little for me there, but Benjamin (Mojo) remained lovely throughout. I admit, I was pissed at Louis and I wanted Tal to be more pissed. Corey is a server who is set up by another server that he turned down. His boss is conveniently seeing that other one, so Corey is dumped on and his quits. Since the job came with a bedsit, he also loses his home. Corey doesn’t have anyone except a not-so-great uncle, but he’s heading off in his beater car to his uncle’s house to spend Christmas alone. There’s a big snowstorm, so it’s not the best idea but he doesn’t have much choice. While they are both on the road a truck comes along driving too fast for conditions and ends up hitting them both. Tal is stuck in his car and Corey barely gets him out before it starts on fire. Because either has cell service, and Corey’s car has a broken windshield so isn’t a shelter, they decide to walk to lights that Tal remembers seeing. After an excruciating walk, they end up at a hotel, Solas Suas, with a lovely room, and so many activities. I loved seeing Corey get to try new things (especially the cocktails!) and Tal step out of his comfort zone (bingo, anyone?). Both of these men carry some big baggage with them. Tal was incredibly unsupported by his parents because of the autism. He was also in an abusive relationship in the past, and it’s made him more closed off than ever. Corey had a tragedy happen in his past, which he carries big guilt over. So these are two wounded souls. There is a warning for the book “The main characters are navigating what they need in a relationship, which at times gently explores themes related to kink. There are references to BDSM labels, but nothing explicit or intense—no hardcore content, and nothing that should feel unsafe to most readers.” I think this understates things a bit, because while there aren’t any scenes that would make anyone feel triggered, the D/s aspect is a big part of the story. There is a lot of talk about it and occurs in some scenes. So be aware if that isn’t something you enjoy. There’s so much more to the story but spoilers would really ruin it. There is a bonus short story, In Between, that goes along with it and has a little more about Solas Suas, and what a lovely thing that is. Definitely can’t be read before Light Up! And the reason for the book title makes so much sense Reviewed for Love Bytes Reviews
Holiday standalone. Mystical. Age gap. Neurodivergent representation. Light BDSM. Only one bed. Forced proximity. Dual POV.
Corey just lost his job and his bedsit, so he is traveling to his uncle’s empty house when he’s in a horrible car accident. Tal is escaping the holidays to stay alone in a vacation rental and is involved in the same car accident as Corey, so they trudge together towards an isolated hotel in order to find shelter.
There’s certainly something special about the hotel Corey and Tal find, and as they are forced to room together they spend time getting to know each other and enjoying holiday activities together. Corey and Tal have a huge amount of honest communication that leads to shared interests, but neither is sure of looking toward the future when they are in the unusual bubble of the hotel. I enjoyed Corey’s joyful and positive determination as it draws Tal into intimate conversations and fun. Both these men have faced difficulties both in the present and past, but they have a special connection which is so hopeful and perfect for them; I rooted for them to find a way to be together. This was a special and sweet holiday read. 4.5 rounded up
3.5 stars - a cute, feel-good to read. 🥰 I haven't read much by this author, but it seems like every book I do pick up by her has a character exactly like Corey in personality, temperament, and banter. While that's fun, I can only take it in small doses, so this short holiday read was perfect for me in that regard.
I agree with another reviewer that the D/s aspect felt a little bit out of place, but not as much as I'd feared when reading the blurb. Both of them absolutely deserved each other, and the touch of magic worked really well with the holiday theme, in my opinion. ✨
I can't say I appreciated
Still, the book did exactly what I wanted this time of year: made me smile with some happy holiday feels. 🎄☺️❄️
5* A feel-good tale that's believable despite the subject matter.
This book is and isn't your 'normal' Xmas tale. I mean, it is if you believe that there are more things out there than we know/see/imagine, but it's not if you're after the usual sugary-sweet stuff full of kisses and romps under the mistletoe. Come to think of it, I don't think mistletoe makes an appearance in it.
How to review this without Spoilers? Hmm. Well, try to have an open mind and believe in the spirit of Xmas, and that an inexperienced young man with a sad past, who's still somehow capable of dreaming, can take on an older guy and help him escape his self-imposed emotional prison. And believe in the magic of Solas Suas...which might just be real?

Once again the story telling ability of this author has held me spellbound. I loved how this has a bit of a twist to the usual Christmas romance offerings and kept me fully engaged and entertained from start to finish. Corey’s life has not been an easy one whilst Tal is emotionally bruised following a bad relationship. These two wonderfull men come into each others lives after a hit and run accident which leads to a life changing experience for them both. The road to their HEA is not without some difficulty but nothing Corey and Tal can’t overcome and my heart was all warm and sappy for them. So suspend your disbelief like they did, accept that all is not as it seems in this world and be entertained by this unique take on the Christmas romance
I feel like with most authors, you sometimes have a hit and sometimes a miss, but lately Barbara Elsborg just never has a miss. Absolutely loved this one, it's the perfect Christmas story. Some parts of it reminded me a bit of The Fall (if you've already read Light Up, you know what I mean), but with a twist. But overall it was just incredibly sweet, heartfelt, sexy (loved it!!), fluffy with the right amount of angst and Christmassy (what else when half the book is spent in a Hallmark Hotel).
This is my honest review in exchange for an ARC provided by the author.
Who doesn't love a mystery? And a survival story? And a hot romance? You get it ALL i Barbara Elsborg's latest, Light Up. I was intrigued from the first, but then, I'm a total sucker for a misunderstood hot guy. Throw in a collision on a snowy road, and this has all the hallmarks (pun intended) of a classic meet-cute. Except it's not, not really. Follow Tal's and Corey's weird adventures in a most unlikely hotel, with a most unlikely cast of characters. I stayed up into the wee hours to finish this one. Barbara Elsborg is always original, always funny as all get out, and spot on when it comes to the spicy bits! Wrap yourself in a blanket, sip from your mug of cocoa, and enjoy one unique Christmas story!!
Magical realism is usually not my thing but Barbara Elsborg did her magic again and made me fall in love with this story and all the characters. It's very original and imaginative. Not to mention that it's that time of the year again. We all need a little magic in our lives on occasion and in this case Corey and Tal need all the help they can get because the chances they'd meet in real life and also realize that they are perfect for each other without a little help are close to zero. A little tip. When you reach The end keep reading. There's a link to short Jefferson's free story there that I enjoyed immensely.
Tal had a terrible relationship, only has a few true friends, and just wants to spend the holiday alone. Corey- sweet man is now jobless and homeless after a lie is told. He’s off to his uncles house in hopes of having a pls cd to stay for Christmas.
Fate believes these two belong together and boy does it bring them together in a whirlwind meet and time spent experiencing fun and things Tal could never imagine doing.
Barbara did a wonderful job portraying the autism and ADHD. There is a light d/s which both men engage in and done in a safe way.
This is an age gap, financial gap, opposites attract story that left me with a smile on my face and feeling so in Love with Tal and Corey.
This was my second book by Barbara Elsborg and the second to make me cry.
The first 2/3 of this book I absolutely loved. It was filled with Christmas magic and joy.
At the 68% I almost DNF’d but since I’d made it that far, I decided to continue. I’m glad I was able to push through and finish because I ended up loving this. (This was of no fault of the author, this was on me.)
I absolutely loved Corey and Tal and the neurodivergence rep. I was rooting for both characters the entire time.
I hope to find my own Solas Suas one day and make my own awful reindeer painting.
Corey and Tal are both on the same road fleeing their lives for a peaceful holiday. Suddenly they're both involved in an accident. As they gather themselves, they decide to trudge to a nearby hotel. The hotel is not what it appears to be, it's hiding a magical secret. They have to share a room and this leads to them getting to know one another. They share a little bubble, safe from the world, and enjoy the holiday together. Slowly they realize they're perfect for each other.
This was a delightful book with wonderful characters. Tal is an awkward soul so damaged by a previous relationship. Corey it’s just what he needs although Tal doesn’t know it yet. The way they meet is certainly harrowing. The magical twist in the story is not exactly my thing, but that’s me not the book. Tal’s friend Louis is a protective twerp, but who can resist Corey? He reminds me of Jonty Bloom. What’s not to love? I enjoyed the whole book thoroughly. It’s full of Christmas spirit. Barbara comes through again. Such a dependable author. Enthusiastically recommended.
A heartwarming and emotional story that exceeded my expectations. Barbara expertly blends romance with magic, creating a truly delightful read. This is a feel good book centred on the comfort of Christmas. The story follows Corey and Tal, who are brought together by an accident during a heavy snowstorm. Both are at a low point in their lives, Corey has lost his job and home, while Tal is navigating life after a bad relationship, emotional abuse and has autism. After a hit and run leaves them stranded, they stumble across a mysterious, isolated hotel, which makes for a magical Christmas miracle, with a beautiful twist. The guys and their backstories are both compelling and sad, full of highs and lows. I was left feeling a mix of sadness, relief, and pure happiness for them. Corey and Tal's immediate connection is incredibly sweet. It's a joy to see vulnerable Corey and big hearted Tal find a beautiful and happy love, becoming stronger together. The concept of magical realism, a mysterious hotel, and a brilliant plot twist truly sets this apart from a typical Christmas romance. I absolutely loved it.
Warnings: Magical realism. Age gap. Road traffic accident. Neurodivergent representation including an autistic main character. Reference to past trauma as a young adult and mental health care. Brief mention of suicide ideation. Loss of parents. Sexual assault, not rape (off page). Low level kink is also present.
I received an ARC of this story which in no way influenced my opinion.
The atmosphere of this book is so Hallmark movie coded. The hotel is beautiful and whimsical, touching on an element of fantasy. Tal and Corey are exactly what the other needs. Their relationship is well-developed and seeing them become more comfortable in themselves was so rewarding. Great banter, a heartfelt romance, and an absolutely magical holiday atmosphere! This book is completely wonderful.
