(3.5⭐️) This was a good time. The pacing is fast, and it’s messy in that fun, “why are y’all like this?” kind of way, not the stressful, hair pulling kind. The drama never gets too heavy, so you’re not sitting there emotionally drained.
Simonette is a little offbeat and a little chaotic, but it fits her. Daylen is brash, mouthy, and definitely the type that needs to be checked a few times. He says what he says and stands on it. Just straight up unapologetic.
The side characters added a nice layer too. Rissa and Rashad were ignorant and hilarious, and honestly, they helped bring everything together without taking over the story.
This is one of those books you pick up when you want something easy, a little messy, a little funny and just a good time overall

Messing with me
I needed this read after being disappointed in the last book I read (by another author). Mel keeps me laughing with her books lately with the foolishness of her characters and this one was no different.
Simonette was shy and a dork but I loved that about her. She was genuine and didn’t mess with anybody. Imagine having your biggest pops being your mom and sister, who would need enemies with them in your life. I could not for the life of me figure out why they hated this still so bad other than them hating themselves and wanting to tear her down because she was authentic and unbothered. I was glad that Simonette reached out to Daylen and found a genuine connection with him and his sister. She needed someone else to stand up for her like her father did and these two stepped behind her.
The wedding weekend was epic and so funny. Karma was served and Simonette walked away with a man and a best friend. I liked Simonette and Daylen together and seeing him help her get onto of her shell and encouraged her to stand up for herself.
There were some things that were predictable int he sorry, but seeing them actually happen made them that much funnier. I thoroughly enjoyed this story from beginning to end and didn’t mind the minimal errors or inconsistencies.

Love Unexpectedly

This was a cute read, a little corny but cute. Simonette (I hated this name, she was clearly named after her mom) was an unproblematic queen. She minded her business and dove into her work as a forensic scientist. She had no real relationships; friendly or romantically. At 30+ years old it seemed she was content with her life, until her sister and mom interrupted her peace and she felt like she needed to prove something to them.
Daylen was a professional baseball player that had somewhat of a bad boy image. Simonette had been his savior in college and he never thought they would cross paths again. When she needs him he decides to show up. As a young man he was intrigued by her, but still selfish. As a grown man he was still intrigued and decided to show up for her. I love how protective he was of her out the gate. His sister Rissa didn't play either and those were the supportive people Simonette deserved to have in her corner.
Simonette's family was so trash, and yes I'm including the father because he was complicit and it didn't take 30 years to really put his foot down.
Overall, I liked the story even though at times it gave corny and slightly forced. I wanted more from the ending, but such is life with a short story.

Nothing I hate more in a book than a weak FMC. And the FMC in this book was weaker than a leaf on a tree in fall🙃🙃🙃.
It took you getting in a relationship with a man for you to know your worth and acknowledge your strength and boundaries and stop allowing people to walk all over you and treat you like trash?????
Simonette was a 30 year old, college educated woman, in the career field of her dreams, living in her own home yet she read like a childish teenager🤦🏾♀️.
Her mom and her sister were two evil hearted, hateful bitches who treated her like the scum of the earth and the dirt beneath their shoes EVERY SINGLE TIME she came around. And guess what??? She continued to go around them and endure that.
Are we suppose to overlook the fact that the dad was trash as well. Both him and the mom had a favorite child and clearly didn’t hide it. Then wonder why the kids were the way they were. He admitted to leaving all the time for work because he didn’t want to be around the mom while also knowing that the mom was treating one child like trash but catering to and loving the other. But yet we suppose to give him a pat on the back for “defending” Simonette when he does decide to stay around long enough???🤔🤔🤔

Alright now Mel! I loved Simonette, and how she owned her quirkiness. She wasn't worried about what other people were wearing, doing, or saying, she was going to do her! Tutoring and getting her degree was her goal. That is, it, that is all.
Daylen lives and breathes baseball. However, he needs that math grade to graduate. Simonette is brilliant, and cute, but weird and dresses funny. After he does her shady at a party, he tells her that if she ever needs anything to reach out to him.
Simonette's mother and sister are straight trash! 🤬 The way they treated her was uncalled for, and unprovoked! 😤 When Simonette is backed into a corner, she needs that favor from Daylen. Wasn't sure how they would pull this off, being so different and with Simonette being so green to almost everything. But Daylen's sister Rissa quickly befriends her and brings her out of her shell, while showing her that she is beautiful inside and out. The feelings brought forth in Daylen for Simonette are shocking to him. He never thought he would want an exclusive relationship, especially with someone like Simonette. However, this woman is different from the girl he knew in college, and he is really feeling her. They were adorable together, and the way he handled her family for berating her was top tier! Loved it! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

This was such a hilarious read! I enjoyed the foolishness that went down in this one. Very cute & quick book I finished it one sitting.
Simonette was such an angel but my girl was wayyyy to niceee for to long! It made me happy to see her stand up for herself. I loved her and Rissa bond!!
Daylen was an absolute trip! That man didn’t care what came out his mouth. I liked how hard he went for Simonette once they reconnected and how he built her confidence up! That’s a good mannnn!
I felt these two complimented each other well since they were opposites. She was the calm to his storm and they were very cute!

This book was so good. The funny moments are always on point. The relationship between Sim and her dad was everything. I'm so happy that she came into her own, and finally started putting folks in their places.
Daylen, Rashad, and Rissa loved her unconditionally as well as her dad. I'm happy that she called in the favor because love always wins.

Simone and Lanette where the prime example of that statement because they treated Simonette like 💩. I’m glad that Declan divorced his wife Simone and Lanette’s husband Justin didn’t go through with their wedding. Karma is a bad mother shut ya mouth.

This was an amazing love story with straight drama. Relatable drama I couldn’t put the book down and was made when I was interrupted lol. Mel did an amazing job the was my first booked but definitely won’t be my last. This was an amazing read. I love it here 🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️

Day and Sim
The college interaction between Day and Sim had me thinking a much different storyline was in the works but what we got was true Mel Dau goodness with a trope that can be hard to pull off if not done right. Thankfully, she got it right.
Now, admittedly, our first interaction with present day Dalyn had me questioning if I liked him as a MMC but after he agreed to the favor, he seemingly did a 180 and became my favorite type of Book Bae - one who is a little unhinged and will get reckless in the mouth and actions with anyone who disrespects his woman.
Him and Rissa kept me laughing out loud with their interactions with Simone and Lanette. Mr Barnes also had a few good LOL moments too. That wedding weekend was very much SOMEthing!
I loved that the author didn't change Sim with some unrealistic "glow up", she was who she was and Day really saw and grew to love who she was.
The bulk of the story was only over the course of a few days, but it didn't feel rushed and it was enjoyable to me to see Day help Sim flourish while he and Rissa both encouraged and empowered her to finally stand up for herself. I really enjoyed this one and didn't want it to end.

i don't know who was worse, the mama or the absentee father. I don't like how everyone gave the father a pass for being an ain't ish father. He knowingly allowed the wife to raise one child "bad" while he gave the blacksheep pats on the back every now and then. He purposely stayed away and allowed the wife to do whatever then when he is ready to divorce her he then decides to start moving some furniture.

Oh… I had to DNF this book and omg???
The fmc is the definition of weakkkkk. Idk I’m only 30% in and i honestly had to skim through it.
My first ick was the MMC… it wasn’t him being a dog cause yeah yeah he’s rich famous it’s expected. But idk the way he spoked about the FMC “oh it was an empty promise… she wore a church dress the a party..” w.e the fuck he said. To me it felt like he was making fun of the girl and I can never. Whenever I read a book and the FMC is a bookworm, sweet, soft w.e it is I expect the MMC to love those characteristics about them and I wasn’t feeling that with them so that was just done for me honestly.
I don’t like books where parents have favorites and they don’t hide that shit. The dad was just as bad as the mom and that’s what created those tensions between the sisters. They’re all just horrible all around.
Also it’s just not believable to me if I’m being honest. It sounds like Simonette is a pretty girl and for her to be successful and 30 it doesn’t sound believable that she hasn’t had at least her first kiss yet. I love an unexperienced character don’t get me wrong… but I’m sorry you can’t be both inexperienced and a push over.

Delaney was a standout for me. He’s confident, grounded, and the way he steps in and unapologetically puts people in their place when it comes to Simonette? Whew. I forgot how PRESSURE Mel Dau’s pen game is! When I tell y’all I enjoyed the HECK out of this story… it was everything. It had me laughing, side-eyeing, and fully entertained from beginning to end. Exactly what I needed!
At first, I wasn’t really feeling Daylen. He had me side-eyeing him heavy in the beginning, but baby… he redeemed himself. Him, Rashad, and Rissa had me cracking up the whole time. Their dynamic was top-tier.
What started off as a fake dating situation between Daylen and Simonette quickly turned into something real—and I loved every minute of it. She got herself a man who did not play about her… and a true friend. And let’s just say Daylen definitely turned Simonette out 😏 lol. Ohhh and I love how he told her to “Drag her nut.” I don’t know what that means but when I did I was like yasssss Simonette drag your nut!!!
Now, even though I liked her dad, I was still side-eyeing him over how he handled his wife and Lanette’s behavior. Instead of standing up and dealing with the mess at home, he chose to avoid it. And I still don’t understand how Simone could treat her own child the way she did, but I digress. She and Lanette got exactly what they deserved for being entitled and messy. I was so proud of Simonette for finally growing a backbone and standing up for herself. They played in her face for far too long!

Ohhh and I love how he told her to “Drag her nut.” I don’t know what that means but when I did I was like yasssss Simonette drag your nut!!!
Now, even though I liked her dad, I was still side-eyeing him over how he handled his wife and Lanette’s behavior. Instead of standing up and dealing with the mess at home, he chose to avoid it. And I still don’t understand how Simone could treat her own child the way she did, but I digress. She and Lanette got exactly what they deserved for being entitled and messy. I was so proud of Simonette for finally growing a backbone and standing up for herself. They played in her face for far too long!
This book gave humor, growth, romance, and drama. I was locked in the whole time.

Fckin With Me* by Mel Dau was one of those books that pulls you in because of the characters. They felt real, flawed, emotional, and sometimes annoying in a way that made sense. Nobody was perfect, and that’s exactly what made the story hit.
Simonette’s growth was probably my favorite part. Watching her start off quiet, overlooked, and unsure of herself, then slowly step into her confidence and realize her worth was so satisfying. I loved how she didn’t magically change overnight her journey felt earned. And seeing people like Daylen and Rissa genuinely support her instead of tearing her down? Chef’s kiss.
Daylen surprised me in the best way. He wasn’t just a love interest he actually grew. His loyalty, the way he showed up, and how he learned to really see Simonette made the chemistry between them feel real and not just physical. The tension, the miscommunication, the push and pull yeah it was frustrating at times, but in a realistic way. Like, “now why would you do that?” but also… I get it.
The family drama added just enough chaos to keep things interesting without taking away from the love story. It was messy, emotional, funny at times, and honestly relatable. You could tell past hurt played a big role in how the characters moved, especially when it came to trust and vulnerability.
Overall, this book worked because the characters carried it. The chemistry was undeniable, the emotions felt authentic, and the growth made the ending worth it. Definitely one of those “just one more chapter” reads that has you finishing the book faster than planned.
If you like romance with depth, real character development, and a little mess mixed in, this one is absolutely worth the read. Mel Dau did her thing no notes. 📖✨

The cover piqued my interest. The synopsis drew me closer. But it was my sister Ruby that had me 1-click to buy this book. And omg was this book hotter than the hottest pepper on the scoville scale!! 🌶🌶🌶🔥🔥🔥
First, I loved and appreciated the back story. It made a huge difference for character development. And just after reading the first 2 chapters I was ready to drop kick Simone and ratchet behind daughter Lanette into the next hemisphere. Talk about two of the most bougie, nasty, disgusting bold faced liars! I'm so glad Simonette reached out to Daylen. Better yet I'm so glad he still carried that cell phone. Cause Simonette needed a bulldog in her corner. And he came with reinforcements! Rissa & Rashad. Those 2 had me ROTFL! The shenanigans!
I loved Day for Sim and vice versa. Their story was soooo good! I LOVED everything about this story and was so excited for Simonette!!!…Who would have thought that 1 phone call would open up not just her eye, but her heart to love, a world to a beautiful friendship and a beautiful personality that was loved by many!!!…I love that she let her balls drag and NEVER stopped!!!…

Hmmm 🤨, I’ve intentionally avoided reading Mel Dau books primarily because her storylines, although frequently humorous characters are misogynistic, objectifying, while the FMC & or MMC were complicit in ignorance, socially & ethically ambiguous and disingenuous. …IE: Why would a convoy of people travel aboard (thirty hours) to be humiliated⁉️..That’s cruel, irresponsible, disrespectful & disturbing behavior for any adult particularly parents 🤬🥴‼️Nevertheless, I was intrigued by the cover of “Acquisition of Love: A Brand New Love”. Only to discover, Ms. Dau redirected readers to “F*ckin With Me” (3.75 ⭐️’s - 4.0 ⭐️’s potential) prior to reading upon “Acquisition of Love: A Brand New Love”was also disingenuous. Unfortunately, the end doesn’t justify the means. …I refuse to further subject myself to the toxic, juvenile & duplicitous antics of Ms. Dau’s books/plots/characters/storylines. The long game “my” long game from Mel Dau productions is my contribution to m sanity and the evolution of ethic pride❤️✊🏾🖤✊🏾💚‼️

Mel Dau Does it Again…
Daylen was the popular athlete in college, while Simonette was the geek that helped Daylen out to pass his classes to graduate and become the Pro Baseball player. Meanwhile for Simonette she made a name for herself in forensics but she still was a geek. That was until her mother and little sister came for her when it pertained to her little sisters wedding. NOW what started out as something made up for Daylen and Simonette bloomed into realness. While Rissa was Daylen’s little sister, she was the sister Simonette longed for and Rissa didn’t play. Mr. Brand, Simonette’s Father loved his entire family BUT he was tired of his wife and younger daughter treatment towards Simonette and definitely tried to have them change their ways…Loved every bit of the book and if Simonette was a real character I would praise her for her strength and being the one to find forever love!

My heart hurt for Simonette because her mom and sister treated her terribly, constantly tearing her down. So when her sister’s wedding came around, she called in that favor and asked Daylen to be her fake date.
And when I tell you Daylen showed up and showed out, he did exactly that! Not only was he the perfect fake date, but he and his sister helped Simonette realize she deserved better and encouraged her to finally stand up for herself. Watching her find her voice and stop accepting toxic treatment was so satisfying. Their chemistry was amazing, and I loved seeing their fake relationship turn into real love. Such a sweet, feel-good story with romance, growth, and a well-deserved happily ever after!

This is a novella that’s under 200 pages (well on my kindle it was). My first read by this author and I’m so glad! This was just what I needed. I was giggling throughout and really rooting for Simonette! I love a quirky FMC, we’re all unique and embracing that in a world that’s trying to make carbon copies is essential. She reminded me of Stevie aka Wanda (Jahquel J) and Jaeda Dillinger (Kimberly Brown). Anyways… this book was so good! There’s drama, there’s confidence building, an MMC who stands by his word, found family and sheer audacity from some of the side characters!! Daylen and Simonette’s daddy showed you who real men are. Yes the dad had his flaws and you could say he failed the other child but she wasn’t our focus! Our Sim was and he rode for her so from that perspective he was alright with me. From fake dating to riding at dawn for Sim against her haters, what wasn’t there to love!!!

What started out as a fake relationship between Daylen and Simonette as a favor to her ends up being an unplanned romance. The way Daylen and his sister, Rissa, stood ten toes down for Sim was just the thing she needed. Daylen taught Sim how to stand up for herself as well as about love and passion. I couldn't stand Sim's mother and sister for the way they treated Sim. Those heffas ended up getting what they deserved in the end though, and I was happy about that. Rissa turned out to be the bestie that Sim was in need of. There were so many laugh out loud moments in the book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm hoping the author will provide us with a book with Rashad in the future. I would love to read about the woman who finally tames him. 😂😂 Mel Dau has brought us another great book that I enjoyed from the very first page!!

I loved this book, it was referred to me by a friend and it was just what I needed to read! The FMC Mother and Sister were horrible, but I could tolerate him - but it was a lot that he should've checked MANY years ago! I loved the MMC (not initially) but as an adult I loved him and his family! Rissa was a favorite of mine, and I loved the friendship that developed between her and the FMC! I also loved the relationship of the MMC, his father, and sister...and his best friend (he was a wild one, I would love to hear about him eventually settling down)! I loved the sports-romance aspect of the book, it was there but it wasn't too much!
The FMC Mom and Sister reminded me of Cinderella and how they treated her! Like she wasn't good enough and she was the child that had everything going for herself!

I loved this!! It was the perfect roadtrip audiobook listen. Simonette is such a relatable character in wanting her mother’s approval but needing time to finally stand up for herself. Once she did, it was on and poppin. Daylen had me nervous in the prologue cause he wasn’t giving what I needed in a desirable MMC. But he proved himself after meeting up with Simonette and showing out her by stunting on her mom and sister with the private jet. Her sister had a lot of nerve demanding to fly on the private jet with them while also treating her sister like crap. I loved how Simonette’s dad stood on business but he should have BEEN did that!! I absolutely loved how Rissa genuinely cared about Sim and because her biggest cheerleader! Having real friends that encourage you to stand on business is so important!

I was a little sad not having to read about Sim and Day’s wedding and where it was how did it go and all but like Day say “you must pick and choose your battles” 😟 but it was still beautifully wrapped up with a little update on everyone.
This book was a wonderful reset to me as a reader who loves everything black love with those strong BDE main male characters and the female that they will go bat shit crazy for without the messiness of the characters (if I make sense).
