Larger than most men, but still naive about the world and its complexities, an eighteen-year-old Conan is offered a job by the palace. A family heirloom, the Amulet of Nakamar, has been stolen. They need a thief to retrieve it.
On his mission Conan is attacked by guards, thieves and other saboteurs. Why is everyone after this amulet? And why does he feel like he’s been set up?
Weeks after the most likely life-changing events of the Tower of the Elephants, in the city of Arenjun, Zamorian City of Thieves, Conan has unintentionally made a name for himself among the Thieves' Guild, enough to garner the attention of yet another benefactor who seeks something they can go after themselves. After hearing the history of the object and realizing the scenario is the same as the Tower of the Elephant, I would think Conan would be leery of entering into such an endeavor with his new knowledge of the supernatural. At the very least, he'd ask questions. This is a practical read, without much philosophical ponderings and little in character building. I can appreciate that at times in Conan pastiche because it can avoid giving Conan the wrong personality but you didn't really get a separation in character types when they interacted with each other. In its simplicity, everybody has heard of everybody, and many times, the author mentions Conan's training as a kid in relation to his current actions. Of the a Heroic Conan takes, this is probably my least favorite.
This was a fun fast paced read. Yes, there were a couple of things off about Conan’s character, but not enough to matter much for a pastiche. Taking place shortly after The Tower of the Elephant, a young Conan is hired to steal an artifact. A couple of plot twists ensue, Conan leaves a body count, and gets his revenge. Oh, and there’s also a demon 😈 who must be slain amongst other adversaries.
These Heroic Legends Series range from terrible to good for non Howard. This story had a lot of potential. It's right after Tower of the Elephant and is young Conan being a thief. You hear quite a few times, " Conan remembered his childhood training," just felt repetitive. The descriptions of size and disparity were kinda meh he was taller and broader. A Conan story is supposed to be like where one was a lion lithe and powerful he found a bear heavy and thick with swollen muscle. I also feel Conan isn't very true to character towards the end. Not bad. I still like these, but this story felt off.
The Heroic Legends Series is so good, a nice quick fix of Howard's heroes, this Conan tale does not disappoint, coming right after The Tower of the Elephant caper. Good stuff, check it out.
