I find this amusing to read every night. Although it feels the target audience for this one might be middle school students, the job works for that size. It works as a quick refresher on history. The art is diverse, but they prioritized the last two world wars, which could have been a more intimidating reading context; instead, they decided to feature a larger space for representation. Oddly enough, they only mentioned the participating countries of the war but not the figures. It was a bit toned down compared to the horrors of Hitler and Fascism. I wonder why they disregarded that lens, and whether the sentiment is shared by some critics.

I was interested in learning more about the American Civil War, but perhaps the book only covers highlights for safety or clarity. Choosing what to include must have been difficult for the authors. I enjoy reading this occasionally as a reminder of past hardships. The book's main point appears to be that war, although inevitable, also brings about innovation. I also wonder whether events like the pandemic fit the criteria for inclusion.

The pandemic lasted for three years, so recapping its effects on the world would be a worthwhile endeavor. Overall, reading this book has been a month of discovery. The majority of figures discussed are from Western backgrounds, reflecting a certain perspective. Much of their focus is on the expansion of land and natural resources, and I especially noticed Britain's influence. Today’s societal issues seem different from those our ancestors faced in the past.
