In a future where humanity survives in domed shelters controlled by a powerful Agency, agent Josie Clements uncovers shocking secrets about the domes, her brother’s mysterious death, and the true cost of loyalty. Teaming up with fugitive Cleo Michaels, they must confront half-truths that could shatter their world and their sanity. Can they face the devastating consequences of the truth?
During her time in the academy, Josie Clements is being trained to serve The Agency, until one mission leaves her with more questions than answers. Haunted by her brother’s death, Josie’s search for the truth could either save the lives of those within the Sixth Dome or place them in greater danger.
As a debut novel, Agency is nothing short of impressive. Clarke’s ability to create a dystopian world that feels both expansive and believable is remarkable. While I wouldn’t want to live within one of the domes, I felt completely transported there as I read.
Clarke’s writing is both vivid and immersive without being overdone. The prose was concise without ever feeling sparse. The first-person perspectives of both Josie and Cleo provide a compelling and intimate lens through which the story unfolds, pulling the reader deeper into the narrative.
The relationships between characters add depth and emotional resonance to the story. By the end of the book I had very clear opinions on all characters, even secondary ones. By the end, every character - major or minor - felt distinct, and their arcs kept me invested and guessing where they might end up.
The plot is tightly constructed. Twists and revelations feel earned rather than forced which is no mean feat in a 300 page novel. Clarke demonstrates an impressive command of pacing, maintaining just the right level of tension to keep readers engaged throughout.
Agency is both compelling in the moment and memorable afterwards. Something I haven’t said much this year. It’s a rewarding read for established fans of dystopian fiction, but also an excellent entry point for newcomers to the genre. It’s the kind of book I know my younger self would have devoured and returned to time and again.
Jamie Clarke, you have absolutely nailed your first novel. I cannot wait to read whatever you come up with next.
Great story line. I love dystopian style writing. Whatever you think is going to happen, doesn’t. This book can be a standalone but I hope there is a sequel.
Wow! This book gave me Hunger Games/ Divergent vibes. I was drawn in and it held me until the end. The world building and overall story was well written. In the end, I wanted more and cannot wait to see where this story goes!
This book blew me away. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first started reading it but I was so sad when it ended. I truly hope there is more to come and I’d be lying if I said I’m not shipping Cleo and Josie just a little.
If you look back through my lists you’ll notice in February I read an unknown book, this was that book but the first draft, and I’m so glad it’s out! As far as debut novels go, this one is up there for one of my favourites I’ve ever read. It’s corrupt government meets dystopia, I enjoyed every single moment spent in this world and can’t wait for more! I love the camaraderie/tension between Josie & Cleo, I love the unanswered questions about Lawson & Stephen. I’m not biased because she’s my best friend, it genuinely is an amazing read and deserves every single bit of praise it receives!
An absolute page turner! Fantastic storyline and characters. What a way to make your debut as an author. Well done! I read this at bedtime and couldn’t put it down till I was finished!
😊ARC Reader!😊 . To say I was surprised by this book is a complete understatement.
Growing up in the Dystopian YA genre, I really thought in the beginning of the book that I had already figured out the ending. That couldn't be further from reality. The twists and turns this story had, took me by surprise every single time. . The writing is incredible, I was captivated since the beginning, the way the author was able to put the reader right in the middle of the story had me on the literal edge of my seat (I finished it on an airplane😂), feeling like I was right there with them. The story line in itself is compelling and hooks you from the start. There's never a dull moment, even in more exposition chapters, they never feel like fillers, there is purpose but also feeling in every line. . More importantly for me, is that there is not one character that is just there, they all have personalities and you feel them in the pages, you connect with them. My favourite part of it all however, and really made this an automatic reread for me, is how flawed our main characters are. They aren't all good and only pure, but they aren't just evil. I can see them as real people with flaws, with fears, with pain and grief and that is what makes them real and beautiful. . Overall, the way the author touched subjects like, grief, friendship, relationships, the good and the toxic side of them, how she portrayed how codependency can be mistaken by devotion, was done with immense empathy and care. . Final thoughts: A beautiful story about broken people who are trying to continue life even when it's to heavy. ❤️ Curious to read what comes next. ❤️
🍁Recent Read Review🍁 Agency by Jamie Clarke ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🍁ARC READ🍁
Josie Clements was top of her class when training for The Agency. Now she’s sent on a mission that will change all of her opinions on what she thought she knew. Haunted my her brothers death, Josie needs to find out if her gut instinct is really worth following. No matter what it might cost her.
As a debut novel this is an incredible dystopian world that was so easy to get fully stuck into. The first person and multiple POVs from Cleo and Josie really brought these characters to life and allowed me to connect with them, along with every character in the book.
A completely addictive read that I could’ve read in one sitting (had it not been the middle of the night and I didn’t have to get up the next day). I Absolutely cannot wait to find out where this story goes.
I feel if I had read this in my teenage years it would have been a total comfort read and it would have been one I revisited many times.
Jamie you absolutely smashed this out of the park and I cannot wait to see what else you come up with! I am so proud of you! #books #bookish #reader #review #booknook #reading #bookstagram #bookclub
This is like living through Under the Dome during Covid... Unbelievably good!!! Keeps you on the edge of your seat and you just want more. Josie if the FMC and man is she a badass.. Cleo comes in later as an assignment but that all changes when she shares info with Josie. I seriously hope there are more books from this author with these characters cause I seriously need more. “This review was based on a complimentary pre-release copy.”
