Welcome to Darkaway Island: A destination resort for supernaturals. Where monsters come to play!
Daphne Dupree needed to get out of town after things at work got a little…complicated. The last thing she expected when she filled out a silly online quiz was winning a singles trip to paradise. Too good to be true? Probably.
Turns out, Darkaway Island is more than a little strange. People in costumes. Large dogs running around unleashed. But the weirdest of all is that she seems to be part of a…dating contest.
The prize: a smoking-hot cowboy with an unhealthy fixation on the moon.
Travis Monroe wasn’t planning to stay long on the island. As the grumpy werewolf star of a supernatural soap opera, all he wants is to give his newly-inherited ranch to his sister then fly back to the set on his private plane.
Trouble is, if he isn’t mated by the White Wolf Moon, the ranch reverts to a half-brother he just met, and his sister loses everything.
Solution: Find a mate, sign over the property, break up.
Falling in love isn’t in the script.
As Travis and Daphne spend time together on group dates and one-on-ones, his feelings for her grow, extending far beyond duty to his family.
And she learns he’s more—much more—than just fangs and fur.
But a rival pack is stirring up trouble, and Daphne is hiding a secret of her own.
Do Travis and Daphne find love in paradise only to lose it in the end?
I’ve enjoyed reading books by Laurie London and was delighted to see that she is publishing again. Running with the Werewolf is the first in the Darkaway Island series. This first book is about Daphne Dupree and Travis Monroe. Daphne’s life is currently complicated. She is on the run when she learns she has won an online contest. An all expenses paid trip that is just the escape she needs.
When she boards the ship destined for Darkaway Island, she has her first met cute with Travis Monroe. She doesn’t know it, but Travis is a shifter and TV star whose father’s recent death has put him in a difficult situation. The tale that unfolds is delightful as Daphne learns not only is she taking part in a dating game but that supernatural creatures exist.
I loved Darkaway Island, from its coffee shops to its unusual guests and inhabitants. It’s like a destination holiday place for the supernatural world. Travis is a werewolf soap opera star who needs to marry before the next White Wolf Moon or he and his sister will lose their family ranch. Travis hopes to marry, give the property to his sister and divorce after. He never intended to find love. Swoon.
London weaves in some suspense as we learn about Daphne’s troubles and a certain book she is trying to get rid of and unhappy contestants. Travis’s sister created the contest to help him find a mate. He’ll play the game, but not by the rules. The author takes some time to introduce us to some contestants and folks who call Darkaway Island their home. I loved it, from the fairies to the seedier side.
The romance was sweet, with some heated moments that I quickly devoured. It was fun watching love sneak up on Travis and Daphne. Overall, this was a fun, light, cozy paranormal romance with familiar tropes and a supernatural twist on the Bachelor that made me smile. A fun novel for book club. (includes recipe and book club questions) I look forward to the next couple. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
Thank you NetGalley for the earc in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fun and light read! I enjoyed the premise a lot and would like to read more books in this world. Sometimes I found a few situations a bit rushed, but not enough to not understand what was happening, i wouldn’t have mind the book being a little longer in that regard.
I was lucky to get an ARC copy for an honest review, and I'm soooo happy I did! I have missed Laurie London's books so much, and she definitely didn't disappoint. The book follows Daphne as she is on the run from a total douche. Then, she finds herself on a mysterious island on a dating show to date a werewolf. Lots of funny moments and, of course, the romance and love we are all looking for. Don't walk, RUN! This is a must-read!!
I was able to get an ARC of the book and I really enjoyed it. This is my first time reading Laurie London. Nice blend of spice some cozy romance and paranormal. The characters were interesting and I never felt like the relationships were being forced. I really enjoyed the world she created in Darkaway Island. All around a fun read.
An all-new adventure begins from an author that has been quiet for a while but has decide to return with a series that is looking to be filled with humor, passion, and excitement. Laurie London, author of the Sweetblood Vampire series, brings us to a hidden island off the coast of Washington State, where magical beings rule and the weather is as tropical as it gets, but humans are only welcome under strict circumstances and with conditions. Daphne Dupree accidentally makes it through the careful vetting and lands an all expenses paid trip to the island for a month, just when she needs an escape from her life in Atlanta, and though she has concerns she is not in a position to ask too many questions. When she passes through a strange fog on the ferry from Seattle and finds herself on a beautiful tropical island her mind starts to spin even more and when she ends up in the hospital with the man who saved her from being hit by a car—with his bare HANDS—things begin to get even more terrifying. Travis Monroe is the new alpha of his pack, but only if he finds a mate before the next White Wolf Moon, in just 8 weeks, and he never imagined the human woman he saved from certain death would play such an important role in his future. Sucked into a dating game, a la The Bachelor, Daphne and Travis are spending more and more time together and soon their feelings are entirely too real, but Daphne has a secret and an enemy after her while Travis has his own potential problems that could come between them. Can a human with just a touch of magick in her life and an alpha werewolf that lives his life in the limelight really find love in the tropical sand under the scrutiny of an entire town of people, or will they be pulled apart by forces darker than they imagined? I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this new series, but I was thrilled to find myself laughing and really becoming invested in the story as Daphnes found herself learning all about the supernatural world that she never imagined existed around her. Travis was a hoot as he navigated the dating game as and dealt with all the changes in his life, he was sweet and caring with his family and pack, protective and growly with Daphne but definitely loved her assertive side as well, showing he loved a strong woman. Daphne was stronger than she realized, caring and empathic, friendly and valiant when standing up for her friends, and I loved it when she finally admitted her feelings to herself and Travis and decided that she’d found her place and people in this new world. The chemistry between Daphne and Travis was explosive from the very beginning and you could tell from the first moment that they were meant to be, and the heat was enough to singe everyone around them. I am really looking forward to however gets a story next in this series between the others we met along the way to Travis and Daphne’s HEA were truly characters and I can’t wait to read more about them. This series is going to be one that keeps my interest for a while for sure.
I’m going to be completely honest. I had high hopes for this book the premise seemed good and it gave me a sense of nostalgia to when I was 15 reading werewolf Wattpad fan fictions under my covers. I’m going to try and not be too mean with this review as I’ve seen reviewers get backlash regarding their negative reviews. So let’s get started.
I started reading the first chapter and I already did not like the writing. It felt very chunky and very telling and not showing. I didn’t get too much description of anything. (Unless you’re talking about the mmc’s dick). The main characters meeting on the boat was a nice way to start but then the car crash and the hospital chapters were insane. It just felt very rushed. I wish that those scenes had been taken out or changed. This book needs some serious editing. I liked some of the found family aspects in the book I liked all the different shifters I think that’s a very good way to be able to make some more books later down the line.
There was one chapter where there was missing information Travis was mad at Matthew do telling his sister something but we had no information of this conversation happening which was very frustrating. I hated the sex scenes. I hated them I was cringing so much. I’m sorry but I did not need to know so much about werewolf anatomy and that last scene of them mating and the knot. Anyways the plot was not very good as-well I felt like when there was a conflict it was solved in like 2 pages. I know this is a short book but maybe don’t put so much small conflicts the last conflict with the dark wizard was very quickly finished because somehow Daphne was able to defeat him it just was very sloppy in my opinion.
I also hated how Daphne acted like she wasn’t like every other girl. It made me hate her as a character and I hated Travis with a passion just the way he thought I hated being in his point of view just as much as Daphne. I didn’t like how the author made it seem like Mia was a slut because she wanted to look good we are in the day and age where girls wear less conservative clothes and they have every right too. But ofc Daphne is so different because she’d rather wear jeans wow.
Overall I probably should have DNF’d this book instead of sticking it out and trying to give it a chance. I’m sorry if this makes everyone upset at me but this is how I feel. I probably wouldn’t recommend this to anyone even if they were into reading werewolf Wattpad fan fiction like me.

📖 Title: Running with the Werewolf-Darkaway Island #1
✍🏾 Author: Laurie London-new to me author
📅Publication date: 11/17/25 | Read: 11/17/25

Genre: *Paranormal Romance *Mystery *Rom-Com
Tropes: *fated mates *dating contest/reality TV show Date-A-Wolf (think The Bachelor) *small town *grumpy cowboy H *celebrity romance *fish out of water h
Summary: Daphne, a lab technician, uncovered a conspiracy with her job @Griffin Pharmaceuticals. Her supervisor Deanne lost her life in a car accident that federal agents deem a murder because of the cover-up. Daphne needs to get away for a while, and she wins a vacation on the internet to a resort on DI. She is introduced into the supernatural world by a cowboy werewolf and a singles dating contest.
👩🏾 Heroine: Daphne Dupree-runs an online apothecary
👨🏾 Hero: Travis Monroe-the new alpha, will inherit family ranch only if mated by the White Wolf Moon. An actor on "Secret Shadows," a supernatural soap opera.
🎭 Other Characters:
* Jada-Travis's oldest sister, husband Matthew. She plays matchmaker * Ruby-Travis's younger sister, an investigative journalist *Dr. Alexander-Travis's vampire BFF *Franklin Monroe-Travis's father-deceased *Merrick-Travis's half-brother, wife Lavinia *George-Daphne's cat
🤔 My Thoughts: This had great world building in Darkaway Island and Wickedville. All the supernatural creatures were represented with Travis as the new werewolf alpha looking for a mate. Daphne took a magical spell book from her job that revealed her latent powers. Daphne and Travis were a steamy couple with their mating. I will definitely read more in this world-Dr. Alexander anyone?
Rating: 4/5 ✨ Spice level: 4/5 🌶️
🙏🏾Thanks to NetGalley and Laurie London for this ARC! I voluntarily give my honest review, and all opinions are my own.
Daphne's found herself in a bit of a pickle. After being (grossly) propositioned by her boss, she accidentally came into possession of some paperwork that puts the company she works for in a bad spot. Then her direct supervisor had a car "accident" and now Daphne's looking for a place to lay low while the feds investigate. Winning a trip to remote Darkaway Island is perfect timing (if not the tiniest bit suspicious), but the island checks out and Daphne needs a place to hide and now she's hanging out on an island.
An island that happens to be a supernatural getaway destination. Daphne, as it turns out, wasn't aware that supernaturals were real and the trip she won was actually as a contestant on a dating reality show.
Yeah, it's complicated. Especially since the bachelor she's vying for is a wolf. Who needs to be mated in a fairly short frame of time. And he's a star on a supernatural show. Let's just say that being interrupted while trying to spend time together is A THING (sometimes it's unintentional, BUT STILL!) and both Daphne and Travis have to deal with that.
MEANWHILE, there's potential sabotage going on behind the scenes of the show, Daphne's boss is really unhappy about her turning him down (and turning the company in), and a book of dark magic seems to have formed an attachment to her. As books of dark magic sometimes do.
A little danger, a rival pack with a stake in the game, a supernatural town that welcomes a human, a wolf who isn't looking for love (but that's not going to stop anything), and a lady who had no ideas monsters were real before she ended up on an island full of them. GOOD STUFF!
Darkaway Island is a supernatural resort where monsters come to play and humans can get swept into the mayhem. After her life takes an unexpected and complicated turn Daphne, arrives on the island and she quickly finds herself caught up in the local chaos, becoming a contestant in an unusual dating contest. The prize is Travis Monroe, a brooding and grumpy cowboy who also happens to be a werewolf and the star of a supernatural soap opera. Travis has just inherited a ranch and has to find a mate before the White Wolf Moon or he risks losing the property to a half-brother he barely knows, which would also cost his sister her future. As Daphne and Travis participate in group dates and one-on-ones, the story reveals both of their vulnerabilities—Daphne’s secrets and Travis’s sense of duty—while a rival pack and various island oddities stir up trouble.
While the island’s cozy, offbeat atmosphere and the playful, fast-paced romance might appeal to readers who enjoy whimsical paranormal stories, the fated pairing felt formulaic and the dual POV first-person narrative detracted from my enjoyment. The romance between Travis and Daphne grows beyond mere obligation, with genuine feelings developing despite the contest setup and external pressures. Overall, if you like small-town paranormal romance and enjoy the fated mates trope, this might be a fun, escapist read—but it wasn’t quite the right fit for me.

RUNNING WITH THE WEREWOLF is the first book in the Darkaway Island series, and introduces not only the characters but the magical island too.
Daphne doesn't know magic exists, but then, she does have other things on her mind, such as her crooked boss, who may have had her friend killed. With perfect timing, she is notified that she has won a holiday on Darkaway Island. It is her neighbour who encourages her to go. So she does. When she gets there, she realises that maybe there is more in the world than she had thought.
Travis is a werewolf actor who is recognised pretty much by everyone but Daphne. Due to complications from his dead father, he is the bachelor for a new show, Date-a-Wolf. And wouldn't you know it, Daphne is dragged into it too.
This was a light, easy read with a kooky island and characters. The pacing was smooth and flowed nicely, especially in the scenes with Travis and Daphne, as their feelings grew beyond what was expected in the show. There were some parts that felt superfluous to me, but that's just my opinion.
If you're looking for a cosy paranormal rom-com with a bunch of great characters, then this may be just for you. Personally, I am looking forward to returning to Darkaway Island, hopefully, with all my memories intact!

Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Nov 14, 2025
I was in a serious book rut when I picked up this story. It was just what I needed.
Daphne is addicted to silly online quizzes. She didn't expect her pastime would win her a free trip to paradise. And more, she didn't expect to find herself a contestant in a Bachelor like dating game.
A captivating cast of paranormal characters lead the action in this highly enjoyable take on the Bachelor. The Bachelor happens to be Travis Monroe, a soap opera star. And, oh yeah, he's a werewolf and new Alpha of his pack. The other women competing prove that cattiness isn't limited to the human species.
I loved the variety of characters. How could you not like a nun who is a witch, or a beautician, who, with her husband runs a salon and garage. Then there is the villain the boss Daphne came to the island to run from. I kept picturing Dr. Fecilier from Disney's Princess and the Frog.
The whole premise of this story was clever, the dialogue witty. When we first met Daphne, she seemed a little reserved and understandably wary. I like the way she found herself once she got to the island. She wasn't intimidated by the discovery of the paranormal community, held her own against an alpha werewolf and made friends all around the island. And, at a time I really needed it, this story was just plain fun
Thank you to the author for a copy of this book. The thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is such an entertaining book, it really reads as a paranormal rom com with the cutest setting, interesting characters, a bit of suspense, and an unusual couple.
Daphne is on the run from her boss (as she has information that can destroy him and the company) and she has been invited to be part of a contest in Darkaway Island - it is her perfect getaway from the troubles-. But when she arrives she is mesmerized and shocked to find out that this is a sort of reality show about finding a mate for a gorgeous werewolf shifter.
Travis is a tv start, gorgeous, a werewolf, and has sworn off love, but needs to find a mate so he can take posession of his land and give it to his sister (she is the one who set all of this) and then divorce. But he was not prepared to meet Daphne and all the other contestants.
These two have chemistry, but there is always something stopping them being together, but there is also her boss looking for her, and pack rivals trying to create chaos.
This is such a great read, filled with lots of humor, spice -their chemistry is amazing- , a lot of insights. You are going to love seeing how tender and caring Travis is, and how assertive, feisty Daphne becomes -she truly is the start of the show- as she learns more about herself and this magical world.

Laurie London’s Running with the Werewolves is a cute, easy read that puts a fun supernatural twist on The Bachelor. Instead of a mansion full of human contestants, we’re on a quirky island where monsters and magical beings mingle and love is just as complicated as ever.
I really enjoyed the island setting and its small-town charm. The way London fills the community with supernatural residents gives the story a cozy, offbeat vibe that feels both familiar and refreshingly different. It’s the kind of world you wouldn’t mind getting lost in for an afternoon.
The tone stays light and playful, even as it dips into the chaos of some work/rival family drama. While it doesn’t take itself too seriously, the story still has heart—especially in the way it celebrates belonging, friendship, and finding love where you least expect it.
Overall, Running with the Werewolves is perfect for readers who enjoy whimsical paranormal romances, quirky characters, and a fun escape from reality. It’s a fast, feel-good read with just the right touch of monster mayhem.
Sometimes you just need a funny werewolf book to distract you from life... this was that for me!
Daphne is not having a good time, she needs to get out of town fast, but has nowhere to go. However, she did fill out an online quiz that ends up offering her an all expense paid holiday to Darkaway Island. Travis is also not having a great time - he is supposed to be alpha and inherit the family ranch, but his dad has added a pesky clause in the will - Travis needs to be mated. Travis's sister decides to take matters into her own hands, and set Travis up in a Bachelor style pilot for a tv show that she is going to produce.... only one catch... it's for supernaturals, but Daphne is not one.
This book was a lot of fun, had a lot of humor, slight misunderstandings (but not the terrible frustrating ones), a sexy alpha, and a human who is just in it for the holiday! I am really looking forward to the next books in the series.
Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to read a copy of this book.
4.25 stars. This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a sweet building to steamy, dating contest, contemporary fantasy romance between Daphne, the female human lead trying to escape her literally evil boss by taking a tropical vacation, and Travis, the male alpha wolf shifter celebrity lead in desperate need of a mate so he can claim his inheritance. I enjoyed Daphne’s initiative and willingness to take risks. I chuckled at Travis’ arrogance and the way Daphne’s reactions brought him back down to earth. I enjoyed Travis’ improving communication skills. I enjoyed the non-romance plot. I enjoyed the supportive secondary characters and the theme of building independence and resilience in downtrodden/oppressed females. I enjoyed the developing relationship and the incorporated intimate moments. I enjoyed the world building and am hoping for more in this setting and maybe a full series for Travis’ family.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
'A pang of guilt twisted in my gut at that realization. Unlike me, each of these women came here with the genuine hope of finding love. Maybe not forever but certainly beyond the final charm ceremony. And here I was leading them on, making them believe I was into this as much as they were. Although I played a hero on TV, I was the villain in this story.'
I really enjoyed this book. It was such a fun romance with suspense, paranormal shenanigans, and a connection that was becoming all too real. Great world building and wonderful characters. I liked both Daphne and Travis. He had a lot to lose on behalf of his sister, but I liked that he consciously didn't want to hurt any of the women or mislead them while getting their hopes up. I liked his attraction to Daphne began to mean more than he'd imagined it would. She herself was kind, caring, but also strong and smart. I liked the way their relationship developed. I also liked the supporting characters. This story had humor and kept me hooked. This is the first story I've read by this author and I would read more. 4 stars
Running with the Werewolf by Laurie London is a fun, fast-paced read! Daphne, a human, wins what she believes is a singles vacation to Darkaway Island but when she arrives, her world is turned upside down. She quickly learns that supernatural beings are real and that she’s actually been entered into a dating contest for a famous werewolf actor!
This story has humor, romance, supernatural creatures, and that cozy small town feel I love. The plot and characters were really enjoyable, and I found myself hooked from the start.
My only issue was with the spicy scenes and the ending. They felt a bit awkward and took away from the otherwise charming story. If those parts were reworked, this would easily be a 4-star read for me.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys small-town paranormal romances with a fun, quirky twist!
✨ Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Running with the Werewolf is one of the best paranormal romance book I've read this year! The characters Travis and Daphne were a hoot and are well developed and refreshing in their uniqueness, along with the secondary characters all added to the story in a very positive manner. It's was easy to get absorbed into this story with both strong female and male main characters, intrigue, adventure, danger, friendships, family, passion, spicy scenes, love and a happily ever after. It is a delightful way to spend some time.
This is my time reading a book by Laurie London and I really enjoyed this story and it was a great start to a fresh series Darkaway Island, I can't wait to hop into the next book I recommend you grab your favorite beverage and sit down and enjoy this book.

Squeeee! I was so lucky to get an early ARC! This is the first book in Laurie London's new Darkaway Island series. It could be labeled a contemporary-paranormal-romance since Daphne and Travis are involved in a modern-day dating contest, with Travis as the "bachelor" prize.
Travis really doesn't want to be a "prize," but if he wants to keep his newly inherited ranch on the island in his immediate family, he has no other choice. Daphne wins a free trip to Darkaway Island, which gives her the chance to escape a horrific situation back home. And, to her SURPRISE, she's one of the several bachelorettes in the contest.
Daphne is sweet, snarky, and fun! Travis is all man/wolf, taking on the responsibilities he's inherited before getting back to his job as a sexy cowboy series TV star.
This was a great book for relaxing and having fun. If you're a fan of reality TV, especially dating shows, you'll enjoy this. Running with the Werewolf is like The Bachelor, except everyone is some type of "monster." Everyone except Daphne, who discovers that "monsters" really do exist and have a secret island getaway they can escape to. When she makes her way to Darkaway Island for her own escape, she finds herself as a contestant on a reality show. Let the adventure begin...
I enjoyed this book as a fun, lighthearted escape. Travis and Daphne feel an undeniable pull toward each other that develops as they spend more time together during filming. Perfect for those who love rom-coms with a touch of paranormal romance.
This was such a fun read! I'm usually into more darker romantasy/fantasy however this was a nice change!
Without giving away too much, in this story, the FMC unwittingly enters a 'Bachelor'-type content with a werewolf-shifter FMC on a magical island with secrets. The banter between the two was fun, and I'm happy it wasn't a long, drawn-out yearning type of affection. It was nice to have it start from almost the beginning.
I couldn't put the book down once I started - in fact, I read it all in one day! If you are looking for a change from the darker romantasy genre, then you you need to read this one!
This book was filled with hilarity, mystery, many swoon worthy moments. The characters were great and progressed well throughout the story, and the ending wrapped the main points of the book up well.
Have you ever wanted to watch the bachelor but have it be all supernaturals.
This book follows Daphne, FMC lab technician whose boss is trying to kill her.
Then we have actor Travis a celebrity from a prime paranormal soap opera, who is the lovely Bachelor.
Key points in no particular order: - Werewolf - Island for paranormals - lies & deceit - dude ranch - life & perish moments - Romantic - spicy 4/5 - The Bachelor with supernaturals -
Fun setup with there being a place where paranormals can be themselves, and the Bachelor show setup is a fun scenario too. Our female lead Daphne isn’t fully in the know about what she’s gotten herself into, but she’s needing to get away for a bit, so she goes along with the whole dating show scenario. Plus, Travis is quite enticing! Cute chemistry between Travis and Daphne; they do have a passionate connection as well. Enjoy shifter romances and love the fated mates scenario. Overall, an entertaining, quirky read. Enjoyed it!
I received an ARC of Running with the Werewolf and what a treat it was!
The chemistry between Travis and Daphne jumps off the page. I loved the banter between the two of them as they navigated their way through the story and to each other. Laurie London creates such a great world with Darkaway Island and what a fun idea to take a popular reality show and use it for this story. I had a great time reading this book and I want more from this universe.
Running with the Werewolf by Laurie London is a fun human/werewolf romance. Daphne is a human hiding out on paranormal getaway Darkaway Island. She thinks she’s won a vacation getaway but discovers a whole new reality. Travis is a werewolf superstar trying to save the family ranch and his role of Alpha which demands he be mated. A bachelor type dating show and a reluctant human contender leads to laughter and love. This was an enjoyable escape.
Laurie London expertly balances high stakes with lighthearted fun and a fated love that makes you root for this couple from the moment they meet. In an island-set small town populated with quirky and lovable characters, someone is working to keep this human and werewolf from being together, and either could be the target. I devoured this fast-paced and fresh story in one sitting and can’t wait for more in this series!
Book 1 of the Darkaway Island series and I cannot wait for more!
The plot was intriguing and exciting. World building was outstanding and expertly wielded. The characters were so very appealing and likeable and perfectly steamy together. Looking forward to what comes next. Enjoyed immensely and thoroughly and highly recommend.

This is an engaging story that brings readers to Darkaway island. When Daphne arrives at the island, she never imagined what would happen next. When Travis comes into the picture the fun begins. The chemistry between Daphne and Travis shines. I enjoyed seeing their relationship grow and deepen. Neither thought they would find love. Not only do we get to see their relationship develop but readers also get to enjoy the fun and the interesting characters of this world that the author has created.
I enjoyed this story! Good world building and the two main characters were likable, and both had some moments of personal growth outside of their relationship. A nice balance of humour, sweet, and spice. The only complaint I have about this story is that a few things didn't seem fully resolved, but maybe future books in the series will clear those up. Overall, a very good paranormal romance. *I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and this is my voluntary and honest review.
