Mike is different to other children. For a start, he has a very-slightly-older twin sister, Layla, and a beloved father who is insanely-crazily-mad about trains. But also, because he carries a feeling of guilt for what happened to his mother.

Without anyone to look after Dad, who is terribly lonely and struggling to find enough money to get them by, he knows he has to do something about it. But with rotten and disgusting smells following him at every turn he feels lost when things don’t quite turn out as planned - - -

Join this warm and humorous family tale that has many detours and stop-offs along its journey and a host of colourful characters, as Mike and Layla try their best to make Dad happy again.

For young and older readers alike.

What a beautifully written little book. As an adult who studied Early Childhood Studies with English Literature, i am really interested in fiction for children and young people and this one delivered. I read this in a matter of hours and couldn't put it down! Not only does it have great characterisation but poignantly tells a modern day story of a normal family with its ups, downs and struggles which not many books for young people do effectively. Mostly these days its all sugar coated and idyllic which nobody can relate to.

The book follows the story of Mike, his twin sister Layla and their widower Dad, an endearing but lonely train enthusiast. Under the surface of what is a lovely family story the book deals with themes such as loss, guilt, reliance, love, life and resilience whilst providing laughter and mischief. This would be a great book for a family to read together. Would be interesting to see series of books featuring Mike and Layla and their antics! Certainly worth a read.

A wonderful read for children both young and old, and also parents. This charming, heart-felt and poignant tale left me chuckling many times. The characterisation really comes alive and the story's emotional arc is peppered with wit and grace. Definitely worth a read. A very good start for a debut author.

A Fun Read

Back-on-Track is a good story with interesting characters who draw the reader into their problems. The family in the story faces realistic challenges that many youngsters readers must deal with. I recommend this book to all young readers.
