⸝⸝
❝ Of all the women to bring me to my knees, figures it’s the one who comes with the most baggage, but hey, at least we have a matching set. ❞

i had a hard time rating this one. i normally don't like the miscommunication trope but this was a interesting take and i liked that the author did something different. i enjoyed reading this and had fun but now that i sit back and think about it there's some things that could have been better for me.

if i was rating this book on smut alone it would be a easy 5/5 it was well written and the dirty talk and praise was excellent.

⸝⸝
“How do you want me to praise—”
“Good girl.”
“You called me that before, and I loved it,” she explains.
“Tonight you’re going to earn that title.”
“You're going to be my good girl, aren’t you?”

the spice excelled but unfortunately the plot suffered and dragged in the middle.

their relationship was mostly physical connection and attraction. i did like all the banter, texting and flirting. they hook up around the 20% mark and then soon after they have a misunderstanding which turns to dislike to love. my issue was the lack of emotional build-up, even when they had a heart-to-heart later on in the story, it felt rushed that when the 'i love yous' happened i couldn't really buy into the romance.

it was still a easy, very smutty, cute read. just wished there was a little bit more emotional depth.

“𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒖𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒇𝒖𝒏, 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒕𝒕,” 𝑰 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆. “𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒂 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆.”

This book was exquisite! I’ve never read a book about wildland firefighters, and even though this is a romance, you can definitely appreciate the small town and all of its knowledge about wildfires and firefighters infrastructure ! INSANE 🔥 I loved how the author created a glossary, which is one of the reasons why I devoured this book so fast!

We have Callahan who loves women (worships them, actually) but never ties himself down because his one true love is his work. That is, until he meets Prescott (aka Scottie), the new paramedic in town. Since it’s a small town and all that, they naturally get to know each other and their line of work overlap as well 😈

𝑰 𝒇𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒌𝒍𝒆𝒔… 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒘𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎.

Tbh, just a heads up, their relationship you get the giddy fallingin love stage, then a huge miscommunication pause, and then finally the real lovers arc which trust me, once you get there OH IS FREAKING AMAZING ❤️‍🔥

This is a steamy romance, and ohhh does it STEAMS and STEAMS and STEAMS some more 🔥😏 There’s one scene that is just WOW like, insane 🚑🔥 (iykyk). But please remember it’s FICTION!! lol because that scene irl... it’s a bit unsanitary, but who cares in fiction, am I righttt?? 🤪

“𝑰’𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒔𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒅, 𝑪𝒂𝒍. 𝑺𝒐 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒎𝒆 𝒔𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎?”

I loved their chemistry sm! You get to see how their past traumas affect their present and how they both want to fight not just for a better version of themselves but for their relationship as well. Freaking beautiful!! ❤️

tropes
🔥 small town

I don’t enjoy being a hater but whoo boy did I not end up enjoying this. And I bought a physical copy of this. Nobody is more disappointed in me than me right now. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Here’s the thing - the cover? Stunning. The tropes? Fabulous. He’s a firefighter? Yes, please. And the book started off so good! But I got inklings maybe I wasn’t gonna love it when they were f*cking by like 20-30%. And not in like a love at first sight, romantic way. No. Like a “you’re hot, I’m hot, we’re horny, let’s f*ck” kinda way. And that made the sex not so hot for me.

You might be asking yourself “then Lexi, why did you not just DNF? Why’d you keep going?” Well, let me tell you - then they “broke up” (I say broke up but they basically just stopped f*cking because god forbid two people in their early-to-mid 30s have a damn conversation about some shit they heard). So now there’s tension. They dislike each other. I’m thinking maybe it could redeem itself. Maybe they’ll be forced to talk. Maybe they’ll slowly develop feelings. Maybe this will be romantic and lovely and make up for that first ~30%

Spoiler alert: it didn’t.

4.25 stars ✨ i’m mad i kept this unread in my KU library for so long!!

scottie is a new emt in cal’s small town and he’s immediately intrigued. when they’re on the same wildland fire site, things get hot and heavy and he’s ready to put his casual-only ways behind him for repeats with her… until he hears the rumors flying around town that remind him an awful lot of what he went through with his ex.

i am not normally a big angst or breakup + resolution girl but i loved how it was done in this. the whole situation of them misunderstanding each other, being forced together, and then the reveal of scottie’s past had me SAT. i literally finished this book in one sitting. i wish cal had been leading the charge on the apologies a bit more and that we had seen scottie actually verbalize that she wouldn’t be going back to her past instead of cal just taking care of it all but i loved this one and the spice was H O T.

I fell in love with Sloane St. James after reading the Lakes Hockey series, but damn it, I’ve fallen all over again after reading Fight. This book was such an amazing start to the Sky Ridge Hotshot series and to say I’m obsessed is an understatement.

Callahan Woods is a whole ass man and if I could, I’d start a fire in the woods behind my house in hopes he’d show up to save me. The mouth on him had me hot and bothered, while the way he showed Scottie support in navigating her unique situation had me swooning.

The connection between Cal and Scottie was strong from the moment they locked eyes in Shifty’s and only grew more intense as they braved both fire and snow. I loved them both so much and couldn’t get enough of their banter. The text messages had me smiling like a love sick fool and the epilogue was absolute perfection.

Sloane - please, please, please bring me more smokin’ hot, small town men. I’m begging you 🙏🏼

What a fan-fucking-tastic start to what I already know is going to be an amazing trilogy! I straight devoured this book. Couldn't put it down. There are several reasons why and let's get into them.

I first want to preface that this whole trilogy made my TBR for two reasons: these smoking hot covers and the vibes/aesthetics that were presented to me by the authors. I'm sorry but the vibes of this trilogy had me hooked and then when the covers were revealed I was like say less! But let me tell you something, the hype of this trilogy is so appropriately hyped, in fact it may not be hyped enough.

I want to touch on the actual storyline of this book because let me tell you something, I couldn't get enough. I want to preface this with, I don't read blurbs. So to say I went into this book and trilogy solely based on tropes and vibes for a good time. I literally did not know what to expect. And when I tell you I have never in my life read anything like this one before. The storyline of this one is so vastly different than anything I have ever read in a romance novel before which had me so thoroughly invested and was also really refreshing. As I was reading this book, at the beginning I thought it was going to do one way and then BAM 💥 it took a turn that I was not expecting in the best possible way. And it kept unfolding and kept pleasantly surprising me.

As for our main characters, I loved both Callahan and Scottie. Both of our main characters do suffer from their own personal traumas which they are attempting to work through which does cause their miscommunication, which I'm not going to lie at one point I was like Cal, you are a 30-something year old man. Let's communicate and be emotional available but there is a reason for everything and to be honest, the miscommunication was done well. Also I need to touch base of the top tier banter between these two. It was pure gold! I was living for it.

I really don't want to give much away with this trilogy because I went in blind and you should as well. Just know the vibes and aesthetics are there and the story is amazing. I gobbled it up and I think you will as well. In fact after you read this one you will never look at an ambulance or the game of battleship the same way 👀 😉 Happy Reading!

You should most definitely read this book if you like:
- Workplace Romance
- Enemies to Lovers
- Firefighter x EMT
- Miscommunication
- Reformed Playboy
- New Girl in Town
- Strong FMC in Peril/On the Run
- Us vs Nature

*I would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Sloane St. James for allowing me the absolute pleasure to be a part of the ARC read for FIGHT in exchange for my honest thoughts, opinions and review.

The story hinges on themes of redemption, trust, and second chances, yet it struggles to bring emotional depth or meaningful character development to the page.
The "life-or-death" plotline felt contrived, and the resolution left me unsatisfied. The potential for a raw, intense, slow-burn romance was there, but it just never quite ignited.

"Boldness with fear is courage. Boldness without fear is confidence."

“You’re like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I’m alive with you. Callahan, I like you. A lot. And I like who I am with you, but…”; “We’re facing our own battles. I won’t stand by and watch you lose yours because you decided it isn’t worth the energy. I need to know you’ll fight for yourself. If you want to do this, I promise you won’t do it alone. I’ll be at your side the whole time, even when it gets ugly.”

I would definitely read more from Sloane St. James.

Spoiler:

I didn't love 100% of this. I was upset by how the FMC felt obligated to her past, I felt like she owed them nothing. Why should she feel bad? Why should she wait? Why should she start over? I hated that whole thing. How dare they ask for MORE? pissed me off. I also didn't like that the MMC was the one to tip the scale on that plot point. I wanted it to be her, to show all her progress and self-discovery. I also am not a fan of how we had bible verses/religion sprinkled in. I get it was part of the story, but some of it rubbed me the wrong way.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what to expect with this book having just come off of an amazing hockey romance series by Sloane but she blew me away with this story! It was so unique yet so comforting in all the ways that Sloane makes you fall in love with her characters.

I’ve said it once & I’ll probably say it a million more times but Sloane is the BEST when it comes to plot to spice ratio! The story is always so good & the spice? Immaculate!

Thank you Sloane for allowing me to beta & ARC read for you! This was such an amazing start to a new series 🤭

3.5 stars! Fight is the first book in the Sky Ridge Hotshots collab series on KU, all 3 books in the series are by different authors and this one is by Sloane St. James! First of all, the covers for this series are everything. I was obsessed by this artist’s covers last year (Bourbon & Lies, Wolfe, Bourbon & Secrets) and I’m so excited for more covers this year too. The cover vibes are real and this series sounded so good! Wildfire firefighters and the stakes that go along with that.

Tropes: workplace romance, enemies to lovers, miscommunication, new girl in town, one bed, us vs. nature, strong FMC in peril, reformed playboy

Callahan is the captain of a hotshot crew and Prescott is new to town and working as an EMT for the fire department. Cal and Scottie meet at a local bar and instantly feel interaction for one another and start texting, all before they realize they’ll be working together off and on. They hook up early on and are off to a good start until he finds out some secrets about her that has him pushing her away. But cue a hike and a stormy blizzard where she’s in danger to bring them back together…!

“I want us to be more than fun, Prescott,” I state. “I wanna make you mine.”

This was a fun one! I enjoyed the start of this series and can’t wait for the next 2 books now (which come out in just a couple days). Scottie has a lot of previous trauma (religious/cult) and things in her past she needs to work through and Cal is definitely there for her. We get a lot of wildfire action, nature, and high stakes. They end up holed up in a fire tower outpost for a few days and things sizzle up again. Loads of steam and I enjoyed seeing their HEA!

CW (provided by author): abusive religious trauma, including conversion therapy and homophobia. Depictions of claustrophobia, natural disasters, close encounters with wildfire, C-PTSD, panic attacks, and flashbacks of witnessed death.

Final thoughts and spoilers ahead, 3.5*

From the below it's clear I had issues with this book, idk why the MMC's reaction to a bad breakup always has to be to turn into a manwhore, if a woman goes through a bad breakup we cry, drink, rant and move tf on 🙄

Anyways had Cal's 5 years as a manwhore not been mentioned so frequently I'd have definitely rated this much higher, the latter parts of this book when they finally put on the grownup undies and communicated were cute. The smut was top tier , me likey.
Scottie was a pretty good h given the circumstances, she'd grown up in what amounted to a cult and when she couldn't take it anymore she had the courage to strike out on her own and make a better life for herself. The only time Scottie irritated me was when her "husband" came and she agreed to go back with him until they could finally leave together. I just wanted her to choose herself and her happin. (SG she'd been married to her best friend for I think 14 years to save him from the cult. He was gay and would've had to undergo conversion therapy. But they also had sex so idk 😐)
At the end of it I did enjoy this but the journey was unnecessarily stressful because of the way the H was portrayed.

******
Cheating as the h was technically separated when she got with the H
No cheating between the mcs
H was a manwhore but after the h he didn't want anyone else, even during their brief middle of the book separation
Religious cult

Thoughts while reading

Am I heading toward my first DNF of 2025?

Spoilers

*Way too wordy
*Immature and crass secondary characters
*H had been with his high school girlfriend and was engaged to her until 5 years ago when he caught her cheating. He of course turned into a huge manwhore.
*He's got a reputation as a manwhore, his inner thoughts about his antics make me want to junk punch him
*I do not need the H's manwhoring rubbed into my face 🙄
*I like my H's obsessed with the h, he's after her because he's enjoying the chase for once
*h is 32 and seems to have little experience, because of course that's who we'd pair the manwhore with 🙄 shocker 🤦🏿‍♀️. She was in a lavender marriage and came from a cult like religious small town
*How's he gonna show up 40 mins late to their casual hang out and offer no explanation and she's not only cool with that but she also has sex with him 🙄 girl stand up
*Of course he gives the it's only casual speech
*He's such a fuckboy of course she's warned off him
**Excellent smut, except for some cringey porn lines
How're you gonna have a breakup before the book is halfway through?🙄 fuckboy heard some rumours and believes someone he knows is an asshole so he breaks things off 🙄
*Small town where the H was known as a manwhore ewwwwwwwwwwww
*I've never been so happy for the forced proximity trope...his assumptions that caused him to break things of with her without asking a fucking question are finally cleared up.
*at least in their time apart he didn't want anyone else
*The sexy times in this are filthy and I love it
*after they get stranded together things are finally getting better,Cal better not mess this up
**Scottie is married, because of the religious town she grew up in she married her gay best friend to save him from them......but thwy were having sex? Idk maybe he's bi?
*Of course the manwhore gets the "as close to a virgin without being a virgin h"

This was a great first book in a series and intro to this world of hotshots! I liked the MCs a lot but also really liked the glimpses we got of the side characters. The detail that Sloane put into the snowstorm that ultimately set the record straight between Callaghan and Prescott was more than I would have thought- I was impressed. The chemistry between these two was very much felt off the page. Callaghan just SOUNDED like a hottie with a body. He had no problem letting Prescott AKA Scottie know what he wanted. I loved them kind of dancing around each other and then realizing that they were going to be working together. Callaghan gave off this front of not caring about one night stands and ski bunnies when in reality he had been burned BAD and wasn't ready to put his heart on the line. Scottie on the other hand- I did NOT see her backstory being what it was. How original (in my opinion). She is this elusive new woman in town who likes the outdoors and wants to explore things with Callaghan. I liked the switch up of the plot line meaning we had immediate action between these two and then things turned for the worse due to miscommunication and then they got their stories straight and were all in. It felt a little different than other books I have read in this genre.

Scottie is making moves. She has left the past behind (for as long as it will let her), and it trying to strike it out on her own. She gets a job in Sky Ridge as an EMT. She really doesn't have time for anything but work until she meets Callaghan- a local hot shot who is stationed with her. They end up on a training exercise together and things explode between them. Scottie hasn't experienced anything like it. They make plans to continue whatever this situationship is when they get back to town, but then Callaghan turns cold. He drops her like a bad habit, and she is left fumbling and fuming on the sidelines. So when she passes him while summiting a hike, she ignores him trying to continue the conversation. Which is how she has found herself hiding behind some rocks to avoid getting crushed and hypothermia. She just knows that this is the end. She is going to die in the wilderness, but then Callaghan shows up to help her. He leads her to shelter. Provides for her and tends to her wounds. There is so much energy between them that she finally breaks the ice. Which is when she realizes he has learned about her past and took everything the wrong way. When she explains what is actually going on, they reconnect. And now they no they can't let each other go. No more situationship- this is the real deal. But then when they get back to town Scottie's past is there and tries to suck her in one more time. She caves and decides she will go, but Callaghan has other ideas.

Callaghan will never give his heart to another woman. He just isn't into that anymore. He is into making women feel good and then cutting. But then he meets Scottie. They have this thing between them he didn't even have with his fiance. Everything seems so natural- like they have known each other for a long time. So when they end up kind of stranded together on a training exercise- he makes his move. He has never felt that connection with someone. He gets scared and puts his walls up. Makes it seem like he wants to keep having fun. But then gossip gets to him. He misinterprets a situation and his past helps sway his decision to cut ties with Scottie. But he keeps seeing her- everywhere. And now that he is at the bottom of the mountain and doesn't see her car with the bad weather coming in- he does what his gut tells him. He goes to save her. Which is how he has found himself stuck in a small cabin with the woman who rocked his world but lied to him. Eventually they can't fight the tension anymore and when she tells him about her past, he is in awe. She came from that and she is here. He decides no more hiding what he is feeling. He is all in. He wants her in his life. But then her past tries to take her away from him but what she doesn't know is that he wis going to play hardball and will do whatever it takes to keep her.

I thought the character arc for Callaghan was great- it's always reading about the guy who always has a good time being knocked off of his feet. He had a lot of love to give- he was just scared to give it. And then we have Scottie who OMG what a STRONG woman. She has been through hell in a hand basket and made it to the other side. Watching her NOT put up with Callaghan and his ways was entertaining. I have to say the spicy scenes in here were BEYOND creative- the back of an ambulance. Involving Battleship (won't look at that game the same). And Callaghan has a MOUTH on him- fanning myself over here. I can't wait to read the next two- particularly Xander and Callaghan's sister Teddy!! I would definitely recommend this one if you want a sexy firefighter with a mouth on him that gets shut up by the new girl in town.

Thank you so much to Sloane for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Farking fantastic read!

Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trope: miscommunication
Angst: 😱😱😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Let me say up front that I am NOT a fan of the miscommunication trope, but Sloane St James is magic, and Fight is the first book in my best of 2025 pile. Easily a 5⭐+ read for me. I think there are few authors that can manage that perfect balance needed. Wonderful storytelling, the perfect blend of showing versus telling, and complex character development that will get you deeply invested. I laughed out loud, I got angry, I got sad and she'd some tears. And the chemistry! The two MCs were 🔥🔥🔥 together and the combo with Sloane's top tier smexy times nearly made my kindle combust, lol. I can't recommend this book enough!

This book was giving ‘Chicago Fire’ & ‘Fire Country’ in the best way. The soundtrack alongside the book be fire too. (Sorry had to use the pun but it really was a good mix & set the vibe). It had a microtrope I be loving lately….flirty text back & forth and only one bed on crack! Okay & that spice?! Callahan just joined my spicy book bf hall of fame…right next to Cassian. Filthy but sweet at the same time.

Where can I get a Callahan of my own because WOW, I need one ASAP! I was super excited for this book after seeing it everywhere on bookstagram, and let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint. From the very first chapter, I was hooked.

Cal and Scottie are a hot mess in the best way. They’re both stubborn, both carrying some serious baggage, and both terrible at trust. Which, of course, makes for the best kind of tension. There are also some moments where I just wanted to shake them especially Cal! But the chemistry between them? Absolutely sizzling. These two had me glued to the pages.

Scottie’s backstory had me desperate for more details, and I loved how we got little snippets until the big reveal. I honestly wish we could have gone even deeper into her history because she was such an intriguing character.

And don’t even get me started on the survival aspect! It added a unique twist that you don’t see often in romance books, along with all the spice. This book was chef’s kiss perfection!

My first Sloane St James, and what a cracking book this was. I loved Cal and Scottie. This had a lot of up and down moments. I was so bloody frustrated with the miscommunication, but the way it all comes back round and they have that "omg, we're literally idiots" moment made me feel a bit better. Like, we love a self-aware king and queen. That was dumb. Just communicate. But also, it adds to the story, so i get it.
I loved the atmosphere in this, the intensity of the wildfires, the spice that follows, the intensity of the snowstorm, and the softness that follows. Just had all of the vibes. I also didn't see what Scottie was running away from at all. It was super interesting to explore.
I really enjoyed this and I can't wait to continue the series.

Fight had a lot of elements I typically enjoy: high stakes, survival moments, and a firefighter MMC with a haunted past. But while there were parts I liked, the romance didn’t quite land for me.

The story follows Callahan, a hotshot wildfire crew captain still grappling with a devastating loss, and Prescott, a bold and adventurous woman trying to escape her own complicated past. Their relationship starts off casual (friends-with-benefits style), but as secrets unravel and they’re forced into life-or-death situations, sparks fly—though not always in a good way.

What I enjoyed:
🔥 Firefighter Life: The behind-the-scenes look at the risks and camaraderie of wildfire fighting was fascinating.
🌲 Survival and Forced Proximity: Scenes where Callahan and Prescott had to rely on each other during dangerous situations added tension and intrigue.
🎨 Gorgeous Covers: The covers for this book and the rest of the series are absolutely stunning—such a win for the aesthetic!

What didn’t work for me:
• Missed Emotional Depth: Prescott’s past of leaving a cult could have been explored more, but the story leaned on physical attraction rather than emotional growth.
• Miscommunication Tropes: This one relied heavily on misunderstandings, which dragged on for too much of the story.
• Pacing Issues: Their relationship felt rushed—early spicy scenes lacked emotional build-up, and the eventual reconciliation didn’t feel fully earned.

Overall, Fight had some exciting moments and a unique setting, but the romance left me wanting more connection and depth. That said, I’ll definitely continue with the series—the premise and world are intriguing, and those covers are too beautiful to pass up! Fans of high-stakes romances with plenty of drama might enjoy this one, even if it wasn’t entirely my vibe.
