Technical aspects of artificial materials based on biological materials, are discussed in 34 papers from a December 1991 symposium in Boston. Spider webs, nuts, and rhinoceros horn are among the natural materials considered. Cellular and non-cellular synthesis are treated from both practical and methodological perspectives. The applications described include preventing post-surgical adhesions, biomaterial implants, and biodegradable substitutes for polymers. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
