How He Got the Girl

Rate this book
A fake dating contract with the man who took me on the best date of my life and then ghosted me…what could possibly go wrong?

I’ve spent the past three years trying to forget Griffin Reynolds. But that’s become impossible to do when his infuriatingly handsome face starts popping up everywhere.

After a coffee shop mishap, I find myself in the arms of Hollywood’s hottest new actor. Now, my face is next to his on every tabloid, and his agent suggests a fake relationship to keep the publicity going since he’s up for his dream movie role.

I’d love nothing more than to tell Griffin where he can shove his money. But I’d be a fool to refuse the salary he’s offering me to post a few pictures on social media. It doesn’t give me back the last few years of my life, but at least he’ll be paying me back in some way for the damage he did when he disappeared without a trace.

I do my best to maintain my stone-cold demeanor on our dates. But Griffin must be as great of an actor as everyone makes him out to be with his love-sick looks and lingering touches.

At least, that’s what I have to believe. Because the alternative is that Griffin has real feelings for me…and I refuse to let him hurt me a second time.

How He Got the Girl is a fake dating, celebrity romcom with sizzling chemistry but no explicit content. It’s the second book in the Sweeter Than Fiction series, following four best friends finding love.

ARC REVIEW:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

With the holidays approaching, Amanda Schimmoeller’s How He Got The Girl is the IDEAL read for the romance reader and Taylor Swift fan in your life!!!

Sparks flew the minute Mallory Porter and Griffin Reynolds laid eyes on each other. After their initial hot chocolate date turned into an all day event, Mallory assumed things were heading in the direction of a relationship. But when Griffin failed to contact her, she was left heartbroken and wondering why. Three years later the pair are reunited by yet another chance encounter. Will this be their second shot at love, or will it end in another ghosting?

How He Got The Girl is the second book in Amanda Schimmoeller’s Sweeter Than Fiction Series. This series is a love letter to female friendships and her favorite singer/ songwriter, Taylor Swift. Readers are in for a wild ride as they follow four, twenty-somethings navigate adulthood and love.

After falling in love with the Long Live Girlies back in book one, I knew I had to continue with this series. I am happy to report that Schimmoeller not only met, but exceeded my expectations with book two. She somehow managed to crack the code for penning the perfect romcom in 2025.

This book has everything an avid romance reader could ever want or need; holiday cheer, an adorable meet cute, witty banter, and palpable chemistry. Trust me, this is a five-star, must read book. I plan on rereading this annually around the holiday season, it is seriously that good!!!

Special thanks to Amanda Schimmoeller and ABS Publishing LLC for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is genuinely one of the sweetest cutest swooniest books ever!
I absolutely loved Mallory’s friend group, they were sweet and so supportive.
And don’t even get me started on Griffin🫠🥹
That man made me giggle so many times😆
The way he cares for Mallory and make sure she’s okay with the whole fake dating thing was just so sweet and thoughtful!
Also, the way he put her first in everything🥰
Their meet-cute was probably one of my favorite meet-cutes ever!
Mallory was also so sweet and sassy, just perfect for Griffin🤭
And the proposal made me tear up🥹 they’re just so precious💖
I really really loved this book! I cannot wait for the next one🤭

If I thought she tilted my world off-kilter before, it's off its freaking axis now, rolling full speed down Mt. Everest.
I don't think there's anything else in the world that can compare to this feeling. Anyone else who could compare to her.

────୨ৎ──── ────୨ৎ──── ────୨ৎ────

"Good thing I have time to change your mind."
"Don't you remember that I'm stubborn?"
I smile. "It's one of the things I like most about you."
Mallory shakes her head. "What am I going to do with you, Griff?"
Hearing her use my preferred nickname has me feeling a thrill of hope. "Oh, I don't know. Keep me forever?"

And I feel everything. Everything for him that I had shoved down and tried to forget after I never heard from him again. The fire I used to feel inside for him stoked back to life from the embers that remained, holding onto hope that he was exactly who I thought after we first met. A man worth holding onto. A man worth the risk, worth burning for.

4.5 stars!

This story was adorable! And I loved it! Griffin is an actor and Mallory is a teacher. They met 3 years ago and had an amazing date but after she thought he ghosted her, and he actually lost her number. 3 years later they literally run into each other and someone snaps a pic and suddenly it’s time for some fake dating. But it’s tough given their past. I really loved Griffin and Mallory. They are a great couple. There was a little bit too much physical touch for me personally but since this story is labeled closed door it definitely fits in that mold and my rating reflects the label. I also loved how the author has the characters jobs and life outside the relationship be realistic. And I loved Mallory and her friends text conversations. Overall, a very cute story!

Sweeter than Fiction series book 2
Release date 10/9

Mallory and Griffin meet in the funniest way! They share an amazing connection she gives him her number and then they part ways. The problem? She never hears from him. Now she’s running into him 3 years later and she is not happy to see the now famous actor. She’s spent the last 3 years trying to forget him. Griffin on the other hand has been trying to find her 🥹 I love how he calls her beautiful all the time! The nicknames are so adorable.

This cozy fake dating romance is funny, sweet, and has all the banter.
This series follows 4 best friends finding love.

✨ I see many of the same emotions mirrored in his eyes before they glint with boldness as he says, “To never settle for less than what I feel for you.”

This was adorable! Exactly what I needed for a December/Christmas read.

The moment I saw everything was perfect in chapter 3, I knew the worst was coming in the next chapters.

Griffin is the sweetest ever, and Mallory is a great main character. Their dynamic was great to read, and I loved their development.

I loved the Taylor Swift references throughout the book (even the subtle ones, like writing “mine” on the upper thigh). I loved it.

“𝙄 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙄’𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙄 𝙢𝙚𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪.”

This might just be the cutest contemporary romance com I've ever read! I loved so much about it, especially the characters. I absolutely loved how Griffin slowly won Mallory over again. He never stopped loving her, and never gave up on her.

As strange as it sounds, I even really liked how stubborn Mallory was to let Griffin back in. It showed true character, and that she really cared about life and strong relationships.

Everything about book 1 & 2 have been just so delightful and makes me want more!! I can't wait for Shayna and Alyssa's story's next! 🩷

Y’all know I’m down bad for a man down bad and Griffin fit that marker to a T. I loved his dedication and sense of self and was a genuinely good human. I loved the banter and all of the winter activities. The TS references are fun to catch throughout too.

I love good family dynamics and strong friendships and this book brought those out in full force. I love the support and the care. It sings to my soul every dang time.

A beautiful romance with true communication and making the hard things work because they are worth working for. Definitely a book to pick up y’all!!

3 ⭐️

Summary:
3 years after a life changing date ends in "ghosting", Mallory Porter and newly famous Griffin Reynolds are thrown back together when their reunion sparks dating rumors.

Review
Characters: 3 ⭐️
I'll be honest, I wasn't impressed by these characters. I thought Griffin was a very sweet, cute, & swoony (and maybe even a little cringey) MMC, but in the end I just wasn't attached to him. For Mallory, she was okay, but I wasn't very interested in her character. I had a hard time understanding some of her actions and anger. She just didn't work for me as an FMC. I also thought the side characters were cute but also could be a little cringey. The characters in this story were fine, but they didn't make an impact on me.

Romance: 3 ⭐️
This aspect was the same as the characters themselves, just okay. I just didn't care about them as a couple and didn't necessarily feel that they were good together. Griffin was sweet enough, but Mallory was so frustrating and borderline annoying at times. I thought she went overboard with her anger towards Griffin, especially after he gave her an explanation. Getting hung up on one interview felt overdramatic to me. Don't even get me started on the hot chocolate thing. Frankly, I thought it was silly. I think a lot of this could've been saved if there was more about her relationship background in detail, maybe even a bad ex that shows up, but because that was missing, I didn't fully understand her point of view. In the end, I think the romance could've been better, but it wasn't the worst one I have ever read.

Storyline: 3 ⭐️
The storyline was very promising, but I wasn't impressed by the execution. I thought the overall idea was very good and even started out fine, but unfortunately, I got bored and struggled to even finish it.

Writing/Pacing: 3 ⭐️
The writing style was good and easy enough to read. I felt like some details weren't as explored as they should've been such as Mallory's ice skating and romantic past. Truthfully, the writing of this book made me feel like the potential other couples in the series had better writing than Mallory and Griffin. Also, too many Taylor Swift references for me, but that's mostly my own fault, I didn't catch the reference in the title. The only reason I mention this at all is if someone reading this review, like me, didn't catch the reference, and is not interested in picking up a book with this detail due to the oversaturation of it in romance books. Ultimately, the writing and pacing was fine, it just didn't keep my interest.

Overall: 3 ⭐️
Contrary to me stating a lot of negative things, I wouldn't necessarily call this a bad book. I think whether you like it or not is more about your specific taste than anything being objectively bad. I am not opposed to trying this author or even this series again in the future. It was a cute enough holiday read; it just wasn't my favorite.

Would I recommend this book? Maybe. It's worth a try if the plot interests you.

So cite! How He Got the Girl is the cute story of Griffin & Mallory who meet when Griffin accidentally splashes Mallory‘s hot chocolate all over her while she is out Christmas caroling. These two have the most perfect date ever, and then Mallory doesn’t hear from him again! As hard as she tries to forget Griffin, the memory of him continues to linger. Now, three years later, they have another “run in” (literally) but Mallory is having a hard time forgiving the past, especially now that Griffin is a famous actor! So, when these two need to start fake dating to help with Griffin’’s career, Mallory wants some firm rules in place. But, we all know rules were made to be broken…

Oh my gosh, this book was so adorable! I loved Mallory and Griffin and their relationship! I loved their instant connection in the beginning, and how hard Griffin worked to try and when her back when he gets a second chance! He was literally the sweetest!! I loved how crazy he was about Mallory and that he would do pretty much anything to make her happy! Mallory was a little on the stubborn side, and I can’t say that I blame her after getting her heart broken! So, I was so happy to see, with time, Griffin’s efforts pay off with her forgiving him and falling for him all over again!

Favorite quotes:

“His smirk is downright criminal—straight to jail for his ability to make women swoon.”

“I want to make her happy. Being the reason this woman wears a smile on her face is my new favorite thing.”

“The way he’s looking at me makes me feel like he can see right into my soul. It’s as if he’s searching for the answer to who I am—like he wants to uncover everything there is to know about me.”

“My heart is melting. And my heart doesn’t melt. But this man… he’s something else. The more I learn about him, the more I like who he is.”

“He looks at you like you’re the only girl he sees, Mal. I’d give anything for a man to look at me like that.”

Omg this was so so good!
Amanda Schimmoeller has such a fantastic way of drawing you in and making you feel so deeply about her characters and so invested in their happiness that even though you don’t want it to end you feel so satisfied and happy with everything you can’t help but sigh in happiness.

I’m not going to lie, second chance romance is usually my least favourite trope. There are only a few times I’ve really enjoyed a second chance romance and this one now tops that list. I really appreciated that the author started the story with their background, you fall in love with them falling for each other and we’re totally invested in what’s going to happen to Mallory and Griffin. Then we’re hit with a totally realistic reason why they aren’t together and why it’s going to be an obstacle for them to work through it. Throw in the incredible banter and chemistry that these two have and a forced fake dating scenario and we have a recipe for a perfect rom-com.
We also get to spend more time with her best friends and roommates (love seeing Kelsey and Tyler so happy still ) whom this series is based around and a bit of setup for book 3 which I am eagerly anticipating!

Thank you so much to the author for an advance review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

So hi, I've got your next perfect wintery vibes rom com. If you want to read a book that has one of the funniest, banter filled meet-cutes, sizzling chemistry, tension that jumps out of the book, kisses that will literally make you squeal, and a group of ride or die girlfriends — PICK UP THIS BOOK. It is no secret that I adore Amanda's writing. She knows how to write banter, comedy & swoon really well, and she knocked it out of the park again with this one.

Griffin. Oh Griffin. He YEARNS for Mallory. Like oh my goodness, he's a yearner and i ate up every single second of it. Mallory on the other hand wants NOTHING to do with Griffin after she felt like he ghosted her three years prior after an incredible date. But fate steps in and they have to fake date...but somewhere along the way the lines become blurred and Mallory starts to see Griffin in a different light.

I loved how Griffin never gave up on Mallory. He knew she was the one for him, and he wasn't about to let her get away a second time. He put up with the snark & the sass, and often gave it right back but in a much flirtier way. 😉 He was willing to give up things for her, and he made it known he would literally bend over backwards for her. I'm telling you, he's a new top tier book boyfriend.

Thank you to Amanda for letting me read an early copy of this! I can't wait for the rest of the series. ❤️

This book is the cozy, fake dating romance of my dreams 🥹 thank you Amanda for the opportunity to be on your ARC team!

How He Got the Girl is a gorgeous second chance romance that stole my heart. Schimmoeller’s writing is beautiful and lyrical. She writes characters with such depth and heart. Mallory and Griffin have such a hilarious meet disaster, and their first date seems like something out of a movie. Fast forward to a few years later - after thinking that Griffin ghosted her, Mallory runs into him (literally) in a coffee shop, which sets off a silly and sweet chain of events. Griffin is SO lovely, and my heart ached while watching how he treated Mallory with consistent love and respect.

I loved all of the pop culture references, especially the rom coms that Griffin and Mallory quoted to each other in the middle of their banter. And Griffin’s secret tattoo 🥹 “I got it as a reminder that sparks and all the things I thought were only in the movies truly do exist.” MY HEART.

I had the biggest smile on my face the entire time I read How He Got the Girl by Amanda Schimmoeller. I don't feel like I've read many books where the male is a huge sunshine character and actively pursues the female love interest, but this book had that. It did seem a little insta love like, especially with the MMC doing some things that I thought were a little strange to do after only going on one date, but it was still a super cute book overall. If you like books with only kisses, have an enemies to lovers vibe (at least on one end), fake dating, famous characters, and an amazing friend group, then definitely check this one out.

I received an eARC from the author, which does not impact my review.

This story was delightful. It drew me in and kept me interested the whole story (I’m not a fan of too much blah blah blah). They both fell so fast and hard but Griff puts a new depth to it. He is so sweet and gone-zo for Mallory! This is a great read! Definitely recommend it. 🚫🤬🚫🌶️

This was such a swoon-worthy and fun mash-up of second chance, fake dating, and celebrity romance! I loved their meet-cute so much and the way they met and the reason they stayed apart was unique and made their accidental reuniting absolutely tug at my heartstrings. I loved seeing Griffin work to win Mallory back and seeing Mallory heal. Also, I adored his granny and I loved seeing more of this great friend group. I can’t wait for the next book!

In Book 2 of the Sweeter than Fiction series, Mallory, an elementary school teacher, has an amazing first date with wannabe-actor Griffin. After accidentally losing her number, she thinks she’s been ghosted. Now a romcom star in the latest box office hit, Griffin, who’s never quite gotten over Mallory, (literally) runs into Mallory at a coffee shop in her hometown, causing a viral moment for the two. In order to keep his movie in the public eye, Griffin convinces Mallory to enter into a fake-dating contract, ultimately trying to win back his girl who got away.

This story is a sweet, Hallmark movie-esque romcom. There are popular movie quotes and Taylor Swift references woven throughout, which were fun to pick out. It has a tight-knit group of friends who are more like family to one another, and I appreciated that they support each other, cheering one another on & sharing truth when necessary. Griffin was a sweet MMC, and his romantic gestures and sincerity were adorable to read. There’s a definite cozy vibe that’s felt in the activities the main characters participate in, which is a great for a holiday read.

I felt that the book tried to pack a lot of tropes into the storyline, and while some worked well, others felt a little forced/not needed to move the plot forward. I think that the insta-love aspect of the book wasn’t my cup of tea, so the feelings the characters had from just two interactions, albeit one being a long date, were quite deep. This is a preference thing, and that trope/plot piece may read better other readers.

If you’re looking for a quick, cozy, holiday read with an insta-love/celebrity romance, this will fit that super well!

This is a clean, closed-door romcom with kisses only.

Thanks for the ARC, Amanda!! No positive review was required. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Absolutely ADORABLE!!!

Mallory has spent years trying to forget Griffin Reynolds, but a chance run-in with the now-famous actor pulls her right back into his life. When his agent suggests a fake relationship for publicity, Mallory agrees, but only for the paycheck, not for the man who once ghosted her.

Griffin’s lingering touches and flirtatious charm make it harder for Mallory to tell what’s real and what's fake but she refuses to fall for him again and let him break her heart twice.

What you'll love:
Second chance at first love
Dual pov
Soulmates
Celebrity romance
Winning her back
Hot chocolate
Dress shopping
He falls first and he falls harder!
winter/Christmas vibes
Charming MMC
Photoshoot
All the kisses!
Granny

I cannot handle the adorableness of this romcom!! There’s so much to fangirl over, I don’t even know where to start (no spoilers, promise!), but just know I loved every single page.

This book had all my favorite tropes: second chance romance, fake dating, and a swoony celebrity hero. Griffin is absolutely determined to win Mallory back, and honestly, is there anything more attractive than a man who knows how to fight for the woman he loves? I don’t think so. Mallory was so relatable, and I was completely on her side but then watching her slowly let her guard down again gave me all the feels. (Sigh!)

There were so many sweet, emotional, swoon-worthy moments (THAT KISS!!!), but I also loved the laugh-out-loud ones. This book definitely gave me all the feels! The chemistry, the pining, the angst, the longing, and that hard-earned happily ever after? Perfection.

Griffin and Mallory have officially taken up permanent residence in my heart and I’ll be shipping them forever!

If you love cozy Christmas vibes, swoony celebrities, and soulmates who find their way back to each other, then you absolutely need this book on your TBR! I will definitely be reading - and loving -it all over again this holiday season!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

This book is a 4.75⭐️ for me!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I've officially read all seven of Amanda's books now, and I'll keep picking up everything she writes. He Got the Girl is the second book in her current romance series, and it's perfect for anyone who loves a sweet, closed-door rom-com with no spice or language. It also works great if you enjoy connected standalones. I definitely recommend reading them all in order so you can fully appreciate the friend group and little connections throughout.

This story includes several tropes I really enjoy-like second-chance romance and fake dating-plus a fun dynamic between a celebrity actor and a teacher that I don't think I've ever read before. Griffin and Mallory completely won me over. Griffin is so down bad for her—if you love a man who yearns, you'll love him. He's patient, understanding, and genuinely cares about Mallory. And Mallory's growth throughout the book was great to see. I appreciated how she communicated her fears and hesitations, and how they both took the time to actually talk things through. It made their relationship feel realistic and grounded while still giving all the swoony moments.

Their banter was fantastic-they definitely knew how to give it right back to each other! And since this one has a wintry, Christmas setting, it's the perfect seasonal read. I loved all the cozy, festive moments with friends mixed in with the romance.

If you're a Swiftie, you'll love the fun Taylor Swift references scattered throughout the series-but even if you're not (like me!), there's not so many that it feels overwhelming.

Overall, He Got the Girl is such a heartwarming, fun, and clean rom-com that I'd recommend to anyone who loves connected friend groups, sweet romance, and a hero who falls first (and hard).

Griffin and Mallory meet under unusual circumstances involving hot cocoa, mittens, caroling, and money; it seems as though they would make a terrific couple. Griffin is considerate, attentive, and interested in learning as much as he can about Mallory. Mallory is a person who tells things as she sees them and really challenges Griffin to put everything he has into going for his acting career. So, what went wrong? Mallory never hears from Griffin again until they meet by chance three years later.

Griffin has never stopped thinking of Mallory, but he has a whole lot to prove about how much he cares for her after all this time. He doesn’t give up on showing he is committed to their relationship, even when Mallory is resistant to seeing what possibility there could be for their future.

Things to look forward to:
hot chocolate drinks
celebrity romance
second (and more) chances
Griffin’s grandma
nicknames
photo ops
ice skating
sleigh ride

This is the second book in the Sweeter Than Fiction series, but it can be read as a standalone. Readers will enjoy this romantic comedy and seeing how being patient in loving someone makes it all worthwhile.

I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions in this review are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.

Ah! The chemistry between Griffin and Mallory in How He Got the Girl is as steamy as the hot chocolate he accidentally spills on her at their first meeting. Their chemistry is just so great but when I say steamy, I just mean you can feel the chemistry between Mallory and Griffin. But there's no "steam" in terms of spice. This remains a closed door romance with nothing past kisses. There were also so many funny moments that had me laughing to myself. I really enjoyed the fake dating aspect of the story because you just know those fake dating agreements never stay that way and it's so fun to watch the fake moments morph into not so fake moments.

I love how Mallory is the one to make a big heartfelt speech. I feel like these normally come from the man's perspective and she wasn't afraid to just lay it all out there! I was so proud of her. What a character journey she has. She definitely felt really betrayed after Griffin agreed to call her following an amazing date but then she hadn't heard from him three years until they randomly ran into each other yet again. I love the golden retriever, cinnamon roll energy that Griffin gives off to explain what really happened and how he really wants a second chance. I'm enjoying this series by Amanda Schimmoeller and while I enjoyed I Knew He Was Trouble (yes check that one out too!), I liked this book even more!

“Yesterday, I was just an elementary school teacher who was excited for winter break to begin, but today, apparently, I’m Hollywood’s newest homewrecker.”

The Sweeter Than Fiction series is the absolute swooniest. This series is about a group of four life-long friends with romances guaranteed to each of them and it’s Mallory’s turn. Her fated meet-cute with Griffin splatters like hot chocolate–literally–and his head-over-heels, he falls first pursuit of her completely melted me. I loved the pop culture references, as well as all of the holiday events.

Every woman with a heartbeat will be hopelessly in love with Griffin after reading this darling holiday book. Schimmoeller has a way of writing that captures the heart and captivates the imagination, and I couldn’t get enough.

A closed door, second chance romance between a popular actor and an every-day teacher warmed my heart like cinnamon, and I’ll never say no to those tropes. It was every connection, stolen glance, and electric touch that bound me to this fake relationship. The kisses? Hot and sweet with a faint tinge of spice. I was sold, smitten, and swept off my feet, and I can’t wait for more.

Content: mild romance
