i'm on the fence. like, on one hand, conceptually, a 45 year old man with a crush on a 24 year old cashier is bad. but is that even what this guy has going on ??? i can't be sure. okay, no, he probably does. even with that, though, the power dynamic of their relationship is enjoyably reversed, what with sasaki being pathetic. like, you never feel like it's as creepy as most might assume, because mostly it's yamada's initiation. and yeah, i enjoy a pathetic man. sasaki is like, diabolically pathetic. i feel bad how much i enjoy it. the problem, though, i think, is that yamada is kind of full of shit? there's no woman (i know) who would behave like this. it almost reads like a man's fantasy, but it's surprisingly not as annoying as most things with that problem are. maybe. most of the time. sometimes. i might have rose colored glasses on because the creator shares my admiration for the intimacy and aesthetics of smoking, which is an immediate +5000, i'm afraid? i don’t even necessarily enjoy the romance between the two, i just like the working class vibe of everything. plus, sasaki is old. and that’s comforting, because there isn’t a lot of manga that allows you to feel okay about being old. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand yeah okay yes okay yeah? yes. i like it. but don't ask me to explain it. i don't like feeling like i need to defend myself.
I love how Sasaki is generally awkward but more sure he is in his love for Tayama, the calmer he gets in their interactions, while Tayama is the right opposite, she loves messing with him but the more she falls for him, the more erratic she gets. I think it nicely shows their age without it being weird or creepy, because Sasaki deep down knows that he's moving from "pick-up pill" appreciation to the dangerous deep feelings waters and aware of the age gap as he is, he gets more serious. Yamada on the other hand was first testing him if he was a creep, then appreciating his class, and finally detesting(?) his reserved politeness creating a sense of agitation in her character we're not used to as readers but is very much in tune of her being only 25 yo in my opinion. There was a slight tonal change to this volume for a bit more serious overall and I think it nicely fits the fact we're comfortable with the characters in their routine and they are comfortable with each other enough to leave the surface territory of nice smoking breaks with jokes and teasing. Will I miss it? Yes. But it makes sense to make way for some character deep dive as far along in the relationship as they are.

On one hand, this is suspenseful in a way that is tonally inconsistent with the rest of the series and threw me off a little. On the other, it's resolved in a way that teaches us more about the main and side characters alike, ties itself to previous chapters which remain emotionally compelling, and moves the overarching plot forward majorly. So like a strong 3?
This is so charming and wholesome! Sasaki and Yamada/Tayama was so adorable! It made me think about being an adult having a job and finding comfort and peace with an understanding person. This definitely showed an excellent age gap relationship between two adults.
Came here for the romance between two people sharing a smoking spot stayed for the story between strangers helping each other overcome their past and accept the people they were and allow themselves to move forward and accept the love and community around them.
I feel like this is one of the best volumes yet! I like how Sasaki is already catching up to Yamada's lie, and I loved getting more backstory for these two.

This one is very sweet, but the tropes are heavy here and entirely unnecessary. We already like Sasaki, we don't need this stupid pseudo-drama to try to make him a hero.
My favourite manga continues to kick my ass. I love it so much and care so deeply about their relationship. Please please let them confess in volume 8.
This was a good volume. I liked seeing the main characters become closer and share more of themselves with each other. I really can't wait for the next volume.
