It was either me or my family.
I had no choice but to marry the devil himself.

“In darkness, you shall become mine.”
Those were the words Dimitri Ivanov said to me when he became my husband.
Dark, stern, and handsome, Dimitri is a man of nightmares.
When I’m forced to marry him because of my father, I enter into a world of pure darkness.
Dimitri wants to break me.
Mold me into the perfect wife for him.
I hate him for it.
And yet… my body responds to his dominance.
I don’t know how to love my husband and protect myself at the same time.
All I know is that Dimitri will force me into darkness, whether I like it or not.
He has my body and mind.
But can I ever give the devil my heart?
I’m afraid of the answer… because the answer is yes.

This is the first book in a four book series but can be read as a standalone and has a guaratneed happy ending and NO cliffhangers.

You might want to make sure to double check that you are buckled up, dangerous men, alpha’s personified, possessive, oh, gorgeous, brooding all the makings of a story consisting with three D’s (dark, delicious, and dirty) 😊. There will be suspense, betrayal, death, darkness, secrets reveled, violence, hope, forgiveness, and maybe even love along the way. Sofiya was born into a bratva family knowing her father would choose her husband for alliance purposes only she was taught to be the perfect wife to a bratva boss, and she hopes for a man who will see her value loving her, treat her with kindness, with understanding. Dimitri sexy as all get out a little on the dark side bratva boss he isn’t a man you want to cross, you don’t want him on your radar, an arranged marriage he agrees to but he needs his wife totally submissive to him only he wants her day to begin with him, and to end with him but without all the feelings or so he tells himself. The pull was there from the start but the more he pushed her away the more she wanted and didn’t want him at the same time but she wanted to be herself more but would he learn to listen, will he lose her or will she show him there is more to a relationship than one sided control, and is there happiness somewhere along the way?

I'm a bit conflicted on this review. The book was quite the page turner and definitely kept you turning pages. However, I did not care for the male main character, Dimitri. What a brute. I am not familiar with the Bratva and their ways, but I hate how he treated Sofiya; and her innocence was way over the top.
I have enjoyed some Ivy Davis's other books though.

I was glad that he had softened just a bit by the end of the book.

Glorified domestic abuse

I basically had to force myself to finish this book, only because I really wanted to give the author the benefit of the doubt that the book would turn around. I actually had to step back and re-read a few chapters before being able to write this review. I’m a huge fan of dark romance, mafia, and BDSM, but this was a really bad imitation of a combination of those genres and it was extremely disappointing. This gonna be a long review because things should clearly stated from the beginning this is glorified domestic violence.

*Some spoilers ahead*

Dimitri’s (MMC) character came across as nothing but an uneducated narcissistic/abusive brute. His use of “kidnapping” and “selling her” to make his point of her needing him is possibly seen by many as crazy, but isn’t outside of the norm for a lot of dark romance. I think it’s more the way the author presented the storyline. It’s reads as if even the author has a complete disregard for anyone other than the MMC—Dimitri’s character is full on controlling and manipulating to get what he wants and it the way it’s written reads like domestic violence control. The whole book is an extremely bad presentation of BDSM, him trying to “break” her is mind control to turn her into a “slave” in this instance, but true Master/Slave dynamics is usually chosen and consented to with the stipulation of CONSENTED TO non-consent which this relationship is not.

Sofiya (FMC) was very sheltered child-like young woman who is forced by her “loving” father to marry for the sake of more power. I know how mentality challenging it can be when someone you thought loved you is making you “choose” what’s “best”. This is how the story starts and continues on…she wants everyone to be happy with her, “people pleaser syndrome”, due to her love of her parents and didn’t want to be difficult. I did not see her choice to comply as weakness, but rather a practicality (you learn to obey to gain approval and love). I suppose that made her the perfect naive wife that his type of character would need. While she starts out sweet and compliant, she later becomes the mindless shell of herself that he seems to want and I think that’s what is so concerning. I’ve read thousands of books and I can honestly say this character goes through psychological, emotional, and physical abuse to be a Stockholm Syndrome victim.

As far as the BDSM, this certainly had some elements of that, but it felt more abusive and manipulative the way it was used against Sofiya rather than a healthy, genuine experience. I really, really, really wish people didn’t write about it if they don’t actually know and have experience and a deep understanding of what it is. If you want to establish a consensual non-consent relationship then establish that correctly. I know the author thought “Oh it’s a mafia story, girls never have a choice”, but in trying to make it a BDSM type of establishing master/slave and not actually knowing how to write about it looks like abuse. In this case, the psychological manipulation later all for her to make allowances for his continued mistreatment and eventually accept his treatment as being “loving”. It’s gross and disgusting.

Finally, the mafia subplot was genuinely lacking. The “antagonists” of the book, Alek and Alekos, were weirdly woven into the story and I’ve seen a few reviews saying neither character was needed. This is not entirely true, though I do think their story wouldn’t have made complete sense with having Alekos since he was used against her. I do believe in the long run Alekos story made sense, Alek’s appeared to be sprinkled in for the heck of it, I’m guessing so he can be the main character later in another book 🙄. Though it doesn’t really pop off until 70% of the book Alekos is the main/only antagonist, especially with the way it all ended. Honestly, the author could’ve just had Dimitri as the antagonist if written in a different manner, because he is the one who antagonized everyone & everything. Oh, and the sister? Clearly, Dimitri just likes caged, mindless, & complaint women in his life (not really shocked). Not helping her, but enabling…ew. She also wasn’t a great character either, spoiled, rude, and a liar (the way she treats Sofiya), probably due to being caged, but she’s no more likeable than the others. What a horrible way to live & think. My guess is she’s probably the love interest in a future book sense that seems to be the format authors follow.

The whole book would’ve been much better with more character growth, like they got better with each other, but it was very minimal, especially Dimitri. He was a terrible MMC. The fact that the author makes an “attempt” to show growth for Sofiya’s father was fine, but it fell extremely flat when circles back around to telling her he loves her is a farce: “Dad,” she whispers as tears run down her face. “I wish I could help you, sweetheart. But you do belong to your husband now. And I can’t risk my life. And I don’t want to risk your life. Who will be there for your mother then? I love you.” Gives no growth, pure selfishness and using her mother against her just proves his compliance. The best character was Sofiya’s mom at least she recognized what was going on and wanted to prevent her daughter’s complete loss of self.

I’m all for Dubcon books, but isn’t that. It’s poorly executed, with unlikable characters.

Broken is the first book in a four book series but can be read as a standalone and has a guaratneed happy ending and NO cliffhangers. A beautifully written story with damaged, broken, scarred individuals and a twisty and complex storyline that captures the audience attention and keep you turning the pages. This is Dimitri and Sofiya story which is told from a dual point of view. A dark, twisted, and gripping read. This is a heartbreaking, abusive, unforgiving, read.
Sofiya is a sheltered Bratva princess who is raised to be the perfect and complacent wife. As a mafia princess she knows that one day her dad will pick a husband of his choice without any input from her and arrange her marriage. Her dad made a marriage alliance with the devil himself Dimitri Ivanov. Dimitri idea of marriage is warped and he wants a wife to be totally submission to him. He wants to break her and mold her into what he believes is the perfect wife for him. He uses dominance, forced, punishment/discipline, spanking, fear, degradation, humiliation and pain. He's dark, stern, cold, and damaged. He will force her into the darkness dragging and screaming whether she wants to or not. "In darkness, you shall become mine." A story driven by control, obsession, power and control, madness, and depravity. Dimitri was forcing Sofiya into what he believes he wanted and the entire time he already had the perfect wife but he just didn't realize.
A contemporary romance, organize crime story, morally-grey antihero romance, Bratva romance, dark mafia romance, billionaire romance, aged gap trope romance, arranged marriage romance, forced proximity romance, polar opposite attracts story, forced marriage romance, romantic suspense story with love, consensual intense rough sex, acceptance, drama, passion, heat and more.

Really bad

The story started out good held my interest. However the MMC is so horrible and abusive. I almost quit reading the book, I had to put it down. He spanks her severely ties her to a bed all night. Then arranges for her to be kidnapped making her think she's going to be sold into sexual slavery. Locks her in a cage in a dungeon The author went overboard with the cruelty of the MMC. The MFC is so Bland she makes Milk look exciting. Even after he abuses her all she says is she wants to make him proud about every other page. The story and the writing were good but the characters were terrible I had to stop reading when he made her set naked and tied up in front of his male Associates ! She's an innocent young virgin!! He's treating her like a sex worker women get paid to be naked in front of men. That scene doesn't even make sense he punches some guy for saying something bad about her but yet makes her sit naked in front of his associates. He says he's jealous and possessive. What husband would want all his associates to know what his wife looks like naked. I lik prefer the MMC who say look at her and I'll gouge your eyes out not make her sit around on the floor with her hands tied behind her back. That part of the book doesn't even make sense, it ruined the book for me. Also I don't understand if she's such a shy sheltered virgin why didn't she cry or resist when he made her sit around naked in front of strangers. I could not finish this book it made me so angry that is a trigger for me. if it was listed I would have never started this book. Whatever happened at the end of this book I don't care enough to finish it. What the MMC did was totally Unforgivable, and I can't stand how passive the MFC was. I could give it a minus zero I would not recommend this book to anyone.

I Wanted Spice & Chaos… But Ended Up Annoyed at Dimitri

Okay Besties... let’s talk about "Broken" by Ivy Davis... because this one had me side-eyeing Dimitri the entire time. Sofiya isn’t your typical feisty FMC; she’s sheltered, obedient, and literally raised to please. It was kinda refreshing to see a subservient heroine for once… until Dimitri opened his mouth every five minutes to say he’s going to “break her.” Like, sir... she’s already broken enough, chill.

The fake kidnapping? Weird. The way he treated her like a child instead of his wife? Even weirder. I get it... it’s mafia, it’s dark, but I needed more emotional depth to justify his actions. The writing felt flat, and I found myself craving a stronger, more defiant Sofiya to balance his dominance.

If you like your dark romance ultra-submissive and morally gray, give it a go. Me? I’ll stick with my fierce girls who fight back.

My Ratings: ⭐ 3/5 ▪︎ 🥵 2/5

I may be in the minority, but I wasn’t impressed with this book at all. I gritted my teeth and dragged my mind through molasses the entire way.

The MMC, Dimitri, was detestable; not a single decent quality to be found. I actively rooted against him the entire book; waiting for a demise that was well earned, yet never materialized.

The FMC, Sofiya, her innocence was borderline incompetence. Her overly-sheltered life was impossible to believe considering how outspoken her mother is. And her father is even more detestable than the MMC.

Broken left me with zero connection with the characters or their story.

The only reason this book scored 3 stars is solely because it was at least well written. I may not have enjoyed it, but that doesn’t mean credit’s not given where it’s deserves.

Would not recommend; eventhough I didn’t enjoy this book, I’m still a fan of Ivy Davis!

Dimitri wants one thing from his wife, and that is her total submission; he wants her to be totally consumed by him and only him, and he'll go to some unsavoury lengths for this to happen.

Sofiya has been the perfect Bratva daughter; she has done everything to make her father proud. She knows that her arranged marriage is for an alliance with a more powerful Bratva man, which will enhance her father's standing. She will do the same for her husband; all she needs is love, kindness, and understanding. But she soon finds that lacking in her husband.

Can this marriage work when Dimitri will not listen to his wife's requests? Is he so conceited that he will 'break' his wife totally, losing her spirit, her fight, that draws him to her? Is that what he really wants? Or will Sofiya show him that there can be both light and darkness, pleasure and pain, in their relationship?.

This is the 1st sorry in the House of the Mafia Series that has Sofiya a sheltered Bratva daughter expected and ready to due her part by marrying Dimitri a Bratva man with more power than her family. Dimitri only shows Sofiya his ways of controlling her and does it with other ruthless men to get her total submission. Sofiya will only give her body if he’ll return kindness with understanding and love. Dimitri is filled with past trauma that only allows him to see control is the only way and in doing so her breaks her spirit and will to live. When enemies come for them Dimitri loses control and is given a 2nd chance to bring life back into Sofiya. Will Dimitri’s darkness overpower his heart! Just, no…

I despised Dimitri from the beginning and never changed my opinion about him. He had zero redeeming qualities, and acted more like a spoiled child than a real man. Nothing he said or did many any sense.I hated the way he treated Sofiya in order to “break her” and make her “the perfect wife” for him. Seriously, having her kidnapped on their honeymoon and being auctioned just so he could be the hero and rescue her, in order to make Sofiya completely dependent on him? He continued to humiliate her privately and in front of his associates, and she was too naive and accepting of his punishments. The only part of the book I liked was when Sofiya went after Dimitri with a knife.

Broken is an arranged marriage Mafia romance...although it's not really a romance. The MMC is very narcissistic and only cares about breaking his wife down to complete submission. I usually like dominance, but this one felt more narcissistic, it definitely wasn't dominance in the form of role playing. I usually don't have any triggers, but I found myself very uncomfortable with his way of dominance. All in all it was a good story, I did finish the book, and read it in just 2 sittings. Thankfully it ended on a sweeter note.

This is one really dark Bratva story about a young innocent young woman sold into marriage to a man who doesn't believe in love and only wants complete control of his wife.
Not knowing that her life with Dimitri will be one that Sofiya will never have a life of her own and freedom is never going be for her.
Punished quite brutally at times for the smallest of things that he thinks she needs and keeping her her away from her parents is so cruel.
The relationship between them works on a few levels but only if he realises he has been to harsh with his her.
This is the darkest story I have read but it didn't stop me from reading and things do get better.

This is the first book in the House of the Mafia series. This book starts out with an arranged mafia marriage between two mafia families. Dimitri is the head of the Ivanov family who has agreed to marry Sofiya Smirnov to unite the two families to gain strength and power. While dancing their first dance as husband and wife Dumitri reveals that he intends to break her to make her his perfect wife. The blurb on this really attracted me, however i found i didn't like the characters that much. I admit i like a heroine who had a bit of fight in her, but this one was a doormat and very annoying, given her life, you would expect more from her character, but it was very flat and unlikeable. The MMC Dimitri was the worst, he was determined to break his bride and had few redeemable qualities. It was a hard read at times for all the wrong reasons! Despite this i continued on and can state it was okay in the end, but i don't recommend if you like characters or a plot with any depth.

I really wanted to like this one, but it just did not land for me. Dimitri was not dark and dangerous in a good way, he was just awful. I hated him the entire book. If you are going to have an alphahole MMC, you have to make sure they redeem themselves by the end. The author unfortunately did not accomplish that. Sofiya felt flat and naïve to the point of frustration, and the story dragged more than it pulled me in. The writing itself was solid, but the characters had no depth and the romance did not feel believable. I'm so sad because I usually love Ivy Davis books. Two stars from me.

Ok. I have liked other books by Ivy Davis, but this wasn’t my favorite. I did not like the MMC. He was a narcissist, controlling, detestable. He had no saving qualities about him. It was hard to read. It was an arranged married. I felt sorry for the FMC. She was so innocent. I didn’t like her parents. There really wasn’t a character I connected with at all in this story. I finished the book. I just didn’t like the book. However, the book was well-written and she told the story she wanted to tell. I’m giving her credit for that.

Dimitri wants the perfect wife and feels he has to break her down to be able to mold her into the perfect wife for him. He though is not prepared for Sofiya. She may be innocent and sheltered, but she has a mind of her own and isn't afraid to speak it. Dimitri does some absolutely detestable things in the story, and it takes forever him to see the truth. There was an over emphasis on how she kept wanting to make him proud. Got a bit obnoxious after a while. The story was well written, and the storyline was well flushed out.

This book was absolutely captivating from start to finish. I couldn’t put it down once I started reading. The storyline was gripping and beautifully written, blending deep emotion with just the right amount of spice. The relationship between Dimitri and Sofia was powerful and magnetic—their chemistry felt real, their struggles genuine, and their growth together truly moving.

It’s one of those rare reads that stays with you long after the final page. An addictive, emotional, and perfectly balanced romance. Highly recommended.

Dimitri is a man who gets what he wants and when he sees Sofiya photos he wants her as his wife and lucky for him her fathers a social climber who has no quarms in handing his daughter over to a man like him. Sofiya hates the man her fathers married her off to but Dimitri is determined to get his wifes, body and mind but what of her heart? Whilst the story has a lot of promise, their chemestry felt lacking and having mostly Sofiyas pov didnt help to ender me to Dimitri and his way of thinking it felt almost child like.

Broken is a mafia arranged marriage story. It is filled with emotion.

Sofiya is a sheltered daughter who has been arranged to marry Dimitri. The unity of their families will bring strength. Dimitri s a very powerful man and also very controlling. He wants total submission from his wife. She only wants love and kindness. He doesn't believe in love because of his past traumas. He is also cruel to her.

I loved the chemistry between Sofiya and Dimitri. Highly recommended.

Sofia and Demetri’s arranged Bratva marriage is a brutal cage. He disciplines and punishes to mold her into his twisted ideal of a “good wife,” stripping her naked before his men—then raging when one dares speak to her.
Dark, sexual, unflinching: it exposes how damage breeds damage. Not my favorite—her suffering stings—but the ending redeems him just enough. He’s no monster, just a product of the life. Well-written, believable, raw.

Broken is book 1 in the House Of The Mafia series and is the fantastic, dark, age gap, arranged marriage story of Sofiya Smirnov and Dimitri "The Devil" Ivanov. Innocent in every sense, Sofiya has no idea what to expect from a man many call The Devil. What she doesn't expect to begin to fall in love with him nor him to fall in love with her. This author brings exciting, intriguing, intense, dramatic stories and Broken is no different. This is a great journey and it's definitely a must read!

Dimitri is a man made for nightmare, the man my father says I must marry. Sofiya is an innocent young woman, she’s strong in her own way. Her new husband vows to break her, make her his alone. He seems a brutal husband with very little compassion or emotions. This is a different mafia story it often felt like he was trying to break her spirit, her soul, to break her mind. Broken down is the way Dimitri wants his woman and he'll do anything to accomplish that. Sofya just wants her husband to love her.

The back and forth between the two is off the chart.
I did like this book. I've read a lot of Ivy Davis' books, this one took me a while to like. She does a wonderful job of making you feel what the characters are feeling, like you're in the room with them, and that I love!

We're drawn into the lives of Sofiya and Dimitri. They have a beautiful story, one that captivates and captivates. Their journey began when her father gave her to Dimitri, and he couldn't be more thrilled. He does everything he can to let his wife know she's his and that he won't let her go. A page-turner and highly recommended.

Love it!!!! I hope there is more, I need to know what happens between Sofiya and Dimitri, what happens to Katya, Does Alek ever try anything again to gain control? So many questions!!!!

Dimitri and Sofiya are forced together when her father brokers her as a way to enhance his power and create an alliance. Dimitri wants a subservient wife and Sofiya wants a husband who worships her. The path this book takes to allow us to see their partnership develop is great. This is book one of House of the Mafia, Dimitri and Sofiya's story is full danger, spice, suspense, and plenty of twists that kept me invested from start to finish. It's dark and intense at times. It's not my favorite book from Davis but it'll do. Can't wait to see what Ivy Davis comes up with next.
