Wicked Retellings #2

My Striking Beauty

Rate this book
TURNS OUT, VENGEANCE MAKES A TERRIBLE FOUNDATION FOR A LOVE STORY.

Cillian Lowry—real name classified, god-hater, former juvie kid, current dance instructor, professional liar. He entered my life pretending to be harmless and homeless. What he really was? A walking vendetta intent on destroying my people.

Electra Serran—modern-day goddess, romance-book devourer, proud moth in a world of butterflies, skilled avoider of emotional vulnerability. My mission? Make Malachi Hadez—my forever crush—finally take notice of me.

When Cillian suggests we fake-date to make Malachi jealous, I accept. After all, that trope works wonders in books.

The problem? The way Cillian looks at me. The way he touches me. The way he worships me.

The bigger problem? The way I start looking back. The way pretending begins to feel real. The way I open myself to him.

When his mask slips, my desire for his heart becomes a thirst for his blood.

I wished for a love story grand enough to burn the world down.

My fake boyfriend over-delivered.

Welcome to a world where gods walk among mortals, vengeance has teeth, and falling in love becomes more than a game. My Striking Beauty is a sizzling, gender-swapped retelling of the age-old tale of Cinderella.

My Striking Beauty was a fake dating, gender swapped Cinderella that will take you on a spell binding adventure! With mystery swirling, a mesmerizing cast of characters, and an entertaining storyline, I binged this book so quickly!  If you love romantasy that will tug on your heart and consume your every waking thought, then definitely give this series a try.  I’m obsessed!
“He’s really sweet, and you’re…”
“A bitch?” I supply.

Electra could be so prickly and harsh, but I loved her from the previous book!  She was resilient, such a bad ass, and someone you would always want in your corner.  So her deep friendship with Calanthe warmed my heart.  But she was still hung up on Malachi, and I hurt for her since he only saw her as a sister.  And he seemed to always have Ines around, on his arm.  So, when Cillian suggested they fake date to make him jealous, I was all in!  Even if I knew barely anything about him!
Cillian’s appearance throws me. He looks nothing like the man in the tux I met last night, or the easygoing teacher in sweatpants from this morning. How many faces can one person wear?

Cillian wasn’t even his real name.  And Electra was his target.  The games he played were dangerous.  And his dark side had all the shades of grey. He was nothing but a bed of lies.  So, while I wanted to hate him with every fiber of my being, I just couldn’t.  His cheesy lines, his words that made me swoon, his perseverance, I loved it all.  He snarled me with his seductive and charming ways.  And I wanted to know all of his secrets.
“You’re relentless.” Her murmur ghosts across my Adam’s apple.

Electra and Cillian’s banter was so much fun, and their moments could be so steamy!  But as feelings were caught, I watched as those were torn over what to do.  Guilt played a prominent figure.  And as pieces of the puzzle came together, my jaw was on the floor.  I did guess a few things, but what a twisted web of deceit and secrets that swirled around them. I also screamed and was panicky as things came to fruition.  And I couldn’t help the tears as feelings emerged, especially with forgiveness from those you don’t expect.  It all made this book impossible to put down!
The darkest smile spreads over his lips as though he were a monster about to devour me whole.

My Striking Beauty was a hypnotic romantasy that kept me glued to the pages!  Just keep in mind that this isn’t a standalone, and I highly recommend you read My Dark Beast first.  In this story, you get to catch up with all of our favorites and even see some happily ever afters play out.  But hold on, because it’s a rough road to get there and not everyone we care for will make it *cries*.  That second half is definitely action packed!  So, if you’re looking for a new romantasy series to get lost in, add this one to your list!  I can’t wait for the next book, and I have a solid guess for who the couple will be, eeps!

*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book, provided by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*

Other Favorite Quotes:
Not all of us are meant to blaze in the sun. Some of us are built to blend with the dark.

My spirit animal is definitely the moth.

I can’t risk Cillian getting attached. Even if I can erase his memories, I can’t erase mine.

I turn on my side and brace my head on my fist. “I just wasn’t expecting… you.”

My girl…
Electra isn’t my girl; she’s only my way in.
As my conscience goes to war with my gut, I grip her hip and flip her front to back.

I’ve lost control— of myself, of this mission, of her.

I drop my voice to a whisper. “Wanting you was never one of my lies.”

I close my eyes, shame and grief gnawing on my insides.
I was too late.
Too late.
Too late.
My ears buzz.

"I was honored to receive an ARC for an honest review from one of my favourite Authors"

Let me start by saying that there is nothing Olivia writes I don't read, especially due to how she keeps me captivated in the story. Her first book to this series, "My Darkest Beast," had me on pins and needles waiting each week for another chapter when she first wrote it one summer. But when she decided to write it as a full book I was over the moon and dug right into it as I did "My Striking Beauty." Unfortunately, I wasn't so pre-occupied with life at the time this book came out that this took a while longer to finish.

I enjoyed this book more so half way through the book and I loved the ending. Cillian/Reeves was definitely swoon worthy and I wish there were more like him in the world. And I knew he wasn't who the Hunters set him out to do. Quinn on the other hand surprised me and was happy she didn't let us down, in fact I'm clad Mal will have his hands full and I look forward to their story. Electra was one of those ruff around the edges, with a soft heart. I felt the beginning started off at a good pace, but then I found myself taking brakes as the story lost my focus. But half way through I zoomed off finishing this.

Of course Callie stepped in again and steered the story a bit as did Electra's biological father which made me not wanting to put the book down. (Even through a half marathon) Hey, don't shoot me I like books. Anyway, yes I liked this very much, and yes I can't wait to read Olivia's next book.

I’m torn between rating this a 3.5 or 4.

It took me a little bit to get my bearings in the beginning since it’s been two years since the first book and I didn’t re-read because it’s supposed to be a standalone. Reading the first book is a must, in my opinion, otherwise it’s confusing. I didn’t love this one as much as the first, but it was still pretty good once I got over my initial confusion. I didn’t feel the connection between the MC’s, but the storyline was interesting enough that I didn’t have to.

I truly enjoyed this gender-swapped retelling of Cinderella! From the very first chapter, the story takes off at full speed and completely pulled me in. Set roughly a year after book one, the focus shifts from Calanthe and Tarian to Electra and our new MMC, Cillian, and I loved getting to explore a different side of this world.

The Holy Hunters from the first book take center stage here, bringing danger, secrets, and an undercover mission that kept the story constantly moving. Olivia Wildenstein does such a great job weaving together romance, action, mystery, and supernatural elements without losing the emotional depth of the characters.

Electra was such an interesting FMC. She begins the story extremely reserved and disconnected from others, and watching her slowly open up and bloom into the person she was always capable of becoming was one of my favorite parts of the book. As we learn more about the traumatic first ten years of her life, her walls begin to make sense, which made her growth feel even more powerful and emotional. She finds love, but she also finds herself.

And then there’s Cillian. At first, we know almost nothing about him, but layer by layer the story reveals who he truly is. I can’t say much more without spoilers, but his character arc and the unfolding mystery surrounding him kept me hooked the entire time.

The Cinderella elements were also so creatively done. The glass slipper becomes scribbles on sneakers, the servant transforms into a gym instructor, and the story explores the idea of discovering who you truly are beneath the masks you wear, all wrapped in a world of superhumans and those determined to destroy them. It felt fresh while still honoring the spirit of the original tale.

My only gripe is the depiction of Type 1 Diabetes in one scene. As someone who is T1D myself, I was genuinely excited to see representation in the story, but there’s an incorrect moment involving treatment for low blood sugar. The book suggests insulin is needed during a crash, when in reality glucose is what’s required. It’s a small detail overall, but it did sting a little because accurate representation matters, especially for something so serious. That said, it didn’t take away from how much I still enjoyed the book overall.

I really enjoyed My Striking Beauty! It’s such a fun and unique twist on a Cinderella retelling. I was so excited that Electra got her own story, since she was one of my favorite characters in the previous book, My Dark Beast. It was a lot of fun revisiting the magic of this world, all the characters, and seeing where they are now. I really enjoyed the dual POV and getting both Electra’s and Cillian’s perspectives.

Electra, the FMC, is such a great character. She is strong, resilient, and stubborn. She’s been in love with Malachi Hadez since childhood and agrees to fake date Cillian to make him jealous and finally get his attention. But of course, things don’t go as planned. Even though she insists she’ll never fall for Cillian, she slowly starts to. I loved seeing her attitude toward Cillian shift, from seeing him as an insignificant mortal to seeing him as someone she can’t resist or ignore.

Cillian (Reeve), is a complicated MMC. He escaped the Holy Hunters, which are run by his evil stepbrothers, only to be pulled back into their world to save his best friend. He is tasked with seducing Electra and to help destroy the Atlanteans. I loved the contrast between his mission and his growing feelings for her. His patience, gentleness, and inner conflict made his character really stand out, especially as he slowly breaks down Electra’s walls. Watching their relationship develop was incredibly sweet and satisfying.

This book was such a fun, spicy, and fresh take on the story of Cinderella. I loved how everything came together in the end while also setting up the next book’s main characters.

If you love hidden identities, fake dating, immortals vs. mortals, plenty of spice, dual POV, and fairytale retellings, this one is definitely for you and should be added to your TBR immediately!

My Striking Beauty is a really interesting take on Cinderella. I wasn’t expecting the gender swap, or how much it would shape both characters’ growth. This isn’t just a story about a hated step-sibling finding love. It's also about the “princess” coming into her own, experiencing touch and romance, and learning how to fully open up to another person for the first time. That emotional journey added a lot of depth and made the romance feel believable and well-developed, even with how quickly it all unfolded.

I do wish I had found a better recap of My Dark Beast before diving in, though. I read that almost a year ago, and I only remembered the broad strokes. It took me a while to figure out who everyone was again and how the magic system worked. I think reading the books back-to-back would have made for a smoother, more immersive experience. Once I got my footing, though, I was fully pulled in.

I really enjoyed the characters and felt invested in their arcs. The romance kept me engaged, and I loved seeing progression for Calanthe and Tarian, even in their secondary roles. There is a lot here to keep you turning pages, especially once the story finds its rhythm. The ending, though, took a bit of a strange turn. I still don’t fully understand the betrayal or why it unfolded the way it did. “Evil is as evil does” felt like a bit of a cop-out, and I’m not sure if I missed something important or if it just wasn’t explained clearly enough. It left me with more confusion than tension, which was a little frustrating. Even with that, I’ll definitely be back for book three. I love this author, and I’m fully invested in this world.

OMG Olivia has done it again!! I absolutely adored My Dark Beast, I loved the world, and the cool retelling of Sleeping Beauty and Atlantian lore. My Striking Beauty is the next installment in the series and it does not disappoint!! Not only do we get more of Callie and Tarian but a whole host of new and returning characters!! It's such a fun world, I think it can be classed as an urban fantasy as there's a lot of similarities with our world. I had so many moments I was just giggling at but there's also a serious side. The Hunters are no joke and are determined to destroy the Atlantians by any means necessary. In addition not all the Atlantians are nice either....

I love Electra. She is so sure she doesn’t want a relationship with anyone but Malachi and wants to make him jealous! Cue Cillian and a brilliant fake relationship. One problem, Electra is quickly drawn to Cillian and is suddenly very confused.... These two have electric(!) chemistry, it is perfection. It's also the best 'will they, won't they' I've read in a while!!!!! I adore how Cillian is totally kidding himself when he thinks he only wanting to do a fake relationship to save someone he loves. He’s totally into Electra. I mean the Holy Hunters is a dangerous issue and poor Cillian is totally put in a dangerous situation, but he navigates it really well. One thing I love about him is that he is really patient, caring and gentle with Electra but has the duality of dealing with this terrible criminal group.

This is such a fun book!! There's some serious bits (obviously) but a lot of it is seeing Cillian and Electra navigate a fake relationship that isn't so fake, Electra being dragged into social situations and being saved by Cillian and a lot of banter!! This is a fresh take on Cinderella and I adore it!!!!!

What can I say about this book honestly Olivia has done it again. Everytime I am in a major book slump I somehow end up with a new book of Olivia's and I know that I'm gonna be hooked from the first page and it isn't gonna take long to finish it. I might end up sleep deprived but trust me when I say that it's worth it.

We find ourselves back with another wicked retelling but this time it's Cinderella with a twist. And even better our fave characters from my dark beast are all back and just as funny as ever.

My striking beast is Electra and Cillians story. Electra who is still crushing on Malachi I mean who wouldn't he's a Atlantean he has magic and face it he's hot. But Malachi doesn't seem to notice her in walk her blind date the sweet quirky dance teacher who Fiona decided Electra needed to meet.

Now what else do you do when the guy you want doesn't want you well you get a fake boyfriend to attempt to make him jealous well that's the theory anyways. Cillian has a agenda of his own trying to get his best friend away from his evil step Brothers. Can we see the Cinderella story coming in.

Anyways I won't give much more away but you really need to read this book it's absolutely amazing and hot so hot 🔥🔥🔥🔥.

I read My Dark Beast almost two years ago so to say I am vague on these characters is an understatement. I’ve already laughed several times just reading the bonus chapter at the beginning so I’m pretty positive I’m going to enjoy this.

Electra's first ten years of life were a living nightmare thanks to her human mother. She was rescued and then raised by an Atlantean couple. She’s now twenty and living on her own. An older friend insists that she meet her dance instructor whom she claims has a crush on Electra. Enter Cillian.

Cillian has concealed his identity as a Holy Hunter - humans who seek to annihilate the Atlanteans. He had left the organization years ago but is now being coerced to woo Electra in order to save the girl he grew up with who is his best friend. His goal is to accompany Electra to Atlantis and destroy the cave that imparts their magic. He did not expect to catch feelings for Electra.

The truth eventually comes out about Cillian and the hidden agendas of other characters, culminating in a nail biting finale.

I really wanted to like this but it just didn’t live up to My Dark Beast. Frequently I felt like I was missing important information, as if the book was making the assumption that I already knew all about the Holy Hunters and other things when I, in fact, did not. And my reread of My Dark Beast was not so long ago that I could have forgotten important information.

I felt like Cillian’s redemption was far too rushed with not near enough groveling on his part. I wish his true identity would have been revealed a little earlier in the story. It also felt like some things were just too obvious like Electra’s terrible biological father turning out to actually be terrible.

Also dang, sucks for Ines. What a whomp whomp way to go for a character that was supposed to be so strong. And Dorian was her best friend? I truly don’t remember them being THAT close.

Maybe I’m nitpicking but considering how long I waited for this book it just wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be. I’m hoping the next is better.

A Deeply Emotive 4.5 Stars.⭐️🗡🔥💘
My Striking Beauty: Wicked Retellings, Book 2
By: Olivia Wildenstein
Read Using Kindle Unlimited

I loved Electra in book 1, and her story didn't disappoint!

She's more vulnerable underneath her sarcastic and snarky shell than expected. We got glimpes of her soft heart in the previous book, but this was a pleasant surprise.😍

I found the biggest disappointment to be Malachi. He seems to have become bitter and distrustful since their last big upheaval! I thought he was pretty mean to Elle.😳

Cillian is a bit OTT. I'd have found his chasing creepy, personally, but in a book, it's fine. His possessiveness was hot in a 'book-boyfriend' way too, once they were a couple.😆 I loved how their steam lived up to her books expectations.🔥👏

This was such an emotive reverse Cinderella retelling. Both main characters have been through so much, and then the added deceit makes things so much tougher.😢💔

I can't wait for book 3. I'm guessing it will be based on Malachi and Quinn and taking down her vile ex and the Hunters.😎🎉

True Enemies to Lovers

My Striking Beauty is a fast paced thrill ride in the Wicked Retelling series set in a world where magical being from a island called Atlantis walk amongst the rest of the world. Love the premise of magical beings, and it’s world building. Great female character in Electra she’s a no BS type of girl. The main male character like Electra has a very complicated past. Electra doesn’t want anything to do with Cillian, too mortal and she’s hung up on Malachi her idolized Prince Charming.

Now I’m giving this five stars but I feel I missed something when the characters of Bryn and Saul are mentioned. Like I missed a major revelation. It wasn’t enough to deduct a star but I’m still scratching my head about it.

The book is fabulous story with plenty of twist and turns and subplots that made this a page turner. I like it because it’s blends urban fantasy with some very juicy sexy times.

Hooked from the very first page. What a story. Another twist on one of my favourite fairytales. This time, Cinderella, with Reeve ‘Cillian’ Lowry doing his wicked step-brothers’ dirty work, as he’s tasked with seducing beautiful ice queen, Electra Serran. Holy Hunters versus Atlanteans, good versus evil. A story packed with secrets, lies and intrigue, along with a heavy dose of spice in and amongst. Hidden identities, fake relationships and whopper misunderstandings are at the centre of this wonderful romantic supernatural suspense. Book 2 in the wicked retellings series can most definitely be read as a standalone, but I would highly recommend reading My Dark Beast first, because, why would you want to miss out on the book that started this wonderful series? I’m now just impatiently waiting for book 3. I received an advanced copy of this book. This is my honest review.

Cillian is trying to save his best friend and makes a deal that brings him back into his family's shady world. In order to accomplish is mission, he sets his sight on Electra. While she secretly loves romance books, she doesn't fall for any of his attempts since she's in love with Malachai.

Only when he proposes to fake date to make Mal jealous does she even start to give Cillian a second of her time. As he works on manipulating her, he starts to realize she's not the monster he thought.

I enjoyed being back in the Atlantean world with all the key players circling around the story. I enjoyed the push pull and monumental moments thrown into the book to show how the characters developed to get them to where they are now.

I was concerned at the end of the book but can't wait to see how this series finishes with the next main characters.

Electra and Cillian/Reeve

I would not have known this was a gender swapped twisty Cinderella retelling until I read the author’s notes. Neither Electra nor Cillian fit the fairytale trope on any way. The plot is complex and emotional. New villains are introduced. There’s an ongoing subplot that isnt resolved here. I lost my patience with Electra multiple times. She has self esteem issues but it’s no reason for her to be as rude as she is for maybe 85% of the plot. And Cillian lacks so much self awareness it makes him seem weak. I really don’t know how these two even got together. They seem so mismatched.

There is a big break up near the end and I was hoping it would last longer but things worked out and he redeems himself. How that happens is interesting. It’s a decent read for the 2nd book in the series. Can’t wait for the next one.

3.5 stars

I had LOVED the first book up until a name change and partial story changes so I had hopes for a fresh read on this one.

It's been a while since book 1 and I didn't do my usual reread so I was confused for a second until I figured out who was who again, and still couldn't remember Ines.

I gave this 3.5 stars because of the couple. I didn't feel their chemistry at all. One has a massive chip on her shoulder, well earned, while the other is highly paranoid due to his subterfuge. I feel like only one of them being like that would have been enough but both? There was no trust there unless it was forced on Cillian/Reeves side to manipulate Electra.

She also forgave him way too easily in my opinion.

Anyways, the story itself kept me interested even while skimming the romance portion.

This one was good too! Read one one sitting. Def more predictable than the first one but that’s mainly because we knew who Cillian was from the beginning. And the Gael thing was pretty obvious after Ines’ warning.
I did really like Electra and Cillian. She was a tough but to crack but he was really persistent and liked her for who she was. Now do I think she forgave him easier than what her personality would lend itself to? yes lol. However he was already trying to find a way out of it when stuff went down
I liked seeing how her and Calanthes friendship had progressed and how loved she was by her whole family.

I’m assuming the next book with focus on taking the Hunters down and be about Quinn and Malachi and I’m interested to see what his deal is

This is such a fresh and addictive twist on Cinderella. The story pulled me in with its mix of supernatural elements, romance, and deception. Electra is a strong but emotionally guarded heroine, and I loved watching her slowly open up. Cillian, on the other hand, is complex and conflicted, which made his character especially interesting. Their fake relationship turning into something real felt both intense and believable. What I really enjoyed was the tension between love and betrayal, especially once Cillian's true motives start to surface. The world-building and magical elements added depth, while the romance kept me hooked. It's a captivating, emotional read with plenty of twists and chemistry.

Love Elle and Revian

So, I loved My Dark Beast, and I was sooooo excited for Elle’s story! And, as per usual, Olivia delivered!

Electra’s wit and sarcasm are two of my favorite things about her, but the way she loves those she opens up to, it’s my very favorite! Her and Callie’s relationship (the FMC from MDB) does nothing but make me giggle and smile, and make my chest warm. And Elle and Dorian? Forget about it!

Cillian, I just knew there was so much more to him, and I was absolutely right! The way he and Electra came together wasn’t exactly the best choice, but the way they ended up? Yeah, loved it!

There’s one more left in this series, and I can’t wait to see what happens in this enemies-to-lovers, because no way it’s anything else…

Snarky, dark and delicious! I really loved these character bios and the beautiful prose. They were so flushed out. Electra thinking that she had finished metamorphosis and was a moth not a butterfly … just summed up her personality so well and obviously loving that she’s a romance reader. The vengeance plot with enemies to lovers, but she didn’t know she was an enemy, total chefs kiss. I do however, wish I would have reread Dark Beast first because I felt like I was fumbling with minor details and secondary character connection’s. Overall just a quick fun time because who doesn’t fall for a protective glasses clad MMC who can cook, dance and lives in a RV.

Sleeping With the Enemy

I love this fantasy story. The characters were well written and developed. The timeline appears to be near now with cell phones and luxury automobiles. It's a struggle between two factions with magic being one and hunters of the magical being the other. It's a Romeo and Juliet love story with a morally grey hero and a masterful assassin. It has a happily ever after which I enjoy. I recommend this book to all who enjoy a love fantasy.
Thank you Olivia Wildenstein for a wonderful book. ,

I love this world. I loved Calanthe and Tarian's story. so I was so excited to read Electra's story. Electra and Cillian/Reeve were a cute, reluctant couple. Knowing and learning more about Electra's childhood really made the relationship with Reeve to become so much sweeter. Reeve was a product of his environment and while I was internally screaming at his "mistakes/issues". I loved how it all worked out.

A great urban fantasy read. I really enjoyed this Cinderella retelling with a twist. This is book 2 in a series of interconnected standalones. You don't need to read book 1 first, but I would recommend that you do read it first. There are many characters from book 1 that have a role in this story, it surrounds the same families and friends. Overall great characters, a few twists, slowburn tension to great spicy times, and nail biting moments. Definitely recommend for romantasy fans.

Reverse grumpy-sunshine where the guy is chasing the girl… but unfortunately he has an ulterior motive for chasing her. We see Electra aka Elle again and she’s pined for Malachi for half of her life. We meet Cillian who has been chasing Electra but isn’t given the time of day. He proposes fake dating to make Malachi jealous and after some serious persuading, she agrees. Only it leads to more! But is there a way for Cillian to accomplish his mission and still keep the girl?

This is such a fantastic story. I adore Electra. With most twists on fairy tales, the story is basically the same. The thing I really love about this author is that she takes those beloved fairy tales (this one being a twist on Cinderella) and makes them different, makes them hers. I cannot wait to read more from this world, and I look forward to seeing what the next fairy tale twist will be.

The love/hate; the tension, the steam ahhh!!! Everything about this was incredible! Literally DEVOURED the book. I can’t wait to see who the next will be about!

I had a hard time starting this book. Mostly because I didn't read the first one, plus I don't typically read romantasy/fantasy. However, once I got into it, it was easy to get caught up in. I loved the overall story. My one change would be more action at the end, but I'm guessing that comes in the next book. 🤞🏻

This MMC ruined it for me

I love Electra, but I hated this MMC. She deserved better, & although the spice was great, they lacked chemistry. I'll still read the third book, but this one left me very disappointed.

4.5⭐️ This was cute! I think the ending worked out a little too quickly but I couldn’t put this book down. I wish I would’ve done a recap of the previous book because I forgot more than I thought. But I figured it out as the book went along.
