Prior to this book, I had no idea who Hazel Scott was. So thank you ReShonda Tate for telling her story (blending fact/fiction). I learned a lot and was entertained at the same time. The writing put me through so many emotions; especially with Adam. Now I need to go down the Hazel Scott rabbit hole and listen to her music and find some pictures.
Lynette R. Freeman did a phenomenal job narrating this story. She truly helped bring it to life!

Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for the advanced digital copy! Thank you to Libro.fm and William Morrow for access to the audiobook!

What a remarkable story! I picked this up not realizing it was based on a real person! Hazel Scott was a contemporary with James Baldwin, Lena Horne, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and Quincy Jones to name a few. I had never heard of her before! She was incredibly multi-talented and a huge activist for Civil Rights.

This was an incredible fictionalized story of a woman who had all but disappeared from public life but when she was in her prime, she was everywhere! We learn about her rise to fame and her relationships along the way both with her close friends and her husband, Adam Clayton Powell Jr who was a preacher and US Congressman.

Read if you like:

As I write this, I'm listening to "I Wish I Didn't Love You So" by Hazel Scott… that alone shows how enamored I am with this story.

With Love, From Harlem by ReShonda Tate beautifully captures the historical essence of Harlem and its entertainment scene.

The novel opens with a vibrant portrayal of 1940s Harlem, immersing readers in the sights and sounds of the era's iconic jazz clubs. Tate's meticulous research shines through in her vivid descriptions of the music scene and the atmosphere that made Hazel Scott a celebrated figure.
One of the most compelling aspects is its exploration of Hazel's career as a Black woman in entertainment. Tate doesn't shy away from depicting the challenges Hazel faced—her courageous stands against injustice and her refusal to compromise her principles. Her activism and artistry are beautifully intertwined throughout.

What I loved most was how Tate brought Hazel's personal relationships to life with such depth and nuance. I found myself deeply moved by the complexities she navigated as she balanced her career, identity, and personal commitments. The way Tate captures the tension between Hazel's fierce independence and the weight of expectations placed upon her resonated with me profoundly.
Overall, I give this story 5 stars. Tate's masterful storytelling captivated me from the first page, and the audiobook performance brought Hazel Scott's world vividly to life. This is historical fiction at its finest—a beautiful, necessary tribute to an extraordinary woman and the era she defined.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an advance audiobook copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Beautifully written Historical fiction. I admit before reading this I was not aware of who Hazel Scott was even though I was aware of her ex-husband Adam Clayton Powell Jr, because his legacy is muddled with many affairs his spouses to me were not interesting to me. As the author notes Hazel's legacy has been erased in modern day history. This book pushed me to research Hazel's to get to know this woman outside of the relationship curated and created in this novel.
-Hazel was an icon in her own right before connecting with ACP Jr.
-The lesson on this relationship and marriage is you lose them how you get them.
-Women have always had a struggle of 'having it all' this was highlighted in the writing.
-In public/celebrity marriages the battle of who is more popular and important can be the catalyst for the demise in the relationship. More specifically the known fragility of the male ego. Hazel started to lose herself trying to let her husband shine brighter than her because this caused friction with them.
She stated you knew who I was when you met me and this resonated because too many times, we try to change people to fit our expectations and desires.
Beautifully written, thought provoking and reintroduction of Ms. Hazel Scott

4.75✨ I’m almost ashamed to admit that before reading With Love from Harlem, I had never heard of Hazel Scott. I knew of Billie Holiday, James Baldwin, and so many others from this era, but the incredible Ms. Scott? Somehow, no. And what a trailblazer she was: a Black woman of extraordinary talent, intelligence, and elegance.

This historical fiction novel is set during the Harlem Renaissance and traces Hazel Scott’s remarkable life, from her early days as a jazz pianist in the New York City nightclub scene, to becoming the wife of a U.S. congressman (that man made me furious), then on to Paris and eventually back to America. It’s a story rich with music and melody, pain and joy, loss and renewal. Along the way, there are familiar names and a few surprising ones too. I’ll leave those discoveries to you.

The narration was excellent as well. I did knock off a few points because there were moments where the story dragged just a bit, but overall, it didn’t take away from the experience.

I truly enjoyed this book, and I’ve spent the evening listening to Hazel Scott’s music. She’s officially in my regular rotation. Enjoy!

With Love, From Harlem is a beautifully told story inspired by the life of Hazel Scott, blending real history with just enough fiction to bring her world vividly to life. The author did a powerful job highlighting Hazel’s brilliance, resilience, and impact while weaving in an emotional, engaging narrative. This felt less like a typical romance and more like a tribute—one that honored Black excellence, artistry, and love during a pivotal time in history. Harlem wasn’t just the backdrop; it was the heartbeat of the story.

The audiobook experience was equally incredible—the narration added depth, emotion, and atmosphere that truly elevated the story, making Hazel’s journey feel even more intimate and powerful.

✨ Read this if you love:
• Historical fiction rooted in real Black history
• Stories celebrating Black women’s brilliance
• Romance woven into culture, music, and legacy
• Audiobooks that fully immerse you

With Love From Harlem is one of those stories that stays with you long after you close the book. I love how ReShonda Tate brings Hazel Scott to life in a way that is simply unforgettable. Through this beautifully written historical fiction, my thoughts would not stop turning, and of course I went down a rabbit hole of learning so much about Hazel Scott. I found myself wondering how many other powerful stories remain untold, unheard, and unseen.

What I appreciate most is when authors take history and breathe life into them. SIDE-NOTE: I was most excited when I read Nina Simone's name and learned of hazel Scott's and Nina's simone’s friendship. I love me some Nina!

This book is moving and thought-provoking. If you love stories that honor legacy and transport you into another time, this one is for you. I absolutely recommend With Love From Harlem.

Thank you so much Harper Audio for the advanced audio of this book!

Okayyyy, let’s talk about it.

With Love from Harlem by Reshonda Tate? Whew. 5+ stars, easy.

This book just felt good. Harlem wasn’t just the backdrop — it had its own personality. The culture, the pride, the history… you could feel it in every scene. It gave community, legacy, and a little drama in the best way.

And the characters? Messy, layered, real. I laughed, I got irritated, I softened up — all of it. Reshonda knows how to write people who feel like somebody you actually know.

I also loved how it blended love, growth, and real-life struggles without being heavy. It was heartfelt but still easy to read. Just good storytelling.

If you like romance with depth, strong Black voices, and stories about love and legacy, go ahead and add this to your list.

Highly recommend. Go read it!

Hazel Dorothy Scott, jazz pianist, actress, activist

Before reading this book, I knew the name Hazel Scott but knew nothing about who she was or what she was known for. This book took me on a journey to learn about this unsung hero who used her platform to fight for civil rights. I was engrossed in learning about the woman who stood on her principals and fought for what was right. This book was a good reminder that when it comes to public figures their private lives are not always as spectacular as what they portray in public.

Lynnette R. Freeman’s narration took me back in time. I visualized every moment and felt every emotion.

I received this ARC from Willam Morrow Brooks publishing and oh was it a treat! This historical fiction romance is about the amazing jazz performer Hazel Scott, her rise to stardom, while centering around the love story of her and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. a congressman from Harlem, NY. Heavy is the head that wears the crown… I loved the glimpse into Harlem and the legends who came from such a rich culture. With the ups and downs of the spotlight, will the love be enough? Will their union change the course of their live for the good or bad?

With Love from Harlem tells the story of Hazel Scott — legendary musician, activist, and film star of 20th-century Harlem — whose brilliance and courage deserved far more recognition. Surrounded by icons like Billie Holiday, Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, and even Quincy Jones, Hazel’s story shines in its own powerful way. I loved learning about the struggles Black women faced during that era and was deeply moved by how fiercely she fought to remain true to herself. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

With the precise syncopation of runs, chords, and phrasing, Tate unfolds the world of piano prodigy Hazel Scott’s explosive fame during her years with Adam (Clayton Powell). The fleshy storytelling mirrors the trials of their high-powered relationships set against a backdrop of Harlem’s twentieth-century finery and elegance. Imagine, couched in the battle for Negro civil rights, Scott’s voice ringing out amongst the era’s strongest. An excellent read. (Kindle ARC from NetGalley)

This was such an interesting story. I never have paid attention to the Jazz scene or the older music that Billie Holiday played. I loved the history and the music as well as the actual life that this book showed. It was interesting while also sharing history. I plan to listen to the music of the different musicians that were in this book.

Thank you Harper Audio for the alc.

I truly enjoyed this story. The depth of the story and the way it humanized Hazel Scott by placing some of the focus on the life she lived outside of the stage and camera. Before reading this novel, I had a very basic idea of Hazel Scott as a Trinidadian born pianist that achieved great success in the United States. The author relayed this story in a way that allows the reader to feel like she got to know the protagonist in a really personal way. As brilliant as Hazel was on the piano, she was in many ways, just a girl wanting romantic love in a meaningful way and fair treatment for black people. She stood up for herself and others, using her platform to the best of her ability while understanding her responsibility to engage in good representation for all black women. I was also surprised about her relationship with Billie Holiday.
