"I know I couldn’t say goodbye. I would never leave." (Based on true events)
It’s 1938 in Spangenberg, Germany, and thirteen-year-old Hannah’s teacher is replaced with a Nazi educator. The day Herr Knodt shows up with his Nazi flag and a picture of Hitler on his desk, Hannah knows her carefree lifestyle as a Jewish teenager is in jeopardy. On the way home from school one day, she’s attacked by the Hitler Youth. Frightened and angered, Hannah resolves she must get out of Germany, or she will die. Caught between her desperation to leave and her father’s refusal to let her go, Hannah promises her family to find freedom.
Her close friend, Friedrich, is now head of the Hitler Youth. She doesn’t trust him, but he always shows up in her time of need. She questions whether he’s helping or spying on her. Hannah understands that freedom comes with a price to pay, but can she push her faith and courage beyond all limits? Is she willing to leave behind all she holds dear even if they might die? Is she able to lie, cheat, steal or maybe kill to escape Nazi Germany?
No one realizes what they’re capable of until they make a promise, and Hannah believes promises are to keep.
