Covenant of Beasts: An Indie Author Collective Anthology

Rate this book
In Covenant of Beasts, the line between man and monster blurs beneath moonlight and metaphor. These stories exxplore creatures that shift at night, and those that wear their beast within. From primal hunger to fractured identity, each tale unearths the darkness we hide, the instincts we fear, and the power that comes from embracing both.

Some beasts are born. Others are made. All of them are waiting.

This is an ARC review with a little bit for each story in this awesome anthology. It was a creepy, terrifying, and massively fun read. I would recommend it to anyone who likes the horror/thriller genre. Read this with the lights on!

Navigator, Author: Brooke Eisen
This story starts the anthology off with a bang. The imagery in Navigator is nothing short of stunning. I couldn’t help but fall for Seraphina, her stoic demeanor, the mystery that surrounds her. Written with a tone that is both incredibly creepy and alluring, this short story of the sea and songs provokes intrigue and keeps that energy to the very end.

Pixie Dust, Author: Denise Ernst
WE ALL JUST WANNA BE BIG ROCKSTARS… well, maybe not these ones, it gets dark. The suspense in this story is masterful, a perfect example of building and building until POP! It can be hard sometimes to find writing in which the big lead up isn’t a bore. This does NOT have that problem. Every moment gained an additional measure of intensity. And the spice? Oh, it’s spicy. On a final note (without giving away spoilers), do… do I think Micah is hot? I might need to think about my life after this story.

Dance of the Deer Goddess, Author: Ellen Winter
The first paragraph had me hooked. Winter knows how to make a reader feel like they are in it. This one keeps you on your toes, wondering what will come next. There is an element of extreme creepiness, despite the free-spirited and tight knit community of women the Selena stumbles upon. Though I have to say, there is a stargazing scene that did something to my heart. I swear, Winter made me feel like I too was lost in the stars. Yes, there were absolutely terrifying moments, but that beautiful moment of calm before the storm got to me.

Friend-Shaped, Author: Grace Vice
The wolf woman of Mobile Alabama is not a cryptid often seen in stories. We all have heard about bigfoot, el chupacabra, but this one is definitely an odd and seldom discussed gem. It’s weird, it’s unique, and it’ll have you wondering how the heck the story will end. Also, who doesn’t love the “who is the real monster,” trope?

The Savage Within, Author: Kisa Raven
I started reading this at night. Just me and a little light next to my desk. Big mistake. Within the first few pages, the big lights were turned on. Nope! This is going to get scary, and boy did it.
“He felt something move beneath his skin. Not a metaphor. Not madness. Real movement.” Stop scaring me, Raven! But what’s on the next page? Let it be known, readers, this is a dark one!

Goodnight, Author: Kestrel Martin
Thanks, I hated it. Okay, I loved it, but why did Martin have to break my heart! As part of the trigger warnings state, this does not have a happy ending. I wish this wasn’t so well written. I wish the author didn’t make me want to wrap the main character up in my arms and help her! I knew it wouldn’t have a HEA. I knew it, but it still hurts.

The Monsters We Make, Author: Kinsyn Rhee
Okay, who was really the monster in this story? Lily’s arc was magnificent and incredibly satisfying. This is a story that I would be most happy to see become a full series. I’m fascinated by the world, and invested in the plot in a way that made me wish it didn’t end. While it wraps up beautifully, I WOULD NOT complain if this was used to create more. I want to see what happens next, I want more!!! Please? Rhee? This short story managed to feel huge despite the limited number of pages. I absolutely loved it.

Silver in the Kit, Author: Selina Rossman
“That's. Not. A. Moose.” While the story is definitely thrilling and scary, that line made me laugh out loud like a crazy person. Rossman plays with the creepy method of- the less you see, the scarier. You know it’s there. You get a glimpse. It freaks you the heck out. Then it is finally revealed. My oh my. This is a good one, and there’s a heck of a spicy scene too. The ending of this story is to die for, and a wicked way to wrap up this spooky anthology.

*side note. I’ve never added something like this to a review before, but it felt applicable. I hope you enjoyed these stories as much as I did, but a few in here make me want to say this. YOU, the reader, you’re not alone. If you are struggling, help is out there for those who seek it. Somebody loves you, and life is better because you are here. If the great vastness and darkness of space can still be graced by the light of stars, so can you.

4.5 ⭐️ 2.5🌶

Ok, this indie author anthology definitely has some bite to it. These dark tales invoke all sorts of beastly creatures to terrorize and devour the reader, story by story. I thoroughly enjoyed the carnage that is this anthology. Some creatures stay with you long after the tale is told. A nice foray into the creatures of spooky season. Don't sleep on this one!

Covenant of Beasts sinks its claws in from the first page and does. not. let. go. This anthology blurs the line between monster and man, between what we fear and what we secretly crave. Every story feels like a mirror with teeth ......some reflective, some ready to bite.

We’ve got shifters, monsters, and humans who might actually be worse. There’s hunger, heartbreak, and that wild little whisper that says maybe the beast isn’t the villain after all.

Each tale claws at something raw .....identity, instinct, transformation .....and by the end, you’re not sure if you want to run from the monsters or run with them.

This anthology said, “We all have a little beast in us,” and I said, “Yeah, okay, but why is it kinda hot?” 😅🖤

An intriguing collection of creatures of the deep, newly imagined monsters, cryptids, and shapeshifters to get your blood pumping just in time for Halloween! Each short story is carefully crafted to not only entice the reader but to keep them guessing until the very end.

I loved the opening story, Navigator. it was the perfect beginning for the anthology, easing the reader onto the open seas and letting the terrors of the deep slowly slip in.

By far, my favorite short was Friend Shaped. I loved the author's take on a local cryptid as well as the surprise ending.

Paranormal Playground, Seasons of the Witch, Covenant of Beasts

~Indie Author Collective, October Anthology

Indie Author Collective is proud to present their October Anthology – three separate novels, twenty masterful authors, and thirty-one spine-chilling stories – that present paranormal unknowns, witchy hijinks, and beastly creatures. This anthology collection is a true collection of stories that will chill you to the bone, keep you under its spell, and make you question where the true beasts reside.

Authors included in the three-part anthology are: Kinsyn Rhee, Brooke Eisen, Grace Vice, Ellen Winter, Amity Grey, Aspen J. Sterling, Kestrel Martin, A. Miri, RedNight, Jennie Hedges, Kisa Rayen, Denise Ernst, Selina Rossman, Tamsin Hawthorn, Andra Sable, Zamina Solera, Gareth Ian Davies, Twyla Menezes, Isaac Lotharus, and Libby James.

These tales range from skin-crawling dread to raw, compassionate intimacy, spell-binding suspense, and haunting tension, where mystery takes a deep hold and refusing to let go. Shifting perspectives reveal ghosts with heart, witches pulsing with dark temptation, and beasts who are sometimes achingly human - forcing readers to confront their own hidden vulnerabilities to relate to stories from different perspectives.

Cinematic prose drags you into visceral worlds where love and terror collide, leaving you breathless, unsettled, and questioning the ghosts, witches, and beasts sometimes beyond our imagination.

I was honored that the Indie Author Collective allowed me to Alpha/Beta/ARC all three novels in the October Anthology: Paranormal Playground, Seasons of the Witch, and Covenant of Beasts. As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition. I have not been promised any compensation, current or future, by an of the authors, publisher, or PR group for a fair and honest review.

A must read anthology (3 parts 🫣) that includes transformation and some ‘beastliness’.
These 8 shorts hook you and don’t let you go until the last page, and not even then! I had a few ‘wtf’ moments!
They will captivate you. They will haunt you. They will leave you wanting more. I was very impressed with the writing of these authors and can’t wait to read the other 2 anthologies!
My favorite was Dance of the Deer Goddess!

"Navigator" swept me away—both literally and emotionally. From the very first chapter, I was hooked, and by the end, I was left breathless by a jaw-dropping plot twist that I never saw coming. This story is a rollercoaster of emotion, and I savored every moment of it. The vivid, immersive first-person narrative made me feel like I was right there in the icy waters of the Bering Sea, traveling alongside the crew. The haunting melody that threads through the story sung by what the crew thinks is a siren is so beautifully written, you can almost hear it echoing in the background. Seraphina, my favorite character (no surprise there) absolutely stole the spotlight. She’s a quiet force—independent, strong, feared by some, and deeply respected by everyone around her, including the captain. Her silence speaks volumes, and her actions carry the weight of lives. In a setting shaped by the constraints of its time, she stands tall among the men, proving her strength not just through words, but through unwavering precision and capability. Navigator is a gripping, emotionally rich adventure that blends mystery, adventure, and heart in a way that stays with you long after the final page. It’s beautifully written, powerfully told, and definitely unforgettable. One of my favorite stories I have had the pleasure to read.

"Pixie Dust" is a dark, emotional thrill ride told through multiple POVs—a narrative style I absolutely adore. The premise alone had me hooked: masked, muscular men drenched in fake blood? Yes, please. Sign me up! But this story is so much more than its striking descriptions. It’s layered with trauma, history, and raw emotion that pulses through every chapter. Emily’s POV offers a haunting glimpse into a painful past, making you ache for her healing and happiness. Micha’s POV, on the other hand, is steeped in mystery and mood—tinged with despair, flickers of hope, and a quiet intensity that keeps you guessing. Together, their voices build a tension that’s both emotional and suspenseful, adding depth to the story’s central mystery. From the very beginning, Pixie Dust throws readers into a whirlwind of questions, dangling answers just out of reach. It’s the kind of book that makes you pause and say, “Wait, what just happened?”—to then immediately turning the page to try and obtain the answers. The sexual tension is palpable, and I was absolutely living for it. This book doesn’t shy away from the dark, but even in its heaviest moments, you feel deeply connected to the characters and their struggles. It’s intense, shocking, and emotionally charged in the best way possible. The ending? Everything I hoped for and more. "Pixie Dust" is a heart-pounding, mind-spinning, emotional experience that will leave you blushing breathless—and wanting more.

"Dance of the Deer Goddess" is a mesmerizing journey that begins with a deeply relatable yearning—the desire for freedom, for movement, and for a life unbound by one place, for love and acceptance, a sense of belonging. From the very first pages, I was drawn into Selena’s world, captivated by her thoughts and the vivid, immersive descriptions that made every moment feel real. Centered around a powerful group of women, with Selena following in the footsteps of many, this story celebrates feminine strength, and connection. I absolutely loved that the narrative focused on women supporting and discovering themselves. The emotional authenticity in Selena’s inner voice made it easy to connect with her and feel every beat of her journey. The story is enchanting and sensual, with a magnetic pull that oozes from every word. The encounters between Selena, Tarin and the other women are written with such rich detail that it’s impossible not to feel swept away. You can hear the forest around them, smell the earth, and feel the tension in the air—it’s intoxicating. What truly hooked me was the blend of mystery and comfort. Just when you think you understand what’s happening, the story shifts, leaving you breathless and eager for more. The ending? A complete shock—in the best way possible. It was unexpected, emotional, and absolutely perfect. All I can say is: wow.

"Friend-Shaped" is a sweet, emotionally gentle story that quietly stole my heart. It follows Tucker, a hardworking rancher whose life is steady but solitary—until a mysterious wolf woman begins stirring up trouble in town, stealing livestock and sparking curiosity. Her arrival brings a spark of excitement to Tucker’s otherwise quiet world, and from that moment on, everything begins to shift. The dynamic between Tucker and Luna is absolutely adorable. Their interactions are tender, playful, and full of charm, and I loved watching Tucker’s mood and outlook evolve as their bond deepened. The story is lighthearted, but it doesn’t shy away from moments of tension and suspense. There were times I found myself holding my breath, nervous to turn the page—but needing to know what happened next. What makes this story so special is its balance of comfort and emotionally stirring. It’s a story that warms you from the inside out, with just enough mystery and heart-pounding moments to keep you fully engaged. By the end, I was smiling, completely enthralled by this gentle, magical tale.

"The Savage Within" is a chilling, spine-tingling tale that grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go. Ellis’ backstory is unsettling from the start—you can immediately sense that his upbringing was anything but ordinary. The immersive detail throughout the narrative makes your skin crawl and your heart race. It’s the kind of story that builds anxiety with every turn of the page, and yet you find yourself almost compelled to keep reading. The horror elements are masterfully done. The atmosphere is thick with dread, and the repetition woven into the story adds a haunting rhythm that amplifies the unease. Flashbacks offer a deeper, more disturbing look into Ellis’ past, revealing layers of trauma and intensity that make his actions more understandable. It quite honestly left me speechless. Goosebumps covered my skin the entire time. The spook factor is absolutely on point—dark, eerie, and at times downright terrifying. The title The Savage Within takes on deeper meaning as the story unfolds, and by the end, it resonates in a way that’s both unexpected and disturbing. This story is intense, creepy, and completely captivating. It’s a psychological and emotional rollercoaster that had my jaw hanging open more than once. If you’re looking for a haunting read that lingers long after the final page, this one delivers.

"Goodnight" is both devastating and beautiful—a story that broke my heart and made me fall in love with its characters all at once. I have a love-hate relationship with this book, and that’s a testament to how powerfully it’s written. The narrative unfolds through multiple POVs, offering a stark contrast between the characters’ personalities, struggles, and perspectives. Yet, despite their differences, the story beautifully explores how love, compassion, and understanding can still flourish. Lorelei's journey is especially gut-wrenching. You want to wrap her in a hug and protect her from the world. Her pain is palpable, and it lingers with you long after the page is turned. Tristan, too, evokes a deep emotional response—you just want to tell her that she is enough and she is doing her best. Their dynamic is complex, protective and deeply human. The beginning may feel a bit disorienting, but as the story unfolds, everything clicks into place—and the emotional weight only grows heavier. It’s the kind of book that makes your chest ache, that pulls emotions to the surface you didn’t expect to feel. The writing is stunning, layered with depth and vulnerability that makes every moment hit harder. Even knowing from the trigger warnings that this story wouldn’t end well, I couldn't help but hope. And when the ending came, it shattered me. Still, every character carved out a space in my heart. It is a deeply emotional, eye-opening experience that left me reeling—but also grateful to have read it.

"The Monsters We Make" is a hauntingly beautiful story that poses a powerful question: is Lily truly the monster, or are the humans around her the real monsters? As the layers of her past unravel, the emotional depth of this story hits hard, pulling you into a whirlwind of heartbreak, resilience, and hope. Lily’s journey is one of quiet strength and unwavering selflessness. Despite enduring years of torment and tragedy, she remains whole—not a hollow shell of who she once was, but a woman rediscovering her true self and power. Her story is one that radiates hope, and I found myself rooting for her with every page, desperate for her to find peace and freedom from the pain that’s followed her for so long. The middle of the book delivers a gasp-worthy moment—a spark of joy and possibility that lights up the narrative. The writing is rich with emotion and layered with backstory that gives every character depth and meaning. Hearing the tales from the so-called “monsters” adds a profound sense of empathy and understanding, and watching Lily reclaim her strength is nothing short of inspiring. This story is a masterpiece. It’s deeply emotional, beautifully written, and ends in a way that’s both heartbreaking and satisfying. I would absolutely love to see this expanded into a full series—there’s so much more to explore in this world. This story left a mark on my heart, and I wish I could step into its pages and live in its fantasy. I absolutely adored this story.

"Silver in the Kit" is a gripping, atmospheric tale that follows two female paramedics, Sam and Tiffany, as they navigate getting stuck on the side of the mountains of Maine—and the emotional terrain of their own relationship. From the very first page, the tension is palpable. You can feel the fear, the mystery, and the weight of the wilderness pressing in through the vivid, immersive writing. The descriptions are so rich, you can see the scenes play out in your mind. The story balances emotional depth with moments of genuine terror. Some scenes are heartwarming and deeply personal, while others are chilling. The dynamic between Sam and Tiffany is beautifully complex—caught between friendship and something more. You find yourself rooting for them, hoping they’ll find clarity and happiness amidst the chaos. Midway through the story, there’s a surge of joy and relief that feels like a breath of fresh air. The passion between the characters is intense and rewarding, especially after the emotional strain earlier in the narrative. But just as quickly, the tone shifts—lust turns to fear, and the horrors lurking in the woods come alive. The fear is real, valid, and deeply unsettling, especially for anyone who’s ever felt uneasy in the dark wilderness. The ending? A complete shock. It’s a twist that flips everything on its head and leaves you stunned.

Covenant of Beasts was my first read of the Indie Author Collective October Anthology Trilogy. this trilogy has a widely eclectic mix of horror and dark themes, with tropes and genres for everyone who's into October vibes.

this anthology was a pretty great read even though there were a few that weren't to my taste which can happen with anthologies. it's exciting and diverse and touches on some classic horror beasts.

as i read the ARC copy, there were unfortunately a few triggers that should have been listed in some stories that weren't appropriately listed but hopefully this isn't the case in the final version

the stories i truly adored;
>Dance of the Deer Godess,
>Goodnight
>The Monsters We Make
>Silver In The Kit

i received an advance review copy for free, and i am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was gifted one of the stories to read by Kinsyn Rhee and her story was amazing! We're looking at a heroine that is kind of broken down and has been for a while but hasn't lost faith and the strength yet, which is admirable! I love how the story progressed and showed the way. We met new characters which I hope we will hear about more as they are very interesting!

I would say for this being her kind of "first" published story it was an amazing introduction! Definitely can't wait to read more!

Thank you

I thought the different stories in this anthology were pretty imaginative, strikingly horrific, and some of them definitely made me want more. I guess that is the reason it didn't get five stars. Even though these are meant to be short stories, even so, some of them felt incomplete. But I loved what was there. There are a couple that will make you questions reality right along with the narrator, so don't read in the dark or alone if you are prone to the chills or a wandering mind.

All of the stories in this anthology tend toward deals with demons or supernatural creatures, human interaction with the unseelie or ancient beings, or just plain human madness. That last one is of a particular interest of mine, so my favorite of the bunch would either be The Savage Within, which has to do with the curse of a cult, or Goodnight, which touched on multiple personality/dissociative identity disorder.
