I already had a life. A future. A man I'd promised forever to.

But the night I found Chase Rhodes—bleeding, broken, and more lost than I was—everything changed.

I wasn't supposed to let him in. Wasn't supposed to write music with him in secret beneath the moon.

What started as a quiet escape became something unstoppable. Our songs caught fire, and now the whole world knows our names.

Music has a way of pulling the broken together, even when the timing is impossible and the fallout inevitable.

But some hearts don't settle. Some songs were never meant to stay quiet.

Because the night I saved him was only the beginning.

And loving me might be the last risk he'll ever take.

From USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Hartmann comes a new angsty, standalone contemporary romance.

⭐️ 5 ⭐️ Why do Hartmanns books hit so hard? She writes about the most broken, bleeding kindred souls who are so lost and hurting and she sets them together on a path of heartache and healing. Hartmann has such a way with words--the adrenaline, the rush, the high, the crash.

The yearning.
The almost.
The not yet.

She writes that songs have lungs but for me it's her words. Her words are the air that I breathe or the breath that I hold when I read her stories. Her words carry so much weight and there is always so much meaning between the lines, I simply can't put into words how much of my younger self I see in ALL of her characters and stories. I feel like I find pieces of myself hidden in the journey that she takes us on.

In Pieces of the Night, Annalise and Chase are two broken chords navigating grief, hope and betrayal while chasing dreams and stars, always reaching but never touching. Annalise Adams is singer/vocalist in an emotionally abusive relationship while Chase Rhodes is a broken and bleeding man, also a musician that is struggling with grief. Fate brings them together and what starts as a quiet midnight escape turns into something unstoppable and tragically beautiful.

Their love is that of a broken record where being broken is the loudest quiet ever. She is his midnight, the broken pieces of the night. He's the truth that unravels all the lies she used to live by. The title of the book has so much hidden meaning! It will tug on all your heart strings! This is one of those stories that will stay with you for a long time. Simply breathtaking..

Rating to come - will likely be 2 stars

This was very emotionally taxing, and unfortunately, not with even one ounce of the emotional gratification of healing that I usually get from JH books.

I think the first thing we need to do is reframe expectations before going into this book:
• It is not forbidden romance; it is much closer to a love triangle.🔺
• The first 55% focuses primarily on the cycle of abuse and gives a very strong depiction of a relationship with a manipulative, narcissistically inclined partner.
• While the book is angsty, the tension itself isn’t really there, which makes it lack the emotional punch it could have delivered.

🧠 Annalise & the Cycle of Abuse
Reading this felt like having the same exact conversation over and over again with a best friend stuck in an abusive relationship.
The amount of guilt Annie internalises, along with the constant “I’m not enough” and “I should try to fix this” narrative, really showcases how damaging an abuser can be to the way their victim sees themselves.
You clearly see how someone becomes trapped in that loop: the entire world points out something they can see as well, yet they still refuse to accept it and keep offering excuses.
And listen, you need to be prepared for this part. It is very present and takes up a huge chunk of the book.
It also includes a clear — though not graphically described — non-con moment, which, up till now, is not mentioned in the Content Warning section.

🌿 The Missing Healing
What I usually seek in JH books is the way she puts the healing process into words that hurt beautifully.
But throughout this book, despite the many phases and opportunities Annalise goes through and gets, she does not actively heal from what the abusive relationship did to her and her psyche.
Her choices change, yes.
But even when she believes she is choosing herself, we do not see that choice translate into behavioural or psychological change that reflects true internal freedom or self-love.

Because of that, the parallels drawn between the two relationships — emotionally and practically — do not land differently from Annie’s side. She hasn’t grown beyond the cycle of abuse yet.
The difference between the relationships ends up being Chase: his behaviour, his intentions, the reasoning behind his choices and his words.
And I expected more from that dynamic. It hurt a bit that I didn’t find it.

🤔 The Alex POVs
Throughout the book, we also get POV chapters from Alex (the abuser).
For the life of me, I cannot figure out why these chapters exist.
Are they supposed to create sympathy?
Show us the mind of an abuser?
Soften the emotional blow of certain moments by giving his perspective?
I genuinely don’t know.
But instead of adding depth, they mostly frustrated me.

🎸 Chase’s Arc
Chase is consistently a good guy throughout the book. He makes decent choices, even when he makes mistakes. He carries a lot of pain and guilt.
But I wouldn’t go as far as calling him a “tragic hero”.
The reason is that a large part of his own healing journey gets sidelined. Much of his POV focuses on his falling for Annalise and trying to push her toward seeing herself as enough, seeing the talent she has.
His own tragic story only really resurfaces around 78% of the book, and it arrives in a way that feels very isolating for us as readers.

✍️ Narrative Instrument Choices?
I also noticed a shift in the writing style.
At the beginning, the narration really leaned into the poetic and lyrical minds of both Chase and Annalise. But as the story progressed, that tone slowly disappeared and moved toward something more neutral.
I don’t believe this was a conscious stylistic choice, because the moments where that lyrical voice should have been strongest — when these two were supposedly at their peak — were actually where it was most absent.
There were also narrative sections that felt more like recounting or listing events rather than letting us experience them through storytelling. Ironically, those moments were often supposed to be the emotional payoff for readers, but instead they felt flat and stale.
While I’m mentioning structural choices, substance abuse is brought up briefly and not explored adequately. It becomes a fairly significant plot point through one of the side characters. It felt a bit inserted (almost stereotypically if you ask me), especially since there were no prior warning signs or buildup suggesting that direction.

💔 Final Thoughts
This was a sad book, but not in the way I personally like my sad books.
There were no smiles, and no emotional payoff for the investment I put into it.
The blurb does not really prepare you for how much space and mental energy the abusive relationship occupies. Meanwhile, the real romantic relationship between Chase and Annalise only takes up about 30% of the book.
The characters are not one-dimensional, but the book focuses on the ONE reality and the ONE dream, making it all feel like it’s told in a tunnel vision manner.

I come to JH books for the beautiful thread of how trauma and baggage manifest in people, and for the authentic healing journeys that breathe life into readers.
Unfortunately, I cannot say I found that here. And to my dismay, I ended up skimming the last 35% because I was emotionally exhausted and just wanted to reach the end.

I received an ARC as part of Jennifer Hartmann’s Content Team.

As always, Jennifer’s book made me feel the whole spectrum of emotions! This is a love story deeply intertwined with music. The writing is very poetic, and the book even has its own single, No Maps—which is so cool!

The main characters are two broken kindred souls who had to go through so much before they could finally find happiness. I loved Chase right away—he supported Annalise so much and longed for her, and I was really rooting for her to finally choose him.

The last part of the book kept me on edge, and my heart broke when I realized the hidden meaning behind the title!💔

I also have to say that Jennifer creates the best playlists! Thanks to her, I keep rediscovering old songs. I can’t even count how many times I listened to While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Hallelujah. So if you want to fully experience the atmosphere of this book, I definitely recommend reading it with the playlist!

I can’t wait for more books from the Queen of angsty romances!❤️‍🩹

Thank you so much to Jennifer Hartmann and her team for giving me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Well... fuck

I actually wasn't expecting another Jennifer Hartmann book to absolutely wreck me, but this definitely did! I was laughing and grinning and swooning and crying non-stop throughout the book and I loved every single word that Hartmann put into this! It's so tender and beautiful and emotional! Such a perfect story!!!
I was actually sobbing by the end because for me this was definitely a perfect romance book and one of my favorites from her. I love her dark romance books, but I have such a soft spot for her contemporary books because they are perfection!

3.5 stars and I am shocked 🫨 jennifer hartmann is consistently a 4.5 or 5 star author for me but this didn’t hit the same for me 🤷🏼‍♀️

let’s run through the good & the bad.

the good:
- jennifer hartmann is a genius with words & her writing is consistently some of the most beautiful. a book bathed in a love & appreciation for music & lyrics was the perfect path for her. every page was overflowing with beauty.
- the found family in this one is unmatched. a band of misfits, all fitting together in this complicated puzzle that doesn’t always make sense at first glance, but fits together perfectly.
- the midnight sessions were my favorite chapters. no frills, just two friends with underlying feelings, sitting under the moon & writing lyrics. talk about the mundane but the beautiful.
- the crazy meet cute at the beginning was a wild ride & I loved every second of it.
- him being the only one to call her annie >>> 🥹😍

the not so good:
- I really didn’t love that annie was in a relationship for over half of this book. didn’t like the cheating, didn’t like the midnight hangout sessions where they obviously were feeling each other - idk felt very icky to me. not that I liked alex because I didn’t, but I just wanted her to cut that off so much earlier.
- the ending felt rushed. the conflict the entire story was alex and then bam!! another bigger fiasco comes into view at 85% and is somehow completely resolved by the epilogue. I know it was slightly foreshadowed, but it just kind of came out of nowhere & then was cleaned up in a few chapters.

I love love LOVE jennifer hartmann. I could spend hours rattling off all of my faves by her & what they mean to me. this is the outlier - and that’s okay! you don’t have to love every romance book by your fave author ❤️‍🔥

thank you netgalley for the arc!!!

"You smile, I smile. It's as simple as that."

"We're not written in the stars. We are the stars."

wow. i am still trying to process all the emotions jennifer hartmann made me feel while reading this book. my heart absolutely broke when i finally realised what the title meant.

the writing in pieces of the night is beautiful and poetic. since this is a rockstar romance, the book incorporates a lot of lyrics and music references and it was just so unique and cool to see! i also really liked the found family aspect within this book. it wasn't just with annalise and chase, but with the whole band as well. i really liked those side characters, each is like a lost puzzle piece and they become whole when they're all together.

annalise and chase have my heart. the way they were just two broken souls trying to navigate life but then at the same time trying to chase their dreams made my heart ache. we have to see them hurt before they finally find happiness. something i haven't mentioned yet but really enjoyed was the insane way these two met. this instantly grabbed my interest because i honestly couldn't think of a crazier way LOL.

one thing i didn't really like was the cheating trope. unfortunately, i'm not a fan of that. it's not because i liked alex, but rather the idea itself. but that's my only complaint, because this was a great and emotional story!

4.5 ⭐️ ARC Review - I was smiling, swooning, giddy and in pain the whole way through. This is a true slow burn, the kind that builds so beautifully so when it finally hits, the TENSION is painfully perfect. At its heart, it’s a tender story about two broken people finding comfort and solace in each other. The element of found family is KEY throughout the story and is so heartwarming.

I must have highlighted at least 60 quotes 🤭 Jennifer’s way with words is just something else. The writing is so poetic it had me emotional on its own. I felt everything right alongside these characters, love, heartbreak, jealousy, sadness. That’s the magic of her storytelling… she pulls you in so deeply it all feels real, like you’re living it with them.

This was such a beautiful, emotional story! Chase & Annie have my heart.

3.75⭐️ as someone else in the reviews previously said, this book is absolutely giving Drive meets A Love Letter to Whiskey. A angsty, and emotional rockstar romance, only they’re both the rockstars. I had the opportunity to listen to the ALC narrated by Austin Stone and Angelina Rocca, both narrators did a phenomenal job. However, the tone that was used for Alex automatically gave me the ick for him (which is valid) but there were times Chase laughed and sounded like Alex and it immediately made me cringe, because I despised that man.

When an act of desperation leads our MMC Chase to steal a car, unknowingly kidnapping a very drunk Annie as well, fate was absolutely at play. Annie is struggling to find her place, wanting to chase her dreams through napkin lyrics, all while struggling with a plethora of guilt from a tragic accident that happened when she was 16. All while feeling trapped, and obligated in an unhealthy relationship. One terrible decision made by Chase that night was the stepping stone to the ripple effect that leads to late moonlit lyric sessions, a band that was meant to be, and collateral damage left in his wake that may end up saving his life in the end.

This book deals with grief, and makes you wonder if the people that crash into your life is an act of fate, even if it’s by terrible circumstances. While I absolutely despised Annie’s boyfriend, this book does have the cheating trope (emotional, and a kiss).
While I loved the story, the side characters, as well as Chase (and Annie when she pulled her head out of her a**). I found this to be a tad repetitive, even the similar issue between the 2 male love interests, while the ending felt very rushed, I felt like I wanted more. There is another trope in this book other than cheating I don’t particularly care for, but unfortunately I feel like it’s too much of a spoiler to share. This was a solid emotional book by Jennifer Hartmann, it just wasn’t my favorite of hers.

Thank you so much to Podium Entertainment for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.

Wow! Jennifer Hartmann does it every single time. She just knows how to write such beautiful stories. That pulls you in and makes you feel every single emotion. This one wrecked me in the best way. Chase and Annalise’s story is full of so much angst and emotion, that you can’t help but feel every single up and down with them.

Chase the man that he was. Completely stole my heart. She just has a way with writing beautifully broken men. I absolutely loved the found family in this one. It was full of banter and heart that just added even more to the story. And toaster the dog omg loved him! The every thing happens for a reason was executed so beautifully well. The way everything came together in the end was just so meaningful, emotional and so Jennifer Hartmann.

Overall this was a beautiful, emotional story but heavy. Please add this one to your tbr! It releases on 4/7. I’m so incredibly blessed to be on team Jennifer Hartmann! Thank you so much for this ARC🖤

A Rockstar Romance that shows both the beauty and the raw truth of life. 🎸✨

I highlighted at least 50 quotes in this book. Jennifer Hartmann truly knows how to write the most beautiful words. Her writing has a way of pulling you in and making every emotion feel so real.

One thing I’ve always loved about her books is the epic music moments, and this one was no different. The song choices and the ones she wrote specifically for this story were absolutely perfect. I found myself replaying those moments in my head like a favorite song on repeat. 🎶

The found family in this story completely warmed my heart. It’s a reminder that fate works in the strangest ways. One moment life is going in one direction, and then one decision one moment can change everything.

This book also carried some heavy emotions, some that hit close to home for me. That’s what makes Jennifer Hartmann such an incredible author she handles difficult topics with so much care and authenticity.

Overall, this was a beautiful, emotional story that will stay with me for a long time. ❤️📖

I received this book as an ARC from the author for my honest review.

“We sit side by side, staring up at the honey moon as the remnants of our losses drift further out of reach beyond the night sky. We both shared a piece of ourselves tonight. The most broken piece. The dirtiest piece. And I guess that should make me feel worse somehow. Sadder. More burdened. But all I feel is less alone.”

Jennifer Hartmann made me feel an array of feelings throughout this book — some that complemented one another, and others that clashed. Only she could have such an impact with her words.

In the beginning, I struggled…mainly because I am not one for musical romances. Especially since this book emphasizes music as their ways of expression, their safe space, their creativity, the way they see life. Beautiful, but also was hard for me to resonate with since I do not have that same perspective. Except for her lyrics to “Night Song”. Those I read and felt so deeply, it was the first time I had not felt so detached from their musical language, but welcomed instead. I also am one for slow progressions, so to see the characters find safety in vulnerability with one another so quickly without much to earn was hard for me to appreciate. But again, these are just preferences of mine which is of no fault to Hartmann for not matching — it was still a beautiful and heart wrenching book that I was able to admire.

The progression and development of Chase and Annie’s relationship was frustrating, irritating, overwhelming — but also, poignant, cherishing, and resilient. Hartmann does a beautiful job depicting how unwarranted feelings of guilt can influence behaviors that fall into self-sacrificing. As much as I had empathized with these characters, held compassion for them — I couldn’t help but feel frustration too, seeing how they deserved more but held themselves back from getting it. How their self-sacrificing decisions were not only hurting themselves, but each other. I couldn’t not be upset, but realized this was the point. How trauma, guilt, shame can overwhelm and consume us, dictate our decisions and choices. How instead of just self-sacrificing, it can easily fall into self-punishing. And yet, they still couldn’t let go of each other, showing just how deep their connection was.

Nearing the end of the book, all that frustration and irritation I felt transformed into deep compassion, sadness, and longing for their happy ending. The feelings that were clashing within me began to comfort each other instead. The magic in Hartmann’s writing needs to be studied. How she can introduce something so tragic but structure it so beautifully.

An element I surprisingly enjoyed — Alex’s POV chapters. Weird, I know. But again, something that Hartmann can do so perfectly and with such justice, that it doesn’t feel out of place, or even unwanted. To allow us in a perspective of that character was a decision that was well made and appreciated. As much as he created much of my anger in this book, getting those two chapters from his perspective was something I didn’t know I would like or even be able to humanize. But I did. It was heartbreaking and tragic, and yet did not excuse or justify his actions. Which Hartmann accomplished that duplicity perfectly.

This book of pieces will forever live in a piece of my heart.

4.5⭐

A rockstar romance that genuinely made my chest ache. I couldn’t help but wish I could actually hear their voices. I was completely hooked.

Jennifer Hartmann writes so poetically; it’s beautiful, emotional, and immersive. Annalise’s journey especially stood out to me. She holds onto a relationship she knows doesn’t serve her, trying to remain loyal for reasons I won’t spoil, and watching her battle with herself really drew me in.

That said, I did feel conflicted with her growth. While she leaves Alex and chooses herself, which I appreciated, it felt like she jumped pretty quickly into something with Chase. I wanted more time where she was truly on her own, fully stepping into that independence first.

Regardless, the love and yearning with chase was HEAVY 😅 and I felt it deep in my bones…but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t frustrated.

Chase leaving really got under my skin. There was so much emphasis on always being there, always staying, and then he just leaves. I understand why he did it, but it felt extreme. And then the comparison he made, equating one rough intimate moment to her abusive ex, didn’t sit right and came off a bit immature.

The side characters were fun. Overall this was emotional, poetic, and gripping, even if it left me a little frustrated along the way.

Disclaimer: I am part of the Team Hartmann ARC team. Free ARC received from NetGalley. Honest review provided.

The Queen of the Slow Burn has done it again in this rockstar romance. But honestly, this book is so much more too. The element of found family is key throughout the story and so heartwarming. I absolutely adore Annalise and Chase throughout the whole book. They both have their own demons to overcome and one of those demons I sure wish had been out of the picture sooner 😅 but the story all falls into place, piece by piece. The beginning is a roller coaster and sucks you in the very first chapter. And it wouldn’t be a JH book without hilarious banter throughout.

A beautiful, heartwarming romance with a fun rockstar element about an indie band that suddenly makes it big time. The haikus and lyrics throughout the book are poignant and beautiful. And of course the perfectly curated playlist to complement the book. Jennifer is going to rip your heart out and stomp on a bit before making it all worth it. 5 stars.

I received an advance copy from NetGalley (HUGE thank you!)

I am a HUGE Jennifer Hartmann fan. Every time I get asked book recommendations, I ALWAYS recommend her books. She is without a doubt my favorite author. I love her writing and where she takes us through each story. The heartache. The trauma. Sewing your heart back together and making it whole again at the end. That said, this one was a different from her other books. While yes, we ventured through some of her well known themes, I just honestly got bored. It started off interesting…repetitive and then kinda lost me. It picked back up at the end when things started unfolding, tearing you a little but then sewing you back up. It just wasn’t like her other books that I’m used to from her, which is fine! I love different types of stories from authors, especially from her. Unfortunately, I’d say this one might be my least favorite which I’m so bummed to even write about. It had nothing to do with her beautiful writing. I just didn’t care for this story and was bored. Regardless, I can’t wait to read even more from her. If you like music romances, give it a shot.

Thank you Jennifer Hartmann for the ARC book!! I was so excited to read this and it did not disappoint. Another reminder why she's my favorite author. The writing in this was so poetic. This slow burn was done perfectly!! There was a trope in this that I usually don't care for but Jennifer did it right (no spoilers).

Annalise and Chase were beautiful together and OMG the spice!! HOT!! Of course it made me emotional like a true Jennifer Hartmann book!!

Title: Pieces of the Night
Author: Jennifer Hartmann

What to expect:
*Accidental kidnapping
*Musician couple
*Life changing disability

The second half of this book saved the story for me, I do not enjoy reading books where one of the main characters is in a relationship with another person.

This book begins with Annalise, 21 years old, in an abusive relationship and refuses to leave him because she caused him to have a car accident several years ago leaving him with a TBI.

Then she accidentally gets kidnapped by Chase, our MMC, who is down on his luck and gets caught up in a difficult situation.

The second half of the book was amazing, the lyrics that Jennifer Hartmann wrote for this book were magical! Loved how the band finally found their themselves and made a family together.

Safety:
FMC is in a relationship with OM for majority of the book, does include closed door intimate scene with OM. On page drug overdose. Third act separation.

Format: Edelweiss ebook
Genre: Contemporary, romance
Overall score:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice level:🌶️🌶️
POV’s: Annalise (FMC) Chase (MMC)

Thank you to NetGalley and Bloom Books for the ARC. The opinions are my own and do not reflect Indigo or their affiliates.
Not sure where to start with this one. Jennifer Hartmann is a beautiful writer so this book about music and lyrics was safe in her hands. The hiakus throughout the book are so poignant. I also loved the found family in this one. Found family is one of my favourite tropes and the band is a great one for Chase.
Unfortunately there are several things I just didn’t like that changed how the book hit for me. One of the big ones was the attitude towards gun violence. I think that’s something that is very American but all the justification for the gas station shooting just made me feel uncomfortable. Fear is the worst justification for shooting an innocent person accidentally. And the topic came up repeatedly throughout the book. I get what she was trying to do with the Singh family tie in but I just couldn’t swallow that part.
The other big issue was that I just don’t enjoy the romances where one character is in a relationship with someone else for half the book. There was just too much of Alex for me. Again I understand why but it impacted my enjoyment of the book.
Overall it’s a beautifully written and emotional love story. I’d recommend to anyone who loves music and angst. 3.5⭐️

“Because right now, she looks like something I could ruin myself for.”

Pieces of the Night, what did you do to me?!? It’s not often that a book steals my breath from beginning to end … slicing my heart open and searing my soul. To say that Pieces of the Night is emotionally stunning and superbly written isn’t even enough. It was more than I expected. This love story was my sun, storm, and stars, shining and shattering in the most beautifully broken way. Deep. Dynamic. Devastatingly beautiful.

A rock star romance meets story of survival, Pieces of the Night stars a broken musician and his singing muse. Fated together and forever while bound by love, lyrics, light, and life. Annalise and Chase’s journey and hard-fought love story moved me so much. She shows him his worth. He truly sees her. Both broken, but together, they make each other whole. I could feel their combustible connection and powerful love … magical together.

Humming with rich metaphors, vivid detail, emotional depth, meaningful wisdom, and lasting love, Pieces of the Night makes you think. Makes you bask in the moment. Makes you appreciate the little things. Makes you feel everything. I didn’t just feel Pieces of the Night; I lived it. I was transported to the stage where I could hear the music, experience the raw emotion, and breathe the intensity of the characters and their songs that felt so real.

Jennifer Hartmann writes the best love against the odds journeys, holding a masterclass in slow-burning love and soul. Her profound and powerful Pieces of the Night hit me straight in the feels. I smiled all the smiles. I cried all the tears. I felt all the emotions. I FELT EVERYTHING!

Rockstar romances have always held a special place in my music-loving heart, and Pieces of the Night is among the greats in its genre. I lived in this book. I fell head over heels in love with every word that’s brutally honest, beautifully broken, and brilliantly told. I couldn’t stop falling. Pieces of the Night is a sensational star that shines bright on the darkest of nights. Emotional. Extraordinary. Everlasting. Everything.

“Songs are kind of like people. Some people you just notice … Then you come across the kind of people who burrow deep …. They become ingrained. Even when the songs are over and those people leave, you still feel them. They just … stick.”

A top 2026 and favorite lifetime romance!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ but worth all the honey moons in the universe

I really loved Hartmann's recent release Dream On, so I thought that I would feel similarly about Pieces of the Night. I was wrong.

The main characters are 21ish years old, and that's fine. I don't have a problem with their ages but it felt like every piece of dialogue was straight out of a Hallmark movie. No young adult speaks in Live Laugh Love inspirational quotes. It pulled me out of the story every time it happened until I just couldn't it anymore.

The premise is basically boy and girl have super absurd meet-cute and it causes girl to realize she doesn't want to date gaslighty crappy other boy anymore. The story is fine in this aspect, I get it, sometimes you don't realize exactly how bad your relationship is until you meet someone else and feel the difference. But with the boyfriend - he has no redeeming qualities and it just doesn't really make too much sense why she'd deal with him (some of it is explained via a TBI that occured prior to the beginning of the story but it feels like a weak reason).

I think the beginning of the end for me was when these two 21ish year olds discovered that Hallelujah is one of their favorite songs. Like...what. They then decide that it's a great idea to sing it during drunk karaoke at a bar and Annalise's inner monologue is wildly out of touch. "They come here to feel something like this" No actually they came here to hear drunk people sing Britney Spears songs.

Annalise is also Not Like Other Girls (which is an issue I have with a lot of the authors FMCs) and she just can't contain herself when it comes to writing haikus (yes, haikus) and shes just so different because she has purple streaks in her hair. Not Like Other Girls is probably one of my biggest peeves in books so I have little patience for it.

If you don't have any general issues with the author's writing style or think that her FMCs are Pick Mes then ignore this - you'll probably enjoy the book at least a little.

Unfortunately, I think this is the nail in the coffin for me and Jennifer Hartmann.

Oh my goodness; the tears 😭
JH just knows how to break me in every way possible; I knew it was coming - just didn’t know it would hurt this much.
Pieces of the Night is up there with my favourite JH books, it’s heartbreakingly beautiful 💜

🎸 Rockstar Romance
🎸 Forbidden
🎸 Slow Burn
🎸 He Falls First
🎸 Love Triangle

“And I would still choose this every time. Every day. In every lifetime.”

😭😭😭😭😭

Chase meets Annalise in the most Jennifer Hartmann way; and their bond was instant. Spoiler alert 🚨 Annalise has a boyfriend, Alex - he’s emotionally abusive and their relationship is toxic. Annalise has spent their relationship isolated and only doing what makes Alex happy; giving up on her own dreams 🥺

Sharing a love of music Chase and Annalise’s story is full of love and fate - proving that everything happens for a reason 💜

“You’re the music! You. Only You” 🎵

The songs in this book bring so much more meaning to the story; and oh my goodness - THE LYRICS! Jennifer Hartmann; who are you 😭😍😍 The character depth in this book is also phenomenal; I had my heart in my throat from the very first chapter. The angst, the yearning and the brokenness; I just can’t!! The flipping LOVE 🥺🥺
Pieces of the Night had me absolutely sobbing (hyperventilating even); JH deserves a 👑

It’s books like these that make me love reading 📚
Thank you so much for the ARC; easy 5 stars!

This book is A Love Letter to Whiskey meets Drive… and I’m absolutely HERE FOR IT! 🔥

I really loved how Jennifer Hartmann explored the mental side of abuse; the quieter, more “silent” kind that often leaves deeper internal bruises and scars than physical abuse ever could. As an outsider, the destruction feels so obvious, yet for the person living it, the internal guilt and emotional struggle feel painfully real.

The way the story weaves together newfound love, heartbreak, and lingering emotional pain completely wrecked me. And that ending… (thanks a lot, Ms. Hartmann 😭). My heart was left in shambles, only to be slowly, carefully pieced back together.

My only criticism was centered around how they met. It just didn’t quite click in my head and almost felt like it belonged in a completely different book. BUT… everything outside of that was chef’s kiss. 🤌✨

I absolutely cannot wait until my physical copy hits my doorstep!

"We are not written in the stars. We are the stars."

Pieces of the Night is a beautifully written contemporary adult romance. Jennifer Hartman has written a poetic, emotional, slow-burn story. She will pull you through, chapter after chapter bringing out all of the "feels." At times you will find yourself laughing and then crying. You will be at the edge if your seat asking "why!!!"

I fell in love with Annalise. Her compassion, her loyalty, her free spirit and her open heart. She is gentle and beautiful. Chase starts out as a mystery that unwinds before your eyes. There are so many other characters that play a significant part. The story builds and builds and them BAM! I loved how so many things come full circle.

Jennifer Hartman is known for writing dark and gritty romance stories. Many are filled with dark and strange twists and turns. Pieces of the Night is absolutely a new version of Jennifer's writing. I was consumed by the beautiful writing and intense storyline. Love, loss, hope, fear, forgiveness and second chances filled the pages.

4.5 stars

First of all what an honor it is to be on the ARC team of one of my favorite authors. Jennifer Hartmann can do no wrong!! I’ve read all her books, some multiple times, and she is just such a phenomenal author I knew I’d love this. The poetry, the midnights, the sibling dynamic, the edge of my seat feeling??? TOP TIER!! From page 1 I was hooked, and the accidental kidnapping/car jacking was very well done. I loved the haikus too. Also the Brave Little Toaster nod was so good, I grew up watching that movie!! I will say- I hated Alex with such a passion and I was getting mad that Annalise kept going back and taking the abuse but I had to remember she’s 21 years old so I guess that wasn’t too surprising. Tying the whole story together with Parvati was just *chef’s kiss* somehow Jennifer always knows how to destroy you and then put the pieces back together!

It is always such a treat getting to read a new release by Jennifer. Pieces of the Night was no different. I completely devoured this book and did not want to put it down. Forbidden rockstar romance? Sold. But make that from the angst Queen herself and I knew I was in for the best but also most painful time.

While this was not a dark romance and leaned into the more contemporary side, there are some heavy topics depicted and explored throughout this story. I appreciated the way in which Jennfier navigated them and showed the reality of being in an emotionally abusive relationship where there is an unhealthy attachment as well as the struggles musicians face being in the spotlight.

The build-up to Annie and Chase's romance was done so well. These two really got to know each other before anything transpired between them. Because of that, it felt so much more honest, real and deep. I believe these two knew each other inside and out before it ever became physical and I appreciated that because you could tell they just wanted the best for one another.

Annalise, the FMC, is just the sweetest and most selfless person. She is in a tough situation in life and her relationship. I had a lot of empathy and understanding for her as someone who has experienced some of the same struggles she had. I enjoyed watching her grow and learn to put herself first and do what makes her happy and not let anyone bring her down or try to get in the way of that.

And then there's the MMC, Chase, who is just incredibly swoony. He is that subtle "knight in shining armor" without even trying to be. I loved how compassionate he was for Annie and his persistence to never give up on her even when it was quite difficult. I believe he had the best intentions and was as much of a gentleman as anyone would expect him to be in that particular situation. He also had his own demons that I enjoyed getting to learn about and despite the issues he faced, he was constantly putting others first, most importantly Annie.

Annie and Chase were just the perfect balance for each other. I think they both helped each other grow and determine what they both want in life. I also appreciated the support and admiration they had for one another. It was inspirational. The chemistry between these two was palpable and it was very entertaining to watch it unfold. I genuinely loved every moment between these two and their love for each other felt right despite all the odds set against them.

I can't not mention Kenna and Tag. Kenna is Annie's best friend and Tag is Annie's brother. I loved the role they both played in this story. It wouldn't have been the same without them.

This story is not an easy one but it sure is worth it. I knew Jennifer would put me through all of the emotions but man this one hurt. I had to hold back tears several times. Annie and Chase's love story was a perfect example of how love will persist through all odds. The music was magical, but the romance was even more so, and the found family was just the cherry on top.

Thank you so much Jennifer for the ARC.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am an obsessive fangirl for Jennifer Hartmann. She can do no wrong in my book. Everyone says she's the Queen of Angst and her novels tear you apart, wreck your soul, and somehow, gah, somehow heal you. "Pieces of the Night" is no different. She has the reputation for a reason. I was anxious to read it becuase I know exactly what to expect from her books. This just completely stole my heart. This wasn’t just a romance; it was a deeply emotional story about broken people finding healing, courage, and purpose through music and through each other. I was definitely pulled into Annalise and Chase’s world, and by 30% in, I was already wrecked. By the end, I was heartbroken that it was over.

Hartmann has such a gift for writing characters who feel painfully real. Annalise is a people pleaser who carries so much guilt and obligation that she’s almost forgotten how to dream for herself, while Chase is this beautifully complicated soul who believes he’s destined to ruin everything he touches. When their lives collide, their connection feels instant. Watching them slowly open up, write music together in secret, and build something magical out of their shared pain was absolutely beautiful.

The music element in this book made the story even more powerful. Every scene involving songwriting or performing felt intense. Their songs become a languagebetween them that says everything they’re too afraid to admit to each other. It made their relationship feel raw and intimate. I also loved how Jennifer obviously used her relationship with her husband to write this. He helped her with the band/guitar references. The song he wrote...Gawd.

What I loved most was how layered the story is. Yes, it’s a love story, but it’s also about forgiveness, finding your self worth, and digging to find the courage to chase the life you truly want. The emotional tension, the slow burn between Chase and Annalise, the found family moments with the band… it all came together so beautifully.

Like I said, Jennifer Hartmann has a way of breaking your heart and healing it at the same time, and Pieces of the Night is a perfect example of that magic. It’s tender, heartbreaking, hopeful, and unforgettable. I'm in love with this story.

I could not recommend this book enough. If you aren't reading her masterpieces, you're truly, definitely missing out.
