Fortune's Mistake: Fortune's Creek Book 2

Rate this book
Someone wants to force Emma Shaver out of Fortune’s Creek. And she has no idea why.

Emma’s new store is her dream. The last thing she needs is a flirty firefighting landlord determined to make her his. Emma doesn’t go for the tall, dark, and funny type. He frustrates her, and for some reason, she keeps returning for more.

But then her store is sabotaged, and she finds threatening notes under the door. Worse, someone is feeding her troubles to the town’s gossip mill, keeping customers away.

Emma may dislike her landlord, but when the fires start, she knows the firefighter next door is the only one who can keep her safe.

Aiden Taggert knows to stay away.
Aiden spent the summer developing a crush on his new tenant. When he asks her on a date, Aiden realizes she doesn’t care for his easy-going ways or sense of humor. That’s fine, because he’s busy with his car restoration business and volunteer firefighter job.

They can be strangers, as long as she pays her rent on time. If she wants to stick to her wallflower life, that’s not his problem.

Aiden’s content to ignore her, up until he finds her crying on the floor and learns about the threats she received.

Emma believes he’s irresponsible, but she’ll learn he’s also a protector, and he doesn’t walk away. Aiden will enter the fire to save her — risking himself and his heart — in the process.

A lovable rogue falls for a fish out of water in this small-town romantic suspense set in the world of Fortune’s Creek. Inside, you’ll find angst, found family, a dash of humor, spice, a dual POV, and a lot of heart. This romance guarantees a HEA and no cheating. Fortune’s Mistake can be read as a stand-alone.

I received this as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.

Plot wise this book is your standard boilerplate small town romance. You have lot of tough men who act like marshmallows for their ladies, more nosy neighbors than you can keep track of, and stakes that are low 90% of the time. This isn't a bad thing because it's what we want and expect from this type of book. There also wasn't anything in particular to make this book stand out among the sea of small town romances. The most unique note here is they are in Florida. So, that's a neutral note.

The reason I didn't enjoy this book very much was the fact that is was difficult to read. I believe the author needs to work on her technical skills with a writing course or a more aggressive editor to refine her work.

Scenes jump around a lot. Scene breaks are used frequently and most of them break into a continuation of the exact same scene or something happening three minutes later. At one point I thought some chapters were out of order for a minute because they talked about going shopping to cook dinner together, then the next scene/chapter he was abruptly going to work, and then the next chapter they are grocery shopping. It wasn't out of order, but it was muddy. There are a lot of characters and several of them have names that are far too similar. Jack and Jake, Lainey and Lilah. Dialog and action markers were muddled which made it hard to tell who said what. (Don't have someone else do an action in the middle of a different person talking.) And there was just noticeably more tell, than show in the writing.

Overall, I have definitely read much worse books. Most characters here are actually mature adults who willingly talk about their issues and work through them. The relationship is solid and none of the book conflict is about if their relationship will work out. But, there are a lot of small town romances out there to choose from by stronger writers. So this wouldn't be one I recommend unless someone is looking for the highly specific combination of Florida firemen.

Maybe I should have read the first book before this one because so many characters got thrown into the plot that I got lost.
The writing was a little jarring. People would randomly appear in a scene with no warning- they would just start speaking. The two MC's personalities were also confusing. Lots of Jekyll and Hyde going on. It also was unclear what was wrong with the FMC. She had a learning disability but also seemed socially stunted? But then would occasionally act normal with her girlfriends?
Overall, I liked the premise of the book, but it, unfortunately, didn't deliver for me.

Some stories sneak up on you — warm, slow, and unassuming — until suddenly you’re clutching the book at 2 a.m., whispering, “Oh no, they didn’t.” Fortune’s Mistake by Hazel Snow is one of those rare small-town romances that blends charm, tension, and heart with just enough heat to make you blush and just enough suspense to keep your pulse racing.

At the heart of this story is Emma Shaver, a determined woman who’s finally found her place — or so she thinks. Her dream store in Fortune’s Creek is supposed to be her fresh start, not the target of sabotage and whispered gossip. And then there’s Aiden Taggert, her landlord-slash-local-firefighter-slash-human-tornado-of-charisma. He’s everything Emma doesn’t want: easygoing, flirty, and frustratingly impossible to ignore.

But when the threats turn dangerous and the fires start to burn — literally — Aiden becomes the only person Emma can trust. What follows is an opposites-attract romance that’s tender, funny, and pulse-pounding all at once.

Hazel Snow does something truly special here: she gives us two broken people who don’t fix each other but instead find themselves through each other. Aiden’s goofy humor hides his guilt and grief, while Emma’s fierce independence masks her fear of being seen as fragile. Together, they spark — and not just in the romantic sense. The chemistry is undeniable, the banter is sharp, and the emotional payoff is chef’s kiss.

What really sets Fortune’s Mistake apart is how real these characters feel. Emma’s vulnerability hits home for anyone who’s ever tried to start over while pretending not to be scared. And Aiden? He’s that rare kind of hero who can make you laugh one minute and cry the next. The man is a walking contradiction — protective, playful, and painfully human.

And just when you think you’ve figured it all out… the plot twist drops. You’ll blink, reread the page, and whisper, “Wait — what just happened?” Hazel Snow doesn’t just deliver romance; she builds suspense with the precision of someone who knows exactly when to fan the flames.

If you love small-town stories with found family, genuine character growth, slow-burn tension, and a hero who’d literally walk through fire for the woman he loves — this one’s for you.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶️🌶️

I am obsessed with this series and these characters. I wait months for the next book and I read it in less than 48 hours. It’s my toxic trait 🤷🏼‍♀️

Aidan is the town goofball who never takes anything seriously. He’s carefree and randomly breaking out new dance moves. At least that’s how he portrays himself…he’s also seen as the town hero, though he doesn’t feel he deserves it. While Emma is very determined to get ahead in life. She’s always felt looked over and as if she’s gotten the short end of the stick, always having to work much harder than her family for success. It doesn’t get more opposite than this! However, because of those shortcomings, these 2 come together to fill in the gaps.

I loved seeing this other side of Aidan! The way he was always there for her during her highs and lows…ugh he’s precious. And that protective side?? 🥵🥵🥵. Emma really came out of her shell for this one and she brought Aidan back down to earth when he needed it. And of course the plot twist….no one saw that coming and I was like wait what??? They did what??? I was so enveloped in their love story I missed all the red flags too! Ready for book 3 now please.

Overall this was a pretty good read. The plot was engaging and I felt the twist of crime mixed with the romance was a nice balance. The heat was well written in the book. It was hard not to fall in love with the band of friends and to enjoy their journeys together. Emma had so much growing to do to find her own self worth and Aiden was the tortured soul who found his own peace in supporting her.

A couple critiques of the book: there were a lot of characters thrown around and it felt hard to keep up with all of them. So many names. I also didn’t love having both a Julia and a Jennifer plus a Jake and a Jack. I often mixed the two girls and two guys up with each other. The characters occasionally felt written to be younger than how they were supposed to be too. I tried to find Emma’s age and couldn’t but I think she was supposed to be young to mid 20s and she acted like she was 18. Aiden was supposed to be 31 I think but he acted like he was 20. Julia was mentioned to be 21 but she acted like she was 16. It felt too repetitive to have adults consistently speaking in childish ways but more or less acting like adults.

ARC review book 2 in the series, I have not read book 1
Antecdotal notes while reading
The book opens to "I hope my funeral..." ummm what have I gotten myself into?
Is Destiny the "mistake"?
What's going on at the store Emma? Dyslexia? Dyscalculia? Math anxiety? Is it all due to Aiden?
Is Dean on the spectrum?
I love Emma's mom! "... you measure progress by comparing yourself to where you were yesterday. "
Why would Emma receive a threat? So many threats!
Aiden, how did you fail Lilah? You literally took a bullet for her.
I don’t know how long I would stay at a summer documentary event.
So much town drama hanging over the residents' heads.
Definitely arson, but I don't think Howie did it. My money is on Jennifer.
Who's Chad Berry? Why did his name pop up for 2 sentences and then disappear? I'm so confused.

Ok, just finished the book. There are way too many characters in the novel. They are constantly coming and going it seems out of the blue. It made it hard to keep them all straight from time to time.

3.5⭐️
I enjoyed seeing Emma and Aiden become what the other person needed. Aiden is the carefree guy who everyone sees as the town hero but it's a front he puts up to mask his grief. Emma is determined to have a clean start while feeling a little insecure about it. They have a bit of a rough start but the sharp banter is always fun. The trust they had in each other was beautiful. I will say I feel like in some parts there was a little disconnect in the way the story developed. I would get the feeling of missing information or like I had to reread a page cause I thought I missed something. I don't know if it's something I missed in the first book or if it was only present in this book. It could also be be because I had just finished a very emotional book and I felt a little drained. Either way I still enjoyed this read and if you like books with good plot twists then you'll definitely enjoy this one!

This is book is a suspense rom com of sorts. It will grab you from the first page and will leave wanting the next book.

Emma is the happy to being in the background and wants to make a life for herself, she is independent and a bit insecure but determined, that is until she starts receiving threatening notes, and believes they are coming from her neighbor. Aiden is the joker, who hides his ghosts under this facade, he is a firefigther attracted to Emma but stays away, until he finds her panicking over the notes, and his protective side comes to play.

As they get closer, they start to see a brand new side to each other, and the attraction grows but the threats escalate, and it will keep you guessing...

A opposites attract kind of story with relatable characters, a smart plot and a fast paced story that will keep you attached to the pages of the book.

ARC Review

I did not read book 1 prior so I felt I was bit lost and lacked context for several of the characters and prior events. So, I would recommend reading book 1 to get the full storyline.

This is a small town romance with a sprinkle of thriller. One aspect I think many will appreciate is there is no miscommunication trope or third act break-up. I enjoyed Aiden and Emma, the author did a good job at developing them. The twist didnt start unraveling until about 80% through, but I didnt feel like it was rushed and it made sense. Another aspect was the spicy parts did not overshadow the plot, and did not unnecessary.

I felt there were a lot of random jumps in the story that made it challenging to follow. There were several times I had to reread sections because it would be talking about one thing, then suddenly jump to something completely different or even contradict what another scene had portrayed.

Overall, I did not love this nor did I hate it. I thought it was a nice easy read that was not overly complex. Despite some of the flaws, I think there are many readers that would love this one. I will likely read the other books in the series.

Wow! This book pulls you in from the start. I could not put this book down and had a hard time getting all the things I needed to on my Saturday. The authors writing style and story telling ability are great. It was one of those interconnected stand alone stories where you didn't feel lost because you didn't read the first one.

If you read this book you will fall in love with Aiden and Emma. They have a rough start but end beautifully. He falls first and harder and would do anything for her and literally puts his life at risk for her. Emma is a character that any woman can relate to. We all have or insecurities and secrets about ourselves just like her. They help and heal each other. Their relationship works so well because they believe in and trust the other completely!

I highly recommend this book! You will not be disappointed!

I was selected as an arc reader for this book and i rated it 4 stars and 2.5 chili peppers this story follows our fmc Emma who is new to town and meets the mayor's son who also happens to be a firefighter and this is a medium burn romance with a learning disability rep, not too explicit spice, and a mmc that love's his girl. Emma is such a superstar because she has been threatened multiple times by someone and hasn't told anyone, but does she pay the price for it or does she get away find out and see. Aiden our mmc really fell for Emma it was basically love at first sight and he does everything in his power to help her and protect her. Something I really enjoyed about this book was that both the characters had flaws and weren't picture perfect.

Aiden and Emma had me swooning so fast I had to lay down to read this book. Emma wants to just run her business and not think about Aiden, and when Emma refuses to give him the time of day, he is happy to just get his rent on time each month. The conflicts in this book kind of reminds me of another series I read–in the small town + conflict kind of way–and I loved that series just as much as this one. I like my romances with equal parts spice and conflict, because conflict is a part of life, nobody's life is void of conflict and romances with conflict. They 100% do not exist. I haven’t read Hazel’s books before and this one is definitely one of many of hers that I plan to read.

Emma and Aiden had me hooked from the start. He hides his struggles behind charm, she hides hers while receiving threatening notes—but their chemistry is electric. Hazel Snow delivers a spicy, small-town romance packed with suspense, fires, twists, and layered, vulnerable characters. The supporting cast adds even more depth, making the story feel alive and real. Just when you think you’ve figured out who’s behind it all, an edge-of-your-seat surprise hits. I finished with a huge smile and all the happy endorphins!.

I wanted to hug Emma and Aiden, so much reading this, I empathised with them and liked that they took another chance at getting to know each other. Aiden had many layers, as a reader, uncovering these helped me to understand him better. I enjoyed seeing their connection and chemistry grow, seeing how good they were for each other and trying to work out who was behind it all. I loved the support they had, and seeing how strong they were together. The way they saw each other, supported each other, knew each other, added to their story. From the first page I felt like I needed to read the first book because I was having trouble with the back stories, or lack there of, which meant I had trouble relating to the characters. I liked the two main characters, Emma and Aiden and I was pleased they finally got their act together, but, the constant sex scenes became tedious and I just skipped over them. I suspected who was leaving the notes so I wasn't surprised when that admission came out.
This story wasn't a page turner for me and might have been had I read Book 1 first, maybe.

I loved that this book featured a neurodivergent FMC and that she made friends with crows. I too aspire to make crow friends and found the anxiety her character had to be relatable. The suspense plot in the book was interesting and the 'villain' was not who I expected which is always something I appreciate when reading something tagged as romantic suspense. Unfortunately some of the writing/dialogue felt sort of choppy and it combination with some plot holes made me feel kinda meh about the book. It wasn't a bad book, I just personally did not really have any strong feeling after reading it.

Emma has achieved her dream of owning her own business but, things keep happening... then, the threats, the notes and then, the fires... Aiden is her landlord and has developed a huge crush on her but, she doesn't like him, maybe it's his easy going ways or she thinks he's not serious enough.. it makes him sad... when, he finds her crying and scared, he's there for her all the way !!! and the fires start !!! he'll protect her !! so good !!!.

Thank you for this ARC!

I read the first book in the series to get to know the background characters, and I am fully invested in this small town now. While this book is technically an interconnected standalone, I still recommend reading Fortune’s Control first. It’s worth it.

I really enjoyed the first book, but this one, I loved. The main characters and side characters are all so enjoyable in different ways. The plot is fun and kept me guessing.

If you’re looking for a fun small town story, this series is a great place to start!

Aiden & Emma are a beautiful mess of emotions, slowly unraveling as they discover how perfectly they fit together. Their journey feels tender & genuine, with moments that make you smile as they navigate love, life, & their charming small town. The subtle thread of danger lingers quietly in the background, never overpowering the heart of the story, their growing connection. The friendships & family dynamics are loud, lovable, & full of warmth, adding richness to every page. When danger finally strikes, it’s met with calm determination & heartfelt loyalty. A steady & emotional romance.

While this book is pitched as a standalone, I think reading book one might help understanding who everyone is beforehand. There were a lot of scene jumps mid chapter and it was very sudden and pulls you out of the narrative moment. The dialogue as well was difficult to follow at times, and didn't always make sense.

As much as I wanted to love this book from the blurb, it missed the mark for me. While there were some sweet moments, it all felt too jumbled and disjointed for a story I could enjoy.

I really wanted to like this story.  The writing was a struggle for me.  It didn't flow from one scene to the next well. There would be a break in the story where it would only be a couple of minutes later. That's not where you but a break, in my opinion.
There were numerous secondary characters that I had a hard time keeping track of due to similar names.
The first 60% of the book was harder for me to read.  The last 40% was better due to the story arc of trying to figure out "who done it."

I did not realize this was the second book in a series… oops! That being said it read fine as a standalone. As someone who struggles with anxiety and keeping perfectionism in check I related a lot to the FMC. I really liked the relationships with all the characters. I loved how community and friendship was represented and how big a role it ended up playing without taking over the story. I really enjoyed this book. It was a cute small town romance and I definitely will be reading the first one and every one that comes after!

Aiden and Emma draw you into this compelling story. She comes to Fortune Creek to start over and rents from Aiden, but a series of mishaps have them connecting in ways they never expected. It is a well written story that had me cheering this couple on to getting their chance for happiness in spite of everything trying to create havoc for Emma.

Emma comes to Fortune Creek to start over and rents from Aiden. Both hide big parts of themselves. Only they see the true Aiden and Emma. Aiden acts as a fool a goof around people but he not that man.

A charming, sweet and endearing slow burn romance. Aiden is a happy-go-lucky kind of guy, that you can't help but fall for, and Emma is more guarded and a little quirky, which causes them to instantly clash. The push and pull was frustrating at times, but well worth it in the end. The perfect balance of small-town drama, a little suspense, and some spicy moments.

In Fortune’ Mistake, Hazel Snow’s 2nd novel in the Fortunes Creek series, offers equal parts romance and mystery. This book can be read as a stand alone, but I’d highly suggest you start with book 1: Fortune’s Control. It will help you get a better idea of the back stories of some of the characters. I enjoyed reading this book and was surprised in the end. If you like a small-town romance, firefighters, ( who doesn’t 😉) and spice. This may be the book for you!

I'm hooked! This was my first time reading this author/series and I will definitely need to pick up more books.

This was a fantastic blend of romance and suspense. Action-packed with plenty of twists and turns, I was on the edge of my seat. The characters were also great. They were complicated and vulnerable. I liked how layered they were. I think my favorite out of the two was Emma though. She goes through a lot here which made me root for her.

Would recommend!

There’s nothing I like more than a sweet romance mixed with a little bit of mystery. This book has some important must haves for me, a strong female lead and a cackle of girlfriends supporting her while she navigates love in a new town. The mystery provides a perfect balance and you end up not being able to put the book down which is another plus for me. Loved it.

“Fortune’s Mistake” by Hazel Snow

-A heartfelt blend of small-town charm, sizzling chemistry, and edge-of-your-seat suspense. I received a free copy and am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts.

I found Aiden and Emma’s story to be tender and tense. This is a true opposites attract romance where laughter meets danger. There is mystery and passion softened by “found family” warmth. This slow burn romance demonstrates that even the most broken hearts can heal.

Fortune’s Mistake is the second book in the Fortune’s Creek series by Hazel Snow. But it can be read as a standalone book. Over all this was a good romance book with a little bit of mystery to it. Some of the chapters were confusing as I wasn’t 100% sure who you were reading about. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5 stars.
