About the author

John Kenneth Galbraith was a Canadian-American economist. He was a Keynesian and an institutionalist, a leading proponent of 20th-century American liberalism and democratic socialism. His books on economic topics were bestsellers in the 1950s and 1960s. A prolific author, he produced four dozen books & over a 1000 articles on many subjects. Among his most famous works was his economics trilogy: American Capitalism (1952), The Affluent Society (1958) & The New Industrial State (1967). He taught at Harvard University for many years. He was active in politics, serving in the administrations of Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson. He served as US Ambassador to India under John F. Kennedy.

He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice: one in 1946 from President Truman, and another in 2000 from President Clinton. He was also awarded the Order of Canada in 1997, and in 2001, the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award, for strengthening ties between India and the USA.

Another one of those unintended Book-of-the-Month-Club purchases that sat on the shelf since 1983 and didn't even tempt me. But it finally bubbled to the top of my reading list and I waded my way through it. A very organized approach to analyzing power, an understanding of which requires careful reading. Grasping Galbraith's definition of terms at the beginning of the book is a prerequisite to understanding the remainder. It made me think about everyday situations and events in a different way.

غالبا زمانی که کتابی نوشته می‌شود، در پاسخ به سوالی نوشته می‌شود. با توجه به این مسئله، گاهی ممکن است سوالی به صورت مستقیم در کتاب مطرح نشود، اما مخاطب به صورت غیرمستقیم متوجه آن می‌شود و پاسخ کتاب را منطبق با سوال احتمالی می‌بیند.
در این کتاب اما، سوالی مطرح نشده که نویسنده بخواهد به آن پاسخ بدهد. نثر کتاب تحلیلی و نه انتقادی است و به گمانم عدم دریافت پرسش و پاسخ از کتاب به همین علت باشد. در متون انتقادی، دیالکتیکی میان نویسنده و مبحث مورد نظرش شکل می‌گیرد حال آنکه در کتاب مورد نظر، جان کنت گالبرایت موضوع قدرت را به لحاظ اجتماعی می‌شکافد و عناصر آن را مورد بررسی قرار می‌دهد.
این بررسی اولیه شامل موضوعاتی در خصوص ۳ نوع ابزار قدرت و ۳ نوع منبع قدرت و رابطه‌ی میان آن‌هاست. اما در فصل‌های بعدی کتاب (فصول ۸ الی ۱۵) گالبرایت قدمی فراتر برداشته و به تغییرات قدرت و نحوه اِعمال آن با توجه به تغییرات جوامع خواستگاه آن نگاهی می‌اندازد.
گالبرایت با تحلیل درستی از موقعیت قدرت در دست شخصیت، مالکیت و سازمان، نحوه اِعمال قدرت را برای مخاطب خود باز می‌کند و با استفاده از مثال‌های فراوان، که از زمان ظهور سرمایه‌داری گرفته تا به جوامع پیشرفته و مدرن امروزی، چهارچوب قدرت تشریح می‌کند.

حال نداشتم بیشتر بنویسم وگرنه مطالب زیادی راجع‌به کتاب میشه نوشت مخصوصا مطالب جذابی که از دید بیرون به مطالب کتاب میشه داشت. بعدا شاید این ریویو رو ادیت کردم و نوشتم ولی احتمالش کمه. و الان ساعت ۲ و ۲۰ دقیقه بامداده

Even a good key to understand the development and functionality of terrorist violence. I recommend to read it together with Edmund Leach, "Custom, Law, and Terrorist Violence", from an anthropological perspective.

I guess the Economic approach that suppressed this masterpiece collectively, was wrong, the pearl was sold off...

بررسی خوبی از قدرت بود. قدرت از سه شاخص سازمان، شخصیت و مالکیت شکل میگیرد که با سه راهبرد کیفردهنده، پاداش دهنده و شرطی کننده اشاعه می شود.
این کتاب لاعث شد دیدگاه شفافتری نسبت به قدرت پیدا کنم.
با این حال مقداری توصیف اضافی مشهود بود.

One of the best books I ever read by one of my all time favorite Economist. I particularly liked his explanation of countervailing power. I found it thoughtful and helpful at the time.
