The weather outside is frightful... what's inside is worse.
FBI Agent Victoria Heslin went to Black Ridge Ski Resort for a peaceful getaway with her fiancé. But a snowstorm triggers a massive avalanche that blocks the only access road, trapping them on the mountain.
Their isolation turns deadly when ski patrol finds a body on the slopes, and Victoria discovers the death is no accident. The killer is among them, and Victoria’s investigation threatens to expose secrets someone will do anything to protect.
With another brutal storm bearing down and panic spreading through the lodge, Victoria must identify the murderer before he or she strikes again.
An atmospheric, twisty book from USA Today bestselling author Jenifer Ruff. Perfect if you want a chilling Christmas holiday thriller.

This might be Victoria Heslin #10, but Jenifer Ruff is the mastermind behind a series in which every installment can be read as a standalone. So, don’t be reticent about jumping right into Victoria’s adventures (and then go back to read the others in the series, plus total standalones — “When She Escaped” from June 2025 was amazing!)
Ruff puts her FBI agent reluctantly back in the snow (Victoria did have an awful incident in Greenland plane crash that resulted in severe frostbite and losing her fingertips). Although this story starts with a vacation and a reunion promise with her brother, a lodge employee, not as an investigation. Accompanying Victoria is her hunky veterinarian fiancé Ned. Since they are at a posh ski resort in Colorado, I worried that meant the signature adorable dog moments in this book would be limited, but — yay! — ski patrol dogs! With snow booties! (Victoria’s greyhounds back home would have needed custom Canada Goose down doggie jackets and cashmere snoods).
Of course, terrible winter weather plays a role and an avalanche wipes out the access road just as the Ski Patrol finds the body of an inappropriately dressed woman in the snow along a ski trail. Victoria is the only law enforcement person on site and beyond determining the manner of death and ID of the woman, she and the increasingly irritable guests are dealing with power outages, dropping temperatures, nasty rumors, food shortages and — gasp! — possibly no internet to post grumbling on social media. I so wanted karma to come and smack the cellphone kid with the mohawk.
I love this series and this locked room style thriller again was so satisfying. You can always rely on and root for Victoria, get a twisty plot, a hint of romance (“the permanent engagement”) and the mystery will keep you guessing. As soon as I finish one of the Victoria Heslin books, I want a new one! 5 stars!
Literary Pet Peeve Checklist: Green Eyes (only 2% of the real world, yet it seems like 90% of all fictional females): NO Only blue, brown and bloodshot. Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): NO It’s winter, so only evergreen garlands decorating mantles and fallen trees in the path of the avalanche.
FBI agent Victoria heads to Black Ridge Ski Resort with her fiancé for a much needed getaway. But when a sudden avalanche traps everyone at the resort, the vacation turns deadly. With no way out and a body discovered, Victoria is forced to start an investigation. As the storm rages on and tensions rise, she must uncover the truth about what happened.
I really enjoyed this book. The character development was strong, the suspense kept me hooked, and the twists were well done. This is the perfect winter thriller!
Wow! Just wow! Talk about a gripping story. I normally just wish authors would stick to investigating case and not pad out stories with the characters home life drama but this story was so cleverly weaved together that it would be impossible to separate and to be honest I wouldn't want it to. The whole point of the story is being trapped by a storm causing avalanches while investigating a murder under some very difficult and trying circumstances and I loved every minute. Having to deal with the storm meant Victoria didn't have access to her usual methods or tools, although with all the twists I am not sure if would have helped much. Victoria and Ned still continue to entertain and be an unstoppable team. Reading this was definitely more fun, gripping and captivating than anything I have watched on tv lately, which is why I am looking forward to getting the audio book and the next book in the series, of which I hope there is a lot more to come.
Victoria hasn't seen her brother for a while, so when he invites her and her fiance to visit him at his place of work, she jumps at the chance. Alex works at Black Ridge ski resort as the ski patrol manger. When he invited his sister he had no idea they were about to be hit by a big storm that will have them cut off from the outside world or that they will be needing her services as an FBI agent. The body of a young woman is found on a closed off trail and in the wrong out wear. Unable to believe she just wandered away from the lodge Victoria treats it like a murder investigation but worsening conditions, avalanches and power cuts mean she struggles to identify the woman. With the lodge under staffed ran ragged, guests turning nasty with dwindling food and colder conditions can Victoria and Ned find a killer and more importantly can Alex keep everybody alive? I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Victoria and her fiancé, Ned, are invited to a posh ski resort to spend some time with Victoria’s brother and his wife. It sounds like a lovely idea but reality seldom respects our wishes or plans. I knew going into this story that it would not be about a peaceful fun-filled vacation and some well-deserved family time for Victoria and Ned, but I never expected the multiple layers of intrigue this mystery would present. Of course there is a murder as soon as our lead characters arrive – that was pretty much a given since solving murders is one of Victoria’s strong suits. However, this murder turns out to be the result of complex machinations no one will see coming layered with a multitude of setbacks and obstacles that kept me guessing throughout the entire story. One of the major obstacles arrives in the form of a series of unexpected climatic calamities that dial up the danger level for everyone at the resort. A major avalanche wreaks havoc on the entire area and complicates Victoria’s investigation when the resort loses power and phone service leaving her to conduct a homicide investigation without any of the modern technology or conveniences crucial to a swift resolution. It doesn’t make it any easier when the guests start to panic about being trapped at the resort with no heat, no communication with the outside world, and a limited food supply. This is an exceptional mystery full of action, danger, and intrigue that is sure to hold your undivided attention throughout the book. I could feel the intensifying anxiety of Victoria and all the other guests as their situation steadily deteriorated and I felt the stinging chill of the blizzard right here in my favorite cozy chair. I heartily recommend a cup of hot cocoa and a warm fuzzy blanket when reading this one. Surely, Victoria and Ned with choose a warm, sunny beach for their next vacation. ══════════════════ I was provided with an advance copy of this book, for which I thank the author, but I am sharing my honest and unbiased review on a completely voluntary basis.
When Victoria Heslin, and her fiancé Ned arrive at Black Ridge Lodge, the plan is to take some time off, relax, and spend time with Victoria’s brother, Alex and his wife Minka. Alex is the acting manager of the lodges ski patrol and is really good at his job. So when he tells Victoria and Ned that he’s worried about the weather and the threat of an avalanche, they listen.
Alex has one more patrol to do before he shuts things down and keeps the guests in the lodge. But just as he’s about to leave one of his ski patrol members contacts him with an emergency: they’ve found a dead woman on one of the trails. It’s not long before Alex contacts his sister Victoria for help. Victoria is an FBI agent and she’s going to have to help out until the weather clears and the threat of avalanche leaves because there’s no way that the local police force can get to the lodge. So, an extreme conditions, the woman’s body has to be brought back to the lodge, evidence needs to be gathered and safeguarded, and the body needs to be placed somewhere that it won’t be seen or messed with.
What follows is one harrowing situation after another: not one, but two avalanches, loss of power at the Lodge, a failed lodge generator, food poisoning, and the fact that the supplies at the larger running out and the lodge is completely cut off from the surrounding area. And that’s on top of the mystery of the dead woman.
This was a really good locked in mystery made scarier by the heavy snow, avalanches and lack of heat. The authors depiction of being stuck in and trapped by an avalanche was horrifying to me. My claustrophobia definitely kicked in on this one! The actual mystery was just MEH, but I enjoyed the fear and mayhem caused by lack of power in extreme conditions. I realize that this is book 10 in the Victoria Heslin series, so that may be one reason I enjoyed it less than I would have. There was a lot of discussion about cases and situations for Victoria in the past as well as relationship foundations that I knew nothing about. I did enjoy this book enough to go back and start at the beginning of the series though.
Oh my gosh! Jenifer Ruff has done it again! Does that surprise me? No. Not at all. She has written Lies In The Snow - An Agent Victoria Heslin Thriller 10. This is a series of stand alone thrillers that feature FBI Agent Victoria Heslin. You don’t have to read these books in order. The only thing that follows a timeline is her personal life. I have enjoyed reading them in order. I would urge you to jump right in and then if you love these books as much as I do, go back to the beginning and enjoy! I think I have the first two books to read yet. I’m going to save them. I just might need a Heslin fix down the road!
Lies In The Snow is about a vacation that goes all kinds of wrong. There is an avalanche and all the vacationers are trapped at the ski resort because the road in and out is blocked. Then a dead body discovered just off of one of the ski runs. Things go downhill throughout the book. There are some exciting, nerve-wracking times and I wanted to put the book down just to give my heart and brain a rest, but I was compelled to keep reading. It is a very intense read.
Of course, Victoria, Ned and her family are familiar characters but the others are all new. Some of them are typical of what you might think they would be. The bartender and the resort manager are examples of those people. The other ones you are trying to figure out if they are the culprits behind the crime that has been committed. My mind was working during my sleep to figure out who was the guilty one.
If you love a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, keep your mind working to figure out what is going on and makes you wonder how in the world it is all going to work out, then Jenifer Ruff’s new thriller Lies In The Snow is the book you need to put on the top of your TBR pile. I think you will love it. Until next time…Happy Reading!

“Lies in the Snow” is the best thriller I’ve read in months! Jenifer Ruff really put together a terrific story with several threads I got all wrapped up in - first, devastating blizzards one on top of another, leading to cascading disasters at the fully booked Lodge - what a great snapshot of human nature that provided! And then, the woman’s body laying frozen out in the snow - who is she? Of course, FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin MUST investigate the unexplained death of the unidentified woman! All kinds of questions arise, like who is the blond women? Who is the man who argued with the dead woman? When will the snow stop falling, roads be cleared, the power come back on … when will the Lodge run out of food? So many questions, frustrations, fears … an avalanche of chaos! Were Victoria and fiancee Ned in the right place at the wrong time? Get yourself tangled up in the chaotic threads of “Lies in the Snow” - you’ll be glad you did! I enjoyed an ARC of this book, and this is my honest review.
When Victoria and her fiance Ned plan to spend a fun weekend with her brother and his wife, no one expected how the visit would end up working out!
Unfortunately their best laid plans go awry, the weather intervenes and 2 major snow storms create an avalanche at the ski resort they're staying at (also where Victoria's brother works). The resort visitors are forced to live without electricity, dwindling food supplies and little heat. If that's not bad enough, a dead body is discovered on the mountain, and since everyone is snowed in due to the avalanche, the murderer is still on site!
Loved the Colorado setting and Victoria's relationship with her brother Alex and his wife. Good background on the ski patrol business and behind the scenes of a resort. Well-written and moves very quickly.
Thanks to the author and publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
Thank You to the author for this free digital ARC read in exchange for my honest review of Lies In The Snow. The weather outside is dreadful, but what's going on inside is awful in this page turning read that will have you hooked from the start. This is the tenth book in the Agent Victoria Heslin series and it does not disappoint. We follow Victoria who is a FBI agent that is at a ski resort for a vacation with her fiancé but she ends up on the job when they get trapped on the mountain by an avalanche and the ski patrol ends up finding a body. Will Victoria be able to find out who the killer is? Make sure to read this to find out. The author wrote this well and every twist in this read was great. Also every character was great, as well. I highly enjoyed this one and would recommend it to any reader who loves thrillers.
Lies in the Snow is the tenth book in the FBI Agent Victoria Heslin series by Jenifer Ruff. If you haven’t read the others, it is a standalone, but you should read the whole series. Victoria and Ned are looking forward to a relaxing visit with her brother (Alex) and sister in law at the ski resort where Alex works. Instead of a quiet visit, there is an avalanche that strands everyone at the resort and then a body is discovered. As no one can reach the resort, Victoria has do work the investigation on her own. As the book draws to a close, Victoria and Alex realize how important family is.
Jenifer Ruff’s books are always descriptive and easy to read. Don’t expect to get anything else done until you finish the book! I received an ARC copy of this book but this is my honest review. I always look forward to reading any book by Jenifer Ruff.
Another exciting adventure for FBI Agent Victoria Heslin. I admire her passion for justce to the point of walking into danger. This story is set in a ski lodge where Victoria and Ned go to have a getaway vacation, of course trouble always finds Victoria. Not long after they arrive a dead body is found and she is asked to investigate. Everything gets complicated when a severe snow storm comes in and an avalanche strands all the guest to the lodge. Is their a killer among the guest? Will they kill again? How long can the guests survive with these conditions? Jenifer Ruff has brilliantly written this book filled with suspense and twists that keep you thinking and wanting more. I Have read all 10 books in this series and found each one uniquely riveting, Each one can stand alone but after one you will want to read the whole series.
Things are anything but peaceful and relaxing for FBI Agent Victoria Heslin and her fiancé, Ned, when they visit Black Ridge Ski Resort where her brother is employed. An avalanche blocks the only access road to the resort stranding everyone there. When a body is found, Victoria works to solve the crime when it’s determined that the victim was murdered. And that also means that the killer is likely to be one of the people stranded at the resort. With limited resources, can Victoria solve the crime and bring the killer to justice before anyone else gets hurt?
Twists, turns, danger, secrets and more! An awesome edge-of-your-seat thriller.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Victoria Heslin along with her fiancée Ned are invited for a much needed reset by her brother Alex,to spend 4 days at his place of work at The Black Ridge Resort……No work,No paperwork,No criminals,or so she thought, until there’s an avalanche & a body is found. Eventually the resort loses the power & their internet connection. This enjoyable story was full of suspense and kept me guessing. There were definitely lies and secrets but you weren’t sure who, what or why but Victoria and Neal were supposed to be on vacation visiting her brother and sister-in-law when both a natural disaster and a potential murder occur at the Black Ridge Lodge and ski resort where Victoria’s brother Alex leads the ski patrol. The pacing of the story was perfect and I loved the way the author shows multiple characters perspective. I definitely recommend.
Many thanks to Jenifer Ruff for an ARC of this book which I had the pleasure of reading. All opinions are my own. Publication date: November 1, 2025
I ended up binging this in one night! I'm actually not completely caught up on the series, but I couldn't say no when I had the opportunity to read this as an ARC. I was worried that maybe I would stumble upon a spoiler or maybe be missing out on some of the backstory, but this read very easily as a standalone. I definitely like having the backstory and would recommend reading the first two or three in the series before delving into the other books, but there was definitely no confusion or feeling like there was a plot hole because I hadn't read all of the other books yet. In fact so far I think this may be one of my favorites!
Lies In The Snow is Jenifer Ruff's thriller, told over five intense, action-packed days, which I found fast-paced, due to short chapters that helped build excitement levels well. Away from a snow-bound ski resort a body is found, and it's up to FBI Agent Victoria Heslin, (visiting her brother there, along with her fiancé Ned) to work out whodunit. Food supplies and power soon dwindle, causing more mayhem before matters come to a head; then Victoria and her suspect take extreme risks in a riveting showdown you may not have foreseen. Grab your copy of Lies In The Snow today...and don't forget your snow shovel!

Intense ! When Victoria and her fiancé Ned, get an invite from Victoria’s brother to join him and his wife at the ski lodge he manages. They gladly took him up on it. They definitely needed a relaxing vacation. But shortly after arriving at the Black Ridge Resort the snow started falling, and not in a fun and pretty way. I’m talking a snowstorm of your life! Power outage, avalanche, murder and shortage of food. So FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin is no longer a guest at the lodge. She is working the case! This story will definitely have you on the edge of your seat!
Victoria Heslin and her fiance, Ned, are snowed in when a blizzard followed by an avalanche hits the ski lodge and cuts them off from the outside world. Then a dead body is found. With a ski lodge full of people from young to old, Victoria works to investigate what turns out to be a murder. Relying on what she has brought with her, Ned's medical knowledge and her brother's help, Victoria has to use her training and skills to find the killer. At times intense, this book was difficult to put down. Just when you think you might have things figured out new information pops up. This 10th book in the series is a must read for fans of Jenifer Ruff!
Lies In the Snow, the tenth book in the Agent Victoria Heslin series is a well-written, fast-paced mystery thriller. Victoria finds herself in the midst of a case after a body is discovered in the mountains of the ski resort at which she is vacationing. What she will uncover during her investigation will be filled with twists and turns and packed with suspense. This book kept me on a roller coaster, edge of my seat, breathless ride until the end. The whole series is addictive. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
As a new to Jenifer Ruff reader, starting at book 10 of this series probably wasn’t ideal. But based on this one, I will definitely go back and read the series from the beginning. It had just the right amount of suspense, twists and turns. It kept you wanting to read just one more chapter. And with everything I learned about the characters’ past in this book, I’m quite interested in finding out more about how that all went down. Hopefully I can read them all before book 11 comes out - is there is a book 11 coming out? I hope so!
Jenifer has done it again! Another great page turner that I didn’t want to put down. She has quickly become one of my favorite authors and can’t wait to read the other stories in the series.
Agent Victoria Heslin and her fiancé, Ned, traveled to visit her brother at Black Ridge Ski Resort — but their getaway was anything but relaxing. Not one, but two avalanches struck the area, and now, to make matters worse, a body has been discovered. I was given an advanced copy but the opinion is my own
Lies in the Snow by Jenifer Ruff is a gripping, snowbound thriller that turns an innocuous trip to a ski lodge into a chilling fight for survival. FBI Agent Victoria Heslin arrives at Black Ridge Ski Resort seeking peace but finds herself trapped by an avalanche—and a killer. The perilous conditions that turn a fun getaway into a nightmare provide the perfect backdrop for Ruff’s psychological thriller. Fans who enjoy stories with twists and turns will find this book hard to put down.
What starts out as a snowy vacation turns into a snowy murder mystery! FBI Agent Victoria and her fiancé, Ned, visit Black Ridge Ski Resort to spend time with family when 2 major snowstorms hit, causing an avalanche that traps everyone at the resort. As supplies diminish, they lose power, heat and wifi, the tempers rise, you can imagine the state of the guests! Interesting to learn more about Snow Patrol and running a resort. Love this 10th book in the series! Please keep them coming!
Lies in the Snow was my first time reading a book in this series and definitely won't be my last! The book kept me engaged and I had a hard time putting it down when I needed to be done reading for the night. The characters were interesting and the character development was fantastic. Overall highly recommend this mystery thriller!
I have read all the VIctoria Heslin series and enjoyed every one. Ruff is masterful at creating suspense and delivering a surprise or several before wrapping up the story in an always-satisfying ending. I like her lead characters and I love the dogs! This book kept me awake at night. I think it is the best so far.
What a perfect end to this series! Ms. Ruff has such a great way of telling a story! I love all the drama, the secrets and in the end it is all about Victoria and Ned and family. I will miss these characters, and I am sure Jennifer Ruff will have something up her sleeve that will rival this series! Kudos Ms. Ruff for a wonderful book to end the series!
Amazing! I love the Victoria Heslin series! This was a fast read with so much suspense. So many twists and turns you never know who is who but in the end it all comes together for a great story!! I’d you’re looking for another series to read definitely read this one!
Wow.. the twists and turns this book took had me reading faster and through alarms to figure it out… I did not figure out The Who dun it before the end. I loved how the author went back and shows how it all unfolded.
This is the tenth book in the Agent Victoria Heslin series. A dead body is found in the ski slopes after an avalanche. The suspense, twists and turns kept me guessing. This is an entertaining mystery/thriller. Very well done!
