The beautiful night sky looks almost violet, littered with a million twinkling stars. The dark clouds rolling above are painted with splashes of gray and white as they pass in front of the two moons. Matthew Blue and his sister Samantha have been on this strange planet for almost a week and a half, with their only company being their next-door neighbor Yoseph and a few other... interesting characters. As of now, they all sit around the crackling orange campfire, eating fish and talking. They are about to start a quest - one that involves placing all of their bets on just a fleeting dream. They expect an adventure, but nothing close to what's actually in store for them. They will be tested mentally, physically, and spiritually. They will have fun times, but they will also face many challenges. There will even be betrayal. And the fate of Earth itself rests in their hands.
Could really feel the youthful, adventurous spirit when reading this. Very impressive from a young author. Only thing I’d note is that there were a lot of characters and it was hard to keep track
Crescent of Darkness is, at its core, a super exciting adventure! The twists, the epic battles, astounding magic, and fun characters all make it a compelling read. It’s definitely a page-turner!
The book starts out with three kids from Earth; Matthew, Samantha, and Yoseph. They are, following Earth’s demise, thrust into an adventure in new and alien worlds. Each destination they go to is unique and fleshed out. All of the different places give Crescent of Darkness a cool, sci-fi level of adventure. They constantly run into new friends and allies throughout the book. Each person has their own unique weapon and skillset, which range from a machete made from ice to the power to wield sunlight. There’s a whole lot of options for your favorite character. Mine is Kabel, who I guarantee you’re gonna like…
The battles are exciting, and the consequences are intense. Every fight and event all leads up to an epic conclusion, one which’ll leave you waiting anxiously for the next book. I’d liken this book to Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series for its tone and level of fun. Overall, I’d highly recommend you read it!
I think the biggest strength/weakness of the book is the cast of characters. I love growth and each one adding their own flavour to the pot, especially how they all interact differently in the “cypher.” This is where they shine the most.
Other dope moment was Sam and Matt randomly finding Bacoj at the stadium and being like gimme back my console! Haha great character intro!
But the downside can be keeping track of it all. Numerous times, I was like wait who is Kabel? Who is Chirus? I think one of them is Ilone’s cousin? Maybe I need to improve my attention span (definitely actually) but it’s hard to keep track of them, let alone their powers.
I think it’d be useful to have a brief bio of everyone on the website. Like history, faction and personality. Also identify them in the cover. All in all, I’m glad to pick up a fiction book after pretty much a decade lol. Mad impressive work from my man!
A wholesome adventure with a variety of characters in an unknown world that’ll leave you wanting more. With the Earth on the line, our protagonists must venture out, meeting new friends and facing many challenges to fulfill a prophecy to save their home.
Felt there was a lot of convenience for the characters (i.e. able to convince members to join their party, are just happen to find the right item) but I felt that was due to the age rating. Could up the challenge level for the characters a bit more though.
But It was a fun read because it was a world I have yet to visit. The different cultures and people, bring out that a bit more too. All in all, a perfect read that anyone who loves fantasy can enjoy.
