Reese's plan to stay safe after being Fake date her hot alien bodyguard. For ten years, I've lived two separate lives. One life as Reese, a normal human woman who lives in a one-bedroom apartment, uses online dating apps, and is unremarkable. The other life is as Empress, the masked pop star known for her provocative singing, dancing, and attitude.
When someone leaks all of my personal information, my two lives are brought together. Inappropriate questions and speculations on my life are the least of my concerns when someone is breaking into my apartment and stalking me. Whether I like it or not, I need a bodyguard.
Zill's plan to remain Don't tell his client that she's his soulbond until after the job is done.
Being asked to guard a pop star on Earth should be one of the easiest jobs I've ever taken. Then I meet Reese, and I realize nothing about this is going to be easy. Sombrans, like me, have no interest in anyone except for our soulbonds. It's why the idea of pretending to be Reese's fake boyfriend sounds great in theory, except when it turns out Reese is the other half of my soul. Now I have to navigate keeping her safe, playing my part, and figuring out who's trying to hurt her, all while pretending I'm not actually desperate for her.
Morgan Robinson writes paranormal and science fiction romances about sweet monsters, usually of the alien variety. Strong, alpha heroes have always been interesting to her, but there needed to be a sweet and caring side as well. So while the heroes of her stories might be gigantic monsters with horns and scales, they're stuffed full of fluff and sweetness. Her novels contain plenty of steam, fluffy romance, and sometimes more than one MMC.
Morgan lives with her husband and her two dogs. When she's not writing about an alien warrior finding true love with a human, she's being carried in video games, reading lots and lots of romance novels, or rewatching classic slasher films.
This was a really cute book! I enjoyed how the MMC was portrayed as this big, powerful man, but due to the way his species (?) biologically works, he was also so naive to the sexual side of relationships. It was a fun juxtaposition. I loved how the FMC was very sexually empowered. She was sassy and full of life. When they collided, it made for such an entertaining dynamic.
From what I've gathered, this isn't the first book the author has written set in this universe she created. That being said, it didn't feel like I was missing anything, even though I haven't read any of the past series set in this world.
The secondary characters were very fleshed out and had such a fun dynamic with the MMC and FMC. The banter between everyone was refreshing!
Breakaway was my first book from this author and I’m pleasantly surprised! This is a solid 4 ⭐️ book for me - the fantasy terms and concepts were good (and seem to be built off another series of this author’s), the characters had relatability in spades, and it leaves me wanting books for the side characters!
Starting off, I’m an ASS — alien smut slut (ifykyk). If you can write weird shit I’ll read weird shit. This is a great book to start for beginners in the realm of aliens, as it’s nothing too crazy, too smutty, too… tentacle-y 🤣 There is really only 2 true spicey scenes, and 2 or 3 more kind of glanced over. But this mmc has shadows (kinda like shadow tentacles ?!) It’s a great introduction into what aliens can do for you 🫢😏
The fmc, Reese, is kinda iconic for what she does as a job, and she’s very relatable even if it’s annoying at times. No, Reese, tell your family they’re worthless and leave the planet.
And the mmc, Zill, is an almost 7 foot, long blond haired, shadow tendril daddy with mind reading abilities. That was a mouthful (and so is he UNF).
This was one of those instances where maybe I wished for just a little bit more spice (normally I don’t need or want anymore of THOSE scenes, but I kinda wish I could see him grow a little bit more in that department, but that is totally just me!)
There were also some moments where things were brought up that made it seem like they almost had to be implied, but other than that, truly a solid story.
Overall, 4 ⭐️, 2 🌶️!!
Thank you so much to Morgan and team for allowing me to read an advanced copy of Breakway!
Ok yes I am loving this set up to a new group of aliens who have integrated with humans on earth.
I love the group dynamics and side characters and that they are mind reading aliens! With shadow smoke like tendrils that have a mind and will of their own separate from the alien.
This story of a outed pop star didn’t bug me as it usually does I think because Reese was written relatively down to earth. Also I think the story highlighting as she is retiring from her career instead of having the story be during the peak of her fame was better because the focus wasn’t on her fame or career being a barrier to the couple.
I liked Reese having to deal with cutting off her toxic, ignorant, narcissistic family. I appreciate though she had been putting up with their shit for years and financially supporting them ugh she ends up pressing charges and really giving them consequences when they crossed the line.
I am even more excited to see the next books with the other Sombran characters since they were also a big focal point and had a lot of set up for their stories in this story.
Zill is a hot alien mind reading bodyguard with ✨shadows✨. He is a great MMC. He is strong, can carry you out of a burning building and is definitely in camp touch her and die. He gets hired to protect Reese, a popstar human, after her identity leaked. She’s got a toxic family, a stalker and a dirty mouth. She is also super anxious and panicking a lot due to all of this. There isn’t a lot of spice in the book, but not for lack of trying on their parts. Together they are a horny, hot mess and honestly it was a lot of fun to read.
Whether it’s Alphas with a beastly side or visitors from distant galaxies, Morgan has a gift for taking familiar tropes and breathing new, exhilarating life into them. That magic is alive and well in this story, especially in the form of seven feet of Sombran muscle, Zill, and his mischievous shadows. But before we get to Zill, let’s talk about Reese, or should I say Empress. Onstage, she’s a masked pop sensation, dazzling crowds and driving fans wild with her unapologetic sensuality. Offstage, she’s quiet, grounded, and worlds away from the glittering persona she’s created. Reese has spent years keeping her two lives perfectly separate… until someone blows her cover and sends her world crashing down. When a stalker breaks into her apartment, the danger becomes all too real and the only logical solution is to hire a bodyguard. Enter Zill. For Zill, guarding a human celebrity should’ve been an easy gig. Instead, the moment he meets Reese, everything changes. She’s not just another client; she’s his soul bond. But how can he tell her that when she’s already on the edge? So, while they fake a relationship to protect her from danger, Zill decides to keep his secret and simply stay close. I adored watching Reese slowly open up and learn to trust Zill. There’s something deeply heartwarming about seeing her find safety in his presence and something utterly endearing about Zill. Knowing Sombrans only have eyes (and hearts) for their soul bond, watching him navigate intimacy with such innocence and wonder was a pure delight. His fumbling, tender attempts at romance were as funny as they were swoon-worthy, and the fact that Reese was the experienced one and took the lead for once? Absolutely refreshing. But let’s not forget Zill’s shadows. Equal parts hilarious and charming, they practically deserve their own novella. Did I mention that they also have a mind of their own? Their cheeky bickering over who gets to touch Reese (and where) had me laughing out loud and blushing just a little. Of course, it’s not all romance and lighthearted chaos. Reese’s toxic family and the lurking threat of her stalker add layers of drama, mystery and danger. The worldbuilding is rich, the supporting cast (especially the aliens) is delightful, and the story strikes a perfect balance between sci-fi, suspense and heat. Morgan’s new series launches with a bang and I, for one, can’t wait to see where it goes next. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Some love stories begin with fireworks — Breakaway begins with a mask, a secret, and a man who swore he’d never fall for the one woman fate had already chosen for him.
For ten years, Reese has lived a double life: the masked pop sensation Empress in the spotlight, and the quiet, careful woman who hides behind her own stage name. Fame has always been her armor — until someone tears it off. When her private information leaks and a stalker invades her world, she’s forced to hire a bodyguard to keep her safe.
Enter Zill — a stoic alien protector from the Sombran race, sent to guard a celebrity who suddenly feels far too human to him. His mission is simple: protect her, keep things professional, and never reveal that she’s his soulbond. But when fake dating becomes part of her cover story, that line blurs fast.
What unfolds is a slow, tender, and achingly respectful love story set against a backdrop of danger, identity, and recovery. Reese’s journey is one of reclaiming control — learning that she doesn’t need to hide behind a persona, and that vulnerability doesn’t equal weakness. Zill’s story is one of restraint and devotion, of protecting without possessing, loving without demanding. Together, they become a portrait of quiet strength — two souls who find safety not in hiding, but in being seen.
This isn’t your typical alien-meets-human romance. Breakaway is deeply emotional and surprisingly grounded, exploring how trauma reshapes trust and how real intimacy is built on respect. The chemistry between Reese and Zill simmers in every stolen glance, every word unsaid — their connection feels earned, not rushed.
And let’s talk about the shadows — Zill’s eerie, sentient companions who manage to be both hilarious and oddly heartwarming. They’re the kind of side characters that bring unexpected levity to a high-stakes romance, making the world of Breakaway feel alive and layered.
Morgan Robinson crafts a world that’s both cosmic and intimate — blending sci-fi, suspense, and soul-deep romance with grace. It’s a story about autonomy, trust, and the bravery it takes to love when you’ve spent years protecting yourself from the world.

The spotlight exposed her. His shadows claimed her.
Reese has spent ten years keeping her two lives separate: the masked, unapologetic pop icon Empress, and the quiet woman behind the fame. But when someone leaks her identity, the double life shatters. With a stalker circling and nowhere left to hide, her only option is hiring a bodyguard and faking a relationship to calm the media storm.
Zill is used to difficult jobs, but Reese is different. Not because she’s famous. Not because she’s in danger. Because she’s his soulbond. Sombran instinct tells him to protect her at all costs, but revealing the truth too early could risk everything. So he stays close, stays quiet, and tries not to lose control.
What starts as a fake relationship becomes something real. The pressure builds, danger closes in, and trust grows in the spaces between. Reese begins to let her guard down, and Zill discovers that protecting her heart is harder than protecting her life.
Reese transforms from someone hiding behind a persona to a woman who chooses her own path, sets firm boundaries, and reclaims her voice. Zill shifts from guarded protector to steady partner, learning to open up and trust the bond between them. What begins as strategy becomes connection, intimacy, and something worth holding on to.
A steamy, alien-human, sci-fi bodyguard romance with fake dating, fated mates, and forced proximity, exploring identity, trust, trauma recovery, autonomy, loyalty, love, found family, and transformation. It’s about a woman stepping into her power, a protector who never expected to be chosen, and what it means to be truly seen and still loved.
The Elevator Pitch: When a pop icon's secret identity is exposed, she finds herself hunted by more than just the press. Her only shield is a silent alien protector bound to her by fate and hiding a connection that could change everything. Tension, desire, and trust collide in a romance where survival means surrendering to something real.
I absolutely loved the relationship between the main leads, they were both so respectful and considerate of each other...
At first Zill didn't want to let Reese know she was his soulbound, as she was going through a lot and didn't want to add more stress, or make her feel less in control. And Reese, even though fake dating was part of her protection plan and he'd agreed to it, was so considerate of him as she knew his kind was only close to their soulbounds and she didn't want to force him to do anything he wasn't comfortable with.
I enjoyed seeing how their relationship developed, how they did their best to communicate and how they respected each other's decisions...
Even though so many stressful things were going on around them; with annoying reporters, a disgusting stalker and awful family members, Reese had a place where she felt safe, and that was with Zill... their relationship was so beautiful, I loved them together.
The shadows were so funny, and a really nice addition to their story. Now, the rest of the members of the Sombran security, I'm not that interested in their story or what will happen with them, though I would absolutely read a short story telling us how Zill's father made his mother fall for him...
POV: dual tropes: alien/human, fated mates, mind reading MMC (though he can't read hers), bodyguard/singer, blushing MMC/dirty talking FMC, found family. Spice: medium low (short detailed scenes, slight choking, shadows going everywhere) CW: awful slurs by family members, kidnapping, violence.
Author Morgan Robinson listed this on the Content Warning page as her goal in writing ‘Breakaway’: “When writing this story, I wanted to create a sweet and smutty alien romance.”—It is that and so much more. Morgan Robinson continues to be one of the best wordsmiths in the business.
Reese is confident in her sexuality, not so much with her place in her family—and I use that term very loosely, because it’s amazing she turned out as awesome as she did with people like that raising her.
Zill is confident and competent in being a protector. He is an absolute innocent when it comes to sexy times—this plays out in the most endearing ways. His shadows are sentient … well, let’s just leave it at that for now.
Zill and Reese’s chemistry is off. the. charts. All the side characters are extremely well fleshed out. So well fleshed out, I am looking forward to each of their turn at their very own soul-bound story. I am certain every book in the ‘Sombran Security’ series will be a ride you’ll need to hold on for!
This book cured my reading slump! It was everything I love in an alien romance for sure. We had Reese, who was equal parts strong and sexual, soft and feminine. She was going through so much, and still was powering through and trying to hold onto the good moments. Between family who hates her, a dangerous stalker and navigating this new found bond with Zill, she was definitely an admirable character. And Zill *dreamy sigh*, everything you could want in a man. He was strong and protective, with the means to back it up, while also being soft and caring to Reese when she needed it. I couldn’t get enough of her flustering him and imagining his pointed ears being read. He was adorable and sexy all rolled into one. Him being flustered about trying all these new things in the bedroom literally had me smiling and giggling. I definitely loved these two so much.
Then we had drama, mystery and danger to keep the plot alive. It kept you guessing and on edge. One moment we’re having fun and a photo shoot and the next the stalker has made his next move and no one can figure out how. The spice was also amazing, with the teasing touches, Reese flustering Zill in bed, play the shadows having their own wants and personality, it was a very fun time. I loved the shadows the most, how they would argue with each other on who gets to touch her where. And the bonding ritual was definitely a fun time *wink wink*. Safe to say, I LOVED IT!
Gleeful Goblin Review: This is a very fun take on the bodyguard/celebrity needing protection trope. Our FMC Reese aka pop star Empress, has gone most of her career until recently being able to have some degree of normalcy in her life as a celebrity whose real identity is hidden. But the secret's out and now the darker and creepier parts of fame are making their way into her life. To keep her safe she (finally) agrees to a team of supernatural bodyguards which is where our MMC Zill comes in. He's the owner/founder of the security agency who is hired to keep Reese/Empress safe. No problem, should be an easy gig even up to being asked to fake date Reese so he doesn't seem to be protection. But what happens when she's the one being in the universe made for him? "You won't have to worry about him trying anything. Sombrans only bond to one person. He has no interest in anything with you. The only reason I'm suggesting this is because it'll deter some of those who might want to harm or exploit you. Not only will it appear as though you're in a relationship, but one with a Sombran. No one is trying to break into a Sombran's house, not one as strong as my son." This book is all kinds of shadowy fun. 5/5 Stars
This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a fast-paced, fated mates, steamy sci fi romantic suspense between Reese, the female, recently unmasked, human pop star and bodyguard pretending to be her fake mate only to realise she’s his true mate, male alien, Zill. I adored Zill’s seriousness and focus on the job. I enjoyed the way he tried to ensure that his fated mate focus didn’t interfere with the execution of his duties. I empathised with Reese’s fears and her freeze response to threats. I enjoyed seeing her self confidence improve. I enjoyed the found family vibe between Zill’s coworkers/shipmates, and the biological family contrast between Reese’s greedy disinterested family and Zill’s supportive engaged family. I loved the building steam and the intimate moments. I enjoyed the non-romance plot but appreciated how it wasn’t the focus of the story and was relatively simply resolved. I enjoyed the special abilities of Zill’s species. I am excited by the setup for at least the next two stories and can’t wait to read them!
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
I am an ARC reader. Next thing you need to know is this book should be rated XXX, contains explicit, vulgar sex scenes. I was not aware of this when I agreed to read it. That being said, Morgan Robinson is a great storyteller. The plot is well crafted and draws the reader in quickly. Reese is the main character and she performs as a masked singer/dancer with full on erotica in this persona. Her real identity is a secret so she can live a normal like. She loves cooking and cooks for her friends and neighbors. Then her apartment is broken into and defiled and her undergarments stolen and sold online. Her world is shattered and she is terrified. Her manager hired her 3 alien body guards. Humans co-exist with Aliens in this version of Earth. I skimmed over the provocative scenes just trying to pick up any info that moved the story forward. If you do not mind the rating, then I highly recommend this book. If it was not so vulgar, I would have given it 5 stars the storytelling is that good. The author is new to mean, I hope she writes other stories that leaves out the sex scenes. I'll be first in line to read them.
***ARC review*** Breakaway came at me just when I was craving bodyguard romance. And not only is he her bodyguard, but he's an alien? Sign me up! What I love the most is the characters. Reese is such a refreshing heroine. She's sweet, she's fun, she's caring, and she's not afraid to talk about what she wants (with one exception - her toxic family - but she eventually stands up to them too!). And Zill loves her for that. I love the outspoken, experienced FMC x v!rgin, a bit shy MMC. There is also a whole lot of lovable supporting characters that hopefully will get their own stories very soon. It's fun to see them reading minds and teasing each other about it. But in the end, they are good friends and take care of each other. The spice is very good. I love how the characters' personalities shine in those scenes. And the shadows. The shadows definitely know what they are doing. Even if it's their first time, too. The novel has a good amount of plot and drama that serves to heighten the stakes and makes the romance even better and sweeter.
The story arc of this alien bodyguard romance is quite unique and full of interesting twists, which really drew me in. However, it took me a while to connect with the characters. In the beginning, they felt rather one-dimensional, and I found it difficult to root for them. The initial setup also stretched believability a bit, which made the first half of the book harder to get through.
That said, the romance part was engaging and well-written, and once the characters started to develop more depth, the story became much more enjoyable. The author’s creativity really shows in the overall concept, which has a lot of promise.
Overall, I’d say this is a decent and entertaining read, especially if you enjoy sci-fi romance with a few unusual twists — just be prepared for a slightly slow start before it finds its rhythm.

When pop star Empress’s true identity gets revealed without her permission, suddenly Reese has to actually worry about being in danger. Enter Zill. Sombran body guard. Hottie. Mind reader for everyone except Reese for some reason.
When Reese’s manager convinces her to pretend to be in a relationship with her new bodyguard Zill, no one is really sold ok the idea. But a few hot kisses on the beach and a surprise b0ner go a long way toward bringing Reese around to the guy who definitely isn’t attracted to her even a tiny bit.
And we can’t forget a special mention for Zill’s shadows who made me laugh with their antics.
This was such a fun read! Zill is a protective cinnamon roll who balances well with Reese’s firecracker energy. I recommend this book to romance readers who like their alien hotties protective but not overbearing and FMCs with agency both in and out of the bedroom 😉
I thought this was a charming story because while Reese and Zill were supposed to be in a fake relationship and trying to keep their feelings in control I wasn't expecting them to fall so hard for each other. I think out of all the characters I like Mauve and her family even if she seems a bit cold due to the fact that her husband and sons are human-Sombrans and doesn't necessarily need to show emotions with her loved ones, but it would have been nice if she would've showed Reese that she was loved and cared for since her family pretty much used her as a pay check since they couldn't work due to being related to Reese. Once I got into this book, I couldn't put it down because I wanted to see how this story was going to play out. I also wasn't expecting a cliff hanger at the end of the epilogue, but now I can't wait for the sequel.

Reese is a masked pop star and has had a breach in her personal information being leaked. Zill is a security guard, hired to protect her from this “stalker” and finds out she’s his soulmate. They have to work together to figure out who this stalker is, and their feelings for each other.
I struggled with the beginning as it felt rushed, but after about 35% it really picked up for me and got going - I loved how he tried to not mix up his personal feelings and his work being her bodyguard, and I liked their banter between each other. 🥰 I wish we got more backstory into her life before all the things in the book happened. And I am VERY excited for the next book with a certain character we’ve all met before 👀 🖤🫶🏼

Arc Review 🚀 Alien bodyguard meets human soulmate? 👽 + ❤️ = yes. The blend of sweet romance, tension, and high-stakes danger had me glued to every page. From fake-dating vibes to intense protective instincts, the emotional rollercoaster is real. The chemistry is sizzling but layered. The stakes are more than just romance. Who can be trusted and who can’t? I absolutely adored Reese’s confidence. She is a relatable character. Her confidence wavers in uncertain circumstances but she pushes through and isn’t afraid to ask for help when she needs it. What can I say about Zill? I love a MMC that will do literally anything for his girl. Also, SHADOWS. 🖤🤤 The perfect amount of spice.
This was such a fun series opener and a wonderful fake-to-real romance. Reece is a pop star with a secret past that gets revealed… Zill is to be her bodyguard but he realizes she’s his soul mate. Talk about complicating his job! These two had hot chemistry but survival is first up as they deal with action, danger, family and a stalker. I love that Zill had shadow ‘tentacles’ but he’s innocent enough that he has a learning curve on how to ‘use’ them with maximum efficiency ;P Reece finds herself stepping into her power and it was cool to see. However, trust has to grow between them before love can fully bloom. I really enjoyed how this one unfolded into a hot romance and can’t wait for the next book. Good fun!
She is a retiring rock star that has a secret identity. And he is the new bodyguard who's going to keep her safe. Funny, intense and yet the chemistry between the two main characters are worth the read. A full length read that shows how his alien / human behavior and finding his mate has made him overprotective as a bodyguard. He can read minds he has black Shadows that are appendages of him that are also protective of their maids. But until they of course make a full claiming Bond he will protect her to the best of his ability. Great read. Realistic Super extraterrestrial Out of This World scenes that are funny yet intriguing. Love the author's creativity. Good read.

Amazing. Hey I had fun the whole time I was reading this book. A shadow daddy who’s mean to everyone but her absolutely love it. I needed all 4 books released yesterday like 2026 can’t come fast enough. Zill was mwa chefs kiss. Reese was a lovely fmc and I absolutely loved them together. I love how them being mated was only a secret for like 5 chapters making it a non conflict. Absolutely love the supporting characters to death and can’t wait to venture into their books. Reese’s family made me so mad I could strangle each and every one of them. I would love a book series of the brothers and the werewolves. I just loved all of these characters so much I wouldn’t even mind them being novellas. Would highly recommend.

For whatever reason it took me a moment to realise the book is another one of the Sombran Security Universe series. And that was like coming back home after a long absence... What can I say without giving anything away? I did love the book. There were echos of the characters we got to know in some previous books, but it's a completely new story of Reese and Zill's encounter and in my humble opinion - it's great. Busy and interesting enough to captivate and entertain, but light enough to still be a pure pleasure to read. I am very much looking forward to further adventures of the Sombrans.

An alien bodyguard romance with a splash of soulbond mates, an inexperienced MMC, and a stalker subplot? Sign me up and take my money.
Breakaway was such a great read. The plot balanced humor, spice, and suspense beautifully, and the worldbuilding around humans and aliens felt new and refreshing. I loved the “he falls first” energy, especially with Zill trying (and failing) to hide that Reese is his mate. And as a fun bonus, this alien species has zero desire until they find their mate - such an underused trope, and it made the connection between them even better.
I can’t wait to jump into the rest of the Sombran Security series.
Imagine living a double life. That is hard enough to pull off. And to keep secret. But Reese is able to pull it off until she is outed and that puts her in danger. Zill has been hired to protect her and he takes his job seriously. Zill is an alien with skills and he is determined which is what she needs to shield her from her stalker and her toxic family. And to help her deal with her own issues. This was such a fun read with its share of tension - there is a stalker so that makes sense, right?.

I loved this book. Great world building and wonderful characters. I loved both Zill and Reese. I loved the dynamic between them and the way their relationship developed. Their chemistry sizzled, and I thought they made a really cute match. This story was captivating from the start as Reese's identity was leaked and she was forced to adjust her work plans and get bodyguards. A stalker adds suspense, danger, and tension. Zill's shadows fascinated me, and in my mind was almost akin to a shifter's animal's consciousness. I liked the supporting characters, and the story was well-paced. 5 stars
It's always so much fun to read an alien romance with a naive MMC. In romance stories, it is often that the FMC is the one without experience, so to flip that on its head is the most fun (IMO). Aliens basically make any story better, especially if they are hot. Zill deserves all of the happiness in the world, truly. I've never loved an MMC more (in recent memory). I devoured this book and can't wait for more!.

This was great! I love how it semi-touched on the grumpyxsunshine trope. It also touches on inter species (alien x human) relationships as well as people having issues with the . I think it speaks loudly towards real life issues, but in an easy to read kind of way. The story was fantastic and I can’t wait to see what other things happen in this universe.

This was such a cute fun little read! I absolutely adored the characters. You gave me a delicious virgin, alien bodyguard. He was just too cute I couldn't handle it.
The plot was good and flowed well. It's a little insta-love. But I still enjoyed it.
We got some great side characters and set up for other books with other characters!
All in all, this was just a super cute and fun alien bodyguard romance!
Loved this, was so much fun seeing Zill acting as the professional, while hiding what Reese is really... to him. It had spice, humour, angst and a thoroughly enjoyable read. I loved how these two, dealt with all that had to resolved before they could truly enjoy their bonding. I hope we will get more Sombrans finding their mates.
